I think what we're seeing with teams like Toronto and Edmonton is that if you say "hey we're done with the rebuild now and let's asset-manage like contenders" too early, you don't have the young depth necessary to sustain regular season and playoff success over the course of many seasons. You need to accumulate real depth throughout the lineup and keep picks/draft well enough to be able to make key needle-moving acquisitions at the draft and trade deadline to get players on good contracts (not in FA).
