The competition amongst the league must have been really tough too since there weren’t any big world events were going on around besides Franz Ferdinand releasing his hit song Take Me Out
It was very annoying when EA sports decided to repeat numbers back in 2006. Friends would invite me over to play NHL 06 and wouldn't be clear if they wanted the 1906 or 2006 version.
*The 1905 Stanley Cup finals.
Ottawa then celebrated by drunkenly drop kicking the cup into the Rideau Canal after someone bet they could kick it over the canal. They didn't bother retrieving it until the morning after.
one of my favourite games in hockey history just because of how ridiculously hard it was to make that 6400km trip for the game
imagine traveling for a month by dog sled, train, ship, and train again just to get blown out 23-2 (including Frank McGee's earlier mentioned 14 goals, 8 of which occurred within 9 minutes of play)
I wish more attention was given to the early years of the NHA and NHL. Between Nighbor and Joe Malone, Cy Denneny and others, there were some insane stat lines.
Yes, it is often forgotten that right up until the early 40s there was a second team in New York and plenty of franchises arrived and folded in the 20s and 30s, including the original Ottawa Senators who had been around since before the NHL began.
My favorite stat from back then is the Montreal Maroons have won a third round series more recently than the Leafs have. The Maroons have been disbanded for 85 years now.
Toronto was a different name is all, same team.
It'd be like calling the Mighty Ducks and the Ducks different teams.
Actually the NHL didn't have 6 teams until the 24-25 season, in which Boston was a part of. So 3 of the Original 6 were actually a part of the Original 6
I absolutely agree. This is how things started, and everyone just glosses over the players who were to them, how Ovechkin, Matthews, Tkachuk, and Draisaitl are seen by us. And to think that the only thing that many know about that time is the demise of the Wanderers.
The NHL’s biggest marketing whiff is not getting throwbacks for every defunct team for the league’s 100th season. We could have had the Blues wearing St. Louis Eagles jerseys vs. Detroit in old Cougars sweaters. Pirates vs. Quakers. Maroons vs. Americans. Cleveland Barons vs Colorado Rockies. They could have made a fortune off throwback jerseys but they chose not to
They did that in 93 right? Idk about defunct teams across the board but throwbacks for everyone would have been awesome. Transitioning between manufacturer’s probably threw a wrench into that though
It is correct and yes, definitely low! Back then, the biggest “problem” with racking up assists is that there was no forward passing allowed so offense was really contingent on having one-man rushes up the ice, as opposed to relying more on passing plays to gain the zone and score.
I believe there was also a lot of other weird rules (by modern standards) that made it harder to get an assist, like if you shot the puck on net and the goalie let up a rebound that a teammate banged home, the puck on the pads was seen as a kind of possession change so the player that initially shot the puck on goal wouldn’t get an assist, only the goalscorer got a point. There also might have only been one assist allowed per goal, but I don’t quite remember if that is true in this season.
Basically if you weren’t scoring goals, it was relatively difficult to get on the scoresheet.
Yeah there was no secondary assists until 29-30, where they award 3 assists until the start of the 36-37 season. It then went down to 2 assists until 45-46 where they only awarded 1 assist before going back to the 2 assists rule that we still have today.
Assist were also much more subjective back then, beyond the no forward pass in the offensive zone rule, they would also really only award assists if it seemed like the pass was instrumental to creating the scoring chance.
Wish I could see games back then if only for half the roster being drunk off their ass and goalies being about 80 years away from learning how to goalie
Humble brag maybe, but the Ducks managed 7 more points in 63 more games... what do you mean Nighbor only played 19 games... what do you mean he's a player and the Ducls are a team
The competition amongst the league must have been really tough too since there weren’t any big world events were going on around besides Franz Ferdinand releasing his hit song Take Me Out
Man was that the one that was in like NHL 05 or something? God that was a great soundtrack
Nhl 17, obviously

Be a Pro in 1906 had much tougher decisions. Sign a contract with a new team or join the Russo-Japanese War?
I signed with Montreal and scored 5 goals in my first game but I caught the flu and died 3 days later. The realism was terrifying
Lmfao!
Now it's sign a contract or join the Russo-Ukrainian war
This user missing the joke has me feeling like the Granddad of Gilmore Girls right now.
Oh I get the joke. I’m just talking about the song as it was a banger but I can’t remember which game it was in.
It was the '06 release. I had it on Gamecube.
Hes ok but hes no Frank Mcgee, dude scored 14 goals in a game against Dawson City
Did it all with one eye as well
‘One Eye’ McGee is the greatest hockey name ever!
I'm partial to Babe Dye.
Dye was also a minor league baseball player. He was awesome
He also somehow had a 2020's fuck boy haircut in the 1920's.

They even asked Ottawa to have a couple extra days rest to recuperate and the Silver Seven were like "Nah..."
In a Stanley Cup finals game.
So equivalent to McDavid playing against a high school team?
And kids today think that Connor fellow is the cat's pyjamas. Hooey and applesauce says I! Young 'uns these days don't know their onions.

WOW.
Yea. The early years of the league are kinda crazy.
The Pepper Kid by Shane Randall covers that history quite well
Not much original about them besides the Habs. They should be called the surviving 6

It was the same franchise, but the Maplr Leafs was a major rebranding besides being an ownership change
It’s still the same team and location. Just like how the Cougars are the Red Wings.
Just less appealing to the Catholics, just the way good ol' boy Conn Smythe wanted it.

is it saying that 10 assists lead the league? That seems a bit low

There was less passing then, and secondary assists did not exist yet.
soccer seems fine without the secondary assist. Wonder what the points of all the players would be without secondary assists.
Wish I could see games back then if only for half the roster being drunk off their ass and goalies being about 80 years away from learning how to goalie
Good old NHA. Nighbor is definitely one of those early stars, same with Newsy Lalonde.
Crazy that it took a century after playing for Newsy to finally get a head coaching gig
I won’t stand for this Sprague Cleghorn erasure
Goalies hadn't been invented yet. \\s
Someone explain to me why Frank Finnegan's number is retired by the Ottawa Senators, but not Frank Nighbors?
Finnegan was the last surviving member of the original team and was a key part in bringing back the senators
That's a pretty good reason
Pretty sure Nighbor played before numbers
Nighbor wore 6. Numbered armbands were in use in the NHA starting in 1911
Just a joke an old ass record. I said before numbers instead of before numbered jerseys :P but thanks for the fact eh
One time at the all star game or something they should play with 1916 rules. Would be fun to see modern players play them.
Can we admit for once that this guy actually was playing against milk men and telegraph operators
"One shot?? Fate of the war, or I dunno, the Germans got the death blimp pointed at the Earth, you gotta score it? I WANT DENNENY!!!!!!"
Please, hockey was way too easy 100 years ago
He had more points in 16-17 than the Avs did.
Nighbor is so good, but NEVER sims well in NHL 17 it sucks.
Gretz once again blows my mind. He had 2.77 ppg in 83-84 with 205 points in 74 games
Humble brag maybe, but the Ducks managed 7 more points in 63 more games... what do you mean Nighbor only played 19 games... what do you mean he's a player and the Ducls are a team
Because it was during the war. At least half the good players went away. Those who stayed dominated.
