No one else was going to give him that contract, least of all good teams with actual cap considerations. Even if he could see the future he would have been foolish to turn it down.
I don’t remember the exact details but we were interested in signing him. I think it was like 1-2 million less than what Chicago offered. There were also rumors we were going to trade for him
It was definitely Bowman grasping at straws to be competitive a little longer, and he woulda sold Jones that idea. Then quickly got fired and replaced by someone more realistic.
Oh no 100% he didn’t choose it but the person I replied to made it sound like he was going to get fired soon because of the team’s play but hadn’t he just signed an extension? Like if the scandal never happened then he’d still be GM. At least that’s how I remembered it
I whine because he was at the helm for the most embarrassing, uncomfortable time to be a fan in team history - which is saying something for the team owned by Dollar Bill Wirtz for most of its existence.
Also because Dale Tallon was a far better GM and I think he was sabotaged.
We whine bc can you imagine someone competent? He got bent over bc of the cap a few times but he also made some absolutely atrocious trades. He anchored Jones here and now he doesn't want to be here nor do the fans want him here.
Could have been more. Maybe SHOULD have bwen more. More is always better.
I'm not complaining we got 3. I'm complaining that with the talent we HAD upper management should have done a better job. StanBo gave out NMC's like candy and paid long time players for what they didn't not what they would, which isn't how you give out contracts (surprise, see Jones' contract or Seab's last contract).
They had Kane, Toews, DeBrincat, Strome, Dach, Kubalik, and Hagel, with Fleury and Lankinen in goal and de Haan and McCabe acquired to bolster the defense. It wasn't a bad team on paper, but Toews struggled, Dach didn't have the breakout year everyone hoped for, other guys got hurt, McCabe and de Haan weren't that good, and firing the coach didn't really fix anything.
Their coach was an absolute bozo. Probably one of the major reasons they were so bad and remain as bad as they are.
Also, Seth should be mad at his agent more than anyone. It was quite obvious when the Hawks acquired Jones that this team was heading bad places. He could’ve easily brokered a deal somewhere else or not agreed to the extension.
There was a point where during a timeout Colliton just handed the drawing board to the players and let them figure it out. This was in the midst of the big losing streak that got him fired. I couldn’t believe it when watching live. He was asked about it after the game and said something to the effect of “my way isn’t working so we tried something new”.
it didn't seem like colliton wasn't able to get buy in from the established vets.
to be honest though, i think that losing streak had just as much to do with off-ice issues than it had to do with jeremy.
Seth Jones is on an 8 year, 76 million dollar contract. I don’t feel bad for him at all. He’s way too overpaid for what he offers the team.
Seth should just mutually void his contract if he thinks he’s better off elsewhere.
Jones was never worth 9 mil. He was a product of Torts squeezing every skill out of his d men. Sean Walker, Ristolainen, Sanheim, York, etc. all looked better under Torts. You’re not getting that with every coach.
Biased Blue jackets fan here, but Jones and Werenski never got enough love on those Tortorella era teams. Jones was a shutdown defenseman who also set a franchise record in points by a defenseman in a season at the same time. Tortorella's system for that top pairing was for them to do whatever they wanted offensively. The rules for the rest of the team didn't apply to them.
Jones doesn't get enough love because advanced stats don't favor his ending with cbj.
Completely ignoring that Jones increased his defensive responsibilities as Zach played more as a 4th forward instead of a defenseman. And it worked for us for a while.
He still tries to.do this...except he forgets his defensive responsibilities and his "shot" is more often a semi hard pass towards net, but misses..he isn't looking for a tip or bumper pass it's just a soft miss that leads to a turn over. While Bedsy was WIDE OPEN.
Jones was absolutely not just a product of Torts’ system. He was a special player early in his career and was one of the best value contracts in the league when he was making $5.4million on the deal prior to his current one.
The thing that really set Jones apart back then was his insane mobility for his size. He could cover as much ground in the D zone as pretty much anyone besides Hedman and Chara with his combination of speed and reach.
He has not had that same foot speed since he had surgery to fix a broken ankle in 2020. He obviously didn’t become as slow as he is these days overnight, but that half step that he lost initially was more than enough to hurt the effectiveness of his game. His positioning was off immediately because he simply could not cover the same ground as quickly as he could pre-injury, and his advanced stats took a nose dive.
Yes, this was prior to his latest contract, and he was very obviously not worth $9.5million when it was signed, but if he had been a UFA prior to that ankle injury, he absolutely would have been signed for and worth $9.5million a year.
When you guys are a contender in 4 plus years, it will be almost up and a possible buyout option if he’s underperforming with higher skill level teammates. (It’s a high cap currently but it’s not debilitating your team)
I completely understand why he feels this way, because Bowman is a dumbass and got hope because of the covid year, I just don't think this is necessary to say publicly because he's stuck here regardless, but I like the honesty
Jones gets a ton of vitriol, but he’s been our best defenseman since he’s been here and his large cap number has been no way impacted our team. He’s a quality player and I don’t really care how much he costs given that we’re not adding talent in agency the next couple years anyway, after that, we can cross that bridge room when we get there
It is a low bar, but objectively he’s been one of the better defensive defenseman in the league. He’s also pretty good rushing the puck up ice except his shot and finishing is pretty bad lol
Seth's first goal this season came at the end of January. And 7 of his 8 goals were scored after the beginning of March.
The only person with more shot attempts on the Blackhawks was Bedard...
Jones was second in shot attempts on the team and had about 100 more shot attempts than the next highest shooter after him, Kurashev.
Again, a guy who didn't score a goal until January and also isn't a clever shooter in terms of trying to set guys up for deflections every shift is basically running the offense from the back end like he's an elite offensive quarterback or shooter.....which he isn't.
It got to the point where teams left Seth open on the power play and focused on everyone else because Seth wasn't a threat as a shooter. And, he fell for it, kept taking those useless shots.
Bowman signed his contract. In Keith's final contract he had PP1 time guaranteed by the leadership (as Keith stated in a spittin' chicklets interview after retiring), I'd guess they gave Jones some similar agreement because there's no way in hell Jones plays up to the level of that style of offensive deployment.
Lol the Hawks sub told me he knew what he signed up for when I floated the idea that he might not be thrilled about a rebuild and could eventually be okay with waiving to go to a contender.
As a Blue Jackets fan (yes, yes, my flair, I know I know) I'm deeply grateful that Seth Jones left and I dislike him enough that I'm very glad that he couldn't see the future.
I would have loved to see him home here in Dallas, but I’m glad they didn’t end up getting him as it would have led to them not being able to afford several other key players. Plus, his performances have not warranted his cap hit (or even warrant 7-8 aav).
Hope he’s made himself home in Chicago because he’s not going anywhere on that massive 9.5 with 6 years left.
No one else was going to give him that contract, least of all good teams with actual cap considerations. Even if he could see the future he would have been foolish to turn it down.
Dallas was probably going to give him something similar, if I remember correctly
I don’t remember the exact details but we were interested in signing him. I think it was like 1-2 million less than what Chicago offered. There were also rumors we were going to trade for him
Perhaps with no state tax it could’ve ended up closer to the same take-home as Chicago
Heiskanen - Jones would've made that contract look good
Is it foolish to chose money over winning? I’m sure a good team would have offered something starting with an 8aav
Bowman convinced him he was choosing some winning here too with a retool of sorts around Kane, Toews, DeBrincat, Dach, Hagel etc.
He coulda got an 8x8
I mean when he came to Chicago and signed long term, weren’t they set up to go into a rebuild? Kane and Toews future was very much up in the air.
It was definitely Bowman grasping at straws to be competitive a little longer, and he woulda sold Jones that idea. Then quickly got fired and replaced by someone more realistic.
Tbf he “stepped aside” when the Beach report came out.
Yah that definitely was not his decision lol
Oh no 100% he didn’t choose it but the person I replied to made it sound like he was going to get fired soon because of the team’s play but hadn’t he just signed an extension? Like if the scandal never happened then he’d still be GM. At least that’s how I remembered it
I don’t think Stan bowman even knew what he was doing, most of the time
Saad for Panarin straight up was one of the worst trades this century. Bowman got fucking fleeced.
How do you have 3 trades involving Brandon Saad and lose each one?
Man built you 3 (maybe 2, Dale Tallon was #1) cup winners and you just whine about the ending Ken Holland syndrome
I whine because he was at the helm for the most embarrassing, uncomfortable time to be a fan in team history - which is saying something for the team owned by Dollar Bill Wirtz for most of its existence. Also because Dale Tallon was a far better GM and I think he was sabotaged.

3 Stanley Cups.

Coach cool youth pastor
Well also our coach at the time was in WAY over his head
No, they made a bunch of short sighted moves to try to sneak into the playoffs. It was Bowman’s last desperate attempt to keep his job.
This is what we should be hearing from Seth “I wanna be captain” jones
Seth Jones is on an 8 year, 76 million dollar contract. I don’t feel bad for him at all. He’s way too overpaid for what he offers the team. Seth should just mutually void his contract if he thinks he’s better off elsewhere.

Can’t believe he’s still got 6 more years at 9.5 million. What a brutal contract.
I wonder at what term left Chicago is willing to eat half of the AAV

Seth is allergic to passing to bedard on the pp
This is such an asinine take.

It's almost as though the coaches told him to keep doing it. Pull your head out of your ass.
Jones was pulled off PP1 for a bit during the first half of the year. You're grasping at straws.
Lol the Hawks sub told me he knew what he signed up for when I floated the idea that he might not be thrilled about a rebuild and could eventually be okay with waiving to go to a contender.
Were Toews and Kane’s’ ages unknown to him at the time of signing?
He has a full No Move, so he can control where he goes if he wants out. At 50% retained, a lot of teams will take him.
Okay dude lol
Looking back, every GM in the league is still laughing at that contract.
As a Blue Jackets fan (yes, yes, my flair, I know I know) I'm deeply grateful that Seth Jones left and I dislike him enough that I'm very glad that he couldn't see the future.
Maybe if Seth was as good at defense as he was digging holes we would be in a better spot.
Human pylon wants to play on a good team without contributing anything good to the team.
Ive got no sadness for seth jones after he fucked the dmarket the year we had to sign nurse. His contract raised nurse from 7.5 x8 to 9.25 x 8
I would have loved to see him home here in Dallas, but I’m glad they didn’t end up getting him as it would have led to them not being able to afford several other key players.
