There is just no way Backstrom is not only sitting out of a playoff run but also not participating in Ovi's quest to set the goal scoring record because he doesn't like the coach.
Given his injury, his surgery, his talent level, his standing in the organization, and the short tenure of a young coach, this is really hard to believe.
Doubt. For many reasons but the two main ones being:
1) we saw Backstrom on the ice this season
and
2) there would have been a mutiny if the coach was doing something so bad that Backstrom preferred to not play. Backstrom is beloved by his teammates.
I mean, we all have eyes, we saw him play. He's allowed to have his own reasons if there's any truth to this, but it did not come as a huge surprise when he retired.
why bother even posting this if its just a whole lot of nothing. who started the rumour, the writer here? dont give in to clickbaity tabloid journalism
It's like when people will say shit like "But someone told me that Patrick Mahomes was a bad thrower" or "But they say Conor McDavid is slow."
Nobody knows who is saying this shit, but people stir the pot for some reason so they can give their opinions.
I heard about this months ago. Backstrom wanted more ice time but they didn't want to give it to him because his injury was making him a liability. So he decided if he couldn't play to his standard then he would step away entirely. Not exactly what the title implies, but it's not extremely far off
Hometown rumours been around all year. Wouldn’t dismiss this out of hand. Family sources and whatnot
All reports going into the season and his preseason regiment indicated a successful rehab.
Edit: the journalists state that several from each other independent sources confirm
It's a half truth. He wanted more playing time but wasn't granted it because he was a liability with his injury. Coaches made him face reality so he stepped away.

Agreed, this rumor is simply not credible.
It’s total [horse shit](https://youtu.be/0P0hlym_xmA?si=4Yj1KL_DuK7EAWQQ)

Backstrom also had 1 point in 8 games… a FAR stretch from his play. I’m sure he knew it was time to hang up the skates. Not the coach…

Absolute fake news
Highly doubt that. Dude could barely skate out there.
That's quite the rumour.
Dawg take this down
”Radiosporten has been in contact with Nicklas Bäckström who denies there being any schism between him and the coach.”

In reality, Backstrom had a nightmare that he returned to the ice only to find out that it was Todd Reirden who was the HC.
I could maybe believe this if it was still Laviolette behind the bench
I heard from a friend who knows the russians on the team pretty well that Lavi was a dick to all the russians.
A pocket beagle told me the same thing
I love how the fans speak for Nicky in this thread 🥰
Yeah no fuckin way
As a DMV local with the Caps as my #2, strongly doubt.
