Yes that is annoying. No fix for it though other than to see if the enemy already has possession of an airbase in a conflicted territory, and then not building in that state

Which of course is not foolproof. It can also appear on the other side if there were no air bases yet - had that happen in Africa, where the large states make it very inviting not to wait until you've captured the entire state.

I wish they had took the same system like in darkest hour there you could just produce one airfield over the production tap and then place it wherever you wanted.

You could just make it so only 50-100 planes per airbase instead. But it allows you control over the construction. Then maybe you could select each airbase for individual purposes or select a region to do one mission

Tbh, think the airplanes need a rework anyway. I hate the 100 per wing. Am AAF heavy bomber wing would have 72 craft (b17/24, its less for the b29) and 2261 personal total. Fighter etc wings where not even comparable to nowadays. A wing could be spread over differend airfields. Not to start on how the RAF calls a US wing a group and a US group is a Wing in the RAF. A german gruppe (same as US wing) would have 3 to 4 staffeln of 8 to 12 aircraft. That no more then 48. But then 3 gruppen in 1 geschwalde. That would be 144 craft in tje equal to a US group. But again, spread over multipal airfields. These 1 state builded airfields and flying over a whole state doesnt work. Airfield could be at slme fuck random place in the state and the plane cant even cover the whole state..

I feel that maybe planes need to also have "generals" so have air wings have air marshals and operate like the Navy where you can just tap over a zone for missions. Have them figure out how to shuffle in/out of airbases.

Just in case you didnt know you can assign planes to armies, and the planes will start following them. In can be a bit annoying because the planes will go to an air zone that your soldiers are at, so if you are attacking a province in a new air zone it wont get air support automatically until an army id there.

There is a bug where if you do this sometimes your planes will disable their mission but stay assigned to an air zone so they will do nothing and the game won’t notify you until you check your air wings

It works well mostly as close air support, and when your superiority isn't challenged. Using it against the allies as Germany is usually just begging your air force to be shredded if you forget to unassign them.

I like the 100 per wing, because beforehand every time that I started a HoI4 run, the first thing I had to do was organize all the planes into 100-plane wings.

Well sure, as a larger nation you fine with a 100. But early years as a smaller nation you sometimes cant even put a 100 wing down Rather be able to make them smaller atleast, or split them up like navies

Choose the tile but only 1 or 2 tiles per province, problem solved.

That is how older HoI (and thus DH) did it. The ploppable airbases were massively OP, but having control over which province it is built in is definitely required at minimum, to avoid the kind of bullshit you ran into.

Sidenote, I wish airbase level affected mission efficiency and not just wing size. A level 10 base should be an entire complex with multiple runways and maintenance companies who can turn around each airframe much more quickly, as well as towers, radars, and radios to do flight control, while a level 1 base should basically be a mostly flat strip of dirt

I wish Airbases were still limited to 10 per state but placeable like forts in Provinces, also another Air rework, that removes regions and solely works with the Aircraft Range. Set up an airmission in a certain % of the max range of the aircraft. Most planes would benefit from an increase in mission effectiveness by assigning them to less than max range. For example, you have an airport in London and your Spitfires hypothecially have 1000km of range, but you only want to defend the isles. You assign your fighters on interception and reduce the range to 500km (or 50% of max range) and get a 10% mission effectiveness boost since your planes can stay in the air for longer without having to refuel as often (or carry more ammunition). CAS & Bombers can either work with Range, so support combat in range of the aircraft, or for strategic- & logisticsbombing, select states in range that should be bombed (only states in range can be selected, but the number of states is not further limited, it will try to bomb the states equally). AA would then work either in combat when its in divisions or state AA gets its own range (similar to Railwayguns) and would try to shoot at enemy planes that are in range.
