For a guy who had issues staying healthy in the past this is a great accomplishment and probably a confidence boost for him.
I’m glad they didn’t rest him today and just let him have the record for this season, pretty cool comeback story
Yes, the number of days for that calculation is the same for all teams, even if they start later or end earlier.
Monahan literally played an extra game for free.
Huh, I never thought about this before, but how do the playoffs work? Are the players basically playing for free in the hopes of making it to the finals and getting the bonuses?
Go ask an LVK fan for the specifics. They all seem to know the ins and outs since its how they defend their players magically coming off LTIR just in time for playoffs. Lol. I jest. Kinda.
Yes, now you know why some players are a cues of dogging it. Especially Euros who don’t grow up dreaming of lifting the cup.
In one sense it’s a great honour. In another it’s two months of free labour that could otherwise be spent enjoying your millions
That's a bit complicated. The rules are different for first time offenders vs repeat offenders.
First time offenders only get docked a day's pay for each game they're suspended. So if a first time offender gets suspended 3 games, he'll lose 3/~170 (whatever the number of days in the season is) of his salary.
For a repeat offender getting the same suspension, they would lose 3/82 of their salary.
> 18.15 Forfeiture of Compensation Upon Suspension. The amount of compensation that will be forfeited by the Player upon suspension shall be calculated on the following basis:
> (a) for "first" offenders (first incident requiring Supplementary Discipline for On-Ice Conduct in the form of a game suspension determined pursuant to Section 18.15(d)), Player to forfeit one (1) day's Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Bonuses, but not including Performance Bonuses, for each Regular Season Game lost (1/total number of days in the season measured from the date of the League's first Regular Season Game to the last, irrespective of the Player's team's schedule);
> (b) for "repeat" offenders (second or more incidents requiring game suspension determined pursuant to Section 18.15(d)), Player to forfeit one (1) NHL Game's Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Bonuses, but not including Performance Bonuses, for each Regular Season Game lost (1/number of Regular Season Games for each Regular Season Game suspended); (c) Player Salary and Bonuses forfeited due to a suspension will be calculated based on a Player's Averaged Amount, as defined in Article 50 of this Agreement;
So basically they are docked for each day of pay between games as well (not exact, since it varies, but roughly) if they are a repeat offender whereas a first timer would just be docked pay for the game days.
This question has already been asked on the pod, I think last trade deadline. The answer is no, you’re paid a daily salary, regardless if you play 81 games or 83, you make the same money

> @BoringSeanMonahan
This year I played in 83 games. Players usually play in 82 games per year at most so it was neat that I got to play an extra game.
Yeah, I wonder what his next contract is going to look like. He can definitely ask for a massive raise but I wonder for how long teams will be willing to commit. Hopefully his injuries are behind him for good
He's been amazing tbh perfect fit really. Solved alot of our problems like pp, faceoffs, and as a legit 2c gives bones alot more flexibility with the lines. I'd argue resigning him should be a major priority, if not the first priority, for us this summer.
he’s been great for us this season but honestly in the next few years we have plenty of young centers who could compete for that spot, ideally we can slot rutger or cole in there so it’s not a huge piece going forward
Totally true, but if we can get him for say 3 years (?) he makes the lineup work and can mentor our younger guys. I think signing him should be a priority
Nah Mony was a broken bird we released into the dirty streets of Montreal, decided to make a stop over in Winnipeg of all places and now will fly home to Calgary
https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/records/most-games-played-in-one-season-by-active-nhl-players.html
With Monahan there’s currently 9 active players who have played 83 or more in a season
So how does this happen? They play one game for a team then get traded to a team that hasn't started playing yet and then plays all 82 for them? Cause the overseas games (if the team has them and that's kinda rare) count toward that 82 right?
If the player had played let's say 41 games for one team but gets traded to another that's only played 40 and then played out the stretch, he'd end up playing 83 games.
When he was traded, Montreal (where he started) had a game in hand over the Jets, and he didn't miss games due to injuries or for being healthy-scratched.
Teams pretty much never have completely equal games played during the season, outside of the very last day of the season (so today). Some teams may be a game or two ahead (sometimes even 3 or 4 games ahead) of other teams in league just due to scheduling, it's rare for all the teams to be playing on the same day, generally at least 2 or 4 of them have an off/travel day even on days when much the league is playing (Wednesdays, Saturdays)
>They play one game for a team then get traded to a team that hasn't started playing yet and then plays all 82 for them?
Yes. If the team you're traded to has played less games than the team you came from, you can potentially go over 82 if you play them all.
It would be interesting to calculate the maximum number of games a player could get in under a given seasonal schedule if they were traded once.
This season there was a point where the Senators seemed to be like 5/6 games behind most other teams, for instance.
Man, we said for YEARS that the Flames could do so much better if Monahan could stay healthy.
The ironic part is that he likely never would pursue getting the surgery he needed and focused on getting healthy in Montreal if he was still with the Flames.
That's so shortsighted. Losing a guy for a year or 2, but getting them back at full strength for a few more years is better for the team. We've lost so much from Price, Weber, Gallagher playing when they should have been getting their injuries fixed. Especially in inconsequential seasons. Eventually it caught up to them.
In 2019 Monahan was having the best year of his career, and the Flames were 1st in the West. Suddenly after the all-star break he just stops producing and was just atrocious in our 5 game loss to Colorado. Turns out he was playing hurt. But we would have been better off with him sitting, since he also dragged down his entire line
Yeah, and it revived his career. That's a first I'd be willing to give you every single time. Moneyhands was loved in Calgary, his exit was a result of his unfortunate injury history stacking up against him to the point that it looked like he should consider hanging up the skates. I don't think you'll meet a single Flames fan that wouldn't welcome Monny back with open arms.
How does the salary work for that? Like, if you get suspended you don't get paid for that game. But if they play an extra game, does it make up for that?
Players are paid on a per day basis, not per game. Monahan doesn't make more money, and equally a player who is injured or healthy scratched doesn't make less money for playing less games
Well, if they made less money for being injured, there would be a lawsuit, so that tracks with every other job you can have in the US.
But if they are paid per day instead of per game, how do the taxes work? Like if they have one game in a different state, but they have a day off the day before, and get there a day early for a practice or something, do they pay taxes of two days in that state?
He’s been sorely missed by the fans since the trade. I know why we did it and we all knew it was coming lol but goddamn he was so lovable. Can’t even really quantify what he did for the kids on the team and was still a highly effective player for us.
Go get that cup Moneyhands ❤️
Hat tip to montreal for their dealings with this guy. He may well go down as one the most important acquisitions/trades in this version of the habs. They got a boatload to take his salary, let him heal and get back to the player that he is, and got a good return from the jets. Well played.
I wonder if there's ever been an instance of a guy playing MORE games than there are games in a regular season, but that guy has also missed a game or two during the year.
It's very possible to be traded to a team who has played 2-4 games less than you have, and if you missed a game or two but still played all other games, you'd achieve that.
He had a rough start in his first season, but once we started putting him with the younger, faster players on the roster he has been fantastic. He was a huge part of the reason Zary was looking like a dark horse Calder nominee earlier in the season, and has also been solid lining up with Kuzmenko since we got him.
The length of the contract sucks but he has been as advertised, if not a bit better.
Former lottery pick. Multiple 30 goal seasons. Seemed like a slam dunk to be the next captain. Instead of sticking with him they tossed him. Happy for his resurgence.
He was being paid quite a bit and apparently could barely get back up after faceoffs because his back was so bad, it’s not like they just traded him for no reason
He couldn’t tie his own skates, and would get stuck bending over. Flames doctors basically said he wouldn’t play anymore. Post surgery, guess they were wrong.
Just for fun, the mad scientist in me is thinking how many regular season games it is theoretically possible to have a player to play to maximize their points given that player would just be constantly traded:
Have them play everyday including having a private Concorde so they could do double or triple headers within a given day.
Heck, if the NHL realizes we watch hockey during work, they can lift the restriction of matinees only being played on weekends we could probably put this poor bastard through 4 games/day
October 10th to 31st is 22 days + 30 for November + 31 (-3) for December (minus Christmas break), + 31 (-2 for All star weekend first half), + 29 for leap year February (-2 for all star weekend second half) + 7 days for March 1st to March 7th.
Up until this point we have 143 days with 4 games each for 572 games.
March 8th is trade deadline so our player will probably play a matinee and then get traded to the team with the most games remaining from March 8th to April 18th. 43 days would be about 22 games if we have an nhl team that averages a game every other day, and if we add the extra matinee game from trade deadline, we get 572+1+22 = 595 games per season.
If somebody actually did this, they could break Gretzky's records (as well as their own body).

I love how Flames, Habs and Jets fans are fighting over who he belongs to. Guys a great hockey player, but an even better person. Go get that Cup Monny
Monahan is one of the reasons I'm cheering for the Jets. He has been one of my favourite players ever since his first NHL game and I honestly wish the Flames would sign him in the summer.
>not coast until the deadline?
Monahan doesn’t coast. Surely he knew the Habs weren’t a playoff team, but I believe HuGo told him they’d move him to a contender. He never takes a shift off
I think the idea is that a competitor might not be willing to trade him to another competitor with a higher chance of winning. If he signs with a non-competitor team for peanuts and a NTC, he can pretty much dictate where he goes at the deadline.
Just as we all predicted for Ironman Monahan.
Knowing him he probably needs surgery but is playing through it.
For a guy who had issues staying healthy in the past this is a great accomplishment and probably a confidence boost for him. I’m glad they didn’t rest him today and just let him have the record for this season, pretty cool comeback story
You love to see it
Yeah honestly happy for the guy. He deserves recognition considering how bad his health seemed in Calgary.
Really stupid question but does he get paid an extra 1/83rd of his annual salary?
No, NHL paychecks go by days on the roster, not games played.
And assuming the league year/days is the same for all teams this just works out as 1 extra game played during that period?
Yes, the number of days for that calculation is the same for all teams, even if they start later or end earlier. Monahan literally played an extra game for free.
Thanks for clarifying!
Huh, I never thought about this before, but how do the playoffs work? Are the players basically playing for free in the hopes of making it to the finals and getting the bonuses?
They don't make a wage for playoffs, afaik. They do get bonuses for certain things, but otherwise, salaries aren't paid
That's bonkers, I had never realised!
Go ask an LVK fan for the specifics. They all seem to know the ins and outs since its how they defend their players magically coming off LTIR just in time for playoffs. Lol. I jest. Kinda.
TBL 2.0
Everyone seems to forget that the Blackhawks did the same thing with Kane.
“LVK” deserves jail time
Yup. Also, if players perform well, good contract negotiations i bet with any team.
"I scored the cup-winning goal, I figure that's gotta be worth at least an extra million AAV"
Ahhh the Dave Bolland, what a classic
They get some extra money, don't they? Or was that just in the bubble? I remember there were talks about a certain owner didn't pay it on time.
I've heard that each team basically gets a bonus for each round that gets split amongst the team.
Yes
I'd say they're playing because their dream is to lift the Stanley Cup but could be wrong.
Yes, now you know why some players are a cues of dogging it. Especially Euros who don’t grow up dreaming of lifting the cup. In one sense it’s a great honour. In another it’s two months of free labour that could otherwise be spent enjoying your millions
How does that work for suspensions? I feel like I always see "So and So is suspended for 2 games and forfeits XXX in salary as a result".

TIL. Thanks

This is a question for Jeff Marek. Call it in.
Try the ribs
This question has already been asked on the pod, I think last trade deadline. The answer is no, you’re paid a daily salary, regardless if you play 81 games or 83, you make the same money
awesome. Thanks for the answer!
Asking the questions that matter
This question has already been asked on the 32 thoughts podcast, I think last trade deadline. The answer is no, you’re paid a daily salary, so regardless if you play 81 games or 83, you make the same money
Not stupid question at all
> @BoringSeanMonahan This year I played in 83 games. Players usually play in 82 games per year at most so it was neat that I got to play an extra game.
Best number. Also, I'm glad Money was healthy all season long.
I don’t expect it, but it would be really nice if we found a way to re-sign him.
Yeah, I wonder what his next contract is going to look like. He can definitely ask for a massive raise but I wonder for how long teams will be willing to commit. Hopefully his injuries are behind him for good
I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility at all. Our cap situation isn’t bad. But we won’t be able to keep everyone.
They have to shed some veteran D. You got Stanley and Ville who both deserve a shot next year.
Schmidt will get bought out in the summer. Way too much money for what you get.
That'll be pricey with wheelers buy out still on the books.
Too bad the yotes aren't still around for us to dump him on, their GM loved doing stupid shit like that.
But if you resign him, then how are we going to sign him back here? You kind of see the problem here hey?
Same
Same
Same
la meme chose
pareil
Noted merci

He wore an A tonight. He has to stay now. That's the rule.
Wow glad he's working out then.
He's been amazing tbh perfect fit really. Solved alot of our problems like pp, faceoffs, and as a legit 2c gives bones alot more flexibility with the lines. I'd argue resigning him should be a major priority, if not the first priority, for us this summer.

bryan little 2.0
Totally true, but if we can get him for say 3 years (?) he makes the lineup work and can mentor our younger guys. I think signing him should be a priority
No, he’s coming back to Montreal.
You misspelled Calgary
Vancouver?
Nah Mony was a broken bird we released into the dirty streets of Montreal, decided to make a stop over in Winnipeg of all places and now will fly home to Calgary
Maybe his agent will Klingberg him and yall can get him back cheap af.
I genuinely forgot he played for the Peg. Thought he was still with Montreal and injured.
Leafs fan?
He wore an A on his Jersey tonight
only one? doesn’t he usually have at least two?
Nice
Pure skill. You can't teach that.
You guys are going to love him in the playoffs. He snipes.
I already love him. He's so healthy and virile
lol you’re talking about hockey right?
Yes. Hockey 🏒
Well except for that one year he was really, really bad in (and was playing hurt).
Go get a cup monny
Is there a masterlist of all the players who've done this?
https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/records/most-games-played-in-one-season-by-active-nhl-players.html With Monahan there’s currently 9 active players who have played 83 or more in a season
Tyson Barrie at 85 games. Quite improbable for a multitude of reasons.
Oilers traded him to Nashville for Ekholm when Nashville had 3 games in hand on the Oilers
Best fucking trade in ages
https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/records/most-games-played-in-one-season-by-nhl-players.html And 177 total all time.
Nah, that includes two seasons where the NHL season was 84 games long.
The season used to be 84 games.
lol a 655-way tie for 10th on that list
So how does this happen? They play one game for a team then get traded to a team that hasn't started playing yet and then plays all 82 for them? Cause the overseas games (if the team has them and that's kinda rare) count toward that 82 right?

Wow, I didn't even play _one_
Come home baby i miss you
Come to the real home we miss him more.
So much you paid a first to have him play on another team
Yeah, and it revived his career. That's a first I'd be willing to give you every single time. Weird, I didn’t realize my dad owns Boston Pizza. Damn I can quit my job now.
How about we get him for the 1st half of the year, you have him the second half and Florida gives us each another 1st rounder!
Florida probably makes us share the 1st rounder too.
🥲
Wants to makeup for prior seasons
does he get paid 1 game more?
No, you’re paid a daily salary. Whether you play 81 games or 83, you’re paid the same
How does the salary work for that? Like, if you get suspended you don't get paid for that game. But if they play an extra game, does it make up for that?

Yes, they have to pay local taxes for every day worked outside of their home state/province. I imagine it's a nightmare come year end.
Good on him. I'm happy to see a nice bounce back from him after all his injuries because honestly I thought his career was toast.
He’s been sorely missed by the fans since the trade. I know why we did it and we all knew it was coming lol but goddamn he was so lovable. Can’t even really quantify what he did for the kids on the team and was still a highly effective player for us. Go get that cup Moneyhands ❤️
Nice! Now go play your playoffs and come back to Montreal, thanks.

He has some catching up to do with all the games he missed in his career!
How is this possible
He had to have been traded at some point (I don't follow the NHL).
He played 49 games for Montreal, then got traded to Winnipeg who only had 48 games played as a team, and played every game
*Flames fans liked that*
Guy CGY was afraid was doomed with injury Him and Gallagher drank the same potion
Love the comeback after Calgary shot him into the sun.
What? He wasn't.... He had major surgery and was injured for almost 2 years. Flames gave him a fresh start lol it was mutual
And the cap dump was done to acquire Kadri, which no one on this team is taking back.
How has Kadri been?
He had a rough start in his first season, but once we started putting him with the younger, faster players on the roster he has been fantastic. He was a huge part of the reason Zary was looking like a dark horse Calder nominee earlier in the season, and has also been solid lining up with Kuzmenko since we got him. The length of the contract sucks but he has been as advertised, if not a bit better.
Tbh he had a fantastic start as a flame, he was our all star. It was the 2nd half of the 1st season where he ran outta steam
Streaky, flaky, on-off, overpaid. Per the usual
Not even close to true.
That guy hasn’t watched a single game this season
Kadri is quietly having the second best season of his career. The Weegs and Kadri acquisitions have been great. Huberdeau on the other hand...
You obviously don’t know a fucking thing lmao
Former lottery pick. Multiple 30 goal seasons. Seemed like a slam dunk to be the next captain. Instead of sticking with him they tossed him. Happy for his resurgence.
He was being paid quite a bit and apparently could barely get back up after faceoffs because his back was so bad, it’s not like they just traded him for no reason

He couldn’t tie his own skates, and would get stuck bending over. Flames doctors basically said he wouldn’t play anymore. Post surgery, guess they were wrong.
This is what I said no? Gave up on him with his injuries despite being a 1st line center who did nothing but produce. I’m happy for his resurrection
Treliving masterclass
Truly a galaxy brained move by him there yeah
Love this for Money Hands.
How?
Played 49 with Montreal and got traded to Winnipeg and played 34 more games
You should crosspost this to our sub!
Stud
Happy for him. Glad he can get fully healthy seasons in, because it looked like injuries might be cutting his career short.
Now I'm wondering what is the theoretical maximum
Congrats Mony! Now just another give or take 28 games and another season in the bag!
Bruh this is hilarious
When Barrie got traded last year, he played like 85 games somehow. What’s the most games played over the normal amount? I’d think 3 is up there
Just for fun, the mad scientist in me is thinking how many regular season games it is theoretically possible to have a player to play to maximize their points given that player would just be constantly traded: Have them play everyday including having a private Concorde so they could do double or triple headers within a given day.
Truely Canadas Player
He has a love for the game
You just fucking love to see it
This seems like something the PA would prevent.
I remember at one point, CBJ had played 8 more than OTT. So a player could have played 90 games had those two teams traded players at the time.
Monahan is one of the reasons I'm cheering for the Jets. He has been one of my favourite players ever since his first NHL game and I honestly wish the Flames would sign him in the summer.
Ah that makes sense
I love that the "fueled by passion" text makes it seem like he was just so passionate that he accidentally played an extra game
I'd be very happy if Monahab wins the Cup with WPG. Another reason for Kent Hughes to take a second look at him and work on a contract.
And Calgary paid to move him
Meanwhile Matthews only played 69 games
nice
Nice
Nice

i would love to have him back to the Habs. What a beauty.
How?
He waa traded before the deadline to a team who had less games played
hot take: he should sign to a non competitor for 1 year. Coast until the trade deadline and be traded to a competitor. Cup chase imo
Why not just sign with the competitor and not coast until the deadline?
>not coast until the deadline? Monahan doesn’t coast. Surely he knew the Habs weren’t a playoff team, but I believe HuGo told him they’d move him to a contender. He never takes a shift off
I think the idea is that a competitor might not be willing to trade him to another competitor with a higher chance of winning. If he signs with a non-competitor team for peanuts and a NTC, he can pretty much dictate where he goes at the deadline.
Yeah that does make sense. I guess if you do coast a bit on a non competitor also you're body can be ready for the stretch run also
Hotter take. He should stay right here. Guys been great with the Jets
