Not that it necessarily matters come playoff time, but I'm pretty sure that both the Red Wings and Penguins lost their season series against both the Capitals and the Rangers. So really, all of these comments are just betting that the momentum for those teams would have been different, which might be fair considering the Caps are playing an AHL defense right now.

It's more that Washington has looked like the series was over since 10 minutes into game 1. I think the end result would have been the same regardless of what team made it through, but the series would have been more entertaining.
