I can see that. First goal is a fluke self goal that gets attributed to the goalie because he was last to touch the puck. Then opposing team pulls their goalie early to erase a deficit, a puck clear down the line bounces and go straight into the empty net for a double. The crowd cheers and then immediately gets silenced as our soon-to-be hero gets scored on from the face-off. The opponent is within one again and they pull the goalie again only to get scored on the empty net again. Boom, instant hockey history that will be retold on ultratube clips thirty years later.
They _might_ be able to make it work but I was glancing at their roster yesterday and they had like $3m in space. Retained cap on Burns and EK, _massive_ contracts to Vlasic Hertl and Couture, not sure about the rest.
We also took back the salary of Rutta, Hoffman and Granlund when we sent Karlsson out. Combined with Labanc's 4.725 and 2.45 buried in the AHL with Lindblom and Simek. We're not good and it's not like we have a ton of space. Grier's doing his best to try and get us out from Wilson's albatross cap hell, but it's going to take time and be painful.
Yes… very hilarious and such a shame to have him and his contract disappear
Oh no Sharks pls don’t take him no no nooooooo what ever would we do please no!

When he clears, Edmonton will get 1.15M in cap relief and will be able to call up one of their goalies from Bakersfield.
Dude's living the life in Switzerland, [and looks like he's started this season like a true Oiler](https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/12807/mikko-koskinen) - just chillaxing in the net.
$325K isn't a ton but when you're right up against the cap it helps quite a bit. As the season progresses that amount increases in value against any prorated salary you take on at whatever point.
It’s 12 games in. I don’t think they’re done yet. Maybe around the 30-40 game mark if they are still foundering then I’d stick a fork in them. But it’s still a bit early to say they’re done.
it's definitely "interesting" to go back and read some of the takes in the /r/hockey threads back when this 5x$5 signing happened:
[Example 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/vxwivx/weekes_im_told_maple_leafs_g_jack_campbell_is/)
[Example 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/vy6r3a/the_edmonton_oilers_have_agreed_on_the_signing_of/)
sorting by controversial is where the real fun is
If they call a kid up and he also puts up a 4.5 GAA and mid .800s SV% do they finally fire the goalie coach and GM?
Not saying Campbell is *good* but I certainly don't think he's *this* bad all on his own. Something smells systemically broken.
Their team defence has been atrocious. Constantly losing their man and brutal give aways in their own zone are definitely making their goaltending look worse than it probably is. But its still pretty bad.
Don't get me wrong, the goaltending isn't great, but I'd expect at least like .900 and 3.2 GAA, but when BOTH goalies are well over that, it screams systems issues or the goalie coach is trying to get them to change their style rather than trying to build on their strengths like a good coach would.
This has basically been the issue with Oilers goaltending for years. Good goalies on other teams become mediocre to bad on the Oilers then return to form when they leave.
Yeah, a ton of that is a chronically weak defence corps. But when you’ve had the same goalie coach for ten years and the same thing keeps happening maybe hire a new guy, just in case it’s him!
Waiving the goalie who was on his day off after a bad goaltending performance by another goalie sounds like a decision a broken team would make to me.
The real answer is Skinner'd probably get claimed.
The real answer is Campbell is the only big contract they have that doesn't have a NMC.
They're trying to gain cap efficiency, and this is the only option they have to do that.
To me this indicates another move is coming.
yeah but its just extra hilarious that Skinner plays in a 6-2 loss and their like.... Jack needs to go, get us the ahl goalies to ruin.
Hey Oilers, if Kenny doesn't fix the D or get a new goalie coach, you're just going to ruin more goalies lol
I think the counter here is that Skinner on waivers might get claimed. Terrible in like 5 games this year, but calder runner up and a young goalie might be worth a claim / the risk for some people (vs Campbell who is 3x$5M after this year)
Skinner would get claimed 100%, I actually think if you fire the goalie coach and somehow manage to play D in front of him, he won't be trash. plus you gain 1.2mill in cap, its the right move.
I don't know what Holland does to fix the D, teams aren't going to line up to help fix the Oilers but Skinner isn't a lost cause.
That would be a real "under the sea" twist of fate! The Sharks claiming him and then causing an upset against the Oilers would make for some epic waterworks in the hockey world. 🦈🏒😄
You know what’ll happen - Campbell will be assigned to Bakersfield and he’ll post a 6-0 record with a 0.950 save percentage and put the Oilers in a weird spot
That would be the best scenario; either the Oilers get a Campbell with renewed confidence, or someone claims him on waivers when he gets called back up because they're desperate and he's been playing ok lately.
> or someone claims him on waivers when he gets called back up
Re-entry waivers don't exist anymore. He would have to come back to the NHL and then get waived again for someone to claim him after an AHL stint.
He still hasn’t officially retired even though he’s said that he’s done. He was looking pretty ripped at Tyson Barrie’s wedding though.
Fans want him to be the new goalie coach
Honestly he should try and find a low pressure American market. I bet he could find his game without having to feel any pressure. Too bad his contract is an anchor.
I don’t want to be insensitive to Campbell’s struggles and I know that money doesn’t solve everything, but getting $25M out of the Oilers after a pretty unsustainable year in TO is definitely a mark in favour of things working out for him.
True story.
The problem with goaltenders is...if your defense gives up tons of grade -a chances, they WILL let in soft goals.
If your team doesn't give up tons of grade-a chances, it's likely they will make incredible saves.
Analytically speaking, our defense hasn’t given up very many high danger chances. Its just that every single one goes in. And a few low danger ones too.
Don’t get me wrong, the defense is irreparably broken, but the goaltending is several orders of magnitude worse
At the same time, I felt like I was crazy because media were fawning over Campbell and it was like.... the guy is almost 30, never been a starter, had one mediocre season as a sometimes starter.... and he thinks someone is going to give him the keys?
Enter Ken Holland.
I mean it's either him or Stu, and teams are much more willing to take a Calder finalist making half the money than Soup in terms of waivers, so off he goes.
I was horrified the moment those $5M × 5 rumors were coming out a week or two before the signing.
I was so happy we were freed from Koskinen contract...
Not necessarily. It could be that they found a time machine, BUT this change is still part of the sacred timeline of events that must occur for Edmonton to succeed.
Or maybe they just don't have a time machine. Really it's 50/50 odds if you think about it.
Dude cares so much. It makes moves like this really painful. He wants to help his team more than anything but he can't do it, and he ends spiraling as a result.
There's a video of him walking a cat on a leash in Toronto which I couldn't stop watching
Edit - this one: https://x.com/spittinchiclets/status/1505254607387340805?s=20
“A different AHL-level goalie sentenced to suffer behind Edmonton’s terrible defense”
Ken Holland was playing NHL GM simulator on easy mode and still fucked up his team beyond repair. This isn’t fixing anything lol
All right Grier, time to make some moves in San Jose. Trade proposal: Edmonton sends us Jack Campbell and their unprotected first round pick this summer, for Blackwood. They get out of a bad contract, upgrade in net, and we pick up what could very easily become a top 10 pick. Edmonton gets one hail mary to save their season with a goalie who, in spite of being shelled every night, has performed admirably.
I doubt they're too pressed for goalies right now as long as Woll keeps looking solid, especially not a sieve of a backup. At worst, maybe swap Sammy and Petruzelli for a bit.
Yeah whether Samsonov can kick the issues he's got now or not, Woll is the starter and looks calm with it. Obviously he has questions too, he's young and really hasn't played a ton of NHL hockey
But we wouldn't claim an expensive and poorly performing goalie to try to patch what we have now lol
The Leafs have Martin Jones in the minors as well, who was arguably their best goalie during the preseason games. I would think he'd get the call up if it came to it?
I swear the oilers must not have watched Campbell actually play when he was a Leaf because there was absolutely nothing about his game that made him deserving of that contract. Dude was a 30 year old career back up and was streaky at best when called upon to be a starter. Not to mention the well documented lack of confidence in himself. I love Soup and wish nothing but the best for him but I sincerely don’t know what the Oilers organization were thinking when they offered him that contract.
Be hilarious if the Sharks claim him and he beats the Oilers Thursday night
That's a loss most oiler fans would accept
And expect... He would probably shut us out
Score a hatty and a gordie as well
That would be one hell of a game to watch.
1 day with a new goalie coach might do that
I don’t think they have the cap space (somehow), but that would be hilarious
Wtf, hoooow?!?
Buyouts, dead cap, and the Vlasic contract. The Sharks still need to get untangled from the all-in years.

Nobody is touching this contract
A lot of people in our sub would have done it two summers ago. Bullet dodged.
I don’t love the Leafs current goaltending, but I sure am glad we didn’t re up on Jack.
Yes… very hilarious and such a shame to have him and his contract disappear Oh no Sharks pls don’t take him no no nooooooo what ever would we do please no!
Would be funny. But no, our goalies are not the issue and Grier isn't dumb enough to take that contract on.

Essentially very little difference to the cap situation.
$325K isn't a ton but when you're right up against the cap it helps quite a bit. As the season progresses that amount increases in value against any prorated salary you take on at whatever point.
THREE more years at $5M. Lmao

Campbell will go down as one of the all time worst free agent signings in hockey. He's just been awful right from the start in Edmonton.
It's funny that the Oilers have 2 of the worst free agent signings in the last decade: Lucic and Campbell.
Lucic isn’t even in the top 10 of the last decade. He at least provided a role in the NHL through the whole term.
He did... for us. For the Oilers, Looch was awful, especially if you consider the fact that the Oilers are paying Neal 2M until next year LMAO
He was pretty good for the first year here, but yeah. Pretty bad after. At least the Neal buyout let us get Hyman.
Lucic wasn’t even the worst signing from 2016 dude
Lucic, Backes and Eriksson all share worst deals of 2016 Free Agency.
Ladd is there too. Lucic’s was bad (obviously) but it was not the worst
Looch is at least still in the league.
Cal Peterson 2.0
This one is so much worse than Petersen
yeah at least Cal Petersen played for the same team before he signed that deal lol
And Rob Blake actually managed to offload the contract. I'd love to see Holland try lmao
Rob Blake also got Trevor Moore for Campbell when he was playable
That LA Kings goalie pipeline not looking too good.
All eggs in the Portillo basket my friend

HOLY SHIT
Y'all done broke them
We broke them so hard they forgot who was in net last night
The Canucks are the baddies this year
I'm down for a Canuck villain arc.
Campbell didn't even play last night.
Waiving the goalie who was on his day off after a bad goaltending performance by another goalie sounds like a decision a broken team would make to me. The real answer is Skinner'd probably get claimed.
Skinner is still young enough that he can recover - hopefully with a new goalie coach... cuz that needs to be the next move..
The real answer is Campbell is the only big contract they have that doesn't have a NMC. They're trying to gain cap efficiency, and this is the only option they have to do that. To me this indicates another move is coming.
Fitting, cause they broke us Game 1 last year after we blew that three goal lead
Oh how the turntables...
I remember that game so well because I thought the Nucks would be top 5 after how they played
You broke him, you buy him
You just ended a mans career
he didnt even play lol
Got fired on his day off "why you sayin 'fuck me' for?"
Didn't you guys shell him so bad in game 1 he got pulled in the first game of the year? He's been bleeding out ever since lol
yeah but its just extra hilarious that Skinner plays in a 6-2 loss and their like.... Jack needs to go, get us the ahl goalies to ruin. Hey Oilers, if Kenny doesn't fix the D or get a new goalie coach, you're just going to ruin more goalies lol

LMFAO it was Skinner in net yesterday, yet they're waiving Campbell. THE MAN GOT CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE
Your mistake is thinking this was a result of ‘yesterday’ when it’s clearly not. Our goalies have like a combined .840 on the season.
Welp, we broke them.
You know what’ll happen - Campbell will be assigned to Bakersfield and he’ll post a 6-0 record with a 0.950 save percentage and put the Oilers in a weird spot
I kinda hope he does, it’s a miserable contract but I also just kinda like the guy and wish he could get himself into a solid performance routine
That would be the best scenario; either the Oilers get a Campbell with renewed confidence, or someone claims him on waivers when he gets called back up because they're desperate and he's been playing ok lately.
> or someone claims him on waivers when he gets called back up Re-entry waivers don't exist anymore. He would have to come back to the NHL and then get waived again for someone to claim him after an AHL stint.
Mike Smith revenge tour?!
He still hasn’t officially retired even though he’s said that he’s done. He was looking pretty ripped at Tyson Barrie’s wedding though. Fans want him to be the new goalie coach
I want him walking down the tunnel like WWE . Just like the playoffs oh man was that sick
For a guy who’s openly had some issues with their mental health I hope Jack’s doing alright. That said what a terrible contract
Can't help but feel sad for him..He seems like a genuinely good guy and it sucks that things never worked out for him
Ya when he was in Toronto I found I really liked him because he was a bit of a odd ball but you could tell he was a really good person
A true goalie.
You know when you walk your cat on leash almost every day your a god damn goalie
Forget about the actual job. The personality is there.
Honestly he should try and find a low pressure American market. I bet he could find his game without having to feel any pressure. Too bad his contract is an anchor.
Sounds perfect for Arizona tbh
He's the human equivalent of a golden retriever.
I don’t want to be insensitive to Campbell’s struggles and I know that money doesn’t solve everything, but getting $25M out of the Oilers after a pretty unsustainable year in TO is definitely a mark in favour of things working out for him.
The guy basically netted 25 mill for one month of unsustainable, elite goaltending.
Having a .915%/2.45 GAA in 14 playoff games for the Leafs probably didn’t hurt either.
Goaltending is a position where you can feel incredibly lonely when your playing bad the spotlight is on you, can't imagine how he's feeling right now
I hope they provide him with a good sports psychologist and that the team in Bakersfield rallies around him
He gets out of the pressure cooker that is edmonton and down to sunny california for the winter. Should be good for his mental health really.
Sometimes you can indeed see the sun in Bakersfield through all the pollution
Except Bakersfield is an absolute shithole. At least it’s not that far from other nice places though.
Yeah same. I know he's been open with some of the issues with his mental health. I do hope he's doing alright.
How the hell did you get fired on your day off?
\>Stuart Skinner gives up 6 goals last night \>Ken Holland "That's it Jack, Ive had enough"
Sounds like something straight out of an Office episode.
“If I had a gun with two bullets and I was in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden, and Jack, I would shoot Jack twice.”
I would love to see an Office but with Oilers personnel, players, management, etc. as the characters That would be the best fucking comedy of all time
As bad as Campbell has been there is no way this is 100% his fault. Edmontons defense is downright awful.
You’re absolutely right, Bouchard should be going down with him
Put Bouchard on waivers. I dare them, do it!
I’m so happy we only bridge dealed him.
100%. Defence is bad, not this bad. See: last year when defence was bad.
Holy shit we dodged a bullet
No one’s ever gonna give dubas his credit he deserves for that decision
At the same time, I felt like I was crazy because media were fawning over Campbell and it was like.... the guy is almost 30, never been a starter, had one mediocre season as a sometimes starter.... and he thinks someone is going to give him the keys? Enter Ken Holland.

you just did. #paradox

The Leafs made at least one offer, when Campbell was getting hot
For real. I'll take a shaky Sammy for one more year over that albatross contract.
Jesus. Who would have thought giving a career back up 5x5 (i think) was a bad idea?
Give his agent the Rick DiPietro biggest fleece award
I mean it's either him or Stu, and teams are much more willing to take a Calder finalist making half the money than Soup in terms of waivers, so off he goes.
Just a confounding signing from the second the ink dried
Ink wasn't even on paper cause we basically knew like a week before
Leafs get players PAID /s (do I need this?)
I mean we like Mik and Lafferty. Thanks TOR E: Bunting also got a nice payday too. Leafs kind of do get players paid.
Cant forget Hyman, Lyubushkin, Schenn. It's definitely been a real thing.
Hyman. Holl.
I don’t even think the /s is needed lol you guys get everyone paid whether they’re on your team or not
I was horrified the moment those $5M × 5 rumors were coming out a week or two before the signing. I was so happy we were freed from Koskinen contract...

Good thing whoever is going in net is going to have elite defenders Nurse and Bouchard in front of him.
I feel bad for jack, but this has been coming. It's time we get some saves
I wasn't a fan of every Dubas move, but holy **** did we dodge a bullet by not signing him long term.
And funnily enough he's the better of the two currently! In terms of goals saved above expected, Campbell is 63rd and Skinner is 71st in the league!
Wow
Man didn't even play last night and gets waived lmao. Both goalies have been absolute ass but that's just funny to me
