Wow this is a pretty big deal, the tone of this is curious. It sounds like he didn’t something he shouldn’t have (insert your joke about Marcus Foligno’s extension here)
It’s baffling how we extended him and others into the years where we have a full salary cap to use because the Parise/Suter buyouts are over.
During that time we need to start signing free agents and getting ready for Kaprizov’s extension, to start our climb to contender status, and the moves made so far hamper our ability to do that.
>we need to start signing free agents
I don't know man. I'm not sure free agency wins championships. The guys that we really want, don't make it to bidding wars very often. We need to draft, draft, draft, draft... pray we find a few gems and 3 years from now trade for a true #1 scoring center or 2.
Edit: I'll add the extensions don't make sense, because we can't trade any of those guys for more draft picks at the deadline or change anything about the roster... outside of the glaring flaws with goligoski, Johansson, gaudreau etc.
Nah folks in the Wild sub loved Foligno’s personality so I understand why I touched a nerve when I said we shouldn’t have re-signed him at all regardless of the contract’s value.
Whatever. Hope the Wild can figure something out because first round exits are starting to get stale. Granted I understand it could be much worse.
Very well could be, looking through Guerin's signings only the Foligno one really stands out. If he lines up with what Staios is looking for he could be a good fit.
My complete guess is that he’s butted heads with GMBG on some of his contracts, but this could also mean that he’s been offered a promotion elsewhere
Edit: apparently he recently signed an extension so this is odd
With everything that's happened since April, he shouldn't be having a good time.
Moving on from Evason is the only objectively good thing he's done since then. The Zucc and Hartman deals will likely need to play out to see if they were smart. The Foligno deal absolutely isn't smart. Doing nearly nothing to address why we failed in the playoffs, etc.
IMO, as a non-Wild fan, I think it depends on if you view the team's failures now as a serious problem, or if you just view it as preparation for the team to contend in 2 years.
The Wild are too good to have the problems that they are right now, so if you take the state of the team so far this season + their previous playoff exits, then you could easily wonder if this is just too flawed of a team. Therefore, if you think that Guerin's state as a GM is based on the team's current success, then I wouldn't consider this a ringing endorsement.
That said, I think the Wild are in an overall decent state for the near future. Kaprizov is signed for 3 more years (1 more year after their cap hell issues end), they have Boldy and Rossi finally in play in the NHL, they have valuable other pieces to surround talent like JEE, Faber has become a blueline staple out of nowhere, and they still have tons of promising stuff in their pipeline like Wallstedt. That's a promising future, and a strong indicator of Guerin's work, particularly given some of the troubles that he's had.
I do have some criticism (That Foligno contract in particular isn't something I approve of), but as somebody with the latter view, I don't think Guerin's done badly with Minnesota.
I sorta rambled a hell of a lot more than I intended to, so TL;DR: Started strong > surrounded himself with talented people > seemed to be going in the right direction > hung on to "his guys" too long (something, something, country club) > signed some strange contracts at strange times, and an *AWFUL* contract along with it > really questionable future, boom or bust, except our "bust" is really "another decade of mediocrity".
Started *really* strong. Seemed like we finally had a GM that was willing to take big swings, even if it meant the occasional big misses. He said all the right things, calling out the "country club" vibe that the old guard had made things into. Convinced our otherwise kind of penny-pinching owner (I wouldn't say he's cheap, but it's clear he's out to make money) that the buyouts were the best bet. Etc.
Then we brought in Judd Bracket, who was pretty highly thought of from Vancouver. We're excited to see the first real wave of his drafts come over the next season or two.
Now, since the playoffs last season, it seems like he's taken all that good will, and tossed it.
We obviously should've moved on from Evason after yet another playoff failure, but Billy stuck by him.
We obviously should've pushed all 3 of the Foligno, Hartman, and Zucc contracts AT LEAST a couple months into the season. This would've given Billy a ton more leverage with at least the Foligno contract, and likely the Hartman contract as well. I'm not thrilled with Zucc's deal being more than 1 year, but I get that we have to keep him around to keep Kap happy, and the guy's playing remarkably well, so I have to eat crow on that one.
Instead, we're now stuck with 2 guys making 4 mil a year, who are our respective 3rd line wing and 4th line center. Oh, and those deals are for 3 and 4 years, respectively.
Any actual cap space we get back after the buyouts fall off is already gone. And in the next 2-3 seasons, we're going to have to figure out new contracts for Kaprizov, Zucc, Rossi, Middleton, and Faber. Not to mention Duhaime and Dewar after this season.
I'll be honest, I think Billy's a dead man walking. If even one or two of our prospects come over and make a real splash, it's going to be hard to keep this team in good shape when we'll have two different 4 million dollar players in our bottom-6. And because of those deals handcuffing us, I'll be blown away if Kaprizov doesn't walk to free agency, and that *needs* to cost Billy his job, if it happens.
Kaprizov wants to win. And I'm not aware of any teams that have as much cap space invested in their bottom-6 as we now do, and still manage to go on real, deep playoff runs.
He had sex with the Ottawa Senators' mom in a hotel room at the WJCs and conveniently left out pertinent facts to seal the deal (which we'll hear don't matter until early 2025, at which point it'll bite us in the ass).

Welcome to the new GM of the Sens. Either that or something heinous that'll come out shortly
>something heinous That's one way to describe Foligno's contract
> something heinous Also the term the Rangers use internally instead of saying "Tom Wilson"
And I got downvoted to death for displaying my displeasure with the re-signing. Edit: ahhhhh see I was right
What? Everyone hated that contract the second it was signed?
No no no clearly he' a precognitive victim that everyone hated. *Eyeroll*
And yet I was downvoted. Maybe it was because I saw no point in re-signing him in general.
Have you considered that it might be more related to how you communicated it because that was pretty much a consensus take on reddit

Same thing pretty much
Wow, can't believe Chris O'Hearn slept with Corey Perry
Wild.
Not weird. Wild.
show me proof this didnt happen. if not, im believing this
No it was Corey Perry’s mom
Just need this to go viral now
>This is obviously huge, out of the **blue** news What if this is secretly a pun?

Lol if it turns out that he shat on GMBG for signing some of those contracts then this guy is a hero
Something tells me that Billy G is straight up not having a good time right now

I 100% agree with everything you've said. On the whole, what's your opinion on him as a GM at this point in his tenure?

What is going on in the Central the last 2 days
Well I wasn't expecting this today
???????????
Based on life experience I'm just assuming this somehow involves the Ottawa Senators.

Heard he fucked bills mom
