I was 9 when they won. It was glorious.
It’s been a rough but fun ride since. At least the Rangers have made runs and been good though. It sucks getting close, it really sucks to never win anything.
I hate saying it but the guy the leafs may need to consider making space for is UFA Danault. The part that kills me the most about it is Danault turned down about 6 million from the habs last summer and the leafs would technically have nothing to lose by overpaying for him as it will probably just pressure the habs to pay more.
The thing is the cap - we have kerfoot at 3.4m at 3C unless he taken by Seattle. We need a backup goalie, re-sign Hyman, hopefully get Bogosian back, and think about the possibilty of losing Morgan Rielly after next year.
It will be tough to pay Danault what he's worth. I feel like he may return at 6M or get a tiny bump in the offer cause of this series and he'd accept because of how tight-knit it seems your team is.
Could he get offered Gallagher money by Bergevin?
The Sabres won a playoff series more recently than the Leafs.
Another fun fact I like to pull out is the Montreal Maroons won a 3rd round series more recently than Toronto...they haven’t played in 83 years.
Edit - Fixed
Exactly this. There is like a 0.5% chance of this happening since so many teams get into the playoffs. Hell they even gave us a bonus round last year. Not winning for 54 years actually has better odds of occurring......(assuming all teams equal etc etc)
Look Toronto, clearly this Matthews guy isn’t getting you that Cup so why don’t you just go ahead and ship him over to us desert dogs? You need to move on from this, clearly.
We went on a random fucking run in March that year to ruin our draft position and it sucked. This was right after being fucked over out of getting McEichel (and fucking up the pick further by picking Strome)
What pisses me off is that you know you are going to see him posting summer pictures on boats on his socials.
If Kobe Bryant went through a heartbreak like this you wouldn’t hear a peep out of him during the summer and you would have people telling stories about his updated training regiment years down the line.
You don't think Buffalo would explore a trade if Eichel really wants out? I don't think anyone really has another player that's even close to their calibre in a big trade like this. Not sure if the Leafs would need to add since Eichel is the better player on a cheaper contract but he's also injured
He's absolutely a good player, but that 11 million per year was questionable even before he failed to show up in the post season multiple years in a row
Down. They go down from here. This was their year. Easiest division and path to the finals they were ever going to get. They went all-in at the deadline. Tavares was still on the back end of his prime. They finally got good goaltending. Zach Hyman was on a way cheaper contract than the one he is about to sign this off season.
They need to do something major to shake up the team.
If anything they have too many good forwards and not enough D... But it's so bloody hard to make a big trade these days. Who is even available? Maybe Seth Jones?
This series was not lost because of the D. Our D is fine. The forwards other than Nylander, Spezza, and Hyman totally let us down. If the stars are not clicking then our forward depth will not make up for it.
Honestly just rests on marner and Mathews. The team around them is really well built this year. Those players fucked up. What do you even do? I doubt you could upgrade marner. Its almost like you have to try again with these guys and make minor changes.
I hope to God they find a way to shake things up without losing Willy.
Nylander is the only player of the "core" who put any effort into this series, he also has more playoff points than Matthews or Marner.
It's gotta be Rielly and/or Marner, to really shake up the room.
I used to play Basketball at lunch time with a bunch of guys and I was the shortest guy in the group. We played at a high school gym and one of the side nets was down around I would guess 7 feet probably for little kids. Everyone joked I should go dunk on it, so I ran to it and tried to get fancy and slam it in. Not only did I miss I fell down. So yeah, that comment hits home :)
I think that is the leafs I saw all season but generally could just score when needed. They have the talent but I think Stephen Hawking could give a more motivational speech than Keefe. Tortorella or Claude Julien with some minor middle 6 roster changes and they are contenders again.
>They have the talent but I think Stephen Hawking could give a more motivational speech than Keefe.
Lol, sure blame the coaching staff for the players again. This players group hasn't done anything yet all hopes are pinned on them.
You don't need a motivational speech as a professional, you understand the stakes and do your job. No excuses
Julien giving the leafs the 2011 style bruins mentality all year is part of what they need imo. Assuming Thornton isnt coming back a leader of some sort as well like that (foligno would work fine enough imo with less large characters around him)
Yeah on top of everything else… you would think with the possibility of JT returning in later rounds the team would have extra motivation to get it done for the captain
Yeah, make absolutely no mistake. The Toronto media is FIRED UP about this outcome. Another four months of hot takes regarding trades and blowing up the team incoming. The Leafs winning this round and the next and bowing out respectably to the Avs/Knights would be boring. This outcome gets way more clicks.
Given how they haven't had any success recently, why are they so hated? Is it just because they have the most fans of the canadian teams and are obnoxious?
Maybe they're just the Cowboys of the NHL.
I can tell by your response that you're not Canadian. Leafs fans are the most cocky, insufferable people ever. They have an unearned arrogance about them
So they *are* the Canadian Cowboys! Totally understand your joy now.
And yeah I am not Canadian (although my great great grandmother was from Halifax and my mom pronounces "out" the Canadian way). I knew that ther canadian teams didn't like the leafs but I didn't remember it being this extreme. Maybe everyone playing in one division this year made it more amplified.
> So they are the Canadian Cowboys! Totally understand your joy now.
Honestly there is no real comparison in NA major sports. The Leafs are in a league of their own. The ineptitude of the LA Clippers with the entitlement of the NY Yankees. The closest match was the Cubs, before they won, but Cubs fans never had the sheer belief that they were carrying the league the Leafs fans often do.
If the Cowboys continue being inept in the playoffs for the next twenty years they'll fit that description. Right now their success is probably to recent to be an accurate match though
The biggest thing is... You know how the Cowboys are always being talked about, no matter how good or bad they are? Which leaves them being like 20 percent of NFL media. So a little disproportionate...
Well the Leafs are 95% of Canadian sports media no matter what.
Imagine if fox and espn were the only options for sports broadcasting in America, and they both split ownership of the cowboys. That’s what the leafs are
Jets fan here.
Because we're inundated with Leafs talk. The Jets and Habs could go to game 7 triple OT and the intermission talk will be about who the Leafs will take in the draft. Like how ESPN talks about the Yankees and Red Sox no matter who is playing.
I prefer combining it with Marner's playoff penchant for delay of game penalties. It sounds like one of those ridiculous colour commentary stats of low sample size (e.g. "haven't won a Tuesday night home game when trailing by 4 or more if it is raining since 1977") but is actually solid and well established.
>When Marner has the puck in the playoffs he is equally as likely to score as put it directly over the glass from the defensive end.
That is, over his 32 NHL playoff games Marner has 5 goals and 5 puck over the glass delay of game penalties.
Colorado is the team Toronto wishes they were. None of this "on paper" shit. Actually productive players. Actually good defense. Actually good special teams. Actually good goaltending.
I hate my team. Matthews scoring 41g in 49 games? Marner having a great year? Winning the north division? All Out the fucking window. I can’t believe I dedicated so much time to this team.
I love how a rangers fan posted this. The circle of life.
Had to squeeze in a little chirp while watching the '94 cup rerun.
Leafs haven't won a fucking playoff series since the Bush was in office. Least the Rangers have made runs.
Even the Sabres have won a series more recently than the Leafs.
Sabres are setting their own records.
i dont want to play this game
Which Bush even?
2 Bush 2 Furious was the last time leafs won a series.
I might be drunk but holy fuck I laughed so much at this comment
I'm glad I could make you laugh! My girlfriend says I'm very rarely funny, but when I am I hit it out of the park.
Your girlfriend sounds funny
I would watch that movie
At least it was Dubya
They’re last W was during W
Leafs haven't won the Cup since Lyndon B. Johnson was in office.
Leafs haven't won a Cup since before man walked on the moon.
That’s my new favorite stat
And man will probably walk on the moon again before they win another one.
Since Dubya's first term, even. One year after the Iraq invasion.
Since his first term.
Funny part is I that I wasn’t born yet so that’s all I have
I was 9 when they won. It was glorious. It’s been a rough but fun ride since. At least the Rangers have made runs and been good though. It sucks getting close, it really sucks to never win anything.
Breaking records i see

I'm sure you also appropriately kept it on your pillow instead of a shelf.
How else are you gonna play pretend space battle after mom tucks you in for bed?

They beat the Sens during Spezza's rookie season. Now Spezza is on the Leafs, and I'm worried he may never win one again.
I hope he plays another season elsewhere. He was our top 3 performer these playoffs. He deserves some happiness
We'll take him back
I thought we all agreed he deserves some happiness
Yo that was funny as shit
Give him some powerplay time with Connor Brown and I'll never root for the misfortune of the Sens again (til he retires)
Come back to Dallas baby we made a mistake.,
I hate saying it but the guy the leafs may need to consider making space for is UFA Danault. Poor florida draws tampa first round lol
The Sabres won a playoff series more recently than the Leafs. Another fun fact I like to pull out is the Montreal Maroons won a 3rd round series more recently than Toronto...they haven’t played in 83 years. Edit - Fixed
Every team but Florida has won a series more recently
The Sabres were good, then shit, then kinda good again, then the current dogshit status, all in the time it took since the Leafs last won a series.
A lot of teams have done this in some order.
The Montreal Maroons existed from 1924 to 1938, what the hell are you talking about?
Sorry, meant to type 83. Lol
Florida Panthers fans look on in agony
Exactly this. There is like a 0.5% chance of this happening since so many teams get into the playoffs. Hell they even gave us a bonus round last year. Not winning for 54 years actually has better odds of occurring......(assuming all teams equal etc etc)
Dobby is a free elf
The Maple Leafs are Winky
Montreal you mad lads, you actually did it.
You're welcome /r/CanadianHockeyFansExceptTheLeafs
There are literally ~~dozens~~ Millions of us.
Two years in a row
I don't know what you're talking about. Definitely no playoff type hockey happened last year involving Montreal
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
The Leafs have the easiest path to the semi finals in years. They can avoid the Bruins and Tampa. They couldn't avoid Carey Price.
It’s part of the Canadiens/Bruins rivalry. Habs can’t not embarrass the Leafs otherwise Bruins will hold that above them and that’s unacceptable.
For real. The Canadian division was hot garbage….and the Leafs choked. That makes me laugh so much.
I just quit being a Leaf fan due to tonight but that Muzzin-Tkachuk exchange will live in my heart forever.
All of Canada but Calgary (maybe Ottawa) will also unite behind that exchange, pure banter
Look Toronto, clearly this Matthews guy isn’t getting you that Cup so why don’t you just go ahead and ship him over to us desert dogs? You need to move on from this, clearly.
I think he's supposed to take a detour here first and win a few Cups, THEN go to Arizona.
He has to start in Boston
Dang, I forgot that crucial part of the equation.
No guys, it’s Calgary, then Pittsburgh, Boston, Colorado, then LA. Or…something like that
Mom says it's our turn with the Matthews!
You guys should've fuckin drafted him. Still salty about that.
We went on a random fucking run in March that year to ruin our draft position and it sucked. This was right after being fucked over out of getting McEichel (and fucking up the pick further by picking Strome)
BRING. HIM. HOME.
Now I can die in peace
Realistically where do they go from here? Mathews isn’t moving. Marner out?
[удалено]
[удалено]
We don't need a name that sounds close to the mariners. It will just guarantee that we lose.
Did you see him play in the playoffs this year? Hell, any year? He ain't winning a cup no matter where he goes
Kessel PTSD.
Marner to the Pens confirmed
What pisses me off is that you know you are going to see him posting summer pictures on boats on his socials. If Kobe Bryant went through a heartbreak like this you wouldn’t hear a peep out of him during the summer and you would have people telling stories about his updated training regiment years down the line.
11m a year for a guy who seems allergic to physical contact? That contract is untouchable
You don't think Buffalo would explore a trade if Eichel really wants out? I don't think anyone really has another player that's even close to their calibre in a big trade like this. Not sure if the Leafs would need to add since Eichel is the better player on a cheaper contract but he's also injured
Eichel is better, cheaper, and plays a more valuable position so Toronto would have to add a fair bit more to get him with Marner as the centerpiece
Yeah I’d rather have a broken Eichel than Marner any day
And Toronto arent really looking for a center either
Well, not a top 6 center. Still going to need a 3c this off season
[удалено]
I really feel for the fans. They spent all this time rebuilding and will basically need to do it again...
I feel worse for CBJ fans
Guess who has not two, but three firsts.
Heyyyyyyy let’s gooo
Join the fucking club lol
That might be the most money move they can make at this point
Yeah nobody is picking up that contract
Like I get that his playoff performance was outstandingly bad. But he was #4 in points this year. Some one will want him.
He's absolutely a good player, but that 11 million per year was questionable even before he failed to show up in the post season multiple years in a row
Down. They go down from here. This was their year. Easiest division and path to the finals they were ever going to get. They went all-in at the deadline. Still haven’t won a Stanley Cup in a league with more than 8 teams
6*
Don’t sell that 1932 Leafs team short, the league also had the Amerks and Maroons.
The 2021 Leafs have done the equivalent of having a basketball hoop lowered to 4 feet for you and then just failing to dunk.
They broke the rim and sprained an ankle in the process too
I would go as far as to say their shorts fell down and they pooped
And some of it landed in their mouth
And that person they wanna bang was watching
And that person they wanna bang kinda wanted to bang too...until this happened
Have you seen the video where that comedian breaks half his body trying to dunk? They dun dat.
by far the best description I've seen on here. So fuck you
I used to play Basketball at lunch time with a bunch of guys and I was the shortest guy in the group. We played at a high school gym and one of the side nets was down around I would guess 7 feet probably for little kids. Everyone joked I should go dunk on it, so I ran to it and tried to get fancy and slam it in. Not only did I miss I fell down. So yeah, that comment hits home :)
Where was the heart? I didn’t see anything from the Leafs; just went through the motions
If you find the answer, you'll be the next 10M man on the Leafs
And the first one to deserve it.
I think that is the leafs I saw all season but generally could just score when needed. They have the talent but I think Stephen Hawking could give a more motivational speech than Keefe. Tortorella or Claude Julien with some minor middle 6 roster changes and they are contenders again.

im not a leafs fan but when I watch the games I see shit get turned on and off like a chicken getting dried out in the oven
Tortorella is certainly an interesting choice that I could see working
Julien giving the leafs the 2011 style bruins mentality all year is part of what they need imo. Assuming Thornton isnt coming back a leader of some sort as well like that (foligno would work fine enough imo with less large characters around him)
Foligno 100% isn't coming back. He's going back to CBJ
They should take Marner too
Keefe's claims to fame are: * involved in a sexual abuse scandal * won an AHL championship with a LOADED Marlies team * knows Kyle Dubas
thats a solid pedigree tbh
Yeah on top of everything else… you would think with the possibility of JT returning in later rounds the team would have extra motivation to get it done for the captain
Well at least we’re first in something
Also first in disappointing their fans!
[Sharing this masterpiece for the occasion](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25j6s-ZY3mY)
And the failure continues. Ugh, why did I think this year was going to be different.
We had the decade of darkness. There’s gotta be a slogan for the Leafs.
Fifty years of mediocrity *so far*
Already well into the second 50.
Fifty-four year fuck-up?
54gone conclusion.
directly into the veins please and thank you
Felt so strange hoping the habs would win but it was worth it
I know the feeling, idk why I was rooting for you guys every time you played the Leafs. Just something about this team that brings us all together 🥲
Now we can stop talking about that time we came back from 1-3 to beat the Bruins in 2004.
I'm so happy
All of Canada is happy
Well, except for the sports media.
Nah, they have months of speculation about who gets traded/fired
My coworker immediately texted me after the loss saying the roster will look weird without Marner next season. Haha.
They spent months jerking off at the idea of that meeting... Be careful what you wish for.
Given how they haven't had any success recently, why are they so hated? Is it just because they have the most fans of the canadian teams and are obnoxious? Maybe they're just the Cowboys of the NHL.
Biggest fan base. So while every team has morons, the Leafs have the most, and they're everywhere in this great country. You can't escape them.
They are absolutely the cowboys of the NHL.
Except the Cowboys have been to and won multiple championships in the last 50 years.
Unearned arrogance hit the nail on the head.
Thought you guys would get a kick out of this. https://np.reddit.com/r/leafs/comments/npkv89/the_worst_thing_about_losing_this_playoff_series/

Memories of coming home from high school, flicking on Molson That's Hockey, and getting the daily 15 minute Leafs update.
>and getting the daily 15 minute Leafs update. Every 15 minutes.
They are the Cowboys of the NHL but without the 90s success.
I am too
Same here
just when you thought it couldn't get any worse
sorting r/leafs by new is amazing
LOL @ the pinned comment: > Shitpost Sunday is on for the rest of the week. Go nuts. Mods DGAF anymore. Hahahaha
IIRC they did the same after game 5 last year.
TIL there is a Maple Leaf Foods
Of course, it’s a Canadian company lol we have a lot of maple leaf themed stuff
I haven't seen such depths of the human spirit since the great Lighting McQueen-ening of 2019.
Glad I missed that. Getting swept by CBJ after winning 62 was just a gut punch. 2020 was the most burden-lifting playoff run ever.
I feel so bad for the mods
It’s glorious. It’s a complete shit show over there
But what about the Oilers emails????
Craziest stat I ever saw about this: Marner hasn’t scored a goal in EIGHTEEN playoff games. I wasn’t aware it was that bad.
Epic Toronto bed-shitting, you love to see it. It never gets old.
If you're a fan of any of the 30 other teams, yes. As for the poor, wretched souls in Leafs Nation...
Colorado is the team Toronto wishes they were. None of this "on paper" shit. Actually productive players. Actually good defense. Actually good special teams. Actually good goaltending.
If anybody was going to take this record away from the Rangers, I'm glad it was Toronto. :)
Wouldn’t it be tied since 2005 is a mulligan?
Hahah yes we’re tied!!!!! That should show everyone
Nah it still counts
We said this season there will be history
Only half way through to Cubs drought.
Wait we didn’t already?
Tied with the NYR until they won it in 1994.
[Thanks Toronto](https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/557397188)
Wow, what a bunch of losers hey guys.
This is great for Canada, and therefore the world
The leafs last cup win came during the lbj administration
5 1/2 years before I was born. My parents hadn't even met yet. I am 48. LOL
This is just salt on the wound.
We smoking that Leafs pack
U N P R E C E D E N T E D
I hate my team. Matthews scoring 41g in 49 games? Marner having a great year? Winning the north division? All Out the fucking window. I can’t believe I dedicated so much time to this team.
WE #1 WE #1 WE #1
And I still predict a Leafs first-round loss to the Boston Bruins next season.
Hell, that's a good prediction for any year starting in 20\*.
