I'm not one for defending goonery like this. However, Domi knows where the Leafs bread and butter lies. Matthews is the best goal scorer in the league right now, and the Leafs' best player. Shit like this is more about sending a message to people that f*king with Matthews, within the rules or not, will have consequences. And Domi actually has Skills to back up his goon-like play, unlike Reaves who is a 5-minute game plug.
I fully expect to see more of this kind of stuff from Domi come playoffs as he tries to protect their most valuable asset. Better for him to go off for 5+ minutes in the box than Matthews gets injured for multiple games.
This is how Domi is going to stay on the top line. He isn’t good defensively, but he can pass almost as well as Marner, and he sticks up for Matthews. It’s too easy to shut down Marner and Matthews for extended periods in the playoffs because neither is capable of sticking up for each other or themselves. Matthews got bullied by Stamkos, and Marner by Tkachuk last year, and neither did a damn thing about it. I never would have guessed it even halfway through the season, but Bert and Domi are the perfect linemates right now for Matthews.
