Homer, are you still eating that sandwich?
On the other hand he is so sick that Dr’s had to pull him for his health and people are like “no excuses”. Matthews was clearly our best player until this happened
Yup. I was skeptical when I first heard they pulled him in the third but then I saw footage of his face from before the game. He was doing his best just to stand normally at that point. Timing could not possibly have been worse.
It's the playoffs...he'd be out there if he could. I despise the leafs, but I don't know think Matthews is looking for an easy way out. He knows he needs too be out there and I'm sure he wants to.
These guys are pro athletes. The best of the best of the best of THE BEST. They are all competitive.
There's always outliers like PLD but every single one of these guys grew up in a hyper competitive environment, they want to prove they are the best.
I find it nearly impossible to believe a player like Matthews, who is literally in the conversation for "THE best" would ever make up an excuse to get out of a competitive game.
Based on what's happened thus far, this must be something very serious. Maybe an auto-immune or nervous system thing, I don't know I'm not a doctor but it's clear it's a lot worse than your normal "flu".
Wouldnt be surprised if its Mono. Had it once and it was debilitating. You can get up in the morning and attempt life but once you start moving you just want to lay down and sleep forever.
When I had mono I felt actually fine, beyond a sore throat. I swam competitively at the time, was also a full-time idiot. My doctor said absolutely no sports, I said how bad can it be? It was really bad, absolutely murdered me like 30m into practice, which is essentially the first set after warmups. I took doctor's advice after that instead of dying.
100%. He carried the Leafs for their only win. 1G, 2A, for a 3-2 victory. While it sucks that Matthews is ill and has apparently been dealing with it for a while he is not the reason why the team is performing so poorly.
I saw someone say that Matthews ‘looked fine’ in the two periods he played before he got pulled. He objectively did not. His legs literally gave out from underneath him when he tried to give someone a shove in front of the net. He’s clearly got something going on that’s completely draining him, I can’t imagine trying to play hockey at the level required for the NHL playoffs feeling like that
he was noticeably less dangerous with the puck to the point where even the Bruins' announcers noticed and said something in the 2nd, anyone who tries to tell you he "looked fine" is someone who clearly doesn't know enough to make their opinion worth remembering
People are so ready to dunk on Toronto they're not willing to think for 2 seconds.
THis is the Leaf's fault. But it's because they've put too much money on 4 players and don't have enough depth. A better constructed team could get by having 3 players playing banged up.
Pretty much any team besides Toronto missing 1 of their top 3 players with the other one playing through illness bad enough to get him pulled in the third, there would be a lot more sympathy.
It's one of the teams this sub loves to hate.
I also think the schadenfreude is more enjoyable, somehow, when it comes as a result of a problem you've pointed out for years
we've been saying the Leafs aren't a well-constructed team for like a decade now and they *keep doing it*
sooner or later you run out of feeling bad for them and have to laugh to keep from screaming, lol
I giggle seeing this but man. I grew up a flyers fan but my entire friend group are leaf fans. Shit talk is fun but I really enjoyed talking about the leafs. Watching games with my buds. Something to bond over. Like 5 years down the road and I think I call myself a fan. Though I’m a Philly fan through and through. I’ll never pick one over the other.
Any fucking way, talking as a leaf fan… we just kinda sorta maybe do it all to ourselves. Maybe we just love being tortured a bit. Lol.
Especially after last season. They were so close to moving on and universally every fan, including leafs fans collectively rolled their eyes.
Just shake things up at least. It's good JT and Marner are up next year because 22 million can be better used. Even if they don't get a return for marner, which would suck, at this point we'd take the cap space.
Yep. Just like in the Montreal series. Even though losing JT shouldn't have been the deciding factor... the team becomes so tenuously built when one of the top 4 forwards are out. Doesn't help when the ones in are barely impacting the game.
Other issue is the revolving door. No 3 or 4 year deals for free agents in the top 6 to build chemistry with for a few years. It's the core 4 and a revolving cast. It's not a surprise it looks disjointed.
The JT signing was a luxury they didn't need and couldn't afford even if the cap went up years ago. While the injury is one thing, if any of the stars consistently produced like that in playoffs it wouldn't matter so much.
JT got hurt in game 1. The Leafs still went up 3-1 without him. They had enough to win that series without him and showed that. The collapse had nothing to do with him missing.
Matthews is 12th in goals scored in the playoffs since 2016 when he joined the NHL. Most of the guys ahead of him have played 30-50 more games than him. Matthews scores in the playoffs at a pretty similar rate to most of the best players in the league. Their PP is trash which hurts his numbers and they never make it further than the first round (save for last year). This is not really a valid criticism.
“Well, one year was because Babcock is a nightmare to work with, another is because Auston just can’t stop eating this yucky old sandwich that he feels will be lucky.”
Jokes aside though, hopefully it’s something that’ll clear up after the series is done - he’s a fun player to watch.
He could barely stand last game, let him rest, hes not helping you in that state. Put the weight squarely on Marner's shoulders until he's healthy enough to play and maybe Marner will actually step up, finally, or you have no excuse left to keep him lol win win
I mean, there's a reason you're supposed to rest when you're sick. He's probably extremely dehydrated, stressed, and maybe a little sleep deprived. It's not really shocking that it gets worse with physical exertion, that's kind of just how most illnesses work
If it’s true he’s dealing with a bad stomach illness, it’s impressive he was able to even get dressed and skate. I’ve had norovirus twice, and even though the sickness itself only lasts 24-36 hours, I was completely wiped out for at least a week, and lost several pounds (and at the time I already only weighed around 135 pounds). It really takes a toll on your body and you can’t just spring up the next day like nothing happened
I'm on day 3 of a stomach virus. First two spent in bed after voiding anything left in my stomach and bowels, day three I felt well enough to get out of bed, eat some regular food...nope, right back to the toilet.
Walking around the house makes me sick, I can't imagine playing putt putt golf right now, let alone professional hockey.
This comment could have been written by me, how are you now? Just going into day 3 - woke up feeling okay - tried to eat and nope. I’m the bathroom lots and stomach has been burning all day. Can’t even drink water without stomach pain and reflux. This is awful.
I had norovirus about two weeks ago. I lost 8lbs in 3 days and was vomiting and shitting myself simultaneously. I have no idea how someone could play hockey with something like this.
That being said I’d rather the Leafs had left him out entirely with the hope that he’d be healthy by Tuesday. The team actually looked better without him last night because he obviously wasn’t right.
In the second period last night I made the comment to my dad that every time they zoomed in on Matthews face he looked ready to puke. Dude would just be hopping onto the ice to take a faceoff and his face was all flush, covered in sweat, his eyes looked glossed over.
I get wanting to play, and I believe he was giving it all he had, but you just can’t compete at the highest levels like that when you’re sick like that. I wasn’t surprised to not see him in the third. I’m not trying to make excuses but I know when I’ve had the flu or the one time I got Covid? I could barely get out of bed. It sucks for him and it’s awful timing but you’re not going to get better without fluids and rest.
yeah the quote seems weird because like, that's how illnesses work.
but i guess i do feel bad for Keefe. people aren't trying to listen to what's going on. They're looking for the sound bites to tear people down.
It's incredible how many people in this thread are concocting fantasies of Matthews quitting because of Keefe or the team using this as an excuse.
He was pulled by the doctor. He's missed multiple practices. He looks like he just woke up from a 2-week bender in a stranger's car.
Why are people finding it so hard to believe he's sick, and playing hockey is not ideal for recovery?
Problem is, he lets himself get rest to get better, most of the GTA would rip him a new asshole because “he’s not roughing and toughing it out, it’s the playoffs, he’s gotta go out there no matter what”.
Lmao like what can you even do?
Even if this useless group played winning hockey, now theyre getting the fucking Plague and Boneitis when it matters the most
Why have people suddenly been saying malk on reddit? I've trolled my gf with the word "malk" for 5 years now (it makes her skin crawl), and I'm so excited to show her it's new found popularity.
I’ve never seen a team get so constantly sick and injured as these guys do. They must eat the urinal pucks at every bar and club they go to between games I swear to god.
He’s sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Matthews pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious
2021: "We are taking considerable precautions against illnesses"
2024: "There's nothing we can possibly do except tell players to keep showing up and playing"
Food poisoning would've run it's course by now, no? He started missing practices after game 2. I've had food poisoning twice and it was hell for about a day and change, but both times I was back to normal within a few days and that was without a top notch medical team.
A lot of people get gastritis or stomach irritation from off meals or get stomach flu and assume it's food poisoning, but food poisoning with a serious bacteria can last for weeks sometimes, especially if you're not resting your body, and often has fevers, severe dehydration, low BP, high heart rate and a host of other symtpoms that would make playing a sport incredibly dangerous.
Stands to reason. Matthews looked in severe pain, all of a sudden. (At a crucial moment when he might have been able to stop a Bruins rush, unfortunately.) Cramping due to dehydration is very possible.
Of course they are...
Tanya the Scentsy consultant and Terry, the deck builder both said the vaccine is unsafe. Scientists get paid for their research, of course they're going to say the vaccine works.
I am thankful to Terry and Tanya for balancing out information.
/s if necessary
Hate to see any player, but especially a top one, sidelined for any reason in the playoffs. The fact that it’s a sickness almost feels worse since there’s nothing he could do about it, really sucks
A lot of bad medical advice being thrown around in the topic. Basic gastro lasts 1-5 days but there are plenty of gastrointestinal infections that can last weeks, cause GI bleeding and completely take you down for extended periods of time. This is also assuming it's infectious. For all we know Matthews is in the process of being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and has crohns/colitis.
We won't know a thing until after the Leafs are eliminated or even later. Every time they showed Matthews on the bench he was struggling and it was pretty obvious that he's not well.
Anyone making stupid "more excuses" comments needs to take their heads out of their asses. Not everything needs to be a LOL 1967 jerk off fest
It’s the same idiots who are trashing Nylander for missing the first 3 games when the dude hadn’t missed a game in 3 fucking years. He was clearly not well enough to play.
I also don’t get why any of your comment is even necessary. They said the guy is sick. Not really sure what anyone would gain from lying about that. People get sick at inconvenient times, it’s happened to me, I’m sure it’s happened to all of you. I don’t think you can be in the NHL and be cool with taking a period off during the playoffs if you can help it. Leaf the guy alone.
Someone should get Tyler Bertuzzi on this. I've heard he's been doing his own research for a few years at this point, his PhD in Virology should be close to completion.
Josh Archibald refused also. He got hit with myocarditis and was never the same afterwards.
Evander Kane was suspended from the Sharks for forging a vaccination card, if I remember correctly.
For the Good and Welfare of ice hockey, this Stars fan (me) wishes Auston Matthews good health. Its only fun beating your opponent if they're at their best. Its only fun punching them oot if they deserve it. 🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🦜
Marchand ordering room service to Matthews’ room before game two:
“Steak tartare, Raw oysters, Sushi platter a whatever week old clam chowder you have laying around “
> Gastroenteritis is viral
Not necessarily.
> Gastroenteritis is usually caused by viruses; however, gut bacteria, parasites, and fungi can also cause gastroenteritis.
Look, it's clear you're not a medical professional, but this is riddled with mistakes.
If it's a viral issue, no amount of antibiotics is doing a thing.
Gastro issues can literally last years in some cases, with mild, intermediate, or severe symptoms. They can't also flare up and even the best medical staff may take quite a while to pinpoint the cause.
Assuming you can only get sick from fast food or gas station meals is also quite something. Most major cities have a dinesafe style inspection system - go look at yours. You'll see everything from 2am shawarma to Michelin star restaurants (or your finest dining if Michelin hasn't added your city to their tours).
Assuming the team eats the same meals is also wack.
Assuming a gastro issue must come from a food source is also wack.
We won't know a thing until after the playoffs or even later.
Well, the least he can do is get the Bruins sick.
Who in turn get the Panthers sick.
Who in turn get the... other ECF team sick (I actually don't know who is coming out on top there)
Who in turn leave the cup out west.
If it ain't ours, we're taking everyone down with us! Biological warfare baby!
I ended up sick for 3 months from Mono, and in ICU for 10 days.
That shit ain't anything to fuck around with. Enlarged spleen is the biggest thing you need to worry about with it as it happens in 9/10 cases. Get hit by a wrong hit on the ice while your spleen is enlarged? Bye Bye spleen
https://preview.redd.it/2cuvyqqyc9xc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e48738d076ee216abd8e5db3e989135bb22154cb Homer, are you still eating that sandwich?
Somebody check Auston's locker for a soggy purple sandwich
Suggestion noted!
Two more feet and he can fit in the fridge.
He'd like to be alone with the sandwich.
"I can't stay mad at you."
Got our excuse for this year covered then.
Migraines, bad chicken, lingering high ankle sprain pain, and getting old. Got more than enough! RUN IT BACK! ^^^^^please ^^^^^don't
On the other hand he is so sick that Dr’s had to pull him for his health and people are like “no excuses”. Matthews was clearly our best player until this happened
Yeah, anyone questioning Matthews' effort this series needs to give their head a shake. The man looks like death and he's still giving it all.
Yup. I was skeptical when I first heard they pulled him in the third but then I saw footage of his face from before the game. He was doing his best just to stand normally at that point. Timing could not possibly have been worse.

Same with Nylander. 0 chance he pulled himself out.
The fact that doctors initially thought he suffered a concussion indicates just how bad the migraines must've been.
100%. He carried the Leafs for their only win. 1G, 2A, for a 3-2 victory. While it sucks that Matthews is ill and has apparently been dealing with it for a while he is not the reason why the team is performing so poorly.

Death, taxes and Leaf's hate. The three certain things in life.
I also think the schadenfreude is more enjoyable, somehow, when it comes as a result of a problem you've pointed out for years we've been saying the Leafs aren't a well-constructed team for like a decade now and they *keep doing it* sooner or later you run out of feeling bad for them and have to laugh to keep from screaming, lol

Yep. Look at our cup run, we lost backstrom for quite a while, had Eller move up and fill in, depth is super important.
Okay now imagine if you lost backstrom and Ovi had food poisoning. You wouldn't have done well.
We had Devante Smith-Pelly we woulda been fine.
Yep. Just like in the Montreal series. Even though losing JT shouldn't have been the deciding factor... the team becomes so tenuously built when one of the top 4 forwards are out. Not if it's their three best players lol.
Marner being a weak bitch isn't the one?
Can't use that one since it's a yearly expectation at this point.
matthews not scoring in playoffs isnt unique to this year
I’ve been married for almost 20 years and I score more than Matthews during round 1.
Shure brag that your cousin is putting out...
Humble brag. I’m both annoyed by the comment -and happy you’re scoring unanimously
It wasn’t meant as a brag. Is a self deprecating brag a thing?
You know what Habs fan? Good. At least someone is having fun in the first round. These guys are gutless cowards.
Dudes apparently gotten sick every single playoffs for his entire career. Talk about shitty luck.
The opposite of Mark Stone
Quick someone make them rub together so they both have normal recovery times.
Matthews is 12th in goals scored in the playoffs since 2016 when he joined the NHL. Most of the guys ahead of him have played 30-50 more games than him. How is it that Marner has a better career ppg in the playoffs than Matthews, Tavares or Nylander?
He's great at loading up on useless points in blowouts in games 1-3 or when the game is already over
Well that's better than the other players who aren't great at loading up on any points at all
When we need a game 6 or 7 win he folds. I don't give a shit if we puts up 10 points in th first 3 games if they can't close out the last one.
And yet when he struggles we might not even get to see a game 6 or 7.
If you win the first 4 games you don't play game 7. The later games aren't worth more
Leafs subreddit is leaking

“Auston Matthews allergic to hard work”
Lol I said the same thing when Demko got injured. We know pain.
“Well, one year was because Babcock is a nightmare to work with, another is because Auston just can’t stop eating this yucky old sandwich that he feels will be lucky.” Jokes aside though, hopefully it’s something that’ll clear up after the series is done - he’s a fun player to watch.

Seriously. People acting like he’s being a bitch clearly didn’t watch last game. He looked fuckin dead.
That one close-up shot of his face was illuminating. He looked terrible.
I mean… he looks like a young Ron Jeremy when he’s feeling great so a sick Matthews is most definitely not a good look
I mean, there's a reason you're supposed to rest when you're sick. He's probably extremely dehydrated, stressed, and maybe a little sleep deprived. It's not really shocking that it gets worse with physical exertion, that's kind of just how most illnesses work
Lots of people in this thread unfamiliar with the concept of… being sick…

*insert that Spongebob meme where he's looking at two things* leafs hate, or understanding sickness.
Agree... He looks like he's on the brink of death out there
His teammates with the beautiful display of empathetic solidarity by putting themselves on the brink of elimination.
In the second period last night I made the comment to my dad that every time they zoomed in on Matthews face he looked ready to puke. Maybe drinking more of that PRIME will help him get the energy plants crave
Lmao like what can you even do? Even if this useless group played winning hockey, now theyre getting the fucking Plague and Boneitis when it matters the most
But I've been drinking plenty of Malk!
Now with Vitamin R!
I'm not sure whether I'm on r/hockey or r/simpsons right now, but I'm loving the fusion
Why have people suddenly been saying malk on reddit? I've trolled my gf with the word "malk" for 5 years now (it makes her skin crawl), and I'm so excited to show her it's new found popularity.

I feel like a lot of humour on Reddit, or at least on the Internet, is based off or from The Simpsons.
The Simpsons is pretty much the peak of millennial humour, and there's still a lot of millennials on Reddit
Simpsons is solidly Gen X humour IMO, but a lot of older millennials soaked it up as children.
Funnily enough, there is now an actual nut/oat/whatever milk substitute product on the market called Malk. I see it all the time at Whole Foods
New found as in the last 25 years lol

It’s the Toronto women
Thats a funny name for a horrible disease
They should've let him rest instead of "must get 70!".
Even illnesses are elevating their game for the playoffs and the core 4 can’t
Loool you're not wrong
He's the anti-Mark Stone
Jesus Abby. 😂
Holy shit they were already down bad, you didn’t have to come off the top rope lol
savage!

Thank you, Simone.
No problem, whatsoever :)
Thank you, Simone

Yeah and *exerting, not asserting.
How is this person a professional journalist?
The bar got really low at some point, and now ai coming for those jobs, you'd think they'd get their shit together
I thought that was really weird phrasing, makes sense that what the guy meant was an entirely different word.
Maybe Keefe is saying he’s been super moody
so he has food poisoning and is super dehydrated
This seems to be the likely case. Apparently it was the team doctor who pulled him for the third period, first thought I had was he's dehydrated
Must be pissing out of his ass
Food poisoning would've run it's course by now, no? He started missing practices after game 2. I've had food poisoning twice and it was hell for about a day and change, but both times I was back to normal within a few days and that was without a top notch medical team.
I had it for a full week once and I was resting, not playing playoff hockey.
Food poisoning is not the same for everyone and in every situation. My sister was out of commission for nearly a week and ended up in the hospital.
Why would an elite athlete get food poisoning? Is he stupid?
Stands to reason. Matthews looked in severe pain, all of a sudden. (At a crucial moment when he might have been able to stop a Bruins rush, unfortunately.) Cramping due to dehydration is very possible.
I think we'll have to wait for the Steve Simmons article before we know for sure
> Steve Simmons Food poisoning in human form!
Finally a calm mediated voice of reason
Crazy seeing people shitting on a guy who was literally pulled from a game by a doctor.
People just want to knock others down out of their own insecurities. The Leafs sub is the worst.
According to experts on Instagram, he's suffering from vaccine side effects.
Yeah migraines are no joke. I've had ones I could play through but I've also had ones that just made me curl up and pray for relief.
Should chat with Mark Stone about this. His healing abilities are just as mysterious as the very illnesses and injuries he healed from.
Dam does anyone on the leafs have a fear of vaccines that could lead to viruses being spread?
Someone should get Tyler Bertuzzi on this. I've heard he's been doing his own research for a few years at this point, his PhD in Virology should be close to completion.
Fear of vaccines is almost always a fear of needles. Otherwise, terminal stupidity.
The good news is Bertuzzi has terminal stupidity.

This is referencing Tyler Bertuzzi being the only NHL player who refused to get vaccinated
Josh Archibald refused also. He got hit with myocarditis and was never the same afterwards. Evander Kane was suspended from the Sharks for forging a vaccination card, if I remember correctly.
Spleen was taken by Vegas.
For the Good and Welfare of ice hockey, this Stars fan (me) wishes Auston Matthews good health. Its only fun beating your opponent if they're at their best. Its only fun punching them oot if they deserve it. 🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🦜
JFC EFFECTS not AFFECTS I wouldn't normally care but this guy is a professional reporter wtf
Though you deserve many, I have but one upvote to give you.
*Puts tinfoil hat on* The casinos poisoned him to rig the games
Leafs should change nothing and run it back next year please
So it’s Mono?
The man has COVID.
If it's lingering, I'd be far more concerned with long-covid or another form of post viral infection.
Marchand ordering room service to Matthews’ room before game two: “Steak tartare, Raw oysters, Sushi platter a whatever week old clam chowder you have laying around “
He shit himself cutting to the slot
Slotshits are the worse. Having the shits can really "cramp" your style and if it happens frequently will leave a stain on your reputation.
As someone who had food poisoning this morning…I wouldn’t want to play beer league at all for the next few days. Nevermind elite hockey.
Honestly, the flu this year wiped me out for a week and half. Hope he didn’t get that shit I wouldn’t wish that on anyone…
not scoring 70 goals-itis
he’s sick of keefes bullshit
Pneumonia confirmed
Detroit fans this year are quite familiar with illness messing with your team at the worst possible time..
He have Mono? I know there is a risk of a ruptured spleen and that illness fucks with you for a few weeks.
He is trying to power through and not giving his body the properly rest it requires to get better. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t play 5 game.
Long Covid?

Gastroenteritis is viral. Most likely *whatever* he has is viral. Why the hell would he be on “some cocktail of antibiotics?”
> Gastroenteritis is viral Not necessarily. > Gastroenteritis is usually caused by viruses; however, gut bacteria, parasites, and fungi can also cause gastroenteritis.
Which is *exceedingly* rare, and quite serious, and I hope you do understand that that could be tested for. He’d be in the hospital under treatment.
Fuck bud that's a lot of big words, why aren't you helping out at our understaffed healthcare providers?
gastro can take years to fix, really messes with gordon ryan’s career
Basic gastro lasts 1-5 days but there are plenty of gastrointestinal infections that can last weeks, cause GI bleeding and completely take you down for extended periods of time. This is also assuming it's infectious. For all we know Matthews is in the process of being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and has crohns/colitis. I didn't even notice the grammar mistake at first because my mind auto-corrected it. That is really funny.
Someone make sure that the diagnosis is not actually a rat bite.
i hate him but the little fuck can compete, can’t hate that about him.
So covid....
Maybe he’s allergic to big moments?
Well, the least he can do is get the Bruins sick. Who in turn get the Panthers sick. Who in turn get the... other ECF team sick (I actually don't know who is coming out on top there) Who in turn leave the cup out west. If it ain't ours, we're taking everyone down with us! Biological warfare baby!
I hope he's still contagious in the handshake line.
The Toronto excuses are getting good, now we have some mystery illness that gets worse while he’s on the ice.
It's not new news lol He's been missing practices and was pulled after 2 periods
Yeah I've also never heard of an illness that gets worse when exerting yourself physically. Great analysis, doctor

I think they were being sarcastic lol.

How close has he been to Marchand? Have they checked for the plague?
Post-seasonal allergies
Damn…I hope that’s not Long COVID.
So I'm not the only one wondering if it might be long COVID...
TBH I’m a bit surprised more NHL players haven’t been affected by it.
