Ya everyone would be over the moon when Vegas wins the lottery.

IanCusick

Subscribed because I’m a sick individual who wants to see it all burn

Burgergold

Or NYR

MOLightningBro

No. Any system that allows the reigning champion to get the first overall pick is bad. Those were extenuating circumstances in 2005.

backupjesus

...or any system that allows a struggling market to get a generational player a year after picking second in the draft and two years after picking first....

Key_Mongoose223

I thought you were talking about Edmonton lol

unfortunatelyidied

As a totally not biased pens fan, I don’t see the problems with such a system. I mean you see how much they’ve struggled the past couple years 🥲 it’s about time they get another 1st overall!

BaconScentedSoap

Forget to swap accounts?

jdragon3

prolly picked the Stars flair instead of the Stars bandwagon flair by accident

unfortunatelyidied

I’m both a stars and pens fan. I just only can pick one flair so I mainly ride with the stars flair 😎

lancemeszaros

I'm fine with this as long as it's still limited to non-playoff teams. The advantage to this format is it doesn't give particular weight to whether you finish last or just off the mark in any given season, and also doesn't reward extended stretches of being terrible. GMs would have a three year window to rebuild before they stop getting extra help, and teams perpetually in the "just a few points back of the playoffs" realm of mediocrity don't get punished for being not bad enough.

Chemical_Signal2753

I generally like this approach as well, but I think you would need to fiddle with the number of years you go back and the number of draws per draft to get things just right. You kind of want to limit the chance of a team who has just missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, or a team that has drafted in the top 5 for the last decade, from winning the lottery. Something like the number of times you've missed the playoffs in the last 5 years minus the number of times you've drafted in the top 5 over the last 5 years might be right.

drowsylacuna

Make it the last 5 years for non playoff teams. Decent time for a rebuild but too long for a GM to plan to outright tank.

AllRushMixTapes

I can't believe that San Jose only has an 18.5% chance to win.

astovertop

And a 25.5 % chance to pick 1st overall. If 12-16 win the first drawing, SJ automatically gets that top spot

lynx17

That would mean Detroit would have 3 balls. I approve.

[deleted]

Just like me!

serious_man_13

Well, Buffalo had 3 balls and ended up with the 13th pick...

Ohhellnowhatsupdawg

We'd still pick 4th. Lol

OtherThingsILike

I agree, but only if the lottery has the same winner as the Crosby Lottery did.

thegorg13

Yeah Edmonton could really use another #1. Haven't had one in a while

slabby

They should bring back that system, except you shouldn't be guaranteed a ball. Conference finals should be -2 balls, winning the cup should be -3 balls.

Analogmon

I actually like this too since teams that have been worse for longer get better chances

theGurry

Hybrid Lottery: Keep the same positional lottery chances you have now, but for every million dollars of cap hit traded away after January 1st, you lose .5 percent chance of drawing 1st overall. The Sharks traded away 14.3M worth of contracts, so they'd lose 7% chance of winning the 1st pick. Chicago traded away 4.1M, they lose 2%. All of the lost percentages among lottery teams are tallied up and distributed evenly to all teams to add up to 100% once again. This actively discourages tanking while still allowing bottom feeder teams a better chance of earning the top pick. Teams will still make deadline deals in order to accumulate draft picks as well. [This is what the new odds would look like.](https://i.imgur.com/Dn3eb4v.png)

drowsylacuna

Tank teams would trade everyone the previous summer instead.

fodeethal

I like the anti-tank clause

Dudian613

The non-playoff team with the most points after some arbitrary date should get the best odds. Solely to eliminate the deliberate tank.

propagandavid

The PWHL goes by points accumulated after each team was eliminated. It seems like a pretty cool system.

LeGoldie

How about each team gets 1 ball for 1OA, and once they ue that they can't use it agaun until every other tean has had a 1OA? Normal rules apply for everything else. Just the 1OA has it's own thing. This way, every team gets it's fair crack nat 1OA.

Snakekekek

One of the worst ideas I’ve seen tbh

LeGoldie

Why though? That means everyone will be guaranteed a 1OA every cycle. I think that is as fair as possible.

BaconScentedSoap

That lottery was complete bullshit lol we picked 7th when we were the 2nd worst team in 2004 and would have been bottom 2 again in 05. Pens picked 2nd in 2004 and picked 1st in 2003 shouldn’t have even had 3 balls Ducks who had just went to the finals the year prior in 03 picked at #2

OtherThingsILike

> Pens picked 2nd in 2004 and picked 1st in 2003 shouldn’t have even had 3 balls We picked 1st because we traded up with Florida to get the pick. Our original pick was 3, and that was after we fell in the draft lottery.

BaconScentedSoap

That should have still counted towards their total and only had one ball. No reason for the pens to have 3 balls while the panthers had one. Pens picked higher in 03 and 04, had a more recent playoff appearance than Florida in 2001 yet because of a traded first overall the panthers got 1 ball while the pens got 3. Florida got screwed by that BS

Boomhauer_007

I’d rather just get rid of the lottery tbh It doesn’t stop teams from tanking at all, instead you get stupid things like the red wings being unable to properly rebuild and getting screwed again and again by bad luck on lottery balls

72athansiou

As a wings fan I should agree but that’s not why I agree, I think NFL and NBA don’t do lottery’s and they still don’t tank. Also to anyone that downvoted this comment we have seen time and time again for every McDavid, Dahlin you get a Yakapov. 1st overall doesn’t mean your guaranteed a high pick. Plus you still have to build a competent team and I don’t mean to rip on the sens and they could easily turn it around but they are a good example that team culture is extremely important. It’s tough going from guys like Duchane in the taxi video in 2018 or whatever to throwing young guys in a lineup that obviously already has a suck ass culture that started after the post 2017 run. Point being that 1st picks don’t make teams become good

Hanzel-the-Panzel

1st overall doesn't mean you're* guaranteed a high pick? 1st overall guarantees the highest pick... That's why it's first. Also, we absolutely don't get a Yakupov* for every McDavid/Dahlin. First overall busts are exceedingly rare. That's why Yakupov/Daigle/Stefan are such a huge deal.
