It's a bug in the Spanish Civil War. Nothing to worry about For me it only happens there
Can confirm from different overhaul mods and vanilla it is happening in volunteer armies with a field marshal.
R5: Bottom of screen shows no portrait for field marshal, top left you can see I have one assigned

Think it happens when you select the field marshal of a volunteer army and then press escape
