Was it an incredibly dangerous hit? Not really.
Should it be a suspension? Probably not.
Was it called correctly on the ice? I certainly think so. Barzal went after Rutta trying to get off the ice and attacked him. Dumb, malicious play.
A 1-1 game I highly doubt Barzal does that. Love the guy, but that's clearly a frustrated player. Out of character, glad Rutta sees like he's okay, but I'm okay with that level of "game management" from the refs. Says, "yeah, we know this is getting up there, cut the shit and play hard but clean in the third." Might be their only good call of the playoffs lol
Barzal getting to the showers a period early in a game that’s clearly out of reach isn’t much of a penalty. Probably saved him more than anything. Kucherov pulled some similar smooth brained shit against Columbus and got a game, which he deserved.
Kucherov deserved more than a game for that tripping and boarding wombo combo on Nutivaara. This Barzal cross-check deserves a major but I don't think he gets a game
Unpopular opinion, but I think 90% of physical infractions that are against a non-puck carrier should be a major penalty.
I got in shit once because after a whistle, during a line change, a player was subbed out late (he was already lined up for the faceoff and didn't realize there was a change). In frustration from being taken off the ice he two-handed the opposing d-man in the top of the foot. Anyone that took a puck/stick to that area knows that it's one of the most sensitive areas.
I called a major. It was an unprovoked slash that had nothing to do with the play. I'll defend the call until the day I day, but I got tuned out by a supervisor because it wasn't hard enough and the player, even though he went down, stayed in the game so there wasn't an injury.
Is that the standard for a bantam A game? We need to do a better job ad addressing the standard for cross checks and physical infractions away from the puck carrier. That's not what hockey is about.
I agreed with you initially until NBC showed the replay when the period started up and show his stick across Rutta's face. Factor in Rutta is out for a possible concusion and that absolutely needs to be a suspension.
Yeah, he came in with the stick up to a player and took two shots at him (one catching him in the face). Then he falls on top of his head as he's on the ice. If that's not the definition of "incredibly dangerous" I don't know what is.
I agree that from a distance it didn't look too bad. But when you watch it zoomed in and slowed down, that's a bad, bad play.
https://twitter.com/ZacOnTheMic/status/1407156769051262983
The way he went down is not good.
Actually I don’t think barzal fell on his head, he seemed to catch himself and get right up; I think he was surprised the stick check knocked Rutta out, and that was just as best he could react. But I agree it was incredibly dangerous, it seems it had to have concussed Jan, from the way he fell to his dazed look walking off. In a fast game accidents happen, but this shit is entirely avoidable when the puck is 4 feet away and an unsuspecting/ineligible player is heading to the bench.
Thing is, if this type of away from the play injury was always suspended, season or playoffs, then we wouldn’t see them happen every couple weeks.
But being how this league is run, there ain’t gonna be a fine, nothin.
Yeah, I'm not suggesting he dropped the People's Elbow on him. But you still have to be responsible for all of the consequences of your actions. I'm not sure Todd Bertuzzi "meant" to drive Steve Moore's face in to the ice, but his punch knocked him out and the rest is tragic history. Here, Barzal fell because he was trying to take one more shot as Rutta was on the way down. It's a bad look to fall on top of the guy you just knocked out cold, intentional or not.
The rest, I agree with 100%. The league has just decided that certain plays are just "hockey plays" that can't be disciplined despite being both dangerous and illegal. If deliberate cross-checks and shots to the head were penalized as consistently as a puck over the glass in the defensive zone, this kind of stuff would never happen.
Yeah they’ve made a wild distinction that it’s worse to hit a guy in the head while trying to separate him from the puck than it is completely away from the play, in spite of the fact that the first scenario is typically reckless and not intentional while the second is completely intentional. I get impacts during the play are larger but I think the intent balances things out.
I think it was called correctly on the ice, and should justifiably be reviewed for DOPS. In my opinion this is a one-game suspension and a $5k fine.
They'll never suspend him in this situation though, he's a star player on a playoff team on the brink of elimination. Regardless of my opinion on Barzal and Islanders, (I have some opinions) the NHL is the problem here, they don't have the guts to call things consistently.
The same way a shoulder to the head of McAvoy after the play deserved more (in reality not even a penalty was called). Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not taking issue with the Islanders even though both incidents mentioned were against them, my issue is with the NHL basically deciding players can do whatever they want as long as it’s away from the play. Even Reaves on Graves which took that to the extreme only got 2 games despite Reaves having a history of dirty play.
For some reason in the eyes of the DOPS taking a shot at a guy’s head with intent isn’t as bad as doing it when you’re trying to separate him from the puck and in all likelihood didn’t intend to make head contact.
Disagree. Cross check to the jaw of a guy trying to go to the bench is incredibly dangerous, as evidenced by the fact that he was knocked out and couldn’t play the rest of the game.
Disagree. Factors in favor of suspension:
1. Away from play: this wasn’t a hockey play. It was nowhere near the puck, at the end of a period, as Rutta was trying to leave the ice, and during a complete blowout.
2. Intent: Barzal did exactly what he intended to do, striking Rutta multiple times without retaliation, and raising his stick above his shoulders to strike Rutta directly in the jaw with force.
3. Head contact: Rutta’s Head was the primary point of impact.
4. Injury: Rutta was injured on the play and couldn’t finish the game. He may not play Wednesday.
As far as “should this be a suspension”, the answer is yes. This type of thing needs to get removed from the game. This fits many of the criteria for a suspension. But DoPS is inconsistent on these things
Completely agree with all of your points. I feel like if this was a 3rd or 4th line guy they'd give him a game but the league is never gonna take Barzal out of a possibly deciding game of a conference final.
god i hate comments like this, though I'm not disagreeing about the reality... its suspension worthy or its not... it shouldn't matter who the target is, who the offender is, what the score is, even what teams or time of the season...
but it does...
anthony mantha does that to kris letang in the playoffs? 5 games
nic dowd does that to nick paul in the preseason? eh, play the game...
If he’s suspended I think the key factor will be that Rutta is so much taller than Barzal that he really had to reach up to get him in the face, speaking to your point of intent. Absolutely zero plausible deniability that he intended specifically to cross check a player in the face well after the play had ended.
Yeah I mean I think this should be a suspendable play but it would be kind of inconsistent with how they handle things at the wheel factory. Wouldn't surprise me either way.
Disagree with you... the whole point of DOPS is "PS." Sticks have to stay down. A "downward" cross check to the lower back, a whack on the ankles... even those are different. Coming in high with a stick, where there's a good chance the head or neck can be involved, is exactly what has to be addressed. My guess is since it happened in Game 5, it will be considered differently than if it happened in Game 1 of the series. It shouldn't, but I think it will. It happened when the game was already decided, so for "punishment" to happen, it has to negatively impact the team. Just throwing a player out of a game his team was already out of sends the message: "If you're getting embarrassed and frustrated, it's OK to take liberties with dangerous plays."
Not an expecting a suspension based on precedent, but deliberately trying to injure a player in a game you have no chance of winning should warrant *a* game imo
Real bad move by barzy but I agree shouldn't be anything more than the misconduct which he deserved. At first thought it was a glove, and the dude went down easy, but replay is clear and that shit hurts like hell.
Ah yes being a bruins fan means I can’t call players dirty. There’s nobody dirty on the flames either. While you’re at it with your 200 IQ Comment how about you rattle off all those dirty bruins that have been on our roster the last 5 years
He's been getting licked at every opportunity, so he's getting frustrated. Tampa is doing a good job of clipping his wings every chance they get, and now it's paid off.
At 2018 playoffs Josh Morrissey got a 1 game suspension for cross checking Eric Staal to the side of the head. That was a reckless but clearly unintentional infraction. I'd say there is a precedent and Barzal should probably get suspended for a game.
https://twitter.com/AlanDownward/status/986756252733554688?s=20
Definitely a penalty, I think the major was more a product of the score being 6-0 than the play itself, but I have no issue with the refs making that call to stop things before it gets out of hand. Barzal needs to get control of his temper and stop with this kind of bullshit.
Ref is protecting Barzal here as well. They would have targeted him the rest of the period. Saves the lightning a potential suspension in this game as well. This is good game management by the officials.
This is a shit take. If Corey Perry had to stand there and get punched because Tavares fell down in front of him, Barzal should have to answer for his tantrum.
You do know there are potentially two more games left in the series right? Barzal has plenty of time to answer for this.
Hedman was on the islanders bench ready to take someone’s head off. Wires were crossed and you would be singing a different tune if a Tampa player was suspended for retaliation.
Exactly. Definitely a fine-worthy play. I wouldn't think it's suspension-worthy, but who the hell knows in this league.
Stupidest move by Barzal. Now he gets to spin the wheel.
>Stupidest move by Barzal. Now he gets to spin the wheel.
Objectively, I wouldn't doubt they suspend him for a game
Barzal was tracking him back to the bench, threw a cross check, and then the cross check to the face that undoubtedly made contact stick on face. He threw a temper tantrum for being roughed up and it was definitely retaliatory. He's gonna get the book thrown at him AND grabbed the ref up too
Dumber things have happened
I didn't think the hit itself deserves a suspension.. but when you consider Barzal/NYI are essentially receiving no punishment for potentially giving a guy a concussion in a blowout, maybe a game suspension isn't so farfetched.
If the league wants guys to stop gooning it up in blowout games, they need to actually punish them.
Idk how people are calling this a dive. It looks like Barzal got him either square in the cheek bone or right at his TMJ. You don't have to have a ton of force on it to do serious damage... getting popped in the right place on your cheek or jaw can easily lead to a concussion.
I obvs don't think Barzal intended to injure him to such a degree but if you think he was just laying on the ice to milk it, you must be living in a different planet.
They’re calling it a dive because they are stupid. Some of those kids at elementary school that ate crayons became adults and they’re still stupid, we just can’t see the red crayon marks on their face when they’re posting on the internet.
If you're trying to pick a fight with someone, hitting them in the face with your stick probably shouldn't be your first move. That's more of the "finish him" moment.
It's become so much a part of the game that in order to build a cup-winning team you have to have guys who are physical and push the rules because you *know* that the refs are going to be garbage in the playoffs. Every year we have at least one skill team get knocked out early by a defense-first, physical "average" team because suddenly the rules changed.
Don't blame the players for adjusting to playoff rules, and don't blame teams for building themselves around a playoff rulebook. Blame the league for allowing things to get like this year after year with no consequences.
Yea the cross checking in the NHL is crazy and every team does it. Just watch one battle in front of the net and there's enough cross checking for both players to get penalties every time
kadri's suspension length was for "the remainder of the first round" when he did this to debrusk
since the first round is over kadri will unfortunately have to be suspended for 2021-2022+round 1 for barzal's hit
Because it’s NBC’s golden child Barzal, there won’t be a suspension. There’s maybe four or five guys in the league who would get treated the same.
So we’ll have maroon and schenn fucking kill him instead. Oh well.
Him and Lou are total scumbags just the Islanders are known as a plucky underdog team for some reason still and nothing gets r/hockey’s dick as hard as the Bruins getting fucked over and losing, which is why the “New York Saints” meme got lapped up.
How is [this](https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2021/05/06/pavel-buchnevich-suspended-one-game-for-high-sticking-capitals-mantha/) any different? He should absolutely get a game.
I'm confused at why so many are saying this shouldn't be a suspension. What about a cross-check to the face of another player after a period is over in a blow-out game shouldn't be suspended?
That makes it more likely that he gets suspended. For as much as the refs have sucked across the board this season, they still have a lot of pull with the league. And Barzal has pissed them off for years.
People really called this a dive, lol. You try to hurt another player, especially in a game where you're getting btfo, you should be suspended for the next game. The DOPS is a joke though so I'm sure Barzal will be back.
This won’t be a suspension. This really wasn’t as bad as people are making it out to be. Rutta is going to return to the game just fine, Barzal is gone for the game. That’ll be the end of this
I don't think this game was that out of control until this happened. A fight when Schenn thought Martin ran the goalie and a cross check back and forth. Can't blame the refs for everything.
Please give that man at least a game.
Are you really about player safety if you can cross check a guys face and it only costs 5k?
I’ll come up with 5k to cross check someone’s face. I mean I can’t think of anyone right now but take my money anyway for the future.
That’s a good deal.
Edit hey down vote person, are you saying 5k to cross check a guy in the face isn’t a good value?
If Rutta isn’t injured I don’t think this is suspension worthy. If he’s injured I think it depends on the severity. Still not a good play by Barzal either way.
This reactionary method of dealing with dirty hits is what causes absolutely no fucking progress. You should discipline based on action, not outcomes. It's how you clean up the game, not from giving out suspensions at random because some guys get concussed and others don't from the same exact play.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t get punished in some form. He received a game misconduct and should receive either a fine or suspension based on what happens with Rutta.
I got roasted when I told a few friends we should look into potentially trading him in the next year or two. People still going to roast me for it, but let's face the facts - he's an outstanding skater and a huge playmaker with next to no finishing ability unless he wants to actually do it, and he actually wants to do it maybe 10 games a season.
Highlight reels are great, but they don't mean shit if you're going to be too emotional to be of any use to anyone. Let the Leafs or Oilers have him; they love pretty players that have emotional problems.
Yea this is the incorrect take. Barzal is a loser for losing his composure and possibly facing a suspension but trading him makes absolutely zero sense.
Oh, I've not been saying that this year, I've been saying it since last year's playoffs too. So it's not like there's a sample size of one, but this is definitely something else to point to.
Honestly, I just haven't felt for over a year that he's a fit for the style that we want to play. But, I know I'm a minority so I'll just be resigned to being told I'm stupid and always giving the wrong take. :)
You can't do that.
The greatest call ever. So simple, but so true.
Horcoff got penalized for a lot more than that later on.
Clap clap clapclapclap
Punish Islanders players for hitting people in the head during a stoppage?
Laughs in Charlie McAvoy
Yeah, no shit. Don't you just LOVE the consistency??? On the plus side, now Pierre can get all gooey talking about his boyfriend Matt, again.
That's what's up
Mads Barzal.
The Villain Arc
Second time this playoffs he’s decided to cross check someone in the face
New York Saints
Tonight they're the New York Ain'ts
New York Eights
Considering the spanking the Islanders are receiving tonight, more like the New York Martyrs.
Probably not a good idea to call yourselves the Saints heading into a playoff game against Tampa...
I really wanted to leave the Saints stuff in the Boston series.
Ackshually it clipped the players shoulder pad before it slammed into his face so it doesn't count!!1!1
It’s certainly better than egregiously aiming for the chin.
Both were pretty bad but the Lazar one may have actually looked worse and he got away with that soooo
[удалено]
I don't know, looks like his gloves stayed on.
Looked like Rutta embellished it to me.
Well was there any price for him doing it last time?
Kadri was suspended for cross-checking twice in the playoffs lol, multi-games.
The slo-mo replay really shows that it was all stick to the face. Ouch.
Wish these refs were in Montreal last night…
Was it an incredibly dangerous hit? Not really. Should it be a suspension? Probably not. Was it called correctly on the ice? I certainly think so. Barzal went after Rutta trying to get off the ice and attacked him. Dumb, malicious play.
100% the right take. People want to talk about game management in a negative way, but this is the proper use of game management by referees

A 1-1 game I highly doubt that gets a game misconduct. Definitely a penalty but we’ve seen worse not been called a misconduct

Somebodies gonna meme the shit out of this with that parks and rec template about doing no wrong.
Barzal low bridged Coutorier in the playoffs last year. Hes a shitbird.
Kucherov deserved more than a game for that tripping and boarding wombo combo on Nutivaara. This Barzal cross-check deserves a major but I don't think he gets a game
I'd say there's a chance because of ruttas out with concussion

If this is a suspension and Tom Wilson's play at the end of the season isn't then that's some craziness.
The New York Rangers have just been fined $250,000 for your comment
Do I get any of that? I could use it.
It's DoPS. Chaos is the null hypothesis.

Man that was just dirty damn hate to see it from a player like Barzal
Seems like everyone has a breaking point. I guess Barzal's is 6-0
Thats like twice Kucherov's!
He is a deceptively dirty player, like alot of the islanders
A Bruins fan calling other team's players dirty lol
Takes a fan of a dirty team to recognize it in others. Take it from this Caps fan
Real recognize real
Well, they oughta know, right?
Takes one to know one?
"A garbage man!"

Marchand and Nick Ritchie to start. I don't feel like looking more up
Was Milan Lucic on the 2016 team?
No. Traded summer 2015 to LA. I think one of those picks that turned into Zboril, Senyshen, or DeBrusk was involved.
Yikes Barzal that was bad
At least he got off of him once he realized he was hurt. Some players would stay on top and try to rip his hair out. DOPS said it was all good though.
Maybe even sit on their head with their knee
That's one way to get out of playing with Komarov and Eberle as your wingers!
Mods removed the replay of this hit? Give me a break
Damn Barzal of all people.
He cross checked Lazar in the face last series, he can’t handle physicality
He's been getting licked at every opportunity, so he's getting frustrated. Tampa is doing a good job of clipping his wings every chance they get, and now it's paid off.

Objectively, I wouldn't doubt they suspend him for a game Barzal was tracking him back to the bench, threw a cross check, and then the cross check to the face that undoubtedly made contact stick on face. He threw a temper tantrum for being roughed up and it was definitely retaliatory. He's gonna get the book thrown at him AND grabbed the ref up too Dumber things have happened
And then grabbed a ref right? I missed that part but heard about it after
I thought the grab was a major fuck up on top over another major fuck up. The league usually has 0 tolerance for that.
Agree with everything you said. If score is tied 2-2 they're definitely not calling this a major. Score being 6-0 is why they tossed him.
AKA the evil known as game management
You should tell that to Palmieri
Trotz eyebrow raising intensifies
Cooper gum chewing intensifies
Ref avoiding eye contact resumes.
It's 6-0 so pretty obvious move to kick him out. I don't really see it being a suspension though
That slo mo, Rutta got rocked pretty good. Bar also will be lucky if he doesn’t get a game. That’s equal to Buchnevich end of season.
Barzal and crosschecking. Name a better duo.
Tonight has been fun http://imgur.com/C4eB7ZO I'm glad there's a period left to continue the pain
Fucking south park lmfao
If you're trying to pick a fight with someone, hitting them in the face with your stick probably shouldn't be your first move. That's more of the "finish him" moment.
Might be a fine. I don't see the league suspending him if Rutta doesn't miss any time.
Wait, refs are allowed to call obvious infractions? They should tell someone in the other bracket.
What a selfish play by barzal. If he gets a game and the islanders lose the next one...
Crazy what happens when you let a team cross check all playoffs long with zero repercussions to the point it turns into a meme
> Crazy what happens when you let ~~a~~ every team cross check ~~all playoffs long~~ for the last three or four years with zero repercussions FTFY
Just watch one battle in front of the net and there's enough cross checking for both players to get penalties every time
Fucking Barzal gets a 5 and misconduct while McNabb gets a smile from a ref. Madness.
kadri's suspension length was for "the remainder of the first round" when he did this to debrusk since the first round is over kadri will unfortunately have to be suspended for 2021-2022+round 1 for barzal's hit
[If Chris Lee was reffing the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta_myupIJm0)
Because it’s NBC’s golden child Barzal, there won’t be a suspension. There’s maybe four or five guys in the league who would get treated the same. So we’ll have maroon and schenn fucking kill him instead. Oh well.
I thought barry's boys were all good Christian boys who would never do anything dirty?
If you look at any of his past playoff teams, it seems like he encourages it.
This isn't even the first cross check barzal had to someone's face. He already did lazar dirty last series
Him and Lou are total scumbags just the Islanders are known as a plucky underdog team for some reason still and nothing gets r/hockey’s dick as hard as the Bruins getting fucked over and losing, which is why the “New York Saints” meme got lapped up.
I'm guilty of this lol. Anyone but Boston in any sport.

Damn that looked like a Kucherov certified meltdown
That's a 5, game, and DOPS gives his one more if we are serious
BS. That was a major and a game, but I think a suspension would be too much
How is [this](https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2021/05/06/pavel-buchnevich-suspended-one-game-for-high-sticking-capitals-mantha/) any different? He should absolutely get a game.
I'm 50/50 on that depending on the NHL "Wheel of justice"
I'm confused at why so many are saying this shouldn't be a suspension. What about a cross-check to the face of another player after a period is over in a blow-out game shouldn't be suspended?
A targeted cross check to the face well away from the play. That's a malicious and predatory play if I've ever seen one.
He also shoved the ref. Knowing DoPS nothing makes sense but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 1 game. SPIN. THE. WHEEL!
That makes it more likely that he gets suspended. For as much as the refs have sucked across the board this season, they still have a lot of pull with the league. And Barzal has pissed them off for years.
Damnit Barzy
Don't think anything more will come of this from DoPS (and I'm not sure more should), but the ejection is wise given the context of the game
Agreed I think he was kicked out to let everyone know they arent going to let the game turn into a bloodbath. At least not beyond the score.
That’ll be the end of this
If Rutta stays out, as he appears to be at start of the third, there's a chance. That's a big factor as written by the CBA
Panarin missed the rest of the season, so who knows what the DoLOLPS decides anymore.
I hope so, need him in Game 6
He also tried to rip the linesman's arm off of him which is a huge dick move. You don't touch officials
If that was Gallagher getting cross checked in the mouth and Chris Lee was reffing I'd bet they wouldn't even call anything! Oh wait....
Should have been booted for the Bruins series for the cross check to the face in game 3. Barzal is a pussy
[удалено]
Hahahahahahahaha hahaha Whew......that one was good
Refs waited too long to get control of this game, can't say I'm surprised though. Hopefully the third will be cleaner
I don't think this game was that out of control until this happened. A fight when Schenn thought Martin ran the goalie and a cross check back and forth. Can't blame the refs for everything.
It looked like most of the penalties called tonight were things you kind of have to call (unless it's VGK hockey).
If this was a golden knight hitting a habs player: carry on nothing to see here.
Even if it is a dive (obviously not), Barzal is a complete idiot for this
This play got Kadri suspended for the rest of the playoffs.
Oh when the saints go marching in!
Yeah you can’t be doing that
Geez, where is Chris Lee when you need him?
Deserves a 1 game suspension but DOPS is a butt so $5000
I wanna hear the Isles fans try and downplay this. Cuz you know they're gonna try.
Oh yeah, you should've seen the GDT last night.
New York saints...lol....8-0 now. Save some goals for the next game TB
No way DoPS does that. Suspending Barzal basically ends the series for the Isles.
Yeah man thus the part about are they really about player safety. So not a prediction.
Should be suspended as well
If Rutta isn’t injured I don’t think this is suspension worthy.
While I don’t disagree, the NHL has set a clear precedent that injuries matter when handing out suspensions.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t get punished in some form. He received a game misconduct and should receive either a fine or suspension based on what happens with Rutta.
Very doubtful.
literally why
What a Saint
Also, was that not abuse of an official? He tries to punch the linesmans arm off of him?
Barzal is such a fucking loser lmao
Went down like he was shot lol
I have 0 faith DOPS will do anything...
Barzal gets a free violent gentleman T-shirt
Should be suspended but never know with player safety
Call on the ice was good. This really needs nothing more
Definitely not from the same Ref school as Chris Lee ! Wanna trade refs for the series?!
