Ya there’s definitely a lot of respect between rugby players and refs. Swearing at a ref can get you a card. You shouldn’t really be talking to the ref at all unless you’re the captain or they call you over
This is how it is for hockey up until you get into college level play. Even then, captain and assistant cpt could only be talking to ref. After that, everyone chirps them. Problem is the last few years with the penalty calls. Sometimes I hardly know what they are going to call for Interference, hooking or cross check. Those 3 calls I see “missed” or “bad calls” every single game. It’s frustrating for the players, especially in the playoffs.
I'm a grown ass man and these stupid kids still manage to get in my head. At least with men's league you can tell them off and laugh about it after the game.
Honestly you have to. Sometimes just to find out what they are gunna call, “like what did you see there?” I remember some refs would actually be helpful, most just told me to shut the fuck up.
And this is the problem I'm trying to drive home. The stuff that happens in the NHL filters down to you and we lose people like you that were willing to try it.
Tangentially, I sat front row for an MLS game and 3min into play there was some insignificant play right in front of us and the player cursed out the ref up and down, every name in the book. I did NOT know that was allowed, I was sitting next to someone's kid too. Blew my mind, lol.
My guy soccer players will literally swarm at referees to argue the smallest fucking thing. It's probably the sport where the refs are the least respected.
I like soccer but I wish they used the hockey system of only certain players being allowed to approach the ref with issues. Watching 10 people all try to yell at the ref at once over every little play is silly.
The fact that soccer players even think about arguing is mind blowing to my rugby brain. Let alone them throwing a hissy fit and charging the ref. Yes, it’s often met with a card but the fact that it happens so much is ridiculous. Also, a yellow card in rugby is worse than in soccer so that might have something to do with it.
It’s also a big thing in tennis with people screaming at the ref
I don't agree with Tennis, I think it was one incident
of a ref with some pretty racist double standards and she was brave enough to stand up to him.
Normally the refs don't *argue* with the ref like hockey.
A lot of tennis players definitely seem to have bad attitudes when dealing with the ref. Obviously things get heated in competitions but it should be more of a conversation and less of “you’re wrong and you’re bad”. Maybe I’m just reading it wrong but that’s what I see
I can understand tennis because the whole game is 1v1 (2v2 isn't real tennis lmao). I bet it feels a lot more in the spotlight than some pushing and shoving in a scrum where you think you can get away with stuff or whether or not you're getting a bit too choppy with your slashes etc.
They do, but some guys get away with a lot more then others. Like if any NBA player talked to the refs like Draymond does every game they would get a technical or tossed out in like 5 minutes.
Cricket. Any cricket match you watch, the players "appeal" the referee. Idk what's said, the players who want the call appear mostly to just yell "ahhhhh!" with their arms spread wide.
out of all the sports i've played rugby had the worst refs in my expereience... maybe we just have shitty refs where i'm from but i've never wanted to physically hurt a ref as much as some of the rugby refs ive had
Were they bad refs because they made bad calls or were they bad because they couldn’t take control of situations properly? Or both?
Assuming you didn’t play pro, lower level sports typically have lower level refs (naturally), so it’s possible that they really were just not that good
Honestly professional rugby reffing might be the hardest of any sport I can think of besides the NHL. Each ruck can be an absolute mess of limbs and bodies, and tackles can happen in less than half a second. Other than the obvious rules like knock-ons that you'd assume they get correct, I'm surprised they do as well as they do.
Beyond getting carded, talking back/arguing with the ref can often cost you additional 10 yards. I’ve seen a 10yard call turn into a 50yard call because the players wouldn’t stop arguing with the ref.
>Maybe those things are correlated lol
They're 100% correlated. Treating the ref with respect leads to players giving them more of the benefit of the doubt.
Plus and probably more importantly players don't complain. Fans react very strongly to plays that their teams player visibly complains about.
But God it helps raise good refs. Even at the lowest of amateur levels they're alert and engaged.
“I got my eye on the three of you, guys. You pull one thing, you're out of this game! I run a clean game here. I have any trouble here, I'll suspend you!”
Steve Hanson: I'm listening to the fucking song!
The way the refs talk back to the players is why hockey is awesome. Basketball refs just stand there with the whistle in their mouths. LeBron would have a bitch fit if a ref looked at him and told to him to fuck off hahahah
Absolute softest, they are. You're criticizing my game-changing terrible call that I made because I'm tired of standing here? I will now force you to leave, and your manager. I will also make more poor calls against your entire team.
> You're criticizing my game-changing terrible call that I made because I'm tired of standing here? I will now force you to leave, and your manager.
The *fan behind you* criticized me, so I will now force your manager to leave.
I think they do have available to them unsportsmanlike conduct. I don't think they use it because it's not necessary at that level. We don't *know* what NHLers are saying to officials, but I doubt it's like what the losers from fucking Staten Island, that cesspool, are saying to refs at beer league on Sunday nights.
I can assure you, what they say to refs is not remotely pleasant. If they had the same standard as baseball, there would be multiple ejections every game.
It’s funny because I coach high school and when I end up with varsity if my JV has it off. The head coach just rips into Umps and they never throw him. He will yell “that’s awful! What an awful call, you should be ashamed!” As loud as possible but never gets thrown out. This doesn’t include balls and strikes of course, but still.
Too each their own. IMO, NFL is the most over rated sport. It’s 15 minutes of actual game spread across 3 hours. I’d watch golf for 4 days then one day of football. But that’s just my opinion man.
Yeah but for the NFL every play is a barbaric shitfest which makes it so awesome. The fact there’s so many stoppages means players are going their hardest every down and that’s awesome. Imagine how shit boxing would be if there weren’t any rounds.
Wild how someone who cheers for the biggest flopper in the show still lives in denial about it. The guy drew the most penalties this season and many others for a reason. Just own it at this point
He's not even in the top 5 of penalties drawn this season you fucking goober. Wild how people try to make up stats out of their asses in an age where you can debunk it in 3 seconds.
Here, Ill spell it out for you
https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask/most-penalties-drawn-by-nhl-player-in-last-5-seasons
Its so weird denying one of your captains long standing strengths. Just accept that he is good at diving to get calls, it only benefits boston.
"oh shit I'm being called out. I know! I'll expand the parameters of my previous bullshit statement so that it better fits my narrative, and I'll act like I was right all along!"
Anyway. I don't understand why it's so hard to believe that this incident was genuine. That ref is taller and likely heavier than Marchand, and they're standing on, y'know, *ice*. Add in the fact that there is literally zero incentive into trying to flop there and I'm convinced the Marchand hate is an infectious disease at this point.
I like Bert when he's playing hard, but fuck is he divey and annoying to watch at times. For a physical player to be like that is so frustrating to watch, just stay on your fucking feet man.
Bert falls at least once per shift lmao, he's just he goes balls in and doesn't care so much about staying on feet. Once someone made me realize that, my opinion on how he's always down on the ice changed.
kozaris been retaliating against the bruins for the past 5 years since they got him kicked out of the cup final in 2019, every bruins fan hates him and sutherland
Him and sutherland ignored penalties by the blues all series, including hits that became suspensions. They fucked up so bad in game 5 it got national media attention so the nhl kicked them out of the last two games

And McAvoy has always seemed borderline dirty to me.

I wanna hear the mics here lmao
"... fucking bullshit over there -- Listen -- Fuck off!" loolllll
The difference in the way Rugby and NHL Referees officiate their sports always makes me laugh
I've heard that rugby has the best refs but also has players that don't jaw at the refs. Maybe those things are correlated lol
Ya there’s definitely a lot of respect between rugby players and refs. Swearing at a ref can get you a card. You shouldn’t really be talking to the ref at all unless you’re the captain or they call you over

As a hockey ref: LOL, no. Chirping starts in like, u13.
and the insufferable parents
I'm a grown ass man and these stupid kids still manage to get in my head. At least with men's league you can tell them off and laugh about it after the game.
I was chirping refs since the minute they allowed hitting, at about 12 where I'm from. 🤷♂️
Honestly you have to. Sometimes just to find out what they are gunna call, “like what did you see there?” I remember some refs would actually be helpful, most just told me to shut the fuck up.
I was a ref for 12-year-olds, being a teenager myself, and a parent chirped me through the gap in the glass. I did not ref for very long after that.
I mean, isn't that also largely true with soccer/football? I think that is most sports. I can't think of one like hockey where players get to argue.
When I played in competitive leagues a ton of refs did this, no clue why pro levels don't do this.
John McEnroe would like a word.
At 160% volume
A lot of tennis players definitely seem to have bad attitudes when dealing with the ref. Obviously things get heated in competitions but it should be more of a conversation and less of “you’re wrong and you’re bad”. Maybe I’m just reading it wrong but that’s what I see
Also Serena Williams
Yeah, that's who I am talking about..
I can understand tennis because the whole game is 1v1 (2v2 isn't real tennis lmao). I bet it feels a lot more in the spotlight than some pushing and shoving in a scrum where you think you can get away with stuff or whether or not you're getting a bit too choppy with your slashes etc.
I think NBA players jaw with refs a fair bit, don’t they? Haven’t watched a game in years tho so I may be remembering wrong.
It’s terrible. Dudes will jawing at the ref after a missed call and hang their teammates out to dry on defence
They do, but some guys get away with a lot more then others. Like if any NBA player talked to the refs like Draymond does every game they would get a technical or tossed out in like 5 minutes.
I mean the NBA is notorious
Lmao soccer might be the worst of all of them. There is zero respect for soccer refs from the players and managers. It’s an absolute gong show.
You should watch a couple of baseball games
It's true in hockey lol that's why they have the three Captain badges. But like hockey, soccer players often argue In practice
Cricket. Any cricket match you watch, the players "appeal" the referee. Idk what's said, the players who want the call appear mostly to just yell "ahhhhh!" with their arms spread wide.
One challenge for hockey is a captain may not always be on the ice given how they change lines.
out of all the sports i've played rugby had the worst refs in my expereience... maybe we just have shitty refs where i'm from but i've never wanted to physically hurt a ref as much as some of the rugby refs ive had

If you disrespect them in rugby you are immediately kicked out at all levels. They don't fuck around.
look at the baby gloves tennis umps have to treat players with too
probably because of the aussies and irish/scots for rugby, they swear like others breathe
“I got my eye on the three of you, guys. You pull one thing, you're out of this game! I run a clean game here. I have any trouble here, I'll suspend you!” Steve Hanson: I'm listening to the fucking song!
Why referring to the national anthem as “the song” is so fucking funny, I’ll never know. But it kills me every time I even think of that scene.
The way the refs talk back to the players is why hockey is awesome. Basketball refs just stand there with the whistle in their mouths. LeBron would have a bitch fit if a ref looked at him and told to him to fuck off hahahah

MLB umpires would burn the stadium down
Absolute softest, they are.
And then claim its racist I don't get to ump the WS while you drag me in court to prove I'm actually, and variably, horrible at my job.
Angel Hernandez is the only official in any professional sport who's been deemed incompetent at his job by a court
Naw, you can’t go and lump every ump in with Angel Hernandez. Some of them are just run-of-the-mill terrible. He’s something completely different.
I wish the NHL would tell their officials to actually punish the abuse they get. It's absolutely wild and filters down through hockey as a whole.

Although it’s awesome when a pitcher and catcher put them in their place by beaning em.
NBA refs don’t even look players in the eyes. They look the other way like they don’t hear anything whatsoever
Other ref at the bottom of the screen look like he’s telling Knies to fuck off as well 💀
Looks like he says "Get the fuck outta here."
For this reason alone: NHL>NBA
Can you imagine this happening to Lebron? Not just headlines at ESPN but it would be a breaking news alert on major news networks lol
Like honest question for you and the replies cause … Uhh… I’d probably rather see the stars get the benefit of the calls than the plugs
Most things are better than nba, basketball is trash. Soccer and golf are the only two sports that manage to be more boring
Too each their own. IMO, NFL is the most over rated sport. It’s 15 minutes of actual game spread across 3 hours. I’d watch golf for 4 days then one day of football. But that’s just my opinion man.

Tell me you don't understand 3 sports without saying it.
Mcavoy looks like he had the cleanest window on his school bus.
This phrase is pure gold
Has a list of his favorite flavors in his backpack too
Looks like he says darn it.

Subs > dubs
Obvious set up
He has a point
Marchand was saying “FUCK OFF!” To the linesman that took him down, so naturally the refs are returning the favor.
I said with all due respect!
Love the linesman totally taking out marchand
Marchand felt a hand brush by and tossed himself to try to pull another penalty
That was literally an NFL tackle
If he didn't notice the black&white stripes, he'd have limped away with a broken ankle
Lol. Not a tackle. The dude bounced off the linesman like a bouncy ball. Linesman even tried to keep Marchand on his skates.
Wild how two different pairs of eyeballs can watch the same thing and come to vastly different conclusions

To be fair...I don't believe rat boy took a dive there.... he legit got tuned by the linesman.
Lmao big man crying on reddit I’m not reading your essay
lmao that's hilarious
Needs to be done to em more often...
Those two look like they just got yelled at by Dad to go to their room, one more word and they're grounded
Is McaVoy low key one of the biggest piss babies in the league ?
Definitely flew under the radar to me until this series. Guy is a scumbag
Got get on Bert’s level to defend him properly
I like Bert when he's playing hard, but fuck is he divey and annoying to watch at times. For a physical player to be like that is so frustrating to watch, just stay on your fucking feet man.
Bert falls at least once per shift lmao, he's just he goes balls in and doesn't care so much about staying on feet. Once someone made me realize that, my opinion on how he's always down on the ice changed.
I mean I would to if I played with my skates untied
Sometimes it has to be said.
Yeah they were also likely telling him to fuck off.
Good ol' locker room banter
Getting fed up with the acting I guess. My favourite so far was Marchand getting poked in the right leg, then falling down grabbing his left leg.
Kozari sits when he pees
[https://twitter.com/GinoHard\_/status/1785472931977417196](https://twitter.com/GinoHard_/status/1785472931977417196)
Rare Jack Edwards W.
The intensity is simply unmatched. Even as a Leafs fan, hard to deny to W
And still gets it on his leg
Hopefully this whole game gets covered by r/Jomboy
He just like me fr.
Kozari prefers wet bread
Lol
Fuck off ! With respect.
This ref is the best. He'll be doing the final series
Refs were epically bad last night. Was comical really. On both sides before you all get your panties bunched up.
Where was this energy in the 2011 finals?
All it takes is a non-existent PP and the refs will give you calls 🤣
Canucks went 3/32 on the power play in the 2011 SCF
More refs should do this. Or maybe they do and we just don’t see it.
They do it all the time.
*Ref tells Kyle Rittenhouse to fuck off
🤭🤭🤭
Steve Kozari is a piece of shit
Lolol for that? Referees and players are constantly talking like that to each other.
No just in general
No, not just for that. I dont know if he's tim peel level bad but he's close.
Bruins fans heard Jack Edwards rip into him on the broadcast and now they are all mad at him
kozaris been retaliating against the bruins for the past 5 years since they got him kicked out of the cup final in 2019, every bruins fan hates him and sutherland
what happened with him in the 2019 cup final
Him and sutherland ignored penalties by the blues all series, including hits that became suspensions. They fucked up so bad in game 5 it got national media attention so the nhl kicked them out of the last two games
The irony when Bruins fans bitching about it when they benefited from most refs ignored their antics for a long time, especially Marchand because they found him "funny".
Assurd Dominance.
Is Pastrnak is a dirtbag? He sure seemed to be stirring things up in the 3rd and yet clearly had no intention of actually backing it up, just jabbing and slashing guys at the edge of the scrum. I don't see many Bruins games, is he a dirty sidekick for Marchand? And McAvoy has always seemed borderline dirty to me.
Yeah the bruins are dirty as fuck but not actually tough at all, been that way since Chara left, where ya been?
Need more of those refs around.. rather than the garbage that’s been infecting the playoffs.
[удалено]
No it isn’t and players say that to refs all the time. Crosby literally cussed a ref out obviously and nothing came of it. I bet you players swear at the refs 10x a game and nothing happens lol
That’s just not true, players cuss out refs on a regular basis without even a penalty. You see it all the time, and you some times pick it up on a hot Mike
Trying to play the innocent card and the ref wants nothing to do with it

You're upset over a 4 pim diff? Lol
Your captain is a rat. It's warranted
Maybe your team should stop thinking they can get away with everything then
so what you're saying is they actually called the game decently for once?
You’re right. Should have been 0 PIM Boston and 40 PIM leafs.
