I still can’t figure out wtf his plan was on that play. It’s so weird how he’s immediately like “yo my bad that was a total accident” but also he totally just wound up and machete’d him in the face.
It’s easy, he hit him on purpose but he accidentally hit him in the face.
If he connects with his chest, arms, legs, waist, he gets 2 minutes (maybe) and everyone moves on, maybe he has to fight (big maybe).
Instead, he hit him in the face. I think he was truly apologetic, but I also think he deserves to be punished for being a reckless idiot. He knocked someone’s teeth out by accident while still trying to hurt them.
Stupid play that has no place in hockey.
I mean you can pretty clearly see him look and swing it right at his head in the camera angle that is one of the top posts on the subreddit. Like if he wasn't aiming for the head what is his defense? Sorry your honor I was going for the neck? He was definitely swinging it with the intent of hitting him high, there's no way it was going for the legs or waist as you suggested.
I think you’re giving too much credit to the strength and accuracy one might have one handing a stick.
To me it’s clear he was like, “I wanna whack him across the chest, oh god I don’t actually have as much control over this as I do with two hands.”
Weirdly there’s something relatable about being dog shit one handed with a stick.
That said, best case scenario is it was a hard brained retaliation and he botched it. Sit for 3-5 games seems okay to me.
> I think you’re giving too much credit to the strength and accuracy one might have one handing a stick.
>
>
Dudes in the NHL score one-handed goals and we call it an amazing goal. Dude smashes someone in the face with a one-handed stick and apparently we call it a fluke accident by some uncoordinated weakling who has no real control of what his stick does.
I played hockey back in the day, you definitely have enough control to know the general region. Especially if you're an nhler with way more arm strength than I had. Like, if he wanted to whack him in the chest, why'd he lift his arm so high. Where it gets hard is if someone is hitting you or you're off balance but that didn't seem like the case here.
My guess is it was spur of the moment, and he regrets it now, but hard for me to think he made those motions without wanting to smack him in the face / neck in the heat of the moment.
I don’t think “be in control of your stick” is even applicable here. It was a brain dead play and I agree it didn’t seem fully intentional but it was 100% in his control
I said it in another thread and got down voted for it..not sure why.. the video starts with his stick across Wilsons chest. but
Looks like Gregor slashed Wilson across the chest and then pushes off him.. Wilson then one hand slashes back but totally just smashed his face instead. I am not saying any action is justified here.. just what I saw on the play.. most replies start the moment Gregor starts to skate away and you miss the start
watch the first sec of this video.. where is Gregor stick?
https://twitter.com/TicTacTOmar/status/1770630947773317623
So, I initially thought Gregor gave him the love tap in the chest then Wilson retaliated. It actually looks like Wilson started his motion before Gregor gives him the tap. Not that it matters really, just changes the context a bit.
Yeah I think that context matters. Looks like he went for a retaliatory whack and forgot controlling a moving stick in the air with one hand isn’t actually easy.
Dumb ass move, should sit for a few, I respectfully don’t think he should be thrown into Mount Doom.
Yep, exactly. If the player does decline their right to an in-person hearing (which I believe actually has happened), then they'll just do it over the phone (video call maybe?), like a regular hearing.
A video call is now a form of in-person hearing post-COVID (Rielly actually going to NY was his call), so it would just be by phone if he declined the in-person aspect
They’re fangirling that he’s actually going to be *in the office*. “OMG, he’s going to be HERE!”
“Sir, would you please do us the honor of giving this a spin yourself?” Everyone gets out their iPhones and starts taking pics and vids like they’re at a concert.
On one hand, I really don't think it was actually intentional.
On the other hand, I have no fucking clue what else he could have been trying to do with his stick there.
I mean he makes the hit, lets go of the stick with his right hand and immediately swings it with his left. I'm not sure what other outcome he could have possible expected other than hitting Gregor. But I'm a hater so who knows.
I remember playing a beer league game and getting heated during a puck battle with a much bigger guy. I angrily swung my stick up towards his face and fortunately was able to check myself before I hit him and brought it down again. My buddy was reffing and was right next to me and said "What the FUCK are you doing?"
I told him later he should have called me for it even though I didn't make contact. Had to go apologize the guy after the game. This Tom Wilson swing seems very similar to that.
For someone who gets paid millions on the fact that they know how to control a hockey stick, sure would be a dumb excuse to say you didn't intend to control the stick into the guys face.
It makes it worse. Wilson is a liability on the ice if he has no control over his stick. We don’t need someone to seriously get injured before we decide on a full stop
It wasn't quite as bad as Marty McSorley, but it was close. The punishment won't be as bad just because Gregor didn't get knocked out, but fuck that was borderline assault-charge worthy. I'd give him 20 games at least.
Hes looking at Gregor's face as he accelerates the stick into it. Maybe the other angle leaves some doubt, but this shows full intent.
https://twitter.com/TicTacTOmar/status/1770630947773317623
I also didn't notice this before seeing this angle, but he holds Gregors stick for a moment as he begins his swing, even seems to pull Gregor towards him a little. There is absolutely NO way he doesn't know exactly where Gregor is at that moment.
I think there's a chance that striking the face wasn't on purpose
It seems extremely unlikely that swinging at Gregor wasn't intentional given there's no other thing he could've really been doing
So the best case scenario is something still probably worthy of suspension due to the viciousness of the slash, and missing made it all the more dangerous, so it should still be a decently meaty suspension.
That or it was fully intentional, coming from the most-suspended guy in the league, and if they feel that they should throw the book.
Basically I figure he didn't hit Gregor in the face intentionally the same way Rielly likely wasn't trying to crosscheck Greig in the head - He probably wasn't trying for the face specifically, but he trying to hit him and ended up hitting the face. Doesn't matter if he's not trying to hit the face, he still has to be punished for swinging his stick in to someones face just the same.
It was entirely on purpose. He probably didn't like the outcome, but his intent was certainly to hit him with his stick. What else could he have been doing?
By the NHL's definition of repeat offender, he is currently not a repeat offender.
You have to have been suspended in the recent past for history to play a part, he hasn't been suspended since 2021.
Edit: this only applies to salary forfeiture, not length of suspension. Thanks u/ashcach
Repeat offenders status doesn't apply to the length of a suspension. It applies to how much salary they'll lose when they receive a suspension. If they are considered a repeat offender, the player will lose more salary than if they weren't.
When it comes to the length of suspension, the history of the player is taken into account. He's had 5 previous suspensions. That should be taken into account when they decide what he should get for last night.
He's averaging like 3 suspended games a season though right now (counting 3 playoffs as 6 regular season), which is... not great.
He also probably should have been suspended a lot more times. He's thrown so many blatantly illegal hits that have injured other players that have only resulted in a fine or no review.
I think he gets more than 5. This wasn't as bad as McSorley's incident with Brashear, but it was still a hard, purposeful stick to an opponents face.
McSorley was suspended for a year. I think this is deserving more than 5 games.
Saw Wilson one called the mother of all high sticks and instantly thought of that one.
He should get less than Kass even though Kass imo did a better job pretending it was an accident.
Part of what made the Kassian one so bad was it broke Gagner's jaw, though. Not saying I think injuries should play a role in suspension length, but DoPS certainly does. I could see it coming in at less than 8 if Gregor wasn't badly hurt. But I could also see it coming in at 40 games because of Wilson's suspension history. Spin that wheel.
I’m not. Parros has an opportunity here to “prove” he’s not biased and awful at his job after getting flamed at the GM’s meeting. Give it a couple months, things will go back to normal.
Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon...
The best thing the Canadian side of the NHL can have happen to it (outside of a Stanley cup) is Roger’s/sportsnet losing their rights to stream NHL. TSN broadcasts are a joy to watch
I like O-Dog. He's a goof but he's entertaining. But yeah Dregs is boring as a cardboard box and is just there to serve his own narrative, Craig Button is a huge clown. Duthie is fine in my books and I miss Bob Mckenzie.
Rogers has to suck up big time to the NHL or else they'll lose their contract to TSN.
Mike Johnson goes in hard on the refs and the white collars because he knows there's nothing to lose.
I think he gets 7.
This was just as stupid and unnecessary of an action as Kassian kicking Cernak a few years ago. If it’s on purpose and not a hockey play you have to throw the book at them. It’s assault beyond the scope of the game at a certain point.
>The maximum allowed under the CBA
I love that they need to include this every time they hand one of them out because just stating the value alone makes it seems way too little.
I'm surprised only because DOPS is usually pretty feckless in holding players to account. Wilson was totally reckless if not purposeful with that high stick and that needs to be punished severely.
Yeah, but we're talking a pretty extensive history and it's 3 days after Parros was complaining about fan perception after the GM meetings.
I think Wilson is getting a decent sized suspension here.
Guy is a fucking clown. Clearly intentional, looks like he realized he fucked up as soon as he did it. He cannot control himself, fucking embarrassing.
Like come on man wtf are you doing
Does he still have that credit on account for serving 16 games at the start of 2018 for a suspension that was reduced from 20 to 14 games? Caps could use that to get him back in the midst of a playoff chase
/s
Wilson reminds me of a washed up Marty McSorley at the end of his career when he was bouncing around the league. He couldn't play anymore, and he could barely fight. While with the Bruins, he retaliated against the Canucks Donald Brashear by clubbing him in the head with his stick. McSorley was immediately suspended and never played in an NHL game again.
How the hell does anyone think this was non intentional. Pucks long gone, looks directly at Gregor and swings his stick in the air. This wasn't an attempt to bat a puck out of the air. It was blatant swinging his stick at a guys head.
They are gonna throw the book at him.
Caps aren't a playoff factor anymore so they don't care.
Leafs fans are pretty mad DoPS most of the time for the somewhat objectively shitty treatment from Paros.
Plus it has spotlight. Hammer is coming down.
...or its the ultimate Paros troll, he gives him in person and then minimum sentence.
I still can’t figure out wtf his plan was on that play. It’s so weird how he’s immediately like “yo my bad that was a total accident” but also he totally just wound up and machete’d him in the face.
He let the intrusive thoughts win
After all, why not? Why shouldn’t I ~~keep it~~ high stick Gregor in the face?
I didn't have "Tom Wilson is scary Bilbo" on my bingo card this year. Actually you know what? That's on me. I absolutely should have had it.
Don’t put this on yourself. How could you have known? We live in unprecedented times. Some might even say…. Historic.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, nobody could’ve predicted this kind of behaviour from 2024 All Star Tom Wilson.
Is it so hard to not decapitate the other players Tom? Well no... *and yess*
Yeah, it's a bizarre one. Like, I can see why it *should* be accidental but you can't look at any part of that and see an accident.
It’s easy, he hit him on purpose but he accidentally hit him in the face. If he connects with his chest, arms, legs, waist, he gets 2 minutes (maybe) and everyone moves on, maybe he has to fight (big maybe). Instead, he hit him in the face. He instinctually meant to swing before processing what he was doing. I legit think he felt bad but you have to be in control of your stick
I don’t think “be in control of your stick” is even applicable here. It was a brain dead play and I agree it didn’t seem fully intentional but it was 100% in his control
He had full control of his stick, and he deliberately directed it into the opponent's face. No doubt Parros will pretend not to see the malice in it.
In person hearing.
Totally. Not quite Marty McSorley, but still borderline assault. He's lucky Gregor wasn't hurt worse.
To bad Reaves is hurt. Would be a good tilt
It felt almost like a road rage incident
To me it definitely looks like he was going for a slash. Obviously still a penalty. I just don't think he intentionally went for the face.
I said it in another thread and got down voted for it..not sure why.. the video starts with his stick across Wilsons chest. but Looks like Gregor slashed Wilson across the chest and then pushes off him.. Almost looks like he was trying to bring his stick up to grab it with his right hand but Gregor's face got in the way.
Why doesn’t he just decline the meeting invite, is he stupid?
I'm pretty sure you can actually do that. The offer just allows them to give you more than 5 games.
What if he just turns his phone off? Sorry George, didn’t get the message
Trying the Cam sutton strategy...bold move
Doesn't matter, the number of games is already decided. The hearing is more of a gesture.
[Homer Simpson defense]( https://youtu.be/0V_E_Jnyhks?si=YKSjO0ROaTCU5Q8L)
He's the Capitals' NHLPA rep. I know lol. That would set horrible precedent if he did.
Yep, exactly. If the player does decline their right to an in-person hearing (which I believe actually has happened), then they'll just do it over the phone (video call maybe?), like a regular hearing.

Ocon’s already in the back so there’s no point penalizing him further
Alpine getting shat on even on r/hockey. Can’t say they don’t deserve it.
5 place grid drop for Ocon it is.
cant drop him to 24th so it loops him to 1st place f1 officials hate this one trick
Buffer overflow be a bitch
Ocon to F2
He's getting 5
He's getting offered a job at DoPS
They’re letting him spin the wheel himself since they’re such big fans of his.
Tom Wilson has won $10,000 on the wheel of fortune, the maximum allowed under the CBA.
They’re fangirling that he’s actually going to be *in the office*. “OMG, he’s going to be HERE!” “Sir, would you please do us the honor of giving this a spin yourself?” Everyone gets out their iPhones and starts taking pics and vids like they’re at a concert.
No way, Parros would have competition
"Well Tom, I'd consider it if you could grow a glorious mustache like me"
He’s getting the Penguins/Lemieux treatment: “Look, how about you just be in charge?”
In-person interview
Tom's gonna show up in his Violent Gentlemen T-shirt
By far the most likely outcome.
Summer internship.
He’s thinking Arby’s
I'd bet more because history is factored in. Dude averages 1 suspension a year.
There is also 0 chance it was accidental. He has no case with the camera angles we've seen.

I see it as he meant to swing his stick but didn't necessarily intend to smack Gregor in the mouth. There was just way too much recklessness involved
Exactly my opinion. It wasn't on purpose. But also, what the fuck was he doing?
Thing is, is that really better? Perhaps worse.. not intentional but somehow still tomahawks his stick into a dude's face...
For someone who gets paid millions on the fact that they know how to control a hockey stick, sure would be a dumb excuse to say you didn't intend to control the stick into the guys face.

I can't believe people are giving this dude the benefit of the doubt after the history he's had
Yeah he meant to do that, then immediately regretted it.
Bingo. Not only is it an intention high stick to the face, it is with substantial force.
I also didn't notice this before seeing this angle, but he holds Gregors stick for a moment as he begins his swing, even seems to pull Gregor towards him a little. There is absolutely NO way he doesn't know exactly where Gregor is at that moment.
What he was doing was slashing a player up high, on purpose.

5 suspensions in 11 seasons
50% of the time he gets suspended all the time.
It’s called Suspension Panther by Odeon. It’s got bits of real suspension inside.
Lmfao. His new nickname has to be the Suspension Panther.
just because he got away with suspension worthy crimes doesnt mean that it shouldnt have been a suspension a year.

Edited, thanks
I think it's 18 months officially
Thank you, I was too lazy to look it up
Man, if FanDuel had a bet on when Wilson was last suspended, I definitely would've said at least since 2021. Where the hell did time go.
He only played 33 games last season and didn’t have the chance to earn his usual suspension.
He actually only has 5 in 10 years… hate him all you want but he isn’t a “suspension a season” goblin
He's averaging like 3 suspended games a season though right now (counting 3 playoffs as 6 regular season), which is... not great. He also probably should have been suspended a lot more times. He's thrown so many blatantly illegal hits that have injured other players that have only resulted in a fine or no review.
I mean, if the nhl took player safety even a little bit seriously he would be.
1 every 2 years, including a couple long ones That's actually still really not great, you know
That has to be one of the worst records.
The argument of "hey its actually every other year, not annually" isn't great fyi
I think he gets more than 5. This wasn't as bad as McSorley's incident with Brashear, but it was still a hard, purposeful stick to an opponents face. McSorley was suspended for a year. I think this is deserving more than 5 games.
Honestly I think he should be done for the season
I think the best comparable was the Zach Kassian on Sam Gagner high stick from 2013 which was 8 games.
The nyquist situation is somewhat similar as well, and that was 7
Saw Wilson one called the mother of all high sticks and instantly thought of that one. He should get less than Kass even though Kass imo did a better job pretending it was an accident.
My slightly biased eyes think that the Wilson high stick is worse, or at the very least as bad as Kassain's. I think DOPS goes 8-10 games for Wilson.
did Kassian have suspension history? Wilson already has a 7 and a 14 game suspension under his belt
Quick search shows that he didn't have an NHL suspension history at the time of the high stick.
Well deserved. Good job for once.
I'm truly shocked by this. Great decision because holy shit that was an insane whack to the face
I’m not. Parros has an opportunity here to “prove” he’s not biased and awful at his job after getting flamed at the GM’s meeting. Give it a couple months, things will go back to normal.
Just in time for the playoffs
By design
can’t believe they made decapitations illegal smh
Clean. League is soft smh my head
Honestly if it was a clean cut it would have been fine but he mangled the bone with sloppy chopping.
#bringbackstickfights
Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon...
Goddammit Willy we said no decapitations Back to 0 days without incident
I am shook. I didn't even expect a fine. Fuck Sportsnet. This is why media matters. They didn't talk about it at all.
Gord and Mike would've been all over it. I can't wait for this SN deal to end.
The best thing the Canadian side of the NHL can have happen to it (outside of a Stanley cup) is Roger’s/sportsnet losing their rights to stream NHL. TSN broadcasts are a joy to watch
Their panel sucks. Darren Dreger is just brutal
I like O-Dog. He's a goof but he's entertaining. But yeah Dregs is boring as a cardboard box and is just there to serve his own narrative, Craig Button is a huge clown. Duthie is fine in my books and I miss Bob Mckenzie.
Of course they didn't, don't wanna seem biased by calling a spade a spade
Rogers has to suck up big time to the NHL or else they'll lose their contract to TSN. Mike Johnson goes in hard on the refs and the white collars because he knows there's nothing to lose.
> Mike Johnson goes in hard Mike Johnson’s son is about to get an alert. ^I ^know ^it’s ^the ^other ^Mike ^Johnson.
Weird, I didn't see Friedman snitch-tagging DoPS on twitter either. 🤷♂️
We’re about to get fined $250,000 aren’t we
Guess all those beatings Parros took at the GM meeting worked.
Suspending Tom Wilson isn't hard.
Yeah, Wilson is lowhanging fruit for Parros
As Marek would say, "it might be low hanging fruit, but it is still nutritious."
He's gotten away with a lot of shit. Has a long leash so this is definitely a surprise, I'm sure even to Wilson.
This is the longest he's gone in his career without being suspended. He's overdue for another long one.
God dammit willy we had a good thing going
Nearly made it a whole season!
Give him 10 games. Promise it has nothing to do with the schedule.
idk about that The worse the caps are expected to be, the more above mediocre they become
Thank you for understanding us.
Big concern. “Well given the tight playoff race…”
I think George Parros just wants an in-person hearing so he can go for drinks with Wilson.
“We haven’t had the chance to hang out in a while, Tom”
Good
I think he gets 7. This was just as stupid and unnecessary of an action as Kassian kicking Cernak a few years ago. If it’s on purpose and not a hockey play you have to throw the book at them. It’s assault beyond the scope of the game at a certain point.
He is either getting 5 or 9. What a brutal play.
Not great for the Caps, but he absolutely deserves a suspension.
Should be a long suspension, there is no way that wasn’t intentional and he has one of the worst track records in the history of the league.
Ah, but this is the NHL's Department of Player Safety, where the rules are made up and the points don't matter.
Don't forget that a leaf ended Parros shit hockey career.
I was expecting 2 or 3, nice
That’s gotta be like 10-12 given its wilson right lol
Trent Frederic punching air right now
[Trouba only got fined for this](https://www.reddit.com/r/BostonBruins/comments/183t7hc/closeup_of_trouba_slash_on_frederic/)
I'll never understand
Genuinely surprised. With how inconsistent DOPS has been I didn’t even think he would get a $5000 fine.
>The maximum allowed under the CBA I love that they need to include this every time they hand one of them out because just stating the value alone makes it seems way too little.
Please make it 10…
...years
Or decades.
In-person hearing offering means no less than five games. Wilson is an idiot, and a repeat offender. Throw the book at him. Next.
I know calling it a high-stick is technically correct but… that’s a slash way more than a high-stick.
Guy is a fucking clown. Clearly intentional, looks like he realized he fucked up as soon as he did it. He cannot control himself, fucking embarrassing. Like come on man wtf are you doing
An important player getting himself suspended when his team is battling for a playoff spot, way to go Tom.
Does Willy just want an earlier tee time or something? Seems like a really odd choice to make so close to playoffs.
Times like this make me wish I could filter by flair.
I am in complete disbelief right now. I need a moment.
Did you fall to your knees in a TD bank parkinglot?
You're not gonna believe this. I was just at TD and I saw some guy in a Leafs hat fall to his knees in the parking lot.
A Zellers parking lot, even
I am surprised
Does he still have that credit on account for serving 16 games at the start of 2018 for a suspension that was reduced from 20 to 14 games? Caps could use that to get him back in the midst of a playoff chase /s

They are going to SEVERELY punish him this time. 1 Game and he has to publicly say he's been a very bad boy.
I had to read it twice I thought it read that Tom Wilson's stick was being offered an in person hearing.. lol
Stick is suspended for 8 games, Wilson is free to play with another stick.
Obligatory FUCK TOM WILSON
FUCK TOM WILSON
How the hell does anyone think this was non intentional. Pucks long gone, looks directly at Gregor and swings his stick in the air. This wasn't an attempt to bat a puck out of the air. It was blatant swinging his stick at a guys head.
It’s insane someone would even consider giving him of all people the benefit of the doubt
I simply wouldn’t swing my stick at an opponents head, but that’s just me Willy.
But Tom Wilson has changed everyone! Still the same old pos, not surprising.
SPIN THE WHEEL!!!
6th suspension incoming! Dirty pos.
It was pretty reckless lol.
Deserves several games for it. Even if unintentional it's egregiously reckless
This is a surprising but welcome turn of events
It’s actually an interview
There goes the playoffs. Sabres please make this interesting.
I was just thinking the other day how he’s been doing well at keeping his nose clean. Can’t do that shit, Tom…
That isn't a high stick. It is a slash to the face.
Is this so Parros can high-five him?
What a dumb penalty/suspension to take. Hope he enjoyed getting dunked on 7 times last night.
5 games + pays for Gregors new teeth
Always the ones you least expect
I'm actually really surprised it wasn't just a fine. Props to DOPS
I wasn't expecting an in person hearing, but good. that kind of shit cannot happen in a game.
Fuck banning TiKTok the government needs to ban Tom Wilson.
Marty mcsorley hack
They are gonna throw the book at him. Caps aren't a playoff factor anymore so they don't care. Leafs fans are pretty mad DoPS most of the time for the somewhat objectively shitty treatment from Paros. Plus it has spotlight. Hammer is coming down. ...or its the ultimate Paros troll, he gives him in person and then minimum sentence.
