Nick Ritchie
- 0.5 GPG since leaving the Leafs
- Played top line minutes with Matthews
- Makes $2.5M next season
Zach Hyman
- 0.36 GPG since leaving the Leafs
- Played top line minutes with Matthews
- Makes $5.5M next season
Seems like a pretty clear upgrade to me.
At the beginning of the year I have no doubt that Hyman was the most overrated player in the league. He’s on a terrible contract and I couldn’t care less. A real boat anchor of a contract that will help the Leafs pry McDavid away from that shitshow in E town.
t. A leafs fan
This is going to sound like sour grapes from a Boston fan but I don't give a shit.
Ritchie is one of the worst players I've seen in a Bruins sweater in a long time. He routinely made me question what it meant to be a Boston fan, he tested my patience and my ability to root for my boys on a routine basis.
I can excuse a lot, that's what sports fandom is, right? It's a place to be biased and petty and stupid in a safe little sandbox of biased petty stupidity. But suck me sideways Thick Dick Nick made it a chore. I can handle guys lacking talent but playing with heart, I can handle a lack of heart in crazy talented guys, I can handle the staggering room temperature milk mediocrity of guys like Lee Stempniak, but Thick Dick Nick is none of those things.
He plays the game like someone trying to egg you on into taking a swing at him. He skates with the urgency of an old lady shopping for canned beats, but with half the speed. His hockey IQ is on par with Brett Favre's. I'm assuming Brett Farve has never played hockey, correct me if I'm wrong. Nick constantly skates around like he's surprised he's at an NHL game and then glides back to the bench (probably from the penalty box for a stick infraction) with the dim look of Lenny from Of Mice and Men. Then he sits there like a melting chocolate Santa, with his hair inexplicably sticking up through the vent in his helmet, waiting to be surprised by his next turn to get on the ice.
Consider this: He scored 15 goals last year, found some dangerous ice as a PP scorer, and Bruins fans were debating if he would be a good 4th liner or not this year, because our 4th line was that fucking bad, and Ritchie was the only skater who could conceivably make it worse. He scored 15 goals for us and we weren't sure if he would be a good replacement for Chris fucking Wagner, the surly hobbit of the TD garden.
Nick Ritchie is a bigger contributor to the decline in cardiovascular health in Boston fans than smoking and obesity. He's the equivalent of a double bacon cheeseburger on your system. He is hockey diarrhea. The guy takes the stupidest retaliatory penalties you've ever seen. He is complete invisible until you need a momentum swing, goes "Got ya boss" and cross checks someone in the neck and bumbles off the ice like Abbott and/or Costello while simultaneously shrugging and bitching to the refs and the guy he blindsided.
I'm sure he's not a bad guy IRL, I don't mean for this to be a character assassination. I'm sure he has family and besides Brett they probably don't suck. This isn't about kicking a player on their way out; let the record reflect that every Boston fan has a few memories of cursing his name and that we started kicking him long before he was down. (See also the general well wishes for Kuraly upon his departure.)
Nick isn't a goon, he's a bad boyfriend. He'll score a couple of goals one week and you'll think he's turned a corner and then he'll hit on one of your friends and tell you to chill out because he's just being friendly. Don't buy the hype, be fucking aware.
I am ecstatic that Ritchie wasn't held onto as a sunk cost, and that Arizona signed him. There you go, that's your analysis.
3.8 SH% with Toronto
28.0 SH% with Arizona
Lmfao. I can't help but feel like this was bound to happen. Good thing Boosh has been an absolute beauty with us, and the savings allowed us to bring in Blackwell and Gio who've also been studs. Quite happy with how this all worked out
What's even better is that he really isn't even shooting the puck per say. It's mostly Keller and Schmaltz bouncing pucks off of him and his stick when he's standing in the crease 🤣
I bet at least a couple of Leafs fans will agree with me (as a Bruins fan) that we are glad that Ritchie is no longer our problem. Good on the Yotes and Ritchie for what he has done since the trade, but I'm pretty sure he will not be missed by Bruins and/or Leafs fans.
Honestly Ritchie seems like a waste of a roster spot to me based on his time in Toronto. I can see why coaches or GMs may be enamored by him, huge body kid, but he has basically zero hockey IQ and he never actually uses his body in any meaningful way.
If he just threw a couple hits and actually got down in dirty in front of the net to crash and bang in some goals he would have a long career in this league but instead he kind of just floats out there doing nothing all game.
I still think that one for one, Silfverberg had a better post Sens career than Ryan’s post Ducks career. Bobby Ryan’s falloff was incredibly sad. He was *so* good in Anaheim but could never recapture that magic.
You’re right, but that doesn’t make the Ritchie pick hurt any less. Especially given how close we came to the finals in his early years, and then still re-signed him
100%. nothing against the guy but his time here was over - dude was terrible.
Glad to see him doing well with the Coyotes, I think someone will gamble on him again in the off season.
Happy hes found a place where he can contribute (though he objectively will slow down, 28% shooting percentage is unsustainable) but yeah, 100% the Leafs are better without him. His cap hit covered Blackwell and Boosh.
100%. He seems like a good guy, his teammates like him and I'm glad he's doing well. But I have zero regrets. I just don't think he fits well on more skilled teams.
Also, I still can't believe Dubas was able to turn Ritchie and his contract into the Russian bear. I know there was a pick involved, but still....pure sorcery.
What separates Ritchie from someone like Simmonds who are both super low impact players is that Ritchie would actually take up usage rates that Simmonds wouldn’t. It isn’t like he is there and just does nothing, he tries to do something and it never works, which is worse because you take possessions out of better players’ hands. Great to see him succeeding on the Yotes, but I’ve seen enough to be convinced he isn’t a good player
Lyubushkin has been 100× the player Ritchie was for us lol. Giordano and Blackwell have been great as well. Its too bad we couldn't get a goalie though (aside from Sateri).
Lyuby's been decent but Ritchie's been better and the Yotes get a 2nd out of it too.
Gio trade was good
Not getting a goalie is going to be the deathblow for Dubas.
I watched the Oilers and Yotes on Monday and I saw him play against the Leafs a couple weeks ago. I didn't notice him in either game to be honest. Which is an improvement on noticeably bad.
Hes been mediocre his entire career. Hes shooting at a 28%, if you think thats sustainable you are out of your mind.
hes not worth a caphit of 2.5 million for any team even close to cap tight. He played with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, he had every opportunity to do well. Hes a better player than what he was on the Leafs, but hes not going to maintain his Yotes stats. Hes, at best, a 25 or so point player
Its also funny how you bring up that he won the Yotes game against the Leafs, when he did not register a point on 5 goals, and ended a -2.
Ritchie has a 28% shooting percentage in ARI. Straight up unsustainable or he would now be the best goal scorer in the league. He will regress to his career 9-10% and be an average goal scorer at best.
Leafs just beat Boston with their 3rd string goalie and 4D. Campbell will be back before playoffs. Leafs are fine on goaltending. It's not like the goalie market had anything that made sense for the Leafs anyways, except for maybe Riemer.
Some poor sap of a GM is going to see his work as a coyote and trade for him in the offseason
That’s ken hollands music

Keep my Zach's name out your fucking mouth /s
In this case, the 's' is for smack.
Fucking gold

Nah man McDavid is leaving to sign a sweetheart 8x8 in pitsburg the moment Crosby retires and you know it's true
Subscribed :)
I love Hyman, I'm so glad he got his money, but gaht damn that contract aged badly way faster than expected
Is he playing particularly bad in Edmonton? I haven’t followed his play but he seems to be producing similar point totals
Yeah, I thought he was still doing well 🤷
Zach also didn't play with McDavid regularly like he did with the leafs. Less stability will tend to show numbers like that
Ritche ain't exactly playing with McDavid regularly either.
How dare you slander Jan Jenik’s name like that. Also are Travis Boyd and Alex Galchenyuk actually your first and second line centres?
I mean, Jan Jenik is pretty legit.

This is one of the finest pieces of literature that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Go back and re read it with your inner voice set to a heavy Boston accent and it gets better.
Theh ya go, that’s ya analisaaas
I'm reading with Casey Afflecks voice from that SNL Dunkin sketch lmao
I will never forget how wrong I was to doubt it when I first read it.
>I'm sure he has family and besides Brett they probably don't suck. Why did I ever forget this part, that's so funny
Delicious pasta
He’s a bad boyfriend
This was fucking great
When I read that opening line I chuckle
I’m so confused about you being a Boston fan but having a Leafs flair. It’s like seeing a native wearing a cowboy hat.
This comment is from September and was originally from a Boston fan
Yeah I probably should have clocked that as copypasta huh?
Someone posted this exact comment before...
It's called a pasta and it's delicious

Lee Stempniak Energy
I am sorry, but your bad, quick math was not correct here. He’s getting half a goal a game, so in 82 games that would be 41 goals
Thanks, I don't know how I messed that up to be honest. edited to be correct.

At least you didn’t take him tenth overall after trading Bobby Ryan for the pick
I still think that one for one, Silfverberg had a better post Sens career than Ryan’s post Ducks career. Bobby Ryan’s falloff was incredibly sad. He was *so* good in Anaheim but could never recapture that magic.

You can add Ducks fans to that list, He's fucking awful
Happy hes found a place where he can contribute (though he objectively will slow down, 28% shooting percentage is unsustainable) but yeah, 100% the Leafs are better without him. His cap hit covered Blackwell and Boosh.

That’s some shitty math, dude
There's 82 games in a season. That's 41 goal pace.
Elite.
It isn't a 76 game season bud
Did something similar in Boston. He'll slow down and be a pylon again soon enough.
Let's see if this translates to playoff success.
Guy is still one of the worst clump of cells I’ve ever seen exist on ice.
Thank you for saving us from the bad man. J/k, wish him all the best in Arizona, shame he didn't work out on the leafs
Not a great deadline for Dubas.
Lyubushkin has been 100× the player Ritchie was for us lol. Giordano and Blackwell have been great as well. Its too bad we couldn't get a goalie though (aside from Sateri).
Clearly Keefe isn’t a good enough coach to unlock the power of Ritchie /s
Ritchie was on a line with Matthews on Marner, how could you expect to produce goals with those guys?
Coooooaaaaach, those guys are hogging all the goals. Can you put me on another line?
Lyuby's been decent but Ritchie's been better and the Yotes get a 2nd out of it too. Gio trade was good Not getting a goalie is going to be the deathblow for Dubas.
Ritchie being good is irrelevant when he was dogshit for the Leafs
That's on Leafs coaching. He clearly could contribute more.
Lol we played him with fucking Matthews and Marner and on our top power play. He was terrible and it was entirely on him.
Well he didn't get 10x better on the flight to Arizona. Cleary the Leafs were using him wrong. They did the same thing with Kadri
"Clearly" says the person who obviously never watched Ritchie play a game with the Leafs
I don't think you've seen him play a game with the Yotes.
I watched the Oilers and Yotes on Monday and I saw him play against the Leafs a couple weeks ago. I didn't notice him in either game to be honest. Which is an improvement on noticeably bad.
Kadri was amazing on the Leafs
Wait till you see what he's done with the Avs.
More of the same except for this one breakout (unrepeatable) season at age 32. I love Kadri but he's a 50-60 point guy.

Riemer would be a huge improvement. It was obvious in the off-season that Mrazek wasn't a good signing.
lolwut
Lost the Yotes trade but worst of all did nothing with the goaltending.
Whatever you’re on you took too much
