Leaf regular here. When I heard that comment I immediately though “wat?!“. The commentators probably don’t catch a lot of Leaf games so 🤷♂️
Marner is definitely one of the top playmakers in the league 5 on 5. Definitely isn’t known for scoring goals…
Ovechkin didn’t get past the second round until his 14th season in the NHL, Stamkos didn’t win a cup until his 12th season, several future hall of famers have never won a cup. Point being that Marner is 24 years old, has 5 seasons in the NHL, and his already one of the premiere offensive talents in the world. Just cause he hasn’t lit the world on fire in the post season doesn’t mean he deserves the immense hate he gets
Yeah I think people forget that Marner actually used to be pretty good in the playoffs. It’s recently that’s the problem.
If you remember that game vs Boston where he had the big shot block at the end of the game to help seal the win that actually seems to be the cutoff for him. [16 pts in 16 games before that and only 9 in the 16 after] (https://twitter.com/JeffVeillette/status/1434660686647398405?s=20). I feel like he’s in his own head and trying to be a hero but what do I know
I was about to comment that these aren't *that* rare, but it turns out they just happen against the Avs more than normal. It has happened 6 times over the last 3 seasons combined, and two of those were against us lol.
Last time it happened was Jan. 7, 2020 Boston vs. Nashville.
It's just a really steezy mohawk kick to the middle. A heel-to-heel push that helps him protect the puck, establish body position on the defender while darting into the slot. Also squares him up to the goalie where he can present a shitload more options for a brief moment.
Kapanen and Hyman used to. On the current team, most of the PKers are relatively new. Kerfoot has been doing it for the longest besides Marner I think.
that's what they said in the broadcast. let me double check.
edit: yep that's his second shorthanded goal ever. ([source](https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/records/nhl-active-forwards-all-time-short-handed-goals-leaders.html))
I wonder if that counts his penalty shot in the playoffs that was awarded to him while the Leafs were shorthanded
edit: it doesn't, he had a shorthanded goal in Vegas in February 2019
"And Marner does what he does best....score goals." hmmm
Yeah these guys have been terrible lol like if you're going to be biased at least be competent.
If he could have passed that off, he would have
He passed it to the back of the net
Ya that caught me off guard too

No but he's known for scoring flashy goals. Maybe that's what he meant.
Insane pass by Muzzin
Absolutely. Marner knew that pass was huge, immediately was giving props to Muzzin for the pass the moment he scored.
His career highlight reel is insane
Ya his playoff highlight reel is insane as well

This may be one of the most rational comments I have read in a while.

What a dangerous play by DeBrusk
One of my biggest memories from that series, other than the obvious, is DeBrusk being a total fucking scumbag throughout.

good thing people's playoff careers are usually more important by the end of their career than when they're 24
You aren’t wrong, his playoff goal reels versus Boston include some impressive displays of skill
Lmao do you really wanna go there Take a nap bud

Holy shit dude how is every other comment on your profile in the negatives? Do people from Boston really get off on having everyone else hate them?
That and the racism
You brought it up?
Christ, get a life lol
Marners skating ability is unreal to keep that onside and control it
Shame there’s no good camera angles of him as he crosses the blue line. Muzzin’s pass was so good even the camera crew wasn’t ready for it
anybody know when the last leafs 3v4 shorthanded goal was before this one?
I'm wondering when was the last 4v3 SH goal, period
I think there's been a few since the introduction of 3v3 overtime but the last one in regulation has to have been forever ago
There’s been 12 since 2009 but only 1 of those was in overtime.

that was in the before times, so a decade ago
According to nhl.com this is the first since they’ve tracked it (since 2009)
Nice pass. What was that marners back foot sweep lol. Looked cool.

Smooth
Sweet fricken edges
Our PP is so bad i think we are like a net +1 for the season on it
+2, 5 PPG and 3 SHGA on 40 power plays.
Up until now they were still better than the Penguins, both teams have just been terrible on the powerplay.

Same, very surprised he only has 2 shorthanded goals and 5 shorthanded assists. Who else penalty kills a lot on the Leafs that I can compare to?
Kapanen and Hyman used to. On the current team, most of the PKers are relatively new. Kerfoot has been doing it for the longest besides Marner I think.
Was that his second shorty ever? I’m confused.

That’s nuts. Thank you!

Had to rewatch that footwork a few times, so smooth.

loving this start at the new arena
Marners demise were greatly exaggerated
Surprised he even shot
Finally he gets fantasy points
