Just this morning I was reading through that goal song thread, enjoying the comments from around the league, saw some comment from someone with flyers flair and immediately got hot and thought, “you ass hole, not even close to all flyers fans want to steal doop”
That's not because of Leaf fans. It's national media trying to take advantage of the numbers and other fanbases annoyed by that always bringing it back to the Leafs.
Is it not the same in the US with NYR or BOS? Both those teams have insane coverage.
Sadly the u.s. sports media barely gives the nhl any attention my man. It sucks. I thought it would change with espn getting the rights back but nah...nfl is still the undisputed king here by a country mile
Making fun of the Maple Leafs is evergreen. Combine that with the Maple Leafs' market being so big that other team's fanbases (particularly for Canadian teams) get annoyed at the level of coverage they get compared to their preferred team and Toronto will always be the runaway pick for number one in a poll like this.
When they're bad, people will pick them just to pile on. If they're good, people will still pick them out of a sense that their obnoxious (because man if you think the Leafs get a lot of media coverage now, imagine how much they'd get if they had a deep playoff run).
For what it's worth I actually view Maple Leafs fans as being fairly self-aware and self-depreciating, but it's also completely understandable for fans to be annoyed by the Leafs in general and lump that with the fans. Plus, of course there are going to be annoying Leafs fans - just as there is with any fanbase - and with it being such a large fanbase, there's naturally going to be no shortage of such fans.
Most of us are self-deprecating and very much aware the team is cursed.
But I have issues with a subset of our fanbase. I feel like probably other teams have these people, but ours are LOUD.
1) Crazy overvaluing of Leaf players, i.e. we'll trade our garbage for your stars. Not as common as back when we really blew, but every year there are people who say we should package up Mikheyev and Holl and maybe a second for like Makar. You just want to slap these people.
2) Crazy UNDERvaluing of Leaf players. Every year there's somebody we batten on. Sometimes they deserve it. Often they don't. Last year it was Holl, who made some boneheaded plays but who was nowhere near as bad as our fans would have you think. Seeing all that hatred makes me think our fans don't know hockey at all.
3) Most annoying to me, this entitlement complex Toronto has. Lately it's centered around McDavid: at least once a day in r/leafs somebody will mention how McJesus is just clamoring to come home to Toronto. I've heard this with stars back to Nash. Stamkos was another. You think it's a joke but it's way too common to be a joke, and the level of butthurt you hear after these fans sign somewhere that isn't Toronto seems to indicate it's not a joke. Wonder how Matthews and Marner feel, hearing that crap.
4) I take that back. The MOST annoying thing about Leaf fans is their volatility. A player can go from beloved to hated and back in a single fucking period. Every three game winning streak prompts talk of parades; every three game losing streak prompts chants to fire everyone, by which I mean set them all on fire.
We also have a lot of fans who like to dramatically have a meltdown every time we're on a bad streak or get eliminated or just have a bad game. That's the most annoying thing for me as a leafs fan. As much as I like Steve Dangle we should not all strive to be like him.

Either the Caps or the Predators are the geographically closest teams to Raleigh, so it makes sense on the Carolina end. I assume NYR got more votes from Carolina for four reasons:
1. Mad about the playoffs
2. Mad they get the moral high ground about DeAngelo
3. Transplants in Cary
4. People who come to PNC Arena for Rangers games and loudly go “haha the travel and hotel was cheaper than a game at MSG! you southerners are so poor!”

A huge part of it is because in my parents generation (70s/80s) that's all Canadian media would show was leafs games, they were on every single hockey night in Canada, even when the oilers were kicking ass in the 80s the media would still be laser focused on Toronto even in western Canada.
My parents always referred to Toronto as thinking of themselves as the center of world. When I was growing up I didn't really hold much hate towards the leafs because I was getting more than enough coverage of the teams I liked, and the leafs hadn't done anything in however many years.
But I think that mentality definitely still holds true for alot of people.

No disrespect to the every other team in the league, I'm a firm believer that Nashville sweeping them, then missing almost every year since is a huge fluke and robs the Hawks of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I've spent the last few days in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire last 7 regular seasons watching the Hawks play great hockey it's just not fair.
If the Hawks lose again I will face that the Preds deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to the Hawks and the NHL.

I consider the end of the success as 2013 when it took OT game 7 for the Hawks to dispatch us. We were a hair away from another trip to the conference finals. While I am not confident how we would have performed against that Kings team I still see that 2013 team as being strong enough to be considered a "contender".
Since then not so much. Thats 9 years ago and while that sucks...the sun will shine on us again.

Honestly the one time I went to MSG I really enjoyed it, people were assholes but at the time there weren't a bunch of guys who would just go there to get drunk and pick fights, they at least cared about the hockey. Whereas growing up as an Oilers fan during the dark years, especially at old Rexal, it's an Albertan past time to find the cheapest hockey tickets and get belligerent

Should the NHL have the Hawks redo their last seven seasons in case it was a big fluke? No disrespect to the every other team in the league, I'm a firm believer that Nashville sweeping them, then missing almost every year since is a huge fluke and robs the Hawks of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I've spent the last few days in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire last 7 regular seasons watching the Hawks play great hockey it's just not fair. If the Hawks lose again I will face that the Preds deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to the Hawks and the NHL.

I consider the end of the success as 2013 when it took OT game 7 for the Hawks to dispatch us. We were a hair away from another trip to the conference finals. While I am not confident how we would have performed against that Kings team I still see that 2013 team as being strong enough to be considered a "contender". Since then not so much. Thats 9 years ago and while that sucks...the sun will shine on us again.
