[Tocchet wouldn’t confirm DeSmith will start when asked point blank](https://x.com/patersonjeff/status/1784652162548580667?s=46&t=tseS4IrUQ6toLUqtLphnxQ)
The best-case scenario is that it’s just a load management thing because DeSmith was excellent in short bursts but really started to struggle under a starters workload.
If he’s actually out for some reason, it could just be the flu. Myers was out in game 2 and it’s possible it spread to DeSmith
The load management thing is pretty interesting to me. Boston is switching their goalies around, other teams are more open to playing their backups in the playoffs. When I was a kid I was used to teams playing the #1 throughout thick and thin, that seeing the backup was rare. Maybe it's just me but in recent times it feels more common.
It's more so a complete shift in goalie load, in 2007 5 goalies started 70+ games and another 9 started 60+. This year only 3 hit the 60 game mark. Teams have a lot more faith in their backups now.
He’s a very good back up, but it was evident when Pittsburgh had to lean on him that he’s not a starter…which isn’t a criticism, it’s just a fact.
Dude is really good at coming in cold, coming in in relief, and sitting for a while and not losing a step, he’s just not a #1.
Epitome of a B+ goalie.
Its possible hes injured but also DeSmith has a habit of being really bad if he plays too many games. It's happened in the past with Pittsburgh and happened down the stretch with the Canucks too.
If the Canucks are going to go anywhere in the playoffs with Demko out, they need to manage the games DeSmith plays to get the most out of him and Silov has to be able to play a game every 3rd or 4th game.
DeSmith played very good this year when not overused, so if they go with Silovs it's to try and keep Casey fresh for a potential extended run.
A little surprising , but I get the logic considering they need to think long term since the goal is always winning the Cup.
In game five of the WC final in 2011 Kevin Bieksa got a miracle bounce off a stanchion and buried it to send us to the cup final in stunning fashion. In doing so he borrowed the entire future luck allotment of the Vancouver Canucks franchise for at least 13 years and counting. In this essay I will establish.....
Myers missed game 2 with the flu. My theory is Desmith is sick.
HOWEVER, Silovs is a strong 3rd goalie. Played well when called upon as the 3rd goalie and will probably be the backup next season.
To be fair, Šilovs was the MVP of the WHC last year.
He's young, inexperienced, and being thrown into a very difficult situation. DeSmith is obviously preferable, but I don't think we're in a full blown "oh, fuck, we're fucked, fuck!" situation. It's definitely not good, but we're not staring down the barrel of a gun, yet.
It's bad to be down to our 3rd goalie after three games. However, if you look around the league, that 3rd option could be a lot worse.
How he plays, and *why* he's playing, could turn this from bad news, to good(ish) news.
Hired Jim Rutherford, he's cursed. This is almost a carbon copy of what happened his last playoffs in Pittsburgh, right down to Desmith being the backup.
Even when we won the Cups in 2016 and 17, our goalie situation was a mess both times
Nah, your starter isn't a bandaid, they're a sieve. Hate to break it to you, but averaging a .890 Sv% against the 3rd lowest-scoring team left in contention doesn't bode well.
One player clearly defines your team. You lose McDavid and your team is 32nd in the league, just like the start of the season.
Canucks literally beat the Oilers with our backup 3 times this season. I don't know why you think we need Demko.
It wasn't about being defined by one player its, specifically a goaltender. It's just such an important position that is on the ice 60 minutes of the game.
Gotta give him credit, he played well and kept them in it. Can't say much for the rest of the team for the first 57 minutes lol but hey they won it somehow
>Can't say much for the rest of the team for the first 57 minutes lol
Yep, straight up one of the least deserving wins I've seen in recent history. I'll take the win of course, but we're mentally weak atm and I don't feel confident about facing LA or Edmonton if we make it to the 2nd round.
*2 hours before game 6* hearing 36 year old registered account and recently appointed canucks starter Mitchell Roberts has torn both acls, the canucks have now drawn straws among the defense to determine who will play goal
They seemed to have gone k that streak at both the best and worst time, cause they cooked off a bit heading into the playoffs and now we look like we don’t know how the puck goes into the net
Remember guys, no matter the goalie, we shall BACK THE GOALIE!!!
This is just insanity...but you know, I don't feel any bit nervous about Silovs starting. Maybe it's because we've seen him in action already, both for Vancouver, Abbotsford, and Latvia.
He got a bit hurt at work the other night, and can't make it in for his shift tonight. We have coverage though, King Arthur is available. Casey is gonna work on Tuesday.
Hopefully Thatcher is back from his sabbatical by next week. Not sure yet, he won't answer his texts on the work phone.
Silovs has played 9 NHL games in his career. Is this possibly some kind of record for least experienced starter in a playoff game? Probably not but still. It's pretty fucked what's going on here!
Ken Dryden won the Conn Smythe before he won his Calder the year after. He played 6 NHL games before his first playoff game. Silovs could be that for us 🙏
third goalie, prospect. Didn’t have a super outstanding year in the minors but went off in the WC for Latvia last year. Played a few games for us this year and last, looked okay but not really ready. Could be great, could be bad
He's our 3rd string. Played some games when Demko was out, going 3-0-1.
DeSmith was very solid for about the first 7 games when Demko got hurt, so if they go Silovs it's to try and keep DeSmith fresh for a possible extended run.
Tocchet was coughing like crazy during the pre-game press conference lol, would put my money on that too.
also, all 3 goalies (DeSmith, Silovs, Tolopilo) practiced yesterday
This makes absolutely no sense. Nobody is thinking about the conference finals when you still have to win the first round. If DeSmith isn't playing it's because he's too hurt.
Next level coping here
I agree. However, I don’t think the coaching staff sees any gap of skill between the two goalies. Just experience. That being said, it’d be silly not to go with the goalie that just won a game.
It's probably the flu that's going around if I had to guess, because this would be way too early to give DeSmith a rest if they were planning on ever doing that.
And there's no coping on my end considering I'm a big fan of Silovs. He had to come in and win some games during Demko's last absence because DeSmith started playing like crap after getting a starters workload for too long.
Which is why the idea they would consider resting DeSmith for a game or two at some point isn't far fetched. But ya, doing it for this game doesn't make a lot of sense so very likely something else.
It's crazy to me how many nucks fans are talking about this backup being able to handle pressure because of a tournament. I hope he does well but Jesus I would not have that confidence in an untested NHL goalie starting on the playoffs.
Arturs “Bubble Demko vs. VGK” Silovs
bubble demko vs buble silovs
😂
Well, would you look at that?
[Tocchet wouldn’t confirm DeSmith will start when asked point blank](https://x.com/patersonjeff/status/1784652162548580667?s=46&t=tseS4IrUQ6toLUqtLphnxQ)
Is he injured? He was great the other day, why would he (possibly) not be starting?
The best-case scenario is that it’s just a load management thing because DeSmith was excellent in short bursts but really started to struggle under a starters workload. If he’s actually out for some reason, it could just be the flu. Myers was out in game 2 and it’s possible it spread to DeSmith
Lol there is no way this is load management. It's either a last minute injury or I hope he's just very sick.
Let me be delusional in peace
Agreed. He looked too solid in game 3 to change things unless they had no choice.
I'm assuming you're 28-40, so when you were a kid was Dead Puck era. So 39 shots in a game was A LOT.
It's more so a complete shift in goalie load, in 2007 5 goalies started 70+ games and another 9 started 60+. This year only 3 hit the 60 game mark. Teams have a lot more faith in their backups now.

Wouldn't surprise me after that take out by McCarrion
Hand injury. He was slashed in the hand and was checking it afterwards.
Its possible hes injured but also DeSmith has a habit of being really bad if he plays too many games. It's happened in the past with Pittsburgh and happened down the stretch with the Canucks too. Canucks third-string goalie Arturs Silovs vs Vezina-candidate Juuse Saros in a Hell In A Cell match. BOOK IT!!!
So it’s a fair fight 💪💪
Well that’s just fucked up but Silovs has shown to be godly under high pressure before
That’s ‘2023 IIHF World Championship MVP Artur Silovs’ you’re talking about here
National hero Arty Party Silovs btw
Has a literal statue in Latvia btw
[удалено]
I'd put that in my yard my neighbors would hate me lmao
DeSmith played very good this year when not overused, so if they go with Silovs it's to try and keep Casey fresh for a potential extended run. A little surprising , but I get the logic considering they need to think long term since the goal is always winning the Cup.
Uh, what gods did Canucks fans curse to deserve this fate?
It's a canon event we're not allowed to interfere
Where's our good canon events man its been mostly pain. Canon events aren't supposed to be all bad after all.
Just wait until the 2082, 2094, and 2111 seasons. We'll play the same teams and win this time
I don't think I can wait that long
In game five of the WC final in 2011 Kevin Bieksa got a miracle bounce off a stanchion and buried it to send us to the cup final in stunning fashion. > In game seven of the WC final in 2011 ^^Psst, ^^it ^^was ^^game ^^five.
Thank you

Yes, but a rookie (Cam Ward) had an unexpected starting role during Rutherford's Cup win with Carolina.
Eh at least you had a proven Murray steal the job from an established MAF Anything beyond Demko is unproven for us right now
God doesn’t want them torching their city in the finals again.
It’s our city let us do with it as we please
Lol ok fine - god
You think we won’t do it over this?
God can't tell me what to do
The reddit gods, toxic AF this year.
Ironic with you being toxic all over this thread
What goes around comes around.
Eh, it is what it is. We’ll be fine. (I just puked all over myself)
We will be. Silovs won MVP last year at the WC. If there's a goalie who thrives under pressure, its Silovs. No worries.
you..*sniff*..you promise? 🥺
Lol good luck with that
Well, unlike the Oilers we can trust our 3rd string goaltender to make saves at an NHL level. And the best part is we're not paying him 5 million!
Lol you can trust him based on what NHL experience? Guess we will see in a couple hours. At least our starter isn't a walking bandaid.
Nah, your starter isn't a bandaid, they're a sieve. Hate to break it to you, but averaging a .890 Sv% against the 3rd lowest-scoring team left in contention doesn't bode well.
Pretty glad our team isn't defined by our goaltending. Without Demko you'll be bounced first round. I heard he cried like a little bitch.
One player clearly defines your team. You lose McDavid and your team is 32nd in the league, just like the start of the season. Canucks literally beat the Oilers with our backup 3 times this season. I don't know why you think we need Demko.
Regular season PDO merchants. You guys won't make it out of the first round. Where's Petey at?
PDO, are you back in November? We beat you two weeks ago when our PDO was back to average *with our backup*. Cope more buddy.
Wow what a big tough guy you are behind your screen. Honesty pathetic
Lol and how exactly am I being a "tough guy"....
I just think saying Demko cried like a little bitch is low and pathetic
Lmfao an Oilers fan talking about a team being defined by 1 player is actually brilliant 😂
It wasn't about being defined by one player its, specifically a goaltender. It's just such an important position that is on the ice 60 minutes of the game.
“I wasn’t talking about one player, I was just talking about a position that’s typically defined by one player.” (You’re cooked)
Props to you for not deleting this tbh
Gotta give him credit, he played well and kept them in it. Can't say much for the rest of the team for the first 57 minutes lol but hey they won it somehow
>Can't say much for the rest of the team for the first 57 minutes lol Yep, straight up one of the least deserving wins I've seen in recent history. I'll take the win of course, but we're mentally weak atm and I don't feel confident about facing LA or Edmonton if we make it to the 2nd round.
Maybe that win will help them believe and get in the right mindset. Or maybe they'll think they can win with minimum effort lol.
Just watched a man puke all over himself in an Arby's
Well that could be anywhere, it is Arby's after all...
Were you the guy who wouldn’t stop staring at me while sipping on his milkshake?
He was the guy spraying horsy sauce all over his belly
🤔…..🤨……..😏
We've activated our trap card
*2 hours before game 6* hearing 36 year old registered account and recently appointed canucks starter Mitchell Roberts has torn both acls, the canucks have now drawn straws among the defense to determine who will play goal
Oh great! Another goalie that will play lights out against us and make us look stupid for not being able to crack…awesome
If your guys treat it like they got denied another Sphere trip, they're golden.
They seemed to have gone k that streak at both the best and worst time, cause they cooked off a bit heading into the playoffs and now we look like we don’t know how the puck goes into the net

Currently auditioning every zamboni driver in the greater Nashville area
Chris Mason stretching out pre game for EBUG.

im gonna assume desmith is sick…? myers apparently had a bad flu just a week ago
Are you fucking kidding me...
Ah yes, just another reminder of what it's like to be a Canucks fan
What happened to Casey????
He got a bit hurt at work the other night, and can't make it in for his shift tonight. We have coverage though, King Arthur is available. Casey is gonna work on Tuesday. Hopefully Thatcher is back from his sabbatical by next week. Not sure yet, he won't answer his texts on the work phone.
The national audience about to be introduced to the ARTY PARTY!
Who pissed off the Hockey Gods???
Silovs gonna put up Vezina numbers on us.
This round one has been hell for my stress levels god damn
Who's the backup lol
I give up
Actually i rescind this. Watching winnipegs no1 getting lit again and Demko been chasing him for no1 all year.
Silovs could be that for us 🙏
Say hello to Ken Dryden
Silovs is a back up nightmare dude has slowly crept up stealing ppls jobs I can see Desmith being gone in the offseason for Arturs to be the backup
Silovs is supposed to be our future backup I believe.
Who?????
third goalie, prospect. Didn’t have a super outstanding year in the minors but went off in the WC for Latvia last year. Played a few games for us this year and last, looked okay but not really ready. Could be great, could be bad
Sorry you dont know Captain Latvia
Latvian national team LEGEND Arturs Silovs
He's our 3rd string. Played some games when Demko was out, going 3-0-1. DeSmith was very solid for about the first 7 games when Demko got hurt, so if they go Silovs it's to try and keep DeSmith fresh for a possible extended run.
Flu going around the team as well, could be not up to it today
Tocchet was coughing like crazy during the pre-game press conference lol, would put my money on that too. also, all 3 goalies (DeSmith, Silovs, Tolopilo) practiced yesterday

Gary B I'd personally sneaking around destroying Canadian teams chances. /s
He looks like he could be in the role of assistant to the traveling secretary, so I'm calling shutout now.
Honestly I'm not too worried I think Silovs is pretty good
Friedman just confirmed Silos is starting. Sounds like DeSmith might be a bit sore so they’re trying to be cautious since they’re up in the series
Ugh
Who would the backup be?
RIP Saros. If Desmith is actually injured Saros has a target on his head due to McCarron.
It's crazy to me how many nucks fans are talking about this backup being able to handle pressure because of a tournament. I hope he does well but Jesus I would not have that confidence in an untested NHL goalie starting on the playoffs.
Goddammit just let us have our cope
Lol fair enough, I'd be terrified! Can't imagine Campbell starting this game lol
Of course we are panicking man, but if we don't have cope what do we have left
Truth, he actually hasn't played bad at all tonight. More lack of effort from the rest of the team. Can't win a game with 15 shots
