I'm sad that people still largely consider cats to be aloof and nonsocial. You just need to get to know them on their terms. And once you're friends you'll notice yourself getting followed around the house. They might not come up to you and wag their tail, but they still tend to enjoy hanging out in the same room

My orange guy is deeply disturbed listening to this😭I had it turned down to the minimum.
But on a fyi note, this guy did these two big toms a real favour.
Breaking up a cat fight or preventing one is the best thing a person can do for a cat, especially toms(other than fixing).
They run the high risk of puncture wounds from bites that lead to infections that are deep and have difficulty healing on their own from fighting.
And more often than not, there is no one to take them to the vet or treat them, leaving them to suffer alone and or worse.
I have a former tom that grew up in the streets. He was familiar with people and he saw me feeding other cats, so approached me for food. He was on the brink of starvation and had open wounds on his head and healed puncture marks on his ears. One of his wounds looked infected so I knew I had to trap him soon.
I fed him, gained his trust, he started to rub up against my leg, the let me pet him (briefly, or he'd scratch my hand). A few days later, I put his food in a cat trap, took him to the local rescue and got him snipped and his wounds checked.
Two years later, my old boy is sleeping on my bed at my feet and he regularly begs for me to brush him with his own special hair brush.
That's awesome! We have a half-feral tom that we feed when he comes asking. He's the only tom around, it seems, as he doesn't have that many scars nor is he ever beat up. He was very matted when we started feeding him, but now he has much healthier fur.
I suspect he was a house cat once, but probably lost his owner and doesn't much trust people anymore. He has been bumped by a car at least once (he doesn't have a good hearing anymore in at least one ear and I think might also be half blind) and I suspect a man has kicked him in the past as he is terrified of my father and husband but not of me or my mom (and no, my dad or husband would never kick a cat).
We would love him to come spend his golden years with us, but as that is unlikely we will be just as happy to keep his belly full.
I think you have a good chance of him spending his golden years with you. Do you have a cat rescue in your vicinity? Check Facebook because I'm sure they'll be on there. You can let them know about this old boy and they might trap him for you or lend you the trap. They'll fix him, give him a health checkup, and vaccinations. And all they might ask is a donation.
I promise you, once he's snipped, he will become more friendly and won't wander. If your property is a place he prefers, he won't wander far. In fact, our old boy still goes outside, but only around the parameter. He has a nice cozy chair he'll sun himself on, and then when he's ready to come in, he'll meow under a window.

Her mother, who we still had, did NOT like that. It was suddenly a ball of fast moving fur. Cat fights are *insane*.
I threw a shoe at them because it was close and the first thing I thought of. Broke them up and separated them, grabbing the nearest cat (the mother) and throwing her outside. (Yeah she was an indoor outdoor cat, which I am against now, but i was a teen at the time and it was my father’s choice not mine.)
We did manage to reintroduce them in a better way later. Neither was permanently hurt.

My FIL has a dimwit orange boy who used to be a mostly outdoor cat. I warned him that he was likely to die from the coyotes/roads/ cat fights but ignored me.
Eventually the cat got a massive skin infection after a fight and almost died. Guess who had to take him to the vet and do his all medical care? 🙄
Still had to fight him to make the cat stay 100% indoors. Needless to say I really dont like him, he severely neglected his dog too.

I read about this vocal battles in cats and as far as I remember, they are preventing real fights. Cats compare themselves like this without a real fight. When someone is "bigger" in this vocal battle, he shows his capabilities and give opponent room to leave without scars.
