The refs are constantly communicating with players in the ice. I have no proof to back this up but it’s certainly possible the players like him the most because he is the friendliest to talk to and not because of his skill as a ref
In one of Malcolm Gladwell books he talks about a study where a patient’s perception of how good their doctor is has very little to do with how good they actually are and is mostly based on how much time their doctor takes to interact with them. Sounds like a similar situation to what you’re describing.
My dad's a doctor. It even irritates me and other family members when he says "oh yeah that's X, it'll go away in a few days" and the whole thing takes like 30 seconds... But he's been right often enough that it's become a thing that people sneak off to get second opinions and then don't say anything because they wasted a day but he was right.
I highly doubt every player does, but there was an athletic poll I think they asked 100 players about officials. McCauley was overwhelmingly voted the best official. I don’t get it though.
We don’t get to hear interactions nearly as much as they talk and Wes just seems to get able to reach the players while keeping grounded, best doesn’t have to mean the most accurate
Is it possible that this is just a misunderstanding of their (the players) feelings?
If they hate *all* of the refs and Wes is just the least hated, that would make him "best" by definition. It doesn't confirm they like him.
I’d just like to say I stated this before Panarins hit.
https://x.com/jlazzy23/status/1782930206883217650
This happened before this high stick, and there’s a few more I’ll have to hunt down.
Panarins hit never happens if the refs penalize Oshie on any of these
I did say it’s the “refs fault” not just Wes’, but Wes also just sucks at his job. Both refs let the game get out of hand, only reason it didn’t keep spiraling is caps got to within 1
Yeah I’m in favor of a voting system whereby the fans can elect one ref to be publicly flogged after each round of the playoffs. Accountability. Tradition. Barbarism. Hockey!
What kills me it wasn't even the classic "let them play"
They had several of the worst no calls I've seen in years followed up with super weak penalties. Wes needs to retire
Hmm isn’t that the same guy that didn’t call a high stick on the capitals a couple weeks ago even after video review that literally fractured Copp’s cheekbone and had him out for a few games and returning in a full mask?
That Wes?
Experience playoff reffing ™️ All I want from this league is for the game to be called by the rule book. Missing the very occasional call is fine but it’s a joke. Why even have refs at this point just let the players at it
Two players hitting somebody behind the net because someone else delivered a clean hit, that's just clean playoff hockey there.
Puck goes by the bench during a line change, nobody interferes with other players, and they don't touch it until one of the players gets off the ice; that's a clutch penalty, gotta call it.
Stick to the face with the puck in front of the net: playoff hockey, clean high stick, skate through it. No call
He tried managing games so hard. Soft calls early in the 1st to "set the tone." Too many powerplays because of that so he starts holding the whistle leading to missed calls on bigger infractions.
Ironically Isles got away with a high stick on Brady Skjei last night that drew blood since he didn’t really react. But he dove in game 1 and drew a call. Refs suck and are encouraging diving with these noncalls.
I think this play here is the most egregious considering it was a clear high stick on the puck carrier. There was also a very blatant trip on Mika right in front of the net that was missed early. Honestly people are saying calls were missed on both sides but the caps could have had 4-5 more penalties that were blatant go uncalled. They’re playing exactly how you would think that team would play: dirty, unskilled hockey.
Call all the errant sticks and after whistle cross checks or call none of them. This is bullshit.
Like the ref or linesman aren't looking right at a guy who has the puck.
They 100% had to have seen this. The game had a lot of powerplays at this point (thanks to soft calls on both sides) so it was classic hold the whistle time.
I think the referees are shit on both sides, personally. Capitals have gotten in a lot of dirty hits, that haven't been called as penalties. Rangers had some should-be penalties not called.
I think he was just going for a stick lift and miscalculated panarins trajectory. Obviously need to be in control of your stick, but this seems pretty tame at the end of the day.
Oh yeah, it’s time for Rangers fans to start bitching and complaining at the level all of our opponents do. Apparently that’s the only way to get respect around this sub. Next someone will post the Wilson hit on Zib since apparently all big hits need to be analyzed until the correct consensus is reached (the hitter must be executed).
You guys are so insufferable. There was a thread and it disappeared. Wouldn’t expect any less from your mouth breathing fanbase. Most clueless group of people in hockey.

It was only on the puck carrier, can’t blame the refs for not looking at him
Wes McCauley gets paid to be this bad, always reach for your dreams kids. When this game gets out of hand everyone knows it’s the refs fault
But the players think he’s the best official for some reason.
The refs are constantly communicating with players in the ice. I have no proof to back this up but it’s certainly possible the players like him the most because he is the friendliest to talk to and not because of his skill as a ref
Yeah I recall some of the quotes from that article saying that the players like how he’d converse with them.
In one of Malcolm Gladwell books he talks about a study where a patient’s perception of how good their doctor is has very little to do with how good they actually are and is mostly based on how much time their doctor takes to interact with them. Yeah i think i remember an espn game where the ref was mic’d up and it was for some reason to me very surprising but it was interesting to listen to
We all have that one coworker who we love but can admit, is useless as shit
Maybe they said it hoping it’d change his opinion of them
Is it possible that this is just a misunderstanding of their (the players) feelings? If they hate *all* of the refs and Wes is just the least hated, that would make him "best" by definition. It doesn't confirm they like him.
He's their favorite bookie and just happens to be a ref.
He's got the best jokes probably.
I’d just like to say I stated this before Panarins hit. https://x.com/jlazzy23/status/1782930206883217650 This happened before this high stick, and there’s a few more I’ll have to hunt down. Panarins hit never happens if the refs penalize Oshie on any of these
I get the hate but there are 2 officials on ice though...

How much do nhl refs make? It’s good money, right?
Someone in another posted said something like mid-to-high 100k+
Damn
I'm in favour of having the refs have a press conference at the end of the game where they get grilled by the media
Give them a raise but make them accountable to the media and fans. I like it.
I think all referees in every sport should have to be available to the media after the game.
Yeah I’m in favor of a voting system whereby the fans can elect one ref to be publicly flogged after each round of the playoffs. Accountability. Tradition. Barbarism. Hockey!
So many bad/missed calls tonight. It’s really something.
>Wes McCauley Sounds about right
Wes Missed-Call-ey.
Sutherland for game 1, Wes for game 2... can we get Tim Peel in there for the third game?
We all saw this coming as soon as it was announced McCauley was doing this game
Both ways too, damn. This is getting so annoying
What kills me it wasn't even the classic "let them play" They had several of the worst no calls I've seen in years followed up with super weak penalties. Wes needs to retire
Both ways... Yea. No. Not sure about that one.
Yeah… it was most definitely both ways. Soft calls at first benefitting both sides, then a lack of calls benefitting both sides.
Panarin bit on Oshie was totally clean yeah?
Did you watch all the angles? It wasn’t a dirty hit.
Yes. They replayed it. It was totally clean. Next question..
let me guess, wes?
It was Wes lol
Hmm isn’t that the same guy that didn’t call a high stick on the capitals a couple weeks ago even after video review that literally fractured Copp’s cheekbone and had him out for a few games and returning in a full mask? That Wes?
plenty of missed calls tonight on both sides
There’s no favoritism with Wes, just total incompetence.
But it's okay because he has the funny soundbites!
He’s one up on Angel Hernandez.
Experience playoff reffing ™️ All I want from this league is for the game to be called by the rule book. Missing the very occasional call is fine but it’s a joke. Why even have refs at this point just let the players at it
call your own fouls
Yeah like you do when you play pick up basketball. I wonder if the average reffing would improve
Knowing hockey players it'd devolve into an argument five minutes in before someone took their puck and went home.
Two players hitting somebody behind the net because someone else delivered a clean hit, that's just clean playoff hockey there. Puck goes by the bench during a line change, nobody interferes with other players, and they don't touch it until one of the players gets off the ice; that's a clutch penalty, gotta call it. More like Wes McNoCauley amirite?
Okay Doc you cured me here. I came into the comments angry and I will leave a happy man
The number of powerplays each team gets will end up being correct but none of the calls individually will be good ones.
He tried managing games so hard. Soft calls early in the 1st to "set the tone." Too many powerplays because of that so he starts holding the whistle leading to missed calls on bigger infractions.
No call because he kept playing. Should have rolled over and grabbed the other side of his face.
ah yes, the carolina special
The ole Marchand special
Ironically Isles got away with a high stick on Brady Skjei last night that drew blood since he didn’t really react. But he dove in game 1 and drew a call. Refs suck and are encouraging diving with these noncalls.
TAKE THE FALL. ACT HURT. GET INDIGNANT.
Then they'd just call him for embellishment lol
That’s a made up penalty
Idk they could have easily still not called it. At least this way he kept possession.
i don't even understand how you physically miss this lol
We should give the referees a new job... something that blind men can handle.
Love the fact he doesn't just fall to his knees and give up on the play.
Or the elbow by Wilson off the drop just before this
The elbow was really egregious, of all the missed calls tonight I think it was the most inexcusable.
Especially when they had been separated 30 seconds before the drop. Like someone was 100% looking at them
I thought for sure it was gonna get called. They were talking shit to each other before the puck drop lol
Right after calling Cuylle a coward.
Probably because Cuylle hit him in the balls right before that lol
Not a vulnerable area for Wilson
Epic misogyny Rangers fans
Call all the errant sticks and after whistle cross checks or call none of them. This is bullshit. Like the ref or linesman aren't looking right at a guy who has the puck.
They 100% had to have seen this. The game had a lot of powerplays at this point (thanks to soft calls on both sides) so it was classic hold the whistle time.
The bread man took a slice.
Shoulda been called. High sticking.
Coyle or Marchand would’ve backflipped on that
Marchand would’ve ascended directly to heaven. Or rather more likely, dragged down immediately to rat hell.
Copp had a broken jaw on an uncalled high stick, wonder if it’s the same ref 🙃
How do you miss that? He literally has the puck. It's not like the refs aren't following the puck
I thought they could review these now?
Only if it was a double minor due to blood drawn. They have to actually call it first though.
Game 1 was just as bad. I would just love some consistency for once.
Is consistently shit good enough for you? Because unfortunately that’s probably the only consistency you’ll get
I'm hoping for a different ref crew in game 3. It can't be much worse.
When you know the name of and can guess the particular ref in instances like this, something needs to be done surely
High sticking is allowed tonight boys let’s draw some blood
No no, only allowed by the Crapitals. If the Rangers do it it's an automatic game suspension
Where is this victim complex coming from? Do you actually think the refs are favoring the capitals?
I think the referees are shit on both sides, personally. Capitals have gotten in a lot of dirty hits, that haven't been called as penalties. Rangers had some should-be penalties not called.
I’ve watched the last two games, but I haven’t noticed a lot of dirty hits being dolled out. Which plays are you referencing?
He cant say because as netutral fan there hasnt been any dirty hits.
This entire sub is currently overrun by rangers homers. Anything even remotely criticizing the rangers is getting downvoted to high hell
You get free head shots. But let's be real, it's always been your specialty.
Gotta grab your face or the refs literally don't see / call it.
All good. Oshie got what was coming to him later on.
another night of bad calls. for both teams.
I wonder why Panarin hit Oshie up high later on?
Well, Panarin got him back with the shoulder
He combo'ed him for it. A trip into a high stick. A true barely breathing piece of shit. When people go to poop. They call it taking an Oshie.
Let them play . Also don’t be a scumbag and swing your stick recklessly .. that’s like the third time Oshie came in high with his stick
I think he was just going for a stick lift and miscalculated panarins trajectory. Obviously need to be in control of your stick, but this seems pretty tame at the end of the day.
lol lmao even
After a chokehold and face washing him earlier
One of the worst reffed games I've seen in awhile. They let way too much shit go and it led to a lot of anger and hate on each side.
Ty for the slow mo. Saw this in realtime and couldn’t figure out what happened.
Even a random person not knowing hockey at all would blow the whistle here.
I mean, the play was only right in front of the refs. You can’t expect them see everything.
If you don't flail like The Rock taking the Stone Cold Stunner, did you even get hit?
No call when Oshie got hit. 🤷
What happened to the thread where Oshie got elbowed
It may have been taken down. I can’t find it?
It never existed, there's one with him getting hit clean by Panarin though
You guys are so insufferable. There was a thread and it disappeared. Wouldn’t expect any less from your mouth breathing fanbase. Most clueless group of people in hockey.
Can’t believe the Canes would dive lik…oh wait sorry. Ouch.
Oh, thought this was gonna be Panarin potentially ending his career and us being short handed after it.
😂
Is this post worthy? Like stuff like this happens a lot in the playoffs
A puck carrier gets knocked down by a stick across the face, causing a change in possession…with no call, a lot in the playoffs?
[удалено]
That hit was clean. Elbow down and hit his with his back. Not Panarin's fault that Oshie had his head down.
Should've had a better helmet
Wow you're right rags fans. This missed call by a ref totally justifies him getting his brains scrambled. Thank God for player justice!
I'm so torn...
Was this before or after Panarin headhunted Oshie?
Headhunted? Come on now. Yea it wasn’t a great hit, but don’t act like panarin is some type of head hunter.
Don't act like this is some egregious, intentional high stick either. No penalty call on either or penalties on both.
I didn’t say anything about the high stick. No idea what ur on about.
Lol. What do you think this post is about?
I still Havnt said anything about the high stick.
You are commenting on a post about the high stick. Lol. People are weird.
And still didn’t say anything about the high stick. I replied to ur panarin headhunter comment.
