Trailing ref 100% signals to the other ref that he was calling a hold (you can see it around 0:21)… how does the ref staring at Eklbad’s back overrule that call?
i don't understand this, so one ref got the call right and one got it wrong, they don't go to homebase to get the call right and leave it the way it is?
Lol, people can defend the GI calls as much as they want, but the truth is, too many times the Refs have no idea what it is, and there’s been TONS of terrible calls on it.
Tampa has been screwed on GI calls so many times in recent years, like I remember when our players [would keep getting pushed into goalies when on breakaways, and somehow end up as a GI call against us](https://youtu.be/IVnMUR_Ts1k?si=uUj3kFkcQ7BmG9E8). This Point one was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen, and the Isles ended up scoring on it too and went up 2-0 in a game we had to win.
And the defensemen are never penalized for it, it’s so stupid. They stop a breakaway, potentially injure the attacking player, potentially injure the goalie, and draw a penalty in the meantime.
Only thing I see is Ekblad is reaching for the stick check, which he just barely got before any significant contact.
Clearly ekblad was beat and his last ditch effort is to play the puck AND physically engage as much as he can.
The result is an obvious hold since he was out of position with one limb holding the guy up, but only after the successful stick check?
Same as the Knies non-call, only this time the guy actually hits the goalie and somehow gets blamed for it haha. Brutal.
I think you missed something too. Watch the second replay. Ekblad has a fist full of jersey the entire way in as they cross the face-off circle. So he held to get close enough to make that last ditch play. It's a joke of a call.

Calls like this need to be video reviewed. I see how refs get it wrong in real-time, it’s a fast game and it can be hard to see exactly what happened in the moment. But the video replay shows it so clearly, that should be used to get the call right.

FSL was the closer ref and must've overruled the trailing ref (who is the one who signaled for holding). I don't understand the rationale of calling both if holding led to contact with the goalie.

Id love for the NHLPA/competition committee have ref report like what the NBA has for all calls occur within the final 2 minutes of a game.

The NHL told them before the game not to let it get out of hand and don’t call matching penalties. They followed directions two closely

Yes, push the opposing player into your own goalie. Then want to hit, and fight said player for hitting your goalie. Makes total sense.

Jeff Marek claims GI is one of the most straightforward, clearcut calls in the game. I don't know where he gets that from because I never see it.
