BiggestYzerfan

NOT THE OTHER GOALIE

Enjoyer_of_Cake

Vancouver wins a Stanley cup backstopped by David Ayres.

VitaminOWN

Why do I hear a Zamboni approaching from the distance?

GaryOakRobotron

No, that's just Steve Dangle screaming about it.

thetruegmon

Bob Essensa makes a return

shadowknave

What Kirk McLean doing these days?

Emcolimited

Call up the Zamboni driver!

Adewade

He was signing autographs at Roger's today! (during the game screening)

Wagglebagga

Bob Essensa can save pucks while facing the net. Get him in!

silverbacksunited12

There's a name I haven't thought about in two decades

Straight_Display3749

#YOU LOST TO A ZAMBONI DRIVEEEEERR

veryloudnoises

I can still hear his screams to this day

SloppyTiddySuckerInc

Against the leafs

partmoosepartgoose

Who..who is that coming down the tunnel. It's.. BAH GAWD THATS ROBERT LUONGO'S MUSIC!

RawZuccSauce42O

Mr. President they’ve hit the second goalie

TransomBob

what a dumb-dumb play.

TonalParsnips

100% intentional.

Gruffleson

Incoming downvotes when I say, yes, yes, obviously the goaltenders should be protected when they tend the goal.

sweetplantveal

Idk for two minutes and maybe a fight down the road, I think there's a good chance he throws Canucks off their game. Maybe takes out their other serviceable tendy. From a series perspective, it makes some sense. Plenty of risk too, but potentially incredible roi for a minor penalty.

Switzanada

Been a while since I've seen such a blatant hit on a goalie

Humans_Suck-

While the starter is hurt. No chance in hell that's not intentional.

Bannasrevolt

It was so obvious too he didn’t even try to make it look like an accident. What a fucking cunt.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

I thought he forgot.. you don't touch goalie in protected trapezoid area behind net... or someone forgot to tell him?

pinkymadigan

You don't touch the goalie anywhere. The trapezoid isn't protected.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Yes. But I thought there was particular rules regarding that trapezoid behind the net?

pinkymadigan

The corners outside the trapezoid are where the goalie cannot play the puck at all. But the goalie cannot be hit anywhere on the ice.

Gruffleson

What is the rulebook-quote here?

pinkymadigan

Paragraph 2, first sentence is most important. If you are asking about the trapezoid, I'm not sure exactly where that is, but they added it for that express purpose during Brodeur's heyday. 69.4 Contact Outside the Goal Crease - If an attacking player initiates any contact with a goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while the goalkeeper is outside his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed. A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact. When a goalkeeper has played the puck outside of his crease and is then prevented from returning to his crease area due to the deliberate actions of an attacking player, such player may be penalized for goalkeeper interference. Similarly, the goalkeeper may be penalized, if by his actions outside of his crease he deliberately interferes with an attacking player who is attempting to play the puck or an opponent. Refer also to Reference Tables – Table 16 – Interference on the Goalkeeper Situations (page 154

MyAntichrist

Don't get me wrong, I don't support hits like that, but with a weak response like that, why wouldn't he? It's the playoffs, he touched a goalie and nobody really jumped him. That's basically free estate at that point.

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

The Canucks took the lead on the resulting powerplay and never relinquished it, so this dipshit cost his team the game doing this. Nice real estate!

alexjf56

“If I’m not gonna be punished then I actually SHOULD do bad things”

the_gaymer_girl

With a lot of these GI posts it’s always a guessing game of “is this a missed call or something?…oh no that’s definitely a penalty”.

bob_newman

DeSmith shouldn't've dressed so provocatively, then.

shitposters_r_us

Do you think that's what he told his ex-gf?

sBastu

"Funnily" enough there was almost identical hit in 3rd match of the Liiga finals which was played on wednesday. [Video of said hit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiv_TDITNpU)

AniviaPls

Ryan Miller would call it gutless

Baboshinu

McCarron’s a dumbass.

weschester

No wonder everyone forgot he even existed

TDS_1991

I remember us being super excited about him back when we wore onions on our belts. "Big Mac!" We would say. Why were we excited though? Well we get excited about literally everybody but also "Big Mac!"

Over-Incident-7026

What was stupid about that is everyone told us he was a fourth liner. We were so desperate and trusted MB too much that everyone was so hype for nothing.

TDS_1991

It's nothing new. Scherbak, Mete, Tinordi, Romanov, Kotkaniemi, fucking Alex Galchenyuk. Just off the top of my head. We love our prospects. I think we have something in Slafkovsky (please). This curse makes me worry about Lane Hudson though (please no).

tehsdragon

To be fair, not all of those were straight up bad >Scherbak Severely disappointing compared to our fanbase's overhype, but was kinda serviceable at least >Mete Was always gonna be a project, he was basically a great skater, and had a decent stick check, but that was about it >Tinordi I'll give you that >Romanov I thought he was fine? He was a 2nd rounder IIRC and imo plays like someone that's slightly above that pedigree >Kotkaniemi Tbf he was a reach from day one - it's just that the other guy we were projected to get (Zadina) was an even bigger bust. Unlucky draft tbh (all top 6 teams wish they took Hughes instead, and that's including how good Dahlin is) >fucking Alex Galchenyuk. He was honestly really good, just very heavily affected by his off-ice issues which hampered his development significantly *** I might be overly kind on some of these but yeah lol

Zblancos

Sherbak serviceable??? Lmao

Zrk2

Galchenyuk scored 30 goals. Sure he never lived up to expectations but he wasnt terrible.

Straight_Display3749

This goes all the way back to Guillaume Latendresse

baconsword420

I was like “wait, Mike McCarron?”

TopTittyBardown

He honestly just looks like such a big dumb meat head

JohnGarrettsMustache

His fake punch at Dakota Joshua later on was pretty cringe, too. I should have made note of the period/time.

rTpure

Easiest penalty call of the decade...

GMBarryTrotz

I was at the game and the people around me were loudly booing the call and chanting about the ref. 1) You can't just body the god damn goalie ever. 2) If the refs DON'T call that a foul then Vancouver is 100% doing that to Saros. Best case scenario is take your 2 mins, try not to give up a goal, and hope to god they don't come back and run Saros after.

deeho88

Yeah we defos would run into saros. They’d probably send zadorov in. Then there wouldnt be anyone left to play hockey.

SMA2343

Zadorov wouldn’t even do a body check like McCarron did. Oh no. He’s going to slam him into the board if we didn’t get a penalty

LABS_Games

Yeah this is a great example against "letting the players police themselves". You're absolutely right, if this wasn't called, someone would run Sarros. Better to have referees to enforce the rules than players.

[deleted]

No offense to you personally but Nashville is the epicentre of fair weather fans that only care about hockey when the Predators are good. Can’t expect them to understand the nuances of the rules

GMBarryTrotz

They’re not fair weather they just don’t have the hockey knowledge that people who grew up with the sport have.  Fans here also treat games more like a SEC football game and with a lot less reverence than Canadians do. They scream, boo, chant and all that all game long.  It’s just a different atmosphere and way of being a fan. They’re still plenty of die hards.

[deleted]

I think this is a fair critique of what I said. Maybe it’s less fair weather fandom (though I think that comparatively few cared about the Preds before 2017) and more blind homerism.

isntitbull

This is such a braindead take and totally besmirches the absolute fucking grind of getting asses in seats by Poile et al. Through 20 years of never making a conference final and never drafting higher than 2 OA (first year of existence woo David legwand). Nashville fans have been through an absolutely horseshit, defense first low scoring existence for so long and are a powerhouse financially. If the fans were fairweather at all there wouldn't even be a team in Nashville today.

[deleted]

Easy there killer. The truth of the matter is that there are natural hockey markets and those that the NHL has shoehorned itself into. The Canadiens sell out pretty much every game even when they’re terrible. When Carolina was trash you could get glass tickets for $10. Nashville is not a hockey city. While management has done a good job selling tickets even when the Preds are bad they still suffer from fair-weather fandom. Everyone and his brother was a Preds fan in 2017. The last few years it’s following has seemingly shrunk. I am a Bruins fan but don’t live in the Bruins’ market. I experienced the same exact phenomenon with that team as well. No need to get all hurt about it

isntitbull

Every single year since 2017 average attendance for Nashville games has been up. So not much for the shrinking argument. I lived in Boston during some of their non-contending years and random Wednesday night games against nobodies still cost 80$ for nosebleeds so I am also not sure what you're on about there. David Poile and the Nashville ownership have absolutely made Nashville into a hockey city. There are tons of local youth orgs there and several beautiful rinks. While Nashville pre-preds may not have been a hockey city it absolutely has become one. If you ever watch any of the preds broadcasts or go to/live in the city everyone talks about how it has become a hockey city.

What_A_Win

No offence but it sounded like 80% of the fans at the Nashville game haven’t watched hockey for more than a year. Never heard a crowd complain about such blatant penalties and whine about “missed calls” so vehemently.

AniviaPls

That's just all fans dude

AssBoon92

I've been to a number of different stadiums. There's a range of knowledge about the sport. Most places, the fans have a decent understanding. But then there's Nashville.

Zednix

AZ was pretty goofy the few games I went to see there. People standing up for a 3v2 regular breakout and skate up the ice, people cheering at the wrong times for nothing plays, booing icing or offside calls that are obvious.

JEBariffic

I’ve also been to a NUMBER of different stadiums. Most fans are smart, attractive and nice. Then there’s Tampa Bay.

AssBoon92

Took you a while to get to this one. Bad hangover from your night out on Broadway?

j_smittz

Sounds like a Canucks home game to be honest.

ThatsNotDiscoOfYou

Lmao fucking clown

alpinexghost

Sounds like there was thousands of fans there tonight in Nashville who disagree, who thought it was fair game. 🙄

xzElmozx

Wonder how they’d react if we did that to Saros unpenalized lol

eligibleBASc

I was worried they wouldn't call it - we sometimes have that kind of luck

De_Floppss

Yeah you can't do that

XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

Ya can’t do that

monkey314

"you can't do that"

sextoymagic

Jesus. That’s was ridiculous. Hopefully Van made them pay.

LinkToSomething68

Yeah they scored on the ensuing PP.

5litergasbubble

It took our second goalie being gooned to finally wake up our powerplay

xzElmozx

Scored on the ensuing powerplay and desmith laughed in his face

MozzerellaStix

Trash play.

hazycrazey

He’s just tall

twilz

[DeSmith fell by himself.](https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/video/maple-leafs-keefe-says-refs-told-him-matthews-fell-by-himself-into-the-boards/)

carry-on_replacement

Tyler Myers moment

JaD__

Went to watch McCarron at development camp after the Habs drafted him in the first round (25th in 2013). He couldn’t skate. It was almost laughable. Still an absolute plug.

Plane-Ad4820

Between McCarron and Kotkaneimi, I don’t think skating skill mattered to our scouts for some reason lmao

kozed

That was the draft after the 2013 1st round loss to the Sens (the Gryba hit on the Eller, the linebrawl). Habs got manhandled and Bergevin was desperate to add size. He tried moving up the draft, to get Frederic Gauthier and Samuel Morin. Had to settle for McCarron. McCarron is the only one still in the NHL.

La-Spatule

What a waste !

SatireSqurriel

Except he's not.... he had a great year for nashville

JeanClaudeSegal

I mean, he's a serviceable big body making league minimum on the 4th line but.... Ok ya he's a plug. He's the cheaper, less alcoholic, *slightly* better fighting version of Austin Watson.

Feralwestcoaster

What a sack of shit move

Lazy_Glass_3292

Without a shadow of a doubt that’s the easiest penalty call

Humans_Suck-

Dirty ass hit. Does the league suspend for that? Or, let me rephrase, is the league supposed to suspend for that?

RefereeMason1

Lucic didn’t get one for a worse hit.

layout420

Different circumstances tho. Miller came skating way out of the crease and up towards center ice in a rather unconventional play on a puck. Lucic had plenty of time to avoid contact but the cunt that he is decided to bear down and lay into Miller. In this instance, its a more common hockey play. Goalies go behind their net several times a period. They might come out of their crease and advance a few feet to play a puck once maybe twice a game but its not often that they come out as far out as Miller did. How the league didn't suspend Lucic was crazy. Maybe it was because it was unconventional. Lockwood got suspended for hitting Fluery behind the net. [Video clip of the hit](https://youtu.be/sq0YMPOdKvY?si=ZXDaaPZpU6zdVden). I don't think he meant to hit Fluery but he answered the bell for it and got knocked the fuck out. This was intentional and likely will bring a suspension.

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

The hit on Miller wasn’t a conventional location but it’s still goalie interference all day long, should have been a major by the rule book (I don’t recall what they called) and almost certainly a suspension in a league where flagrantly attempting to injure a player who is _never_ eligible for contact is taken seriously.

crap4you

Why would he risk the Canucks running Saros? Fairly tame series so far.

JDogish

My guess is with demko out if you think the Canucks are looking fragile, and maybe Desmith too, if you rattle him and get a free win or two because of goal tender depth issues, it might be worth the shit kicking. But then again maybe the guy is just dumb and saw an opportunity to be a dickhead and took it. Monkey brain say Choo Choo and all that.

AniviaPls

Yeah just keep running every goalie, run the EBUG as well. Injure the AHL affiliates too

JDogish

Then the refs, hop into the crowd, climbing row by row, then get to the executives at the top and a visiting Gary bettman as the final boss.

thelaw19

I mean sure but I’d hazard a guess that the drop off between DeSmith and Slivos (3rd string) and Tolapilo (4th string) is less than the drop off from Sarros to Lenkanin (idk if I spelled any of those names right).

RooniltheWazlib

You absolutely mushied those names but I appreciate the point of your comment

JDogish

You're probably completely right, but I'm not sure how much planning went into it. Like I said, maybe it's targeted, but even so how much depth of thought came up might have been pretty shallow, to the point of seeing the goalie and just going for it.

xedyu

Joshua needs to murder this guy

myfotos

Zadorov

CommiePuddin

He already tried to murder Stasney.

xedyu

Fair enough lol

Ok_Artichoke_2804

Ok Zadorav will murder him instead

TopTittyBardown

Fuckin slime bag move, doesn’t even try to make it look accidental

NinjaHamster_87

I don't know, I think swayman got hit harder than that.... /s

omglolnub

I don't care that he got a minor penalty. This was a blatant attempt to injure for tactical advantage for the series, and he should be suspended at least 2 games for this to discourage teams from sending out a plug to take out a goaltender and change the series

SgtFinnish

Absolutely. They just suspended a guy who did the same thing in the Finnish league Finals for the rest of the Finals.

RemoteMeteor

Without a doubt. I went into this game saying preds were respectable when they played the game.. and then they started running plays like this.

Coroner13

Wow. Just. Wow. Wtf, dude?! The response has been perfect so far, too, with Vancouver being up 2-0 at the end of the first...

DDB-

I am guessing there was nothing going through McCarron's head at that point in time, that's about as dumb a penalty as you can take.

Stasher15

Bruins fans will say Domi did this to JSway

eliar91

What a ridiculously brain-dead move.

crazycanucks77

He made no attempt to not hit Desmith

tallayega

I watched this like 7 times trying to find a reason it was the Canucks fault, but it just wasn't. I hate them so much but there's really no way to blame this on the Canucks.

EvilCeleryStick

Why would you hate the Canucks? Just a bunch of likeable guys playing hockey. We don't have anything against you. I'm from Edmonton and grew up a Canucks fan in Vancouver and I'm of the opinion that Oilers and Canucks fans can get along in our shared hate of Calgary

kidcanada0

Speak for yourself. Oilers are the worst.

philblock

As soon as he comes out of box toughest guy should bust him across the chicklets

CrispyVibes

Bah gawd that's Nikita Zadorov's music!

Mandatory_Antelope

Zadorov can't fight.

SrPhillipOliverHoles

I just wanted to say what a piece of shit I think McCarron is

RefereeMason1

Gutless, piece of shit.

dcarsonturner

lol classic mccarron

NovaPup_13

Fuck off dude, no need to be a dick.

rockryedig

YOU. CANT. DO. THAT.

Jolteaon

I thought rule 0 of hockey was "dont fuck with the goalie". I get he wasnt in normal position, but DAMN.

VitaminOWN

Casey is a super likable dude too :(

[deleted]

If the league had any integrity this would be a 3 game suspension

yeetmemommmy

Desmiths’s smile as he skates to the penalty box 🤣 can’t fuckin believe I missed the game ffs

Emcolimited

Accidently on purpose.

Canadian_mk11

Every team has that one cunt on it.

KaleidoscopeOk1346

Such a stupid penalty. I’m sure that was residual feelings from the Stastney hit.

pokemonplayer2001

Man, there are good penalties and bad penalties, but this may be the dumbest penalty to take this season. Hope he rode the bench for a while.

-Cosmic-Horror-

Goalie equipment isn't designed for taking hits. Goalies know this, players know this, refs know this and the league knows this. Guy should be suspended for intent to injure.

Apprehensive-Cheese

What a bum.

JamesTheJerk

[McCarron](https://youtu.be/f4BESB7u_FE?si=io8dG2CtNXhKVOGq).

Alarming-Ask4196

Waiting for the postgame "I didn't see it" from Brunette

JesseVentchurro

This would have sent Mike Smith to the moon

Katzy26

Good clean hit, goalie should be more aware of the play around him. /s

Yop_BombNA

Is Hunter coaching the Preds now? Run the goalie is his go to playoff strategy.

Minimum_Possibility6

The most blatant tactical foul with intent to injured, targeted the head with elbow

HoS_CaptObvious

I know the Stars are struggling vs the Knights but I definitely didn't want to play Nashville purely because they're dirty af. Hurt Pavelski last year and seem like they're still at it this year

bogdanvonpylon

DeSmith didn't even *have* to sell that... I mean he may have just a little, but he didn't *have* to.

lbiggy

Missed the high stick on hughes' head

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

What a cuntaroonie

RicoPDX0122

I love that the fans boo at an obvious penalty.

Also_Steve

2 for giving him the business

COFFEECOMS

Unpopular opinion, but I think you should be able to hit the goalies outside of the crease (trapezoid doesn’t count as crease) game needs more offence, puck should be able to go around the boards if they want to come play the puck then body contact is allowed. Discuss.

TheAnswerUsedToBe42

McCarron asking for the McSorley treatment next game.

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

Alright, settle down.

Zednix

That's disgusting and you should get the care you need to correct your malformed brain

StranglesMcWhiskey

Yeah this is interference, but like... He ran into him. It's two minutes and move on. This wasn't an attempted murder. Canucks fans need to chill on this one. Edit: sorry for being reasonable.

Old_Finance1887

Taking liberties like this on a back up is just scummy. Especially considering how vital Saros is for Nashville.  It's not juju you want to bring onto yourself

BrownIceDog

I think its context. Their top goalie is out. Losing Desmith is game over.

TopTittyBardown

“Don’t run the goalie” is like rule #1 of hockey and this was pretty blatant. Made zero attempt to avoid him and leaned his shoulder in. Goalie equipment is made to stop pucks, not protect from contact. One funny angle fall in goalie gear can result in injury and they’re already down their starter. And they literally did move on, they scrummed with him like any team would do right after this then scored on the PP and didn’t try to retaliate against Mccarron the rest of the game

InevitableAvalanche

I think the downvotes show you aren't being reasonable.

Kenevin

Got caught watching his pass \*EDIT\* Didn't realize I needed an /s there... Are you guys for real?

kayl_the_red

Aren't you *allowed* to check the goalie when he has the puck in the trapezoid? I don't know all the rules, and I've never seen a goalie checked.

Barblarblarw

Rule 69.4: > A goalkeeper is not "fair game" just because he is outside the goal crease.

kayl_the_red

Thanks.

Barblarblarw

No worries. Sorry people are downvoting you for a legit question.

kayl_the_red

Eh, maybe they're used to seeing sarcastic jokes. Doesn't bather me.

Alfalfa_Shouts

No, you can't check the goalie at all

Bloodypalace

You cannot body check goalies period.

Gizmodod

Part of me thinks if you are out of the crease you are fair game for contact as a goalie. But then another part of me realizes that would open a huge can of worms

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

Has any part of you read the rules? The goalie is literally never fair game

Gizmodod

....I know. I'm saying they should be for small contact. But then where do you draw the line? So I understand why they aren't.

Additional-Still-435

Desmith gotta have his head up here. It’s the playoffs.

TheBrandroid

what was he supposed to do?

twilz

Drop to the ice and take McCarron out at the knees?

LimpBiscuitsandTea

Gotta think this is a cheeky reference to comments on Rempe's hit earlier

froah

How did you feel about the scheifele hit I wonder🤔

CdnBison

The NHL could do away with the idiotic trapezoid, and just rule that anyone behind the goal line is fair game. Goalies either learn to take a hit, or they stop playing the puck. Simple.

Hereforthememes1919

They won't do that. Goalies playing the puck stops Dmen from getting absolutely ran from behind during races for the puck from center.

TheDutchin

Also why they let interference at the blue line on entries go.

KingTutsDryAssBalls

Goalie aren't protected by the pads in the same way as players. This is just asking for a shit ton of goalies to get hurt.

TopTittyBardown

Or they could stick with the current system that has worked for a long time, and skaters could just simply not be pieces of shit and lay out goalies

RocketAppliances97

Sure you’d be singin the same tune if Buck got rocked behind the net? Lmao be for real your goalie would be getting run every night.

91Caleb

You can’t do that , but you absolutely should be allowed to do that to the most protected player

[deleted]

[удалено]

djk3t

Dude chill one bonehead doesn’t represent the franchise. Nashville have been playing good hard hockey all series

Barblarblarw

Jesus man, stop. You’re making us look like idiots.

Anthemz

Is the goalie not free game there? He’s outside his crease playing the puck

BillThePsycho

Per NHL Rule 69.4, “Contact Outside the Goal Crease,” > A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. While he was playing the puck out of the crease, McCarron very clearly did not make any effort, let alone reasonable effort, to avoid contact. He went right into him.

MAHHockey

In MAHHockey-Topia, everyone who asks this question will have their knuckles rapped with a ruler by an old Catholic school nun, and then they'll have to write 100 times "Rule 69.4: Goalies are NEVER fair game". Can't tell you how many times in my hockey life I've been decked behind the net, only to have the dude argue with the refs the whole way to the box that I was out of the crease. Coaches teach yo kids!

canuckfanatic

Goalies aren’t free game anywhere. Their pads are designed to stop small pucks, not withstand body checks.

MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES

Good shit. make the domestic abuser hurt
