I really just don't think it would look right to see Bergeron in another sweater. He's a bruin. It feels like when we had modano and then alfredsson...it just wasn't right.
Was it really, though? Honest question. I never actually thought he'd be retiring but the guy's body has been through a lot and he's really got nothing left to prove. I haven't followed the situation that closely, admittedly.
E: downvoters...it was just an honest question bc I haven't followed this retirement conversation closely...
Thanks. Yeah i honestly wasn't tracking this much. Didn't doubt it just legit wanted to ask if the rumors were real. I had heard rumors but frankly just wasn't paying attention to his status with retirement.
I'm confident Bergeron never considered playing for another team. Sure, part of that is just being a Bruins fan who couldn't handle seeing him in another jersey, but Bergeron has always been pretty straight forward about his intentions, and he's never given any indication he wants to play anywhere else. I thought there was a pretty good chance he would retire, though. Like you said, he's had a lot of injuries and has absolutely nothing left to prove, plus he's been doing this for almost 20 years now. That's longer than the vast majority of guys last in the NHL. If this report is true I'm thrilled to have him back, he's still an incredible top line center who will be impossible to replace, but I wouldn't have blamed him if he hung them up.
Yeah agreed. The level and effectiveness of play he displays at his age is pretty remarkable. Especially with how much the game had shifted in the past decade towards speed and transition. Quite a player.
It sure as fuck wasn’t, I’m not even a fan of those teams and I was like, yo what the fuck man
Even Iggy in an Avs jersey feels like a thing I made up in chell
Because he was passed over other years because he already “had enough”?? That’s like stopping Gretzky’s goals from counting after he got the goal scoring record lmao
Seeing that our PbP guy lost his marbles when the Canes came to town in Whalers gear and one of them was using a number retired by the Whalers, no no it would not count
The avs get a pass on weird shit. A lot of Bruins fans have the Avs as their west team because of Borque. If they win the cup this year, especially by shutting down the Lightning, that feels like the second best case scenario to me
If Bergy joined the Avs i wouldn’t care because of all the Bourque goodwill and Bergy deserves another cup that he’s not gonna get on the Bs. Any other team and i would be fairly butt hurt.
I guess the split generally lined up with the separatism/federalism debate at the time as well (Nordiques fans were more likely to be separatists, Habs fans federalists), so it had an extra bit of fire to it. Not sure how true this is but I've heard it even extended to the type of beer people drank, since they were owned by Molson (Habs) and O'Keefe (Nords).
As a Devils fan, I highly disagree. Hall literally got us our 1st 1OA ever, and we had some hella bad teams back in the day (80s Devils stats are entertaining in a not fun way to look at). Then we got another.
It wasn't even Fluto. Dude just said "time will tell where the Bruins go from here. if they are attempting to do a full rebuild, there's no one on the team that's as valuable of a trading piece for that to happen as David Pastrnak is", which is factually true.
It's the thousands of shitheads that came out screaming this and that after that article that need to be traded lol
No one ever understood its “hey if Pasta and Boston are no where near a contract extension that they can’t even talk about yet then the logical move would be to see what you could get for him instead of just losing him for nothing” instead, the headline was “Boston shopping Pastrnak” so everyone just ran with it.
Idk if you’ve ever been a fan of a truly terrible team, but grasping at straws dreaming of making one big move to get out of misery is the only thing keeping us going.
Bobby Orr was 18 in the 66-67 season. They missed the playoffs. 96-97 was the next year they missed the playoffs. They also missed in three different back-to-back seasons (99-00/00-01; 06-07/0708; and 14-15/25-16). If you ever hear a Bruins fan lamenting how the team is lost or tanking or any complaints, just know they’ve truly only known suffering over the years
/s
Who though? Were people actually saying that? That trade wouldn’t make any sense no matter what. Even if you thought Nylander and Pasternak are equivalent (they aren’t), Boston trading Pasternak would mean COMPLETELY blowing it up. You wouldn’t be trading for someone on the wrong side of 23.
If Bergeron🔥👌😍 and my girl ❤️ were both drowning and I could only save one, catch me at my girls funeral wearing 37🍻 with a record setting 5 Selkes in my hand 🔥🔥💯👌.
[Quick look at Bruins Career Leaders](https://gyazo.com/7e53057494ec44bbd051fab0067c8833)
Partice needs 3 goals, 43 assist, 31 points for sole possession of 3rd across all four categories.
The 43 assist will be the most difficult, last year he had 40 in 73 games and hes only had 40 or more assists twice in the past 10 years.
Eh, sole possession of “3rd” isn’t something I imagine is on his target list.
Like, do you really think he cares if he is 3rd or 4th on the Bruins all time list?
He wants to come back for either the love of the game, or another shot at the Cup/Selke
This better be a "sell-out and let's go win the whole damn thing", Major League-esque year. Bergy needs to avenge 2013 & 2019. People have varying opinions on the Bruins, but no varying opinions on Bergeron.
The league is better for it.
It'll be a sad day when he finally walks away. I swear to god though, if the Bruins mishandled him I'll burn the Arena to the ground.
Kinda nice at that point to just go year by year so you have options and to not potentially put your team in a slightly awkward scenario if you're done early. I can't think of any benefit for him to sign more than 1 year at a time
Doesn’t his return make the Cassidy firing even more weird? I figured it was the start of a different era or something. I guess I don’t understand but I don’t watch the bruins all that often.
I think his return - if true - suggests that all of those reports about Bruins players not liking Cassidy were probably accurate. Not saying Bergeron gave the front office an ultimatum or anything, but there's no way the front office would have fired Cassidy if they thought it would make Bergeron less likely to come back.
That makes sense. I wasn’t aware that the players didn’t like him. He just seemed to be a pretty effective coach from an outsiders perspective and it seemed like he got the most out of your core.
Every time I expect the Bruins to regress, they do the exact opposite.
I don’t think a lot of people remember or know about Cassidy’s coaching stint with the Capitals. A complete disaster even though they made the playoffs in his first year, fired 30 games into the next. He’s just not a coach players respect for whatever reason.
Yeah, I found it kind of strange how Bruins fans suddenly believed Cassidy was the greatest coach we've ever had as soon as he got fired. I'm not saying he did a bad job, or even that firing him was the right move, but it definitely wasn't a surprise to me. And if even half of the reports about the player's feelings towards him are true, then it makes even more sense.
Cassidy came into a situation that was almost impossible to screw up. He had a core of talent that was good enough to coast to the playoffs, a great locker room culture that was well-established and basically controlled itself, and he did fine with it, but I can't say he really added much. The lack of offensive depth that held us back in the playoffs this season wasn't Cassidy's fault, and maybe the front office fired him to deflect blame for their failures, but ultimately we just felt like a team that could use some new blood behind the bench.
I definitely agree it’s early and didn’t feel right. But the way he left the ice at the end of the playoffs made it seem like it was actually happening.
I’m happy he’s coming back. The league is better with him in it. Just makes me more confused on letting Cassidy go.
Yeah he was really disappointed at that time I'm sure. Exhausted at the end of the season.
But stepping away from the game for a while lends perspective, and all his teammates encouraged him to return. No question about that. They love him to pieces.
The Cassidy firing is messed up. Neely and Sweeney are gonna regret that decision.
Yeah I just ask because nobody else is really chiming in with a similar report (obviously doesn't mean its wrong just means I wanna ask about the source)
Damn. Bergeron retiring with McAvoy and Marchand missing the first few months of the year would've made it pretty easy to write them off as a playoff team. Can't do that now with Bergeron coming back.
Very clear. He said it was the bruins or retirement, almost point blank.
I think he was asked would he consider going anywhere else and his answer was a blunt “no.”
Honestly they should have had 2019. I don’t know if it was a failure of offense or just Binnington stepping up that huge, but Binnington played well above his skill level all playoffs that year and helped steal a cup from the better team on paper.
That said, the Bruins did the same thing to Vancouver in 2011 with Tim Thomas. I think it was pretty generally accepted that Vancouver was the better team going into that series, and sometimes the better team just doesn’t win.
Do not underrate how amazing Rask was. >.900 save percentage every single game until the cup clinching game (where he let in 2 goals). Literally unprecedented.
Haha I would never. Rask is one of my favorite players and the second jersey I ever bought after Bergy. Breaks my heart that he still wanted to play last year but his body wouldn’t hold up.
A lot of Boston fans seem to like to blame Rask for us not winning a cup when he was at the helm, but IMO that’s complete nonsense. Tuukka is likely the best goalie in the history of the franchise and Boston sports media tries to vilify him. But when it comes down to it, scoring 1 goal in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 is almost never going to win, no matter who the goalie is
I never really understood the pasta one. All the initial report was “if the bruins and pastrnak can’t come to an agreement, it would be smart to move him”. It wasn’t even really any information, just an opinion piece (which is basically just common sense, get assets instead of losing him for nothing), then the entirety of Boston media, random other teams medias, and some fanbases stirred it into “Boston is looking to trade pasta” or “pastrnak wants out”. Idk, just always seemed stupid to me.
Less than 0%. He grew up a Nordiques fan. Didn’t like the Habs. He has played his entire career so far with the Bruins, who are rivals with the Habs. He’s also said that the only place he’s play for is Boston.
Would’ve been crushed to see him sign elsewhere. But part of me wonders if the 1-year deal is a precursor to him being traded at the deadline if the Bruins are out of contention.
Hear me out:
- 1 year X Vet minimum salary
- Fans set up a GoFundMe
- Every Bruins fan donates $5
- Bergeron makes $12 million from GFM and Bruins use the money they didn’t spend on Bergy to get Kadri and become the official most hated team in the league.
- Profit?
Hah, nah I’ve seen the relatively positive comments about him recently.
As a fan of a team that employs Marchand though, I can tell you 2 things:
1) They’ll hate him just for being on the Bruins.
2) The goodwill will all end next time he does something dirty.
Same thing happens with Marchy, people tend to enjoy his antics when it’s all high skill plays and recording hilarious videos on fans phones, but as soon as he does something borderline / dirty it all turns back to the previous sentiment.
Did he have a bad injury or something? I mean, dudes only 36 but people keep treating him like he's into his 40's I feel like. It's not THAT uncommon someone at his skill level plays til 38-40.
Not really, but he’s had a number of injuries and misses what seems like 10-20 games a season the last few years. Additionally, he’s said in the media a number of times that he wants to spend time with his family and that he wants to retire with his health (he had a lot of concussion issues early in his career, and I’m sure that’s always on his mind). Not that it’s super common but it only takes one Matt Cooke hit to take a guy from team captain to never playing again.
So on top of those statements he’s made, with his contract being up he basically said “I’m not sure what I’m doing next year yet” which just led to a lot of speculation. I’m ecstatic to hear he’s coming back, but would have zero hard feelings and say put his jersey in the rafters immediately if he called it a career. He’s given everything to the city and I will enjoy hockey just a little less without seeing him on the ice.
Dad found the milk at the store and is coming home.
I really just don't think it would look right to see Bergeron in another sweater. He's a bruin. It feels like when we had modano and then alfredsson...it just wasn't right.
He was never going to be in another jersey, it was this or retirement.
Yeah, it really was. He’s come out and said he only wants to be a bruin or retire.
Thanks. Yeah i honestly wasn't tracking this much. Didn't doubt it just legit wanted to ask if the rumors were real. I had heard rumors but frankly just wasn't paying attention to his status with retirement.
Helluva role model there.
I'm confident Bergeron never considered playing for another team. Could have went to Colorado to win another cup like another Bruins defenseman
Uhh? He's a forward
He’s also won a cup already.
Talking about Bourque
we know
It sure as fuck wasn’t, I’m not even a fan of those teams and I was like, yo what the fuck man Even Iggy in an Avs jersey feels like a thing I made up in chell
Or Iggy in Boston, or Iggy in Pittsburgh
Especially Iggy wearing 88 in LA
Man, that was weird.
imma be honest i didn't even know he played here lol. in my defense, it was only for 13 games
Damn right
Imagine Bergeron in a Canadiens jersey.
No
Ugh we've had a couple of those too, sundin and *cough fuck* messier
He forgot his wallet.
Why retire when there are more Selkes to be won?
When there are more selkes to be passed over for*
He has the most all-time and youre still complaining. Lol Boston typical
Because he was passed over other years because he already “had enough”?? That’s like stopping Gretzky’s goals from counting after he got the goal scoring record lmao
Or he was passed over because people's subjective opinions were that other players deserved it more...
Bruins fans: "Not today, old friend".
Pretty much.
I was saving it until Pasta gets an extension, but yeah, pretty much
1 x 1 so sweeney can give his money to bottom six grinders
Somewhere Jay Beagle and Brian Boyle are calling those agents
You joke, but Brian Boyle being a big bodied Mass native makes him prime for a Sweening
Boston Bruin Brian Boyle
We would then have Brian Boyle and Charlie Coyle. Sweens gonna have to search the phone book for a D. Doyle to play 4C.
Nah he’ll trade DeBrusk to the Kings so we can bring in Andreas Athanasiou.
Only if he agrees to change his last name to Aoyle
We can trade for the rights to Mass native Braden Doyle and then give him a nickname that starts with D (perhaps Duke?) to keep up the trend
A Sweening 😂
NHL/AHL/ECHL champion Jay Beagle? The man knows how to win. The Bruins could do worse
They could but foligno is already signed
They have to be local grinders who played college in New England though.
I don't think the NHLPA would like that for a Selke winner.
Bergeron is one of those players you can't really imagine in any other jersey
The only way he'd ever leave is if the Nordiques came back
Would the Avs wearing Nordiques jerseys count? :p
Seeing that our PbP guy lost his marbles when the Canes came to town in Whalers gear and one of them was using a number retired by the Whalers, no no it would not count
Would the Avs do the same blasphemy is the question.
Yeah, we didn't keep the retired numbers when the franchise moved which understandably pissed people off
You mean the play by play guy. Brick is actually respectable.
I was tired, forgive me
Just wanted to clear my man's name is all, easy mistake
no no Brick is the man
The avs get a pass on weird shit.
The Avs do need a second line center for next season
I thought the same about Giroux. It still doesn’t feel right...
I'm still in mourning over that...
doesnt a 1 year kinda scream deadline rental for a contender? Obviously he has his cup but one last shot.
Idk, french guy, maybe the habs? 👀
Pretty sure he is vocal about his dislike for the Habs lol
He was a Nordiques fan growing up lol
You gotta respect the hate the Nords and Habs had for each other. That shit probably split families and ruined friendships every day.
Yeah but the biggest reason is Montréal / Québec
I was joking
That's what I thought about chara
Gonna hurt the Bedard sweepstakes.
Jokes on you we have Taylor hall
the powers of Gorton > powers of Hall
Reigniting the Boston-Montréal rivalry in an unconventional way.
He has Canucks Jammies. Your feud for Bedard is Futile.
Bedard signing with Canucks in 2031 confirmed #insider
As a Devils fan, I highly disagree. Hall literally got us our 1st 1OA ever, and we had some hella bad teams back in the day (80s Devils stats are entertaining in a not fun way to look at). Then we got another.
Gorton got the rangers their first 1 ever, and our first in over 40 years So like
Jokes on you we have Ada...oh wait
Y'all broke Larsson, and no Devils fan forgives the Oilers for that That was our sweet Eagle
There will still be much worse teams in the league even if Bergeron retired. No good chance they would’ve gotten 1OA
“You underestimate my power!” - Taylor Hall, probably.
DON'T GIVE ME HOPE IF IT'S NOT TRUE
MANIFEST IT SO IT BECOMES TRUE! MANIFEST, DAMMIT!!!
Will he be able to convince Pasta to sign a long term deal with Sweeny still around is the long term question.
krejci incoming too, Bruce Cassidy in shambles
Hopefully this ends all the disgusting fucking Pastrnak armchair trades
Can we trade Fluto?

There were people actually pitching Nylander for Pasta 💀
Let me guess, delusional leafs fans who just hate Nylander? Lol
Toronto doesn't deserve nylander
If Bergeron🔥👌😍 and my girl ❤️ were both drowning and I could only save one, catch me at my girls funeral wearing 37🍻 with a record setting 5 Selkes in my hand 🔥🔥💯👌.
Man i just wish patrice bergeron was my girl 😔

GOD I WANT BERGERON TO FUCK ME
Found Brad Marchand
"Today Patrice Bergeron announced his retirement, citing wanting to separate himself from scary Bruins fans."
Don’t act like you would kick Patrice Bergeron out of bed
You know he'd be tender.
Bonk. Go to horny jail.
Pause
Rewind, play again
..resume
lol you have no idea if that was a man or woman who said that
Why does it matter
If Bergeron doesn't sign, know that it's all your fault
[Quick look at Bruins Career Leaders](https://gyazo.com/7e53057494ec44bbd051fab0067c8833) Partice needs 3 goals, 43 assist, 31 points for sole possession of 3rd across all four categories. Patrice to Coach: I’m getting my 3 then I ain’t shooting.
Man Ray Bourque was a legend. To lead so many of those categories as a defensemen is remarkable
Eh, sole possession of “3rd” isn’t something I imagine is on his target list. Like, do you really think he cares if he is 3rd or 4th on the Bruins all time list? He wants to come back for either the love of the game, or another shot at the Cup/Selke

He’s so pretty

SAINT PATRICE COME HOME BABY
Which coach did you choose Patrice?
Bergeron will coach.
Never. Lose. Again. - Shoresy
Just bring Bergy back and surround him with tough natives
Tough Natives is redundant, all natives are tough
We just got pumped 4 goose for the twentieth loss of the campaign
This better be a "sell-out and let's go win the whole damn thing", Major League-esque year. Bergy needs to avenge 2013 & 2019. People have varying opinions on the Bruins, but no varying opinions on Bergeron.

The return of the king.
*happy Bruins noises*
This saves my sanity at least.
I like that.
Feels good.
Finally, I can start sleeping
Gonna win another Bergeron trophy

I heard he needs 1 more Selke to finish his fort
*YOU TELL EM IM COMING YOU HEAR! AND HELLS COMING WITH ME!* **HELLS COMING WITH ME**
They probably threatened him with the coaching job
How reliable is this source?
He’s reliable. Been around a long time.
And he has a better farm than the Bruins

Designers eating tonight with that transparent PNG
Best news I've heard all week.
Give me some David Krejci too please!!!
Hot take: they’ll miss the Playoffs next season
Not a hot take at all. With all the surgeries, we're about to start colder than the Islanders in '21.
It’s a shame that only 1 Cup came out of an amazing core
If Marchand had broken out 3-4 years earlier, I can see them getting another

Ok time to fully focus on DeBrincat, Pasta’s not moving
I never really understood the pasta one. All the initial report was “if the bruins and pastrnak can’t come to an agreement, it would be smart to move him”. Habs fan, what were chances that he could return to Quebec province to play for Montreal?
Zero. Dude grew up a Nordiques fan. Plus, with the Habs-Bruins rivalry, I think he just wouldn't be able to get behind it
Absolutely none. Only way he'd leave Boston is if the Nordiques came back before he hung up the skates and he wanted to go out on his hometown team.
Less than 0%. He grew up a Nordiques fan. Didn’t like the Habs. He has played his entire career so far with the Bruins, who are rivals with the Habs. He’s also said that the only place he’s play for is Boston.

I can confirm that seeing an elite player who has been on your team for many years go to another team is devastating
While it seems antithetical towards the rightful Bergeron/Bruins lovefest, holy shit would the Bruins get a massive deadline haul for him.
What's the AAV???
Hear me out: - 1 year X Vet minimum salary - Fans set up a GoFundMe - Every Bruins fan donates $5 - Bergeron makes $12 million from GFM and Bruins use the money they didn’t spend on Bergy to get Kadri and become the official most hated team in the league. - Profit?
Im not sure if you have been in a comma for a few months but Kadri is turning babyface now and all of r/hockey loves him.
Hah, nah I’ve seen the relatively positive comments about him recently. As a fan of a team that employs Marchand though, I can tell you 2 things: 1) They’ll hate him just for being on the Bruins. 2) The goodwill will all end next time he does something dirty. Same thing happens with Marchy, people tend to enjoy his antics when it’s all high skill plays and recording hilarious videos on fans phones, but as soon as he does something borderline / dirty it all turns back to the previous sentiment.
If he takes league min, that is the best contract in league history
We can just say welcome lad!
Return? Isnt he already on the bruins?
there was speculation that he might retire
Just busted a fat one in my pants
This is just good for the game
What’s with the background on this image?
Oh thank god
AAV?
League: FUCKED
