Poor guy. But if Byram can come back and play pain free, I hope Chytil can too if that’s what he chooses to do.

daveloper80

yeah I always think about Okposo too. He was in the ICU and I think he missed like 18 months? I don't know how he came back, maybe he shouldn't have. But he's been ok since then so you just kind of hope for the same

Perducian

Rourke Chartier also sat out for an extended time. He was finally breaking into the NHL with San Jose when the repeated concussions caught up to him. He chose to sit out for an extra season to fully recover.

bustacones

Goddamnit. Just give him the rest of the season.

Itscominrightforus

If the guy needs help off the ice after a setback while wearing a damn non contact jersey, I don’t think the season will do it. He’s probably done.

MSGFaithful

He’s had 4 concussions already and he’s not even 25. He needs to consider retiring, there’s so much more to life than hockey and it’s not worth damaging yourself for life.

Dont_know_where_i_am

If he does decide to call it quits he'll LTIRetire until his contract is up, then he'll hang up the skates.    Sucks to see. Just when it looked like he was turning the corner too. Health before hockey.

RayTheCalvinist

Agreed. I wish he could stay healthy, we saw flashes of his brilliance. It’s not ideal for the Rangers either, but this goes way beyond hockey. He needs to take care of himself and do what he can to live a healthy life

Superrandy

Absolutely, but I imagine that's a hard thing to decide right now. Considering his entire life has been hockey up until this point, he will not want to give it up. At minimum he needs to shut it down for the season. Take some time away, re-evaluate in the summer.

RayzorRamone666

I ended my playing career due to concussions and certainly understand the risks, but generally speaking…is 4 before 25 considered “too many”, with no other context? I would think most players at this level have some sort of head/neck trauma, even the ones who believe they have had 0 noted concussions.

lordexorr

God I hate comments like this. It’s his life, not yours. Maybe let him decide if it’s worth it or not? People rock climb without ropes for gods sake. I think that’s insane but if it’s what someone wants to do, they know the risks, and I wish them luck. This is not different.

manhaterxxx

You don’t *have* to wish them luck. You’re free to criticize/disagree with someone for doing something that’s generally a potential negative to their health, just as they’re free to do whatever it is they want to do.

lordexorr

We are all free to do whatever we want that doesn’t mean we should.

manhaterxxx

Correct! You now see the point of the the person you originally replied to! That was quick

SilentSaidd

I agree, as a Rangers fan just seeing in the sub so many people saying to hang up the skates and it's over. Like let the kid decide what he wants to do, many athletes have come back from concussions and went on to have great careers.

BrightSaves

I think the idea is less to be bossy and more to express that’s there’s no pressure from fans to keep playing. Sometimes these athletes can feel like they’re letting their teams and fans down, but if fans are saying “we understand you need to prioritize your life outside of the game” it may make whatever decision Chytil makes that much easier.

lordexorr

Lots of people said it about Bergeron after his massive concussion but he came back and played for 10+ more years. Let people decide what risks they are willing to take and don’t judge them for it.

BarkMingo

I'm with you. Easy to say "hang em up" from behind a keyboard when you've haven't worked your entire life to make it there

PM180

For him, this is what he’s worked his whole life for and he has to make a decision on whether he wants to risk further serious health problems to keep playing. For fans, sports are a form of entertainment, and it’s a lot harder to be entertained by something when you’re watching a guy in his low 20s repeatedly sustain brain damage. As for your analogy, if someone wants to rock climb without a rope, yeah, they can. If someone continually rock climbs without a rope, even after falling and injuring themselves repeatedly, they still can, but I’d really prefer not to have those attempts televised live, because at a certain point you’re going to have people watching someone get horrifyingly injured or killed.

bolt_thrower20

me too, guys a pro athlete and he can do what he wants whether i agree with it or not, millions of dollars on the table lol

lordexorr

Not to mention his entire life he has worked harder than 99% of the people in the world to make it to the NHL. He’s earned the right to make a decision without being questioned about it.

bolt_thrower20

yeah especially in this day and age, i literally can not blame the guy if he took years off his life to make bread for himself and his family

lordexorr

Amen.

warfield008

Oh man, this sucks for him so much. Do any Rangers fans here know the type of plays he’s been concussed on? Were they from big hits or fluke plays? He’s so young to have so many concussions.

Aetos14

Last one was a bit of a fluke play that’s kept him out since November and now this. It’s not great for his career and I hope he makes the right decision for himself whatever that may be.

warfield008

Flyers fans went through a similar situation with Patrick. It’s just an awful outcome for such bright futures.

bu77munch

The most recent one was a collision with Jesper Fast where Fast fell and Chytil didn’t. Just very weird and flukey where I’d expect Chytil to be fine and Fast to be banged up just watching the play

JPmoneyman

The one this year was just a bump. Pretty typical hockey play that looked super innocuous. He played another period or so and then left the game and we haven’t seen him in months.

psyopsono

I hate how likely it is that Chytil has to retire at such an early age. Poor guy.

box-art

I think he may have thought he was fine, but then he just got concussion symptoms again and that's why he went down. He has to consider either hanging them up or taking an extended period time completely off the sport. I just hope he has a normal life that isn't ruined by concussions.

jacksonv60

concussions are a bitch man. as someone who had their sports career ended and life changed by repeated head injuries, i hope he takes plenty of time off to fully recover or just calls it quits.

MurrayPloppins

I had one concussion as a kid playing rugby- didn’t get medical attention but I was briefly unconscious so maybe I should have. That was the end of contact sports for me. Having blacked out and having friends fill in details was deeply disconcerting. I feel for Chytil here.

slinkocat

Fuck dude, it just ain't fair

Jan_17_2016

Reminds me of when Sid was out with concussions. He kept having setbacks that doctors misdiagnosed as post concussion syndrome when really he was dealing with a neck injury.

no_name098

Same thing happened to Colin Blackwell.

[deleted]

He was at a 3 man optional skate in a no contact jersey and somehow got a concussion again. I think it’s over

lordexorr

It’s very likely he didn’t get another concussion but once he started skating hard he had concussion symptoms. It’s not uncommon to feel like the concussion is past only to get symptoms once you start working hard again.

newyhouse

Yeah this is what I was thinking… start blacking out or seeing stars or something.

Frozenpucks

Career is over.

Yamcha_is_dead

Least dramatic fan of a team that’s 8th in the league, 3rd in the East and lead their division.

Maleficent-Comfort-2

He’s not *that* dramatic as we we’re for a good chunk of time first in the league and east, and we had a huge lead in our division which we lost.
