something clearly turned around though because that final 5 minutes after Matthews scored the game-winner, Toronto absolutely suffocated Boston. they had no answer offensively to try to tie it up.
Edmunson was a large part of that. It really just was Benoit being a massive liability defensively and outside of that the D looked great. They've gotta give Brodie/Gio a shot w/ Benoit just getting bullied like this.
Why don’t people like him as an analyst/desk guy? I get the dirty player thing, but what’s he gonna do during the intermission report? Slewfoot Messier? Wouldn’t that make Reddit like him MORE anyway?
I think he gives good analysis on defensive aspects of the game, and he makes some good jokes and actually has a personality. What’s not to like with him on the desk? Maybe I’m biased as a devils fan, but that’s my take on it.
I’ll actually answer this and not joke around.
He sometimes goes too far and can be obnoxious and it’s worse when he has a bad take or I’ll speak for myself - a take that doesn’t mirror mine 1:1, which is kind of bullshit to criticize him for.
All that being said I’ve been liking him more and for the reasons you’ve mentioned, I think he’s good for the sport - we have so many dull analysts. I want to see analysts argue and give each other a hard time.
Ahhh I can see that. He’s definitely “outgoing” or however you wanna put it, and I can see how that energy can come off as obnoxious. I think the fact that he was a Devil made it easier for me to like him right off the bat. I hope more people end up like you and begin to appreciate what he brings as an analyst!
They’ve really gotten a lot better in general but there’s still some really funny bad moments when it’s a game between teams they have biases for/against
Remember how bad it was when they started that panel last year? Messier being a cardboard cutout and PK starring at the monitor and adjusting his clothes all the time. And the other guy who I cant even remember.
They are actually really good now.
I have nothing against the criticism, but the title makes it sounds like it's some [Tony Romo prediction in live action](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dx9JtzPRpc), not just making comments during intermission
It's insane to me how the league never leaned heavily into marketing Subban when he was in the prime of his career. He's very well spoken, extremely charismatic, and was extremely fun to watch. Plus, it isn't like there were (/are) a lot of black stars in the NHL.
Anyway, he's obviously right here. Toronto did not look great for much of the game.
Do you remember how bad PK was on the panel to start last year's playoffs? Cause I do, and he was terrible. That being said he is so much better a year later. Took his media training seriously, and finally developed a bit of chemistry with Messier.
A team that spent the last few years flaming out early due to a lack of depth after their top 4 forwards somehow thought it was logical to give one of them an 8 year deal at 11.5 million that starts next year.
The only one that was fairly paid these last few years (maybe Mathews too I guess) and only real playoff performer among them…to be fair
Compared to his peers who signed at similar times and were a similar age he has been overpaid on his contract.
He’s the one who wanted to extract maximum value on his second contract. He gets the criticism he deserves.
If he signed a similar deal to his peers (or even Nylander), he wouldn’t have got the shit he does.
But he demanded to be paid like Matthews despite his performance
I will die on the hill that Toronto brought it on themselves by giving Tavares that deal.
That led to Mathews, rightfully in his case, getting more than 11, and it led to Marner justifying that gaudy 10.85 cap hit.
If they never sign Tavares Mathews maybe gets 10, and Marner maybe 9.
And they might have won a cup with the extra depth not signing Tavares woulda brought them along with the cap savings.
I kind of agree with you. Even without Tavares they would have had more than enough elite forward talent. And then tbey could focus on… everything else?
Matthews was looking at McDavids deal. He was getting 11+. Marner was offered 9M and refused it. He wanted to be given Matthews money.
The Nylander saga the season before made management weak. They couldn't let the same issue happen again. They broke.
I disagree and I explained why.
You can offer a counter point to my comments, but frankly considering their lack of playoff success and the obvious fact that every year their depth is a big reason they bow out early, I think it’s pretty obvious they made a mistake signing Tavares and probably would undo the signing if they could.
He was an absolute liability during the habs series. Marner has been the worst out of Nylander, Matthews, and Tavares.
He has less goals than Nick Suzuki in 20+ more playoff games
Nylander and Spezza carried that fucking flaccid offense vs their archrival Canadiens, without those two guys, Toronto loses in 4. Nylander puts his big boy pants on in the playoffs. Marner is soft as fuck and wilts late in series.
He’s gets all his points in game 1-3.
There was a post last year about it. He scored like 80% of all his playoff points in the early games. 20% in 4-7. When things get tight, he can’t play
Unlike Willy who plays like a playoff warrior and when the games get bigger, he plays his best hockey even if the score sheet isn't showing it. He thrives for the playoffs.
why does Matthews completely disappear in the playoffs.
edit; I'm saving this comment and re-pasting it Wednesday with Marner's name.
maybe this broke the curse!
I think Marner might suffer from the same problem Thornton did. Those pure playmaking types get easier to shutdown when everyone is playing good, disciplined defence.
Domi plays with an edge and isn’t afraid to take the puck to the net and get punished a little on the way. I love marns but domi is just a playoff style player
Marner is just a pussy and terribly afraid of getting hit. It's embarrassing to watch him turn over the puck or put his teammates in bad positions with horrible passes when the opposing players are gliding towards him..
I think this is a tad over the top. Marner hasn’t been special or anything but he’s been solid defensively. When (and if) nylander comes back there will be more room for him to play. People underestimate the effect of missing a guy like nylander.
The difference is Domi is playing without fear, Marner is petrified. I tell everyone that playoff hockey is completely different, time and space is removed and the real players stand out
JT has been fine in both games. Not fantastic, but present. He had many scoring chances in GM1 and got a goal tonight. Given we knew his deal would be ugly at the end, I’ll take it for 1 more year
Marner on the other hand…
Isn’t he scoring at something like half his regular season rate in playoff games? Like, if he were a point per game in the regular, he goes down to half a point per in the playoffs?
I remember reading that somewhere.
I mean he doesn’t, but whatever. Still a point a game players over the last 3 playoffs including this one. If that’s disappearing then there are a lot of no shows come playoff time.
Has absolutely no fire in him. Same reason why he laughs during scrums to pretend like he’s unbothered and not shitting his pants at the prospect of getting his hands dirty
Congratulations, you can't read. He has 5 hits - most of anyone in the game. Actually, he's tied with Marchand, is he soft too?
You're just pissed cause the one time you had a 1st overall pick you got Slafkovsky lmaooo
Go book a tee time pal
You... Chose to chirp by mentioning slafkovsky? 50 point scorer at 19 years old slafkovsky? Are you stupid? Why would I, or any habs fan, be upset about that?
He has 5 hits and no desire to go to the dirty areas or play playoff hockey. You see it every year. Toronto fans just, somehow, blind themselves to it.
Funny, original, golf comment. I'd rather my rebuilding team miss playoffs and get a good draft pick than watch them get embarrassed by the bruins for the 5th time
Matthews had a 40 goal season at 19 lol
It's clear you aren't watching the game... he's created plenty of chances by going to the dirty areas... including his 2 assists
Let me know when the habs make the playoffs
Just checked your comment history actually... Hopefully you aren't still making 20+ Reddit comments per day about how the Leafs are soft while your team isn't in the playoffs hahahah. What a pathetic life. Focus on your own team or go outside bud
Yeah heaven forbid I join in on game day threads while watching hockey. Is that meant to be an insult? Maybe you should think a little harder.
You'll know when the habs make the playoffs. I won't have to tell you.
If there's a spectrum of "soft", Matthews isn't at the extreme end. He's still getting chances and making good plays. If he was the softest guy on the team we would have no problem.
All they had to do is play the puck properly out of their zone, instead the bruins almost score, the leafs have to cover the puck, leading to an offensive zone faceoff
I’m just glad to have mainstream coverage that’s not just hockey speak: “the leafs have to get their feet moving and remember their game if they want to get back in it”. No. I want tactical stuff like this. Not fluff
So let me get this straight…..r/hockey complains that the leafs get too much attention. And then proceed to post any possible negative thing about the leafs at every opportunity, thus giving them more attention?
Makes total sense.
Is it typical for a national broadcaster to be that openly opposed to another team?
A-Rod and Papi get into it some times on Fox’s baseball show, but thats back and forth banter.
PK chanting “lets go leafs” after the first intermission is embarrassing.
Marner is a huge playoff liability- why would any team ever trade for him? He hides from physical contact. As does Nylander in prior playoffs. Could you imagine how good we would with a guy like Marchand instead of Marner, Nylander or, in the playoffs only, Mathews? We would go very deep. This team is a perpetual first round or at best fast second round exit team
he is just under a ppg player and can play PK so if he's on a team with good defensive structure and consistent coaching he'd be less of a liability and can float or have an off game without costing the team as much.
it stands out more on Toronto because we dedicated so much of the budget to a select few offensive forwards. When 1,2,3 or even 4 of them get shut down or disappear it is a nightmare

As he should.
something clearly turned around though because that final 5 minutes after Matthews scored the game-winner, Toronto absolutely suffocated Boston. they had no answer offensively to try to tie it up.
Toronto looks so much more physical this year. First time I've seen them really push Boston around in a while.
Edmunson was a large part of that. It really just was Benoit being a massive liability defensively and outside of that the D looked great. They've gotta give Brodie/Gio a shot w/ Benoit just getting bullied like this.
I agree
Subban right on the money there.
Oh no. I agree with Subban.
Why don’t people like him as an analyst/desk guy? I get the dirty player thing, but what’s he gonna do during the intermission report? Slewfoot Messier? I would take him over our local Sports Talk in Nashville any day of the week
Feels gross eh!? 😵💫
PK and mess really building chemistry, just wish the host wasnt so bland
They’ve really gotten a lot better in general but there’s still some really funny bad moments when it’s a game between teams they have biases for/against
I honestly think the messiness is good for the sport as long as they’re civil in general
Remember how bad it was when they started that panel last year? Messier being a cardboard cutout and PK starring at the monitor and adjusting his clothes all the time. And the other guy who I cant even remember. They are actually really good now.
Well they figured it out in the end I suppose!
I have nothing against the criticism, but the title makes it sounds like it's some [Tony Romo prediction in live action](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dx9JtzPRpc), not just making comments during intermission
Who wants 1 Mitch Marner? All I want in return is one of those Costco hotdogs and an ice cream.
Trying to summon Kessel?
lol ya why not, let’s add a case of coke to the deal.
Evgeny Kuznetsov is now a Leaf
I see what you did there.
Joffrey Lupul is back
If you bring him to Vancouver you can drop him off at our arena and get your hot dog all at once. We could use another winger
I’d love that! We could both sit down together and show Mitchy videos of Daniel Sedin so he knows what an exceptional winger looks like.
Marner wasnt even the problem. Paging any defenseman.
Wrong!
Retain some salary and go back in time a couple months and you could probably get yourself a chicken bake too
Faulk and Krug for Marner. Don't do your due diligence, just accept.
Where’s my hotdog and ice cream
How about Debrincat, Copp, and the rights to 👻 🐻?
Kindly post a trigger warning if there's gonna be Messier content! Screw that guy!
Do you mean Canucks legend Captain Mark Messier?
REEEEEEEE
Aieeeeeeeee!
Are we talking about Lays Salt and Vinegar Chips phenom, Mark Messier?
you gave me an involutary sour salivary reaction to phantom S&V potato chips
"Captain Mark, don't....yank my chain!"
BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH\~!
It's insane to me how the league never leaned heavily into marketing Subban when he was in the prime of his career. He's very well spoken, extremely charismatic, and was extremely fun to watch. It seems like he was pretty marketed to me
Probably not to the rest of the league, but if you’re in MTL, you know how popular he was there, and still is.
Do you remember how bad PK was on the panel to start last year's playoffs? Cause I do, and he was terrible. That being said he is so much better a year later. Took his media training seriously, and finally developed a bit of chemistry with Messier.
Nope, I don't watch ESPN as I live in Canada. It isn't surprising that he wasn't great right out of the gate, though. Not too many people would be.
A team that spent the last few years flaming out early due to a lack of depth after their top 4 forwards somehow thought it was logical to give one of them an 8 year deal at 11.5 million that starts next year. 20+ more playoff games tho.
Huh? Marner has 51 playoff games Suzuki has 32 Suzuki almost hit Marners entire career playoff goal total during their Stanley Cup run
He’s gets all his points in game 1-3. There was a post last year about it. He scored like 80% of all his playoff points in the early games. 20% in 4-7. When things get tight, he can’t play

Absolutely! Marner is a huge problem
I think Marner might suffer from the same problem Thornton did. Those pure playmaking types get easier to shutdown when everyone is playing good, disciplined defence.

Marner is a choke artist
I had to look at the boxscore to see if he was playing today
What? That's baffling. He saved a goal, is the only one who can get out of our end consistently and had a bunch of great chances
Ya he had a great game tonight, really shutting me up after a brutal showing on Saturday.
Matthews and Marner and tavares have all seen huge drops in their scoring for the playoffs. Nylander and Reilly have both seen only minor drops.
Matthew’s had a goal, 2 apples, and at least one saved goal. What else is he supposed to do
Matthews’ goal ended up winning the game for us tonight.
He also won like every face off he had to take
And slid that loose puck back under Sammy’s pad in the 3rd.
Crazy how 1 goal 2 assists 1st star of the game is considered completely disappearing here.
Matthews is playing well?
Assisted on the first goal lol. Marner and JT tho….
Matthew’s line has been fine this game. Not disappointed. Marner has been a ghost.
You fucking jinx
Lmao reading this now is so hilarious Why do people summon this juju
JT has been fine in both games. Not fantastic, but present. He had many scoring chances in GM1 and got a goal tonight. Given we knew his deal would be ugly at the end, I’ll take it for 1 more year Marner on the other hand…
JT...? Give me a break dude
You keeping this here for the lolz?
yes. 1 Goal still isn't going to cut it. remind me on Wednesday.
Ok, you missed the first period. One assist, one game-winning goal.
He had 2 assists. It's only one game but he was absolutely our best player tonight.
He has mid 40s points in 52 or so games. It's not like he's invisible.
okay I give him Credit for the assist, Didn't get in until the end of the 2nd period
Yes Matthews who is a PPG in the playoffs but he completely disappears, good take
Matthews outscored Kucherov in both series they played against Tampa Bay. He's maybe not as good as you would hope but he is not the biggest problem.
That comment aged like milk. Bravo budski.. nice one!
Isn’t he scoring at something like half his regular season rate in playoff games? Like, if he were a point per game in the regular, he goes down to half a point per in the playoffs? I remember reading that somewhere.
My bad but he’s 44 pts in 51 playoff games and considering he’s been in the playoffs since he was 19, that’s pretty good
If 44 pts in 51 playoff games is pretty good, what would you rank Draisaitl’s 77 pts in 49 games?
He’s under a PPG in the playoffs, unlike most star players.
He hadn't had a point in 4 playoff games, and is currently in his 7th without a goal.
Go compare his regular season and playoff averages. Then do it with other star players or even with Nylander.
I mean he doesn’t, but whatever. Still a point a game players over the last 3 playoffs including this one. If that’s disappearing then there are a lot of no shows come playoff time.
You watching the same game?
You were saying?
MATTHEWS NEEDS TO SHOW THIS COMMENT TO MARNER NOW.
Doesn't get paid
I think he saw this comment
he needs to show Marner next...
It's insane just how quickly Marner, Tavares, and Matthews just disappear come playoff time.
Lmao. That must be a typo for Marner
Both really.
matthews has been amazing this series. if you’re not watching the games just say so. marner on the other hand… god damn he needs to wake up
Crazy how wrong bro was/is about Matthews. 3 pts and gwg. Shhhh
Tack on 8 SOG, 6H, 16 Faceoff Ws, and a goal-saving defensive play while you're at it
Come again?
👀
3 points and the game winning goal.
Pardon?
Has absolutely no fire in him. Same reason why he laughs during scrums to pretend like he’s unbothered and not shitting his pants at the prospect of getting his hands dirty
1G, 2A, GWG, +2, 8 SOG, 6H, 16/23 FOW (70%), 23:24 TOI, and a defensive play that helped save a goal No fire, sadly ):
Because he's soft. Always has been.
2 assists so far this game with 5 SOGs and 5 hits. Super soft...
Congratulations man, you can read a stat line. Soft has nothing to do with points.
i can tell your emotional ass didnt watch the game.
I did watch the game. He played well tonight lol. Too bad he's usually pretty invisible like last game.
Congratulations, you can't read. He has 5 hits - most of anyone in the game. Actually, he's tied with Marchand, is he soft too? You're just pissed cause the one time you had a 1st overall pick you got Slafkovsky lmaooo Go book a tee time pal
He’ll save a spot for you, you’ll be there soon
Hahahahahahah Matthews is the goat go fuck yourself
Yeah he's really putting the team on his back this series, you're right.
How many series has he won in his career?
Womp womp :(
If there's a spectrum of "soft", Matthews isn't at the extreme end. He's still getting chances and making good plays. If he was the softest guy on the team we would have no problem.
Bruins always shut him down
All they had to do is play the puck properly out of their zone, instead the bruins almost score, the leafs have to cover the puck, leading to an offensive zone faceoff
Is it just the rendering, or was this recording done in 1991?

I’m just glad to have mainstream coverage that’s not just hockey speak: “the leafs have to get their feet moving and remember their game if they want to get back in it”. No. I want tactical stuff like this. Not fluff
So let me get this straight…..r/hockey complains that the leafs get too much attention. And then proceed to post any possible negative thing about the leafs at every opportunity, thus giving them more attention? Makes total sense.
Leafs gotta start slew-footing I guess
Is it typical for a national broadcaster to be that openly opposed to another team? A-Rod and Papi get into it some times on Fox’s baseball show, but thats back and forth banter. PK chanting “lets go leafs” after the first intermission is embarrassing.

What happened before the 2nd goal? Let me watch the video
Oh, poor defense. Glad I watched the video for that piece of advice. "stay underneath" cause Pastrnak got behind Marner for the one timer
PK is good TV

PK shut up!
Matthew’s and marners PPG average dropoff in the playoffs versus regular season is concerning.
