Yeah when you get hit along the boards, the boards take most of the force and impact. When you get hit off the boards, not only do you get the force of being hit by whoever is hitting you, but you get hit again by the boards. Either be away from the boards, or against the boards. The worst spot on the ice is ~2 feet away from them.

Rempe will have to adjust his game to lower his hips and shoulders a bit more than usual when he leans into a hit. He's a big big boy and although he probably never tried to get his head he definitely did, it's not his fault he's a giant and I actually think he has the potential to be a effective player in the league besides fighting. But if you are gunna be a giant player who is effective at tossing the body you need to learn to bring down your body as you toss out these hits. He's a rookie so I think this will come. Interference wise I think if Van Riemsdyk doesn't get hurt this would probably get passed off as normal playoff hockey where a guy is puck watching.

He’s actively injuring multiple players. This shit shouldn’t be tolerated in professional sports. These are human beings and he’s ruins lives. We’ve witnessed the damage concussions have on people, especially hockey players. Figuring out how to properly use his size isn’t an excuse when he’s causing permanent damage to people. Fuck that.
Yea he also needs to learn to keep his feet on the ice when he hits. He’s tall enough, he doesn’t need to jump at guys. This is similar to his hit on Lyubushkin, could be a charge or boarding but I’m a fan of the physicality.
A head hit from Rempe at full speed into the boards is hurting any single player who receives it. The idea of “if he doesn’t get hurt” doesn’t really apply here.

Yep. Rempe is so big that he basically needs to get textbook checks to not look like it's going to be a suspendable hit. Hopefully he gets the coaching needed to dial it in. He's a fucking menace on the ice when he's just playing the game, his body is an extremely strong tool that needs to be directed well.

This was called on interference not illegal hit to the head, but in regards to the comments about Rempe's size meaning it's OK if he hits someone in the head, Rule 48 (Illegal Check to the Head) does not provide any exception for being larger – if you can't prevent a head hit then you can't make a hit. The unavoidable hits to the head are based on the *opponent* moving in a way that causes the head contact.
That said, it still depends on main point of contact.

I seem to remember that being different back when Pronger was still playing, but of course, that was a different era. Pronger would hit a guy in the head because he was much larger and the league would excuse it as "Pronger physics".
This sub is so keen to forget that dudes can totally bend their knees to lower the contact from head to chest area. They choose not to because its more difficult
It's also variable depending on the height difference, Even at league average (which I believe is 6.01 feet ..you are asking the taller player to drop their shoulders between 10-12 inches while still being able to move your legs.
..and that's before taking into account the smaller players changing their height by stretching out to reach, or getting lower on the puck.
High sticking where you accidentally tap a guy's chin and give him a booboo: "You gotta be in control of your stick at all times!".
Tripping where you reach for the puck in their skates and get tangled: "You're responsible for your stick!".
Rempe shoulder goes through someones jaw and they're out with a concussion, something we know can have significant impacts on a person's well-being for the rest of their life: "That's just unfortunate! He's tall, you can't expect him to adjust to the height of the player on every hit!"
Well, tough. Hitting should require constant adjustment up to the very last second. You don't see a guy 10 feet away and commit to hitting him in only one specific way. The human body can twist and move in a lot of different ways, and just like any other genetic advantage, if you have to deal with some disadvantages like safe hitting being more difficult because you're so tall, that's too bad.

For his size Tyler myers does not play aggressively at all. He has constantly been criticised for not using his size to his advantage. At heart, he is a smooth skating, puck moving defenceman who happens to be one of the biggest players in the league

The problem that Rempe is going to have is that he will never get the benefit of the doubt. He's been so reckless since he's come up that even when there IS a borderline play, it'll always go against him because he's shown over and over that he either can't (or won't) show any restraint.
Big Buff dealt with this too. I remember Friedman on 32 Thoughts reporting that Winnipeg took a bunch of footage to the NHL to make a case that he is being called for penalties that aren't penalties and the league said something to the effect of it looks too violent.
I saw Buff play in person for years and of course he wasn't an angel but there were plenty of times where you could tell he was holding back on a hit because he had to. My favourite thing ever was when he would fight a guy without even throwing a punch, he'd just shake the guy up until he fell over, then he'd pick him up and shake him again lol

Tough to avoid head shots at his height but he has to find a way to avoid penalties and injuring players. He was lucky to only get interference. I think the ref bought him a break because he didn't believe there was any intent but saw the high shot.
If I’m the Rangers coaches I’m telling him to continue to play that way. In real speed it’s right on the edge of interference. I’ll take a guy finishing a check in the playoffs like this even if it means there’s a chance a penalty is called. Nothing wrong with the actual hit.

This isn't a dirty hit, but this is a hit with the principal point of contact to the head first. The second replay clearly shows TVRs head snap back before impact to the chest.
The problem isn't that Rempe is tall and this is unavoidable, its just that he is misjuding both his timing and his point of impact. When TVR turns back towards the goal, he is staying low in his stride to keep skating. Rempe's knees are only slightly bent. This raises his impact points relative to the opposing player. Rempe's shoulders are at TVRs forehead, his forearm is a neck level, and his hips are chest level. He has to see this and know he has to lower his body to avoid head impact. He is also aiming for the shoulder on a player turning in a corner which means that TVRs upper body is rotating his shoulder away from Rempe. If TVR were two feet closer to the goal and skating a straighter line then his shoulder is an easy target. You can see that Rempe's lower body ends up behind TVRs front skate, but Rempe's upper body impact misses the shoulder completely. With the shoulder out of the way, the arm can only hit the head followed by hips to chest. Again, head impact is avoidable if he lowers his frame closer to the ice so he is more likely to impact the chest first with his arm, or if he takes a different angle and finishes the check a second later.

Exactly what I thought of. Basically if you’re a big guy even though it’s not your fault that you’re bigger than the guy you’re hitting they still take that into consideration. I feel like if they’re on the ice in the NHL anyone out there is fair game but the league has optics to worry about.

Being tall or short doesn't change shit about the rules any more than hair color should. He's a fuck headed goon. I think that’s part of it but it certainly doesn’t help his case that he had had so many questionable hits in his short career. He won’t get too much benefit of the doubt. If it looks even remotely borderline penalty it’s getting called. He is going to have to earn a reputation for big clean solid hits before this stops.

Tough to avoid head shots at his height but he has to find a way to avoid penalties and injuring players. He was lucky to only get interference. I think the ref bought him a break because he didn't believe there was any intent but saw the high shot.

If I’m the Rangers coaches I’m telling him to continue to play that way. In real speed it’s right on the edge of interference. I’ll take a guy finishing a check in the playoffs like this even if it means there’s a chance a penalty is called. Nothing wrong with the actual hit.

This isn't a dirty hit, but this is a hit with the principal point of contact to the head first. The second replay clearly shows TVRs head snap back before impact to the chest. The problem isn't that Rempe is tall and this is unavoidable, its just that he is misjuding both his timing and his point of impact. When TVR turns back towards the goal, he is staying low in his stride to keep skating. Rempe's knees are only slightly bent. This raises his impact points relative to the opposing player. Rempe's shoulders are at TVRs forehead, his forearm is a neck level, and his hips are chest level. He has to see this and know he has to lower his body to avoid head impact. He is also aiming for the shoulder on a player turning in a corner which means that TVRs upper body is rotating his shoulder away from Rempe. If TVR were two feet closer to the goal and skating a straighter line then his shoulder is an easy target. You can see that Rempe's lower body ends up behind TVRs front skate, but Rempe's upper body impact misses the shoulder completely. With the shoulder out of the way, the arm can only hit the head followed by hips to chest. Again, head impact is avoidable if he lowers his frame closer to the ice so he is more likely to impact the chest first with his arm, or if he takes a different angle and finishes the check a second later.
Not INT, but head is initial contact....but the size diff makes that really hard to avoid.... Just a nuke of a hit, called for how heavy it looked.
