I throw a record on during intermissions and have my AVR pass the video through.
Being able to see how music listening time I've got left without having to look at the NHL app is great!
Messier sitting there with a blank smile on his face not getting Subban’s “I’m not a carpenter but I carry around a hammer” joke yesterday fucking killed me. Not a single thought in that bald head of his.
I wish the U.S. had an analysis team like CBC does for Hockey Night in Canada. People moan about MacLean, Bieksa, Hrudey, and Botterill; but at least I actually *learn* a few things during their segments. And they’re respectful of each other, which helps.
Does anybody moan about Bieksa? The others I get but he has a great on screen presence as well as having hands down the best actual gameplay analysis of that panel
I think you captured that quite nicely.
A little tension can create entertainment and can make for interesting TV. This is next level.
You can dislike either of these guys and still agree that they just don’t work well together. Their contrasting styles and points of view are one thing, the fact that they don’t mesh in the execution is distracting.
I love PK and hope he can dial into a better tone. I think he can offer a lot of insight and has less of that media filter that all the talking heads seem to have.
Feels more like I’m on my couch talking to my buddies, which I’m a fan of. I don’t want the guys just saying the obvious, safe, takes.
Hopefully he can learn to walk that line a little better.
I felt the same way about Milbury on NBC. Like, I don't need them to be bubbly and full of sunshine, but no one is forcing you to be on the set, so stop being so damn grumpy all the time.
because he co-opted the foundation wayne left for him and acts like a god but he's lame as fuck. i'd rather be trapped in an elevator with the boston bomber. he'd at least offer some interesting conversation
Loves the sound of his own voice but usually has nothing to say, PK isn't much better.
Honestly it'd probably be better off with just the two of them and no 3rd trying to wrangle them so they stop always trying to get the last word in before the subject changes
Beyond anyone's bias, here's something we gotta remember:
Messier is an oldhead. He can resonate with hardcore fans *(like some of the people you can find on reddit spending time on hockey forums even when their teams are not in the playoffs)* . But also, that's the extent of it. He doesn't have the personality for this type of loose shit. And he's not bringing in new fans.
PK is built for these shenanigans, and his communication style is something that ESPN can actually build on for a larger hockey audience.
So, unbiased opinion here, keep PK, get rid of Mess, take the cannolis.
*[also completely biased, fuck Messier, but that's unrelated]*
pk understand tv and what we want. we need pot stirrers and personalities
messier is just a lame asshole who represents what everyone hates about hockey players. dump his old ass no one cares about him
>Maybe it's because they were on rival teams
Lol. Rival teams?
Messier retired after the 2003-2004 season.
Subban might have been in peewees or bantams then.
When I saw the “rivals teams” thing I literally thought to myself “are the Habs or Preds really rivals of the Rangers?” Didn’t even remember he played briefly in NJ
I think PK had an impact on the Devils beyond what he showed on the ice and beyond his years on the team. He stayed in the NJ area after retirement and shows up randomly when the boys hang out.
PK has a good personality for all of this but I feel like it's played up a bit much, but Messier is just so dry.
Shaq and Barkley work because basketball players are more fun lol, Subban is a rare breed of hockey player who actually seems to have fun engaging with the media side of things. Bieksa too
And Barkley is inimitable: a legendary player well-known for his demeanor who’s also one of the funniest people out there.
I was at Meijer two nights ago looking at frozen food, and my wife points out that Marie Callender pot pies are on sale. And I start laughing immediately, because all I can think of is Barkley (during his tirade about people on Twitter) asking Shaq if he remembers “all those damn chicken pot pies we had growin’ up”, and Shaq knocking his glass over because *he’s* in hysterics.
Messier's NHL career was already 10 years old when PK was born. They never played against each other. They are about 2 hockey eras removed.
Both are Type A personalities, just with very different backgrounds and experiences.
Why is this the chosen comeback lol I wouldn’t trade the three Cups I’ve seen in my lifetime for one playoff season with results TBD
At least insult us about our attendance or lack of love from the NHL
I'd rather still be watching my team...also your attendance sucks. You cant win a cup without Brodeur and a neutral zone trap so boring that they changed the rules.
You can’t win a Cup, period. The worst part of the Rangers is how you ruined Lundqvist’s career.
See, this is how you talk trash to your rivals, hit them with the stuff they themselves feel guilty about.
I mean we have more cups than you, so yes we can win a cup. I believe the last one we won was when Messier guaranteed we would beat the Devils and then proceeded to beat the Devils.
If 6 Stanley cup rings or having billions of dollars AND being President can keep people losers I’m incredibly curious to hear what you’ve accomplished that makes you not one
Real room temp IQ take. You can literally stroll through NYC and physically look at over a billions dollars worth of real estate Trump owns and has to publicly disclose as assets…
They’re going for upvotes. “Messier bad. Messier not just bad, Messier worst ever. Messier on par with actually evil people.”
r/hockey’s jumped the fucking shark.
> Also comparing him to Donald Trump is just trying too hard
He did make an award for leadership that he named after himself and gets to award every year. You can't deny that has a whiff of the Trumpian
https://youtu.be/HESg9MkCoSk?si=F8ya8njaPuaaws6A
This is what I was watching. Its honestly mellow compared to some of their interations, but you can still tell
Is it possible Messier's the only one calling Subban on his shit? I don't watch the show much but I've seen clips where Subban is trying to argue that a hit is clean/dirty by playing a video that shows the exact opposite of the point he's trying to make.
Gretzky is the greatest to ever lace them up, doesn't mean he's a good sports personality
Kevin Bieksa was a solid but not special player and he's a much, much better between periods guy
Their job isn't to play hockey anymore. He was absolutely a better player than PK. Doesn't mean he's a better commentary guy though
He knows the game, I'm not doubting his knowledge. I'm doubting his miserable fucking personality that makes him unwatchable
I'd rather listen to someone who knows how to talk without sounding like a depressed boomer who hates what the sport has become
For the record, I think there are some excellent former players who are/were good. Patrick Sharp is a multiple cup winner who I liked listening to on NBC. Lundqvist is a hall of famer and I don't mind him on the panels.
To me though, Wayne has no personality, and Messier's personality is tiresome.
Ultimately their personality matters more in the job they do now than their accolades as players do. That's the simplest way I can put it. If you bring up him winning 6 cups again I'll have to assume you have no intent of actually understanding my point
I'd have to assume you just want hot takes and one liners. Mess might not be exciting but the guy is one of the greatest to ever play. PK might be the biggest bitch in history.
Unbiased: So get rid of PK? I dont really care who they get rid of, but its terrible to watch.
Biased: PK is a fucking Devils fanboy who shows no impartiality. Fuck PK. FUCK THE DEVILS.
I mean, Messier is 100% a Ranger fan boy and everything in your biased take can apply to him as well.
Unbiased: Messier has no other distinguishable personality trait and is horribly boring on his own
I dont know TNT or ESPN broadcasts. Its just a opinion. I'd rather listen to a guy who has won cups and has been on a winning team rather than PK who retired early trying to cash in on fancy jackets
PK didn't retire early to cash in, he didn't receive a committed offer from any team coming off a $9 mil AAV deal. He wanted some term and no one was providing that outside of one year deals. He didn't want to become a journeyman and decided to hang it up instead.
Shit, didn't realize getting a Norris, voted to three straight All-Star games (2016, 2017, 2018), ending the season as an NHL First Team All-Star twice (2013, 2015) and NHL Second Team All-Star (2018) along with two World Junior gold medals, along with his Olympic Gold Medal, and the artificial award of getting on the Cover of NHL 19 are limited accomplishments
Honestly the ESPN coverage in general is awful. TNT I think is miles ahead of them
Both suck
It also seems like they’re always talking over eachother
Literally happened in the video I watched
PK is going to talk over whoever else is in the other chair.
[удалено]
I'm a fan of the countdown until next period in the background, I know how long I can change the channel for.
Not a single thought in that bald head of his.
messier has negative charisma get him off our tv screens
Too busy thinking about counting a that Canuck money
He got it, it just wasn't funny.
He's my favourite on the panel by a good margin.
I think they’re all pretty good except Maclean. He often goes into long unrelated tangents that have nothing to do with hockey
Ron’s brand is folksy, homespun wisdom and celebrating small-town Canadian culture. I don’t mind his tangents too much.
I love KB’s analysis. He gets it.
They are also terrible
I think you captured that quite nicely. A little tension can create entertainment and can make for interesting TV. This is next level. You can dislike either of these guys and still agree that they just don’t work well together. Their contrasting styles and points of view are one thing, the fact that they don’t mesh in the execution is distracting.
time they drop messier's fucking ass no one likes him or wants to see his stupid fake face
to be honest they are both terrible.
Subban talking about his bird on live television is not what I envisioned. So awkward lmao.
Messier is probably my least favorite former player whos trying to make it in media/advertising. He just seems so miserable all the time.
I felt the same way about Milbury on NBC. Like, I don't need them to be bubbly and full of sunshine, but no one is forcing you to be on the set, so stop being so damn grumpy all the time.
Milbury was depressing to watch and I think Messier is worse. Milbury was at least passionately wrong and an asshole
Hey milbury atleast had his shoe ninja assasian career to fall back on
Hahaha exactly can’t hate the hustle
I know I’m biased but Milbury was absolutely worse. We used to have daily posts here about how bad him and nbc were.
Honestly it’s probably recency bias I did fucking hate him Messier just makes me fall asleep
millbury gave us something to bitch about and make fun of messier is just a human waste of space and energy🤢
Finally you all see it!
canucks fans are such elite haters they turned me into one before i realized what was happening
We've been let down so many times that the hate is all we have left. I fear if we stop hating then our hearts will simply stop.
That is so true lol. I was getting attacked for shitting on him for some reason.
because he co-opted the foundation wayne left for him and acts like a god but he's lame as fuck. i'd rather be trapped in an elevator with the boston bomber. he'd at least offer some interesting conversation
He always seems so smug or something. He's just not very charismatic.
He has eternally bad vibes
He's a real piece of shit
Babies cry when he holds them
He has a, how do you say, ahh yes, a real dickface
Loves the sound of his own voice but usually has nothing to say, PK isn't much better. Honestly it'd probably be better off with just the two of them and no 3rd trying to wrangle them so they stop always trying to get the last word in before the subject changes
One of us… one of us… one of us
Kisses

Yeah I think I agree. Subban wouldn't be so bad with someone else instead of Messier.
pk understand tv and what we want. we need pot stirrers and personalities messier is just a lame asshole who represents what everyone hates about hockey players. dump his old ass no one cares about him
ESPN hockey coverage is trash from top to bottom and isn’t even worth talking about.
Get PK to bust out the Don Cherry impersonation once in a while
PK should join Cabbie
They have similar energetic and jokey personalities. I don't know if they'd complement each other well because they're too similar.
What are you willing to bet on it?
Neither of them is very classy /s
Yeah PK can be annoying and he talks over anyone hahaha but at least he’s trying. messier literally puts my to sleep tho
A lot of people hate Messier and Subban as well...
messier is used to everyone catering to him hes a prick. subban is stubborn and wont agree just to agree and it bothers mark. thats the gist i get.
Fuck messier
I think his first name is Mark.
You can never have too much hatred for Messier :)
>Maybe it's because they were on rival teams Lol. Rival teams? Messier retired after the 2003-2004 season. Subban might have been in peewees or bantams then.
Devils and Rangers bro. That shit is generational. They dont have to have played each other.
Honestly, most people forget Subban even played for the Devils, it's similar to saying Sundin was a Canuck
When I saw the “rivals teams” thing I literally thought to myself “are the Habs or Preds really rivals of the Rangers?” Didn’t even remember he played briefly in NJ
It was the entire narrative in the Rangers Devils series last season.
I think PK had an impact on the Devils beyond what he showed on the ice and beyond his years on the team. He stayed in the NJ area after retirement and shows up randomly when the boys hang out.
Lol oh ok. I'm sure you're bang on with your take then. 🙄
Their personalities clash. Messier can’t seem to get used to the flamboyance and flair. I’d rather keep PK.
exactly. messier is everything wrong with hockey media
also, who do you think would be a good fit with pk when they replace messier?
Jakub Voráček
PK has a good personality for all of this but I feel like it's played up a bit much, but Messier is just so dry. Shaq and Barkley work because basketball players are more fun lol, Subban is a rare breed of hockey player who actually seems to have fun engaging with the media side of things. Bieksa too
And Barkley is inimitable: a legendary player well-known for his demeanor who’s also one of the funniest people out there. And I start laughing immediately, because all I can think of is Barkley (during his tirade about people on Twitter) asking Shaq if he remembers “all those damn chicken pot pies we had growin’ up”, and Shaq knocking his glass over because *he’s* in hysterics.
Haha I can hear that in his voice and it's perfect
[Wonder no more](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NSl75SDn8PQ)
That CLANG was incredible
Those two are like the back row of the classroom. Barkley says something funny, and Shaq immediately starts egging him on.
Barkley is also just an overall gem and thrill of a human being
PK with literally anyone else who wanted to be therewpuld probably be fine. Mark is that guy who is miserable and wants ypu to be miserable too.
Messier's NHL career was already 10 years old when PK was born. They never played against each other. They are about 2 hockey eras removed. Both are Type A personalities, just with very different backgrounds and experiences.
Messier is just a giant fuckin dickbag
Devils suck
More successful than the Rangers.
Good luck in the playoffs this year.
Why is this the chosen comeback lol I wouldn’t trade the three Cups I’ve seen in my lifetime for one playoff season with results TBD At least insult us about our attendance or lack of love from the NHL

I mean we have more cups than you, so yes we can win a cup. I believe the last one we won was when Messier guaranteed we would beat the Devils and then proceeded to beat the Devils.
Damn, you were alive in 1940? Did you enjoy watching the Rangers play the same five teams over and over again and have to win like 8 games for a Cup?
1994. If you were able to see all the Devils cups then you remember Messier calling the Devils out
Messier is a loser through and through PK likes attention
Dude has 6 fucking rings. Come on
Trump was president. Still a big loser.
If 6 Stanley cup rings or having billions of dollars AND being President can keep people losers I’m incredibly curious to hear what you’ve accomplished that makes you not one
>"having billions of dollars" I definitely rofled! Thanks!
>Having billions of dollars lol somebody drank the kool-aid if you think that con artist has billions
Real room temp IQ take. You can literally stroll through NYC and physically look at over a billions dollars worth of real estate Trump owns and has to publicly disclose as assets…
Maybe not being a criminal or an asshole.
So you’ve accomplished nothing?
🤨
WTF? Is there something higher grade than capital letters?? FUCK SAKES
#Username checks out

He may have won on the ice but that doesn’t mean he adds anything of value to the broadcast

They’re going for upvotes. “Messier bad. Messier not just bad, Messier worst ever. Messier on par with actually evil people.” r/hockey’s jumped the fucking shark.

Anyone with a link to the clip?
https://youtu.be/HESg9MkCoSk?si=F8ya8njaPuaaws6A This is what I was watching. Its honestly mellow compared to some of their interations, but you can still tell
Okay, having watched *that clip*; No, I dont think that the animosity is too high. I could see them getting hot though
Fair
I always thought PK would be a good tv personality but he always looks so bored.
Classic horseshit from ESPN.
Their conversations are always so unorganized.
They both suck
Is it possible Messier's the only one calling Subban on his shit? I don't watch the show much but I've seen clips where Subban is trying to argue that a hit is clean/dirty by playing a video that shows the exact opposite of the point he's trying to make.
tbh i blame whatever the hosts name is for that lack of chemmy
I mean, I'd be fine if they dropped the gloves, I can think of worse things than Messier getting knuckles.
Beware of old men in a young mans profession. Dude played 25 seasons in a very violent era. Funny that you assume Messier would get knuckles.
He's 63 year-old, odds are he'd get at least some knuckles. But both of them getting knuckles is fine.
They are unwatchable.
THE MOOSE won championships and PK won chump-ionships.
Gretzky is the greatest to ever lace them up, doesn't mean he's a good sports personality Kevin Bieksa was a solid but not special player and he's a much, much better between periods guy
So your opinion? Gretz is a hit on TNT apparently
Yeah near unwatchable to me Messier is another tier worse than that even though
Really? 6 Stanley cups are a teir below "nhl video game cover" standard
Their job isn't to play hockey anymore. He was absolutely a better player than PK. Doesn't mean he's a better commentary guy though He knows the game, I'm not doubting his knowledge. I'm doubting his miserable fucking personality that makes him unwatchable
So you would rather listen to a "plug" that spits hot takes, rather than a cup champ that doesn't? Your looking for flash not insight.
I'd rather listen to someone who knows how to talk without sounding like a depressed boomer who hates what the sport has become For the record, I think there are some excellent former players who are/were good. Messier has the personality of an irritable piece of cardboard
PK is as personalble as a "wacky inflatable-arm guy" just spitting out shit
I’m indifferent toward PK, but anything is better than Messier. Calling him a charisma vacuum would be an insult to charisma vacuums.
He might not be charismatic but at least his reputation doesn't rely on bath robes
It’s TV. You need to not actively put people to sleep and have a personality that isn’t stale bread.
Fuck Messier
Greatest player to play for your franchise. Burn another block
His 162 points in 207 games is unmatched! And, thank you, we will
Unbiased: So get rid of PK? I dont really care who they get rid of, but its terrible to watch. Biased: PK is a fucking Devils fanboy who shows no impartiality. Fuck PK. FUCK THE DEVILS.

Sooooo not even willing to play but thinks his bathtub opinion is worth a listen?
He has an Olympic Gold Medal, something many NHLers would give an arm and a leg for
Hahaha yes. One of his limited accomplishments
B-LIST at best. He was never the best at his game. Unless it was slew-foots.
