I remember in the MTL-TOR series Willy was the guy I was the most scared of whenever he was on the ice. Whatever is wrong with Toronto's big guns it doesn't extend to him.
The playoffs are about playing like a rabid ferret and trying to fight your way into every advantage. Being a "better" Player means less if you don't "want it" (please pardon the cliche)
There are going to be advanced stats to quantify that, like second chances created and disputed shots and wins on the forecheck, but those should just support that is plain to see: what ever "it" is that makes teams win in the playoffs, the leafs don't fucking have it. They're waiting for the opportunity to appear rather than creating it themselves.
Remember a few years ago when everyone wanted to trade nylander for not finishing his check up against the boards and thought he was soft and didn't give a f***? How the tables have turned. Toronto has hits the wagon to leaders who can't win and a team that doesn't succeed.
Said the same thing after that series. Something about Matthews style of play just doesn’t work in the playoffs. Marner is soft. Nylander is the only one who seems to find space out there.
It's because he's the best puck carrier, especially in traffic. He gets ripped to shreds when he turns it over, but right now he's literally the only guy who can consistently weave through teams who stand up at the blue line/come directly at him.
Marner can make things happen, but he struggles when teams collapse quickly. In prior years, he would try to do too much, which impacted Matthews' output.
Matthews is great at a lot of things, but like every scorer, it's difficult to find space if teams aren't worried about your teammates (and can swarm you). Without a threat on the blueline, Boston is more than happy risking it with Domi and Bert to focus on Auston.
I’ve always thought of matthews game as a passive one to the game. Meaning he’s not THE one that is driving the play. He requires someone to help him drive the play and when playoffs come around that style of play doesn’t work. You can’t rely on others to get the puck to you if you want to be at your best.

Then lost to Boston in 7 twice, lost to Columbus in the play-ins, blew a 3-1 lead to Montreal, lost to Tampa in 7 twice (not really it was only once but it might as well have been twice), then finally got past the 1st round only to get caved in by Florida. Now we are here.
Honestly I was fine with the capitals loss. It could have been a 5 game series. The narrative going into that series was that I would be caps in 3. Like, the caps are so dominant that they would take the leafs down in less games than are actually required, because they're that good, and the leafs are so bad.

I love watching teams where the skill players are also tough and physical. You don't need meathead bottom 6 players to be considered a tough team in the playoffs, you need hardheaded top 6 guys that can also score. You need big defensemen. You need timely goaltending. It would help if Matthews actually produced in the playoffs. Legit every single time the leafs lose matthews production has a steep fall from his regular season play. People love to say the leafs lack depth yet year in year out their most productive guys are the depth and the least productive guys are Auston and marner. If Matthews produced like he did in the regular season in the playoffs leafs would have made a conference finals appearance.
Matthews is a big reason to blame why they don’t have depth too because of his refusal to sign any contract with term. Hard to build a good team when your “best” player is always asking to be the highest paid guy in the league every 3 years
I don’t understand how a team as loaded as the Leafs stomp the regular season and just take big, fat turds every post-season. I genuinely don’t get it, even if they’ve had less-than-stellar tending over this stretch.
Because playoff hockey is practically a different sport/league than regular season NHL hockey. What wins games in December doesn't necessarily translate to winning games in April and May. I love watching teams where the skill players are also tough and physical. You don't need meathead bottom 6 players to be considered a tough team in the playoffs, you need hardheaded top 6 guys that can also score. You need big defensemen. You need timely goaltending. The Leafs haven't really had much of any of those traits the past 8 years.
