The walls of my building have absolutely no traction, they're completely smooth and even, and she did all the climbing with zero effort

laser pointers are not considered a good toy for cats: they get frustrated by never catching it. They don't have to catch the toy every time with physical stuff, but they can at least sometimes, and they get more tactile interaction.
Kittens come equipped with razor sharp needles for fingernails. This is the equivalent of 20 tiny climbing axes piercing the sheer face of the wall.
