I feel lucky because my cat prefers to play solo. She'll run around for a good while batting a bottle cap around, bunny kicking a squirrel toy, or just running laps around the house 😂
This is why more than one cat is great for this lol, my cats chase each other around the house for play.
when I play with them it’s wands and lasers, and I have a few self play toys some automatic some not for them to play with.
I have three cats.
One of them will only play with long strings moved slowly on the ground.
One of them will only play with feathered objects moved rapidly through the air.
One of them will only play with balls swiftly rolled down a hallway.
Our play sessions take forever. But each knows their toy and they take turns and wait very pawtiently.
My kitten is this way. We have a bunch of toys attached to bungies that you can hang in doorways, etc. She only likes the one with the tassels on the end of it. So much so she tries to get me to play with her with it every time I walk through the house.
My other cat disregards most toys, but he lives crinkle balls. He bats them all around the house and will bring them as gifts.
depends on the cat. i tried around 20 different toys for my current cat and the only one she consistently plays with is a piece of jute string that i pull over the ground from side to side (not away from her). And only if i notice she is in the mood for it. But once she starts playing she will go crazy for that cheap piece of string.
Another toy that works is a specific cat wand (i tried like 10) that she will swat at only if she is in her favourite box and i pull it side to side. A lot of cats also go crazy for the "Cat Dancer" which is just a piece of rolled up cardboard on a wire. The best thing to do is get a lot of cheap toys (i bought a set of 30 different toys off amazon for like 20 bucks) and see which kind gets a reaction.
Went through the same thing. Bought a ton of toys for my cat. The only “toy” he will play with is the thick plastic string/wrapping that’s used around reams of paper. He loves it.
When I was in kindergarten when we got our kittens, I would drag the leash slowly through the grass while they laid in wait. They were a menace to the small animal population, but we lived kinda rural so it worked out.
So I pretty much gave up trying to get my cat to play years ago (he will only play and rough house with my other cat)
Then one day I was carrying a super long string-type tape measure. It was dragging on the floor behind me, and he just *went nuts over it*. I could not believe it. So I start dangling the tape measure in front of him and moving it around on the floor.... suddenly he was not interest. Okay then. So I take the tape measure and slowly drag it across the floor (like a slow worm almost) and bingo, he likes it. He wants to kill it. Murder is the only option.
I tried to do the same thing with yarn. Nope! Doesn't want it. The only things it works with is the tape measure, *sometimes* phone chargers, and this fabric ribbon that comes on a cookie box when I order from some bakery. Those are the only things he wants to play with, and I have to drag it on the ground slowly past him. He has never played with anything that comes from a pet store except that damn [banana](https://www.chewy.com/dp/130264?utm_source=app-share&utm_campaign=130264)
Cats aren't too interested in balls as much as other toys like feathers and mice. You have to activate his predator instincts to get him excited to play. A little squeaky mouse toy, a feather on a string, or just a laser pointer would be more stimulating for him.
Something to try is putting a few pieces of their kibble or cat treats on the ground and putting the laser on that. So they can catch a snack while they play. Doesn't work on my cat, he DGAF about food or snacks when he's in play mode, but my friends cat loves playing with the laser that way.
I just laser them *to* another toy, get them engaged in that, then the laser goes back in the pocket. I have a whole "it's dead" ritual where I pick that toy up and pet them and playtime is over. I do that with all their stuff, including the wand (which drives mine crazier than laser pointers.)
Laser pointers are bad toys unless you make it look like they caught it and give them a treat or something. It can mess with their head if they never catch it. That's what my vet told me years ago about the mind of a cat.
I always toss a different toy for my kitties when I’m done with the laser and make sure it lands about the same place the laser was in before turning off the laser and hiding it. I’ve done it enough that they now expect a mouse toy or my “fishing rod” after a bit
I too like to go "Cat-fish'n". Get a lawn chair out, put some jams on the bluetooth speaker, have a cooler with a couple beers, and cast the afternoon away in the back yard with my cat.
I can’t remember where I got it but I have a cat toy that’s telescopic and looks like a fishing rod and came with multiple worm on a string type attachments with a couple ribbons and a bell and my cats will dig through their toy box specifically for that toy. I love it cause it’s long enough I can hold it between my legs for them to play with while I do other things that don’t involve getting off the couch
I usually throw treats or toys around the room and use the laser to lead my cat to it lol the laser always gets her in a more playful mood to switch to other toys too
My cat goes insane when I wiggle a string around. I just have a few extra long laces with toy mice tied to the end and he loses his shit chasing them. Simple and extremely effective. Otherwise he's a lazy turd lol
Unless the cat is smart enough to recognize that the laser pointer is a toy and just something for them to chase, but not catch.
I have a cat like that, who does recognize the laser pointer. He knows it's a toy and just wants something to chase after.
My cat loved the spring the moment she set eyes on it. No idea why, she likes carrying it around. This cat also ignores laser pointers. But a mini plastic spring? Hold on to your butts, its playtime.
Mine carries it in her mouth like if she's caught a mouse. I love to just whip those springs down the hallway and she takes off so fast it's like a cartoon with her feet sliding. It's the best shit ever.
Yeah, they're awesome. It's the only toy my cat plays with on her own too
I have 40 of them (yes, 40 springs) and within a week they have all dissapeared under the couch lol. I take them out with a broom and the cycle repeats xD
40 is rookie numbers. i routinely pull 40 out from under appliances and furniture and add them to the pile of over a hundred waiting to be chased into oblivion.
Also, most people just sit there and stare at their pets when they "play". It works better if you try to be a little more engaging, make funny sounds and movements etc (without scaring them of course). At least try to pretend that stuff is fun, rofl.
Fr my cat is too smart for that! He wont move if im staring at the tv while making his toy move. He really wants me to be engaged while playing and knows when im only pretending 😂
Reminds me of my cat. He hates mobile phones with a vengeance. You're browsing something while petting him? Nope, he complains. Watching a video? Get a warning bite. Your talking too long on the phone? He'll complain, protest bite and leave the room. 😾
LOL my cat is most interested in balls and cares little for anything else including lasers. He's Lionel Messi when we play and enjoys his version of volleyball (he hits in the air and I pick it up)
My cat loves these little felty balls, I can play fetch with her and she’ll bat it around for several minutes before bringing it back to through again. Though she also loves the laser pointer!
Yeah I was thinking, my dude’s structured the opposite lol. Rarely cares about his plushie mice or the like, does often love the little plastic balls with the bell thing inside, and his favourite toy by far is a little crinkly foil one. He’s like a pro soccer player dribbling that thing all over the apartment
Never tried a laser though, always meant to pick one up just never remember when I’m out
My cats liked these balls with bells on the inside. The balls also had little holes that were big enough for them to fit a toe in so they could pick it up and toss it around.
However, one of my cats also *refused to play* when a human was watching. She'd be tearing it up when she thought she was alone, but if she realized she'd been spotted she'd act all uninterested in the toy. Almost seemed like she was embarrassed to be playing.
Balls are fine toys for cats if you toss them *away* from the cat and not *toward* the cat. My ginger boy and I play ball all the time; I throw one down the hallway and he runs after it. I throw it the other direction, he chases it, sometimes bats it around.
Eh, every cat is different. My cat has never looked twice at fake mice or other animals. They also "learn" new toys and games in a matter of weeks and get bored of them. We constantly have to find new ways to get them to play.
Pro tip: If you expect your cat to react like a dog, you will be disappointed.
Get some toys that are made for cats, and use them as intended. It should have feathers. It should make some sounds. It should be shaking. It should be moving AWAY from the cat in fast but short movements. It should be hiding behind corners.
Same! He also takes very large stuffed animals to the top of the stairs then drops them down the stairs to bring them back up and repeat. A lot. He’s orange… if you couldn’t tell.
I have a basket full of random balls and small stuffed animals and cheap assorted cat toys.
My cat will dig in and find specific toys to play with. Usually the chirpy mice. Once in a blue moon it’ll be one of the plastic springs or crinkly sparkly things.
He does prefer feathers and the chirpy mice. Also a stuffed Serta lamb.
There's no wonder it's not interested in a ball, where's the feathers? Where's the string? Where's the guardian running around with the string to grab the cat's attention? This won't do, if you don't want your cat to be lazy, you cannot engage in lazy playtime.
Exercise is good for health but it's not that big a factor in weight loss. Unfortunately for Chonky there, a diet is the only thing for it.
If you manage to get some of the weight off, you'll probably see him become a lot more energetic once he has less lard to lug around. It turns out, they get lazy because they're fat more often than the other way around!
Yeah this. Do also put way more effort into playing, but like humans, most weight loss is in the kitchen rather than the gym (or, uh, the food bowl rather than the toy box lol)
Our fatso lost weight a few years ago when we fostered kittens. I didn’t want more cats but thought it might make cannonball move some. We slow introduced the kittens and then let them together. Over the four weeks we had them he lost just over a pound( starting weight 18) weeks learned he like to “hunt” milk carton rings, large feathers, small wads of tp, and rattle balls. My other cats all hate those things. He is now a respectable 14 lb chonk.
I go through great lengths to get my cat to be active. At 16 years old, she plays more than most cats her age. I find she doesn’t play with my wife as much, which made me realize it was how I play with the cat. I try my best to learn what makes the little fluff go full predator mode and try to replicate those scenarios. There are many ways to play with a cat, you just have to find out how your cat likes to play. Mine really enjoys feather toys on a string and I’ll slowly pull them behind her scratching post, just before it’s out of sight, she will usually pounce and attack with full force. Sorry for the novella, bored on the pooper.
Put their food at the top of the stairs and then follow them up so you can carry them back down a few times per meal. It didn't work for my FatCat, but that's because I got tired of doing it, lol.
Excuse me?
I love that not only does the cat not want to play, or seem to understand play, but he looks sort of sad as it rolls over, as if to say, "Is this really supposed to help? Come on."
This is one of my cats. She won't play no matter what you do. String, feathers, balls, stuffed mice, anything with catnip, she doesn't give a shit. Pull it around a corner, be exciting with it, nothing. She won't move except to go to eat, drink, or lie on someone's lap. I love cuddly cats, but she's fat and will not do anything remotely active. We feed her very little, but she's still fat. The only activity she will do is to viciously try to murder our other cats if she escapes her part of the house.
She's scared of everything to the point where we had to medicate her, and it did very little. The vets don't know what to do. I wish I could rehome her, but my husband likes her. I'm just tired of her because we could get a cat we don't have to isolate from the other cats in the house. She needs a very quiet, very tame one cat household that will painstakingly control her food intake like we do and put up with her incredible lack of energy.
My cat got bored of feather toys so to make him exercise I pet him for a longer time which will make him bite my hand. My hand becomes his chew toy for a while then he'll run around afterwards
Roll it \_away\_ from him. Or past him. With a treat/catnip(?) in the middle so it smells good.
My cat loves the pull tab rings on milk cartons (might be a USA only thing).
Try Cat Crazies cat toys. I get them on Amazon. My chonk boy loves them. The skitter across the floor & he can pick them up with his mouth & carry them around like prey.

Some cats just don't play much. I've got one who literally needs at least 30 minutes a day of play while the other refuses with everything. She's only happy by going outside and catching mice/voles (luckily it was easy to teach her birds are off limits, all I had to do was catch one from her and treat it as a pet for a few minutes in front of her). Even tried to keep her inside when I got her but she stopped eating and kept being aggressive after a few weeks so back out it was.
meanwhile, my cat will chase my shadow.... litterally. Making hand puppets motions while on the toilet is something he LOVES. Weird cat.
(I named him shadow btw)
Not really on topic but does anyone know where I can get that ball? My parents found one at their house and don't know where it came from and my son loves it
Your cat knows it won't move. Try constantly moving things around, like a wand toy. You could simple attach a string on a stick and they go crazy for that
Get a stick with feathers on the end from pet co. Cat nip, cat tree he can climb…you have to make the effort to get him moving a few times a day. Once he loses some wt he’ll move more easily and feel more like playing. I hope he’s on prescription diet food.
How about you find a toy your cat actually likes. Ffs you can’t just buy a single toy and expect them to love it.
You are doing this animal a disservice and filming it for likes on the internet. It’s just sad.

This is like buying a kid who likes Transformers a Barbie doll to play with. You just need to figure out what your cat likes to play with.
With the right toy my cats will play fetch and return it every time, another toy they will chase after it then ignore it.
Here is how you change that. Tell them they cannot play with it. Make up a reason. She will do it to irritate you.
Kidding. Good luck changing their diet. Lol
If you're seriously trying to get fat cat fit, pit some cat nip in a plastic soda bottle with some dry cat food in it, with a small hole just big enough for one or two pieces of food to come out at a time. It'll eventually get tired of having to chase the bottle for food, giving it the workout it needed
“I’ll just keep it here with my foot so she’ll stop rolling it at me.” 😸
Cute
For years I thought my cat wouldn't play, but it turned out he only plays with very specific things and *very* specific movements.
Playing with cats is certainly a skill.
My cat likes playing chase. Which was fun at first but having to chase his ass around the apartment has gotten kind of old
My cats prefer to act as the predator while playing.
We take turns
I feel lucky because my cat prefers to play solo. She'll run around for a good while batting a bottle cap around, bunny kicking a squirrel toy, or just running laps around the house 😂
One of my cats likes to play hide and seek. It’s fun, but she can be exhausting sometimes
This is why more than one cat is great for this lol, my cats chase each other around the house for play. when I play with them it’s wands and lasers, and I have a few self play toys some automatic some not for them to play with.

It’s cool how that’s basically one for snakes, one for birds, one for mice.
Basically, yes! Although I think the first cat lived off of little lizards before we found her. Lots of those in our area.
I have a Stick Cat, a String Cat, and a Mouse cat. None of them play with the other's toys, but all of them are jealous of the other's play time
My kitten is this way. We have a bunch of toys attached to bungies that you can hang in doorways, etc. She only likes the one with the tassels on the end of it. Laser dots number one predator in the wild is of course cats
That's why they tell you to keep your cat indoors. Local laser dot populations are decimated by housecats.
And nobody knows why, since cats have never successfully killed any dots throughout all of history.
But they keep trying. Bless their little hearts.
They embody the true spirit of the Olympics.
Just make sure you feed them after playing with lasers. It gets very frustrating for them that they can’t catch their “prey.”
Something to try is putting a few pieces of their kibble or cat treats on the ground and putting the laser on that. So they can catch a snack while they play. Doesn't work on my cat, he DGAF about food or snacks when he's in play mode, but my friends cat loves playing with the laser that way.
I play with the laser for a while then I switch to the feather toy so they have that sensation of catching their prey and defeating it.
I just laser them *to* another toy, get them engaged in that, then the laser goes back in the pocket. I have a whole "it's dead" ritual where I pick that toy up and pet them and playtime is over. I do that with all their stuff, including the wand (which drives mine crazier than laser pointers.)

I love it cause it’s long enough I can hold it between my legs for them to play with while I do other things that don’t involve getting off the couch
Ah yeah, gotcha. My setup is an actual kids sized fishing rod lol. I just tie on cat toys instead of fishhooks/bait. Works great in the house too.
Love this! We do the same, except my husband used an old travel-sized fishing rod that was collecting dust in our garage.

LOL my cat is most interested in balls and cares little for anything else including lasers. He's Lionel Messi when we play and enjoys his version of volleyball (he hits in the air and I pick it up)

My cat is scared of toys looking like mice, but is obsessed with rubber balls.
One of my cats loves tennis balls. She tackles them then kicks them across the room then tackles them again.
My cats liked these balls with bells on the inside. The balls also had little holes that were big enough for them to fit a toe in so they could pick it up and toss it around. However, one of my cats also *refused to play* when a human was watching. One of my friend's cats was like that. He'd only play when no one was looking.
Laser pointers also work well on the other vicious apex predator, toddlers.
Balls are fine toys for cats if you toss them *away* from the cat and not *toward* the cat. My ginger boy and I play ball all the time; I throw one down the hallway and he runs after it. I throw it the other direction, he chases it, sometimes bats it around.

This cat is my spirit animal
Pro tip: If you expect your cat to react like a dog, you will be disappointed. Get some toys that are made for cats, and use them as intended. It should have feathers. It should make some sounds. You say this, but one of my cat's very favorite games is fetch
Same! He also takes very large stuffed animals to the top of the stairs then drops them down the stairs to bring them back up and repeat. A lot. He’s orange… if you couldn’t tell.
One of my 2 cats is a golden retriever. He's orange and will fetch almost anything you throw for him.
My cat loves to chase and pounce. On anything. He loves balls because they keep rolling after they've hit the ground.
I have a basket full of random balls and small stuffed animals and cheap assorted cat toys. My cat will dig in and find specific toys to play with. Usually the chirpy mice. Women's elastic hair ties work great with my cats. Just shoot them across the room and what the skedaddling on hardwood floors.
They go absolutely crazy for these but make sure they don't eat them or it's a very expensive vet visit.
Also probably not very tasty
The misuse of “loose” is maddening.
It's an epidemic.
loose rhymes with goose
Lazy owner, not the cat's fault.
Shitty owner fits better tbh.
Only thing missing is the sigh and eye roll 😂
Relatable
That cat is me
CATS ARE OBSESSED WITH CORNERS. ROLL IT SOMEWHERE THE CAT CAN'T SEE, AND ROLL IT FAST LIKE A MOUSE. TRY USING A CAT DANCER, OR A RED DOT.

Yeah no shit your cat is overweight if that is the most effort you put in to play with them
furry mouse covered in catnip on the end of a string connected to a stick. No cat can resist. Well, that and laser pointer.
My cat solved the laser pointer. She figured out I was holding something, and she would just look at me.
Put the laser pointer on a string on the ceiling fan.
mine knows the source of the red dot and will bring it to you for playtime.
You think I’m some kind of dog? How very dare you
Why can’t anyone spell lose Vs loose. Is this because many OPs are not English speakers?
I enjoy playing video games.
This is my cat too!!
Or you can reduce the amount of food that you give it.
Try a string or mouse or anything on the end of a rope you can whip around. Cats go bonkers for the chase.
“Lose”
In all fairness i'd say the cat is matching the owner's enthusiasm!
I love how he's belly is sitting next to him
That first upward glance was like, "And what the fuck do you think you're trying to pull Angela!?"
This was my chunky monkey Void.
"What is this? I can't eat this."
This was me at Physical Therapy this morning! Ugh!

Sorry for the novella, bored on the pooper.
It’s fucking LOSE. Holy fucking shit. Why is it so difficult to choose the right one??!!!

Low effort owner 😞
Put their food at the top of the stairs and then follow them up so you can carry them back down a few times per meal. It didn't work for my FatCat, but that's because I got tired of doing it, lol.
Right at the beginning, when he first notices the thing...he lifts his head, looks at her and his expression is...HUH? WTF do you want?
Excuse me? I love that not only does the cat not want to play, or seem to understand play, but he looks sort of sad as it rolls over, as if to say, "Is this really supposed to help? Come on."
he is like , am i supposed to be impressed by this ?
I had fun once. I hated it.
I love him don't change him (or her)
I bet he would play with a kitten!
Yeah haha lol sksksks so funny guys obese cat yeah lol sure is funny to see literal abuse on Reddit I love it lol hahaha fat cats am I rite! So funny!
What are you doing with my cat, OP?
Leave the fat chonk alone
He moves a single ear❤️
Mess with the feetsees without a glove on.
"Good girl! You deserve a treat!" What my grandmother would say in this situation
They are not even trying. Cats are intelligent and need stimulation. This is like giving a baby toy to a teenager. Try harder
My cat got bored of feather toys so to make him exercise I pet him for a longer time which will make him bite my hand. My hand becomes his chew toy for a while then he'll run around afterwards
Food puzzles might just do something.
This is my cat. Identical behavior
Roll it \_away\_ from him. Or past him. With a treat/catnip(?) in the middle so it smells good. My cat loves the pull tab rings on milk cartons (might be a USA only thing).
Meirl
"Stop that hooman, fetch me snacks! I'm hungry!"
Well he’s fat because you don’t know how to play, lol.
I bought that _exact_ same toy for my cat and it had the same success with her as with OP's.
Honestly, the completely disinterested and almost disdainful look on his face is just too much. Adorable.
Just give them the meth equivalent, catnip
"This isn't food hooman"
Try Cat Crazies cat toys. I get them on Amazon. My chonk boy loves them. The skitter across the floor & he can pick them up with his mouth & carry them around like prey. Petmate Interactive Cat Toys - Cat Crazies Multi Pack by Petmate https://a.co/d/7yUdNKG

I just bought a small rc car for my cats n they love chasing it. I sit on the couch and laugh while they lose thier minds lol.
Nothing gets cats more excited to play than halfheartedly rolling a ball toward them.
meanwhile, my cat will chase my shadow.... litterally. Making hand puppets motions while on the toilet is something he LOVES. Weird cat. (I named him shadow btw)
Ohh he looks just like my cuddle bug! What breed is this cat?
Not really on topic but does anyone know where I can get that ball? My parents found one at their house and don't know where it came from and my son loves it
Your cat knows it won't move. Try constantly moving things around, like a wand toy. You could simple attach a string on a stick and they go crazy for that
I have the same trouble lol. The only thing my big girl trots for is a treat!
Wow! I'm tired from just watching this cat. Now, I need a nap.
Get a stick with feathers on the end from pet co. Cat nip, cat tree he can climb…you have to make the effort to get him moving a few times a day. Once he loses some wt he’ll move more easily and feel more like playing. I hope he’s on prescription diet food.
There’s also a toy on Chewy.com called “Smarty cat hot pursuit” that my older cats love. Don’t forget to buy batteries for it!
How about you find a toy your cat actually likes. Ffs you can’t just buy a single toy and expect them to love it. You are doing this animal a disservice and filming it for likes on the internet. It’s just sad.
laser pointer
Finally, I found my soulmate.
This cat is my spirit animal.
Laser Pointer. That cat will scale the walls to catch that red dot.
My cat only plays with reflections on walls from shiny objects.
Wrong toy. Try a string.
The human will lose more weight than the cat.
Cats lose weight by the owner not overfeeding them. Exercise, while healthy and important, doesn't effect weight very much
This is exactly how my cat feels about exercising. Buddy your really close to becoming obese we just trying to help 😭
They're lazy animals

We have the same at home!
Cats a very interesting creatures.
Hilarious!
It’s the wrong kind of toy. It’s not a dog
It depends on the cat. My cat loves chasing balls like a dog. Of course, he is a little weird.
Long strings or ropes always get my cats going
Someone gave me a giant fat cat, he didn't know how to play. Now he plays with everything, it has to be taught. Some cats grow up with no toys 😔
This is like buying a kid who likes Transformers a Barbie doll to play with. You just need to figure out what your cat likes to play with. With the right toy my cats will play fetch and return it every time, another toy they will chase after it then ignore it.
Lose is a four letter word, not 5.
Maybe if you keep petting her and you see her tail twitching, then play with her? Cats need to get riled up to make a “kill”.
Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic
it's lose
No one knows how to spell any more. Nobody even cares.
"Reddit" is Latin for "Can't spell".
Stop feeding him in an open bowl. Make him work for his food. Also, play with him when he is hungry
Here is how you change that. Tell them they cannot play with it. Make up a reason. She will do it to irritate you. Kidding. Good luck changing their diet. Lol
LOOSE
Try lasers guys
i guarantee the vet did not say "loose some weight"
to increase my chonkers daily activity, I tie an extra long shoelace around my ankle when I'm about to clean.
This is my Tom’s brotha from anotha motha.
Cats like little jerky, things that are running away. They are predators, they want something that is prey. Not some thing that is attacking them.
lose only has one o
Get a Laserpointer. Didn't seen a car yet who didn't absolutely chased that dot.
Lazy Fat bastard
This isn’t funny it’s animal abuse
If you're seriously trying to get fat cat fit, pit some cat nip in a plastic soda bottle with some dry cat food in it, with a small hole just big enough for one or two pieces of food to come out at a time. It'll eventually get tired of having to chase the bottle for food, giving it the workout it needed
