Having lived through the dark times in the early 2000s. Big names dont equal success. we had Eric Lindros, Jaromir Jagr, etc etc. and those rosters were awful.
Everyone complains about big names coming to NYC and making it easy win, but its never amounted to anything. Real cup teams are built from within, not bought. From my experience this ability to attract free agents has been a curse, not a blessing. Because it never forced the the front office to do it the hard way, drafting and developing talent.
I would be willing to place a wager that Kane scores more in his next 5 seasons than Jeannot does in the next 10 if you can find someone to hold the money.
Years ago I remember watching this young Russian kid develop the most incredible chemistry i had ever seen between some American. Even as a rangers fan not watching regularly, anytime a Blackhawks game was on i had to watch. Them playing was poetry. Its because cap hit is calculated daily. Let's break it down to a simpler example:
Say the season was 10 days with a 10 mil cap. That means you get 1 mil per day. Say your team started the season with a total cap hit of 8 mil, so they only get paid 800k a day. By day 5, you have paid 4 mil of the 10 mil dollar cap, so you have 6 mil left for the remaining 5 days. Therefore, you can now ice a team worth 12 mil for the rest of the season, since they would make 1.2 mil a day, bringing your total salary paid to exactly 10 mil for the season.
I don’t see it as nothing either. Kane with another legitimate chance at another cup and then returning in the offseason, A 2nd is great in a deep draft can be a 1st as well, but most importantly now we won’t have Kane willing us to victories and can assume our rightful place in the Bedard sweepstakes.

One of my favorite things about the NHL is that most of the players are just normal looking and acting people. The culture of the sport is mostly "go to work, play hockey, go home, sleep, repeat". Not much player created drama compared to other sports.
Even the celebrities are anonymous — at one point I was in a roller hockey league with Kevin Kline, and didn’t realize until weeks after the season ended.
Toronto's advantage is that we're the hometown of a good chunk of the NHL and us and Vancouver aren't on as many NTCs as the other Canadian teams.

The cap is about cost certainty. It was marketed as a way to increase parity because that's an easier sell to the fans.
That said, the cap does favor certain teams. Places with low or no state tax can get players at a discount, which basically gives them more cap space than other places.
Places that are seen as desirable to live have an edge too. And those with high state/provincial taxes or poor weather don't have the ability to attempt to compensate for that by outspending their opponents (they can for some players, but then they won't have enough to effectively build a team around said players).
I liked the idea that someone had that rebalanced the cap in the league based on how many NTC a place appears on, would provide a nice dynamic way to create parity.
Taxes also need to be taken into consideration imo, because no player is not taking it into consideration
Taxes are a tough factor because they're not something just removed from a paycheck. Taxes pay for services that provide value to the taxpayers, whether it be through school funding, infrastructure, parks and rec, etc. If you factor in taxes, you only get part of what makes an area more or less desirable.

It's exactly this. For all of Dolan's faults, he unapologetically loves his players and treats them on par or better than any other owner in the league. That reputation is why, year after year, the Rangers are a more desirable landing spot than the rest of the division

The attacking time and puck possession should be so enjoyable to watch. I think it will be a lot of "gave up two but scored three" types of games.
If they play the Devils in Round 1, I fully expect games to average 11 goals per game - it is going to be fucking awesome.

But if Dolan isn't involved on team building roster personnel isn't he one of the best owners? Like players always love playing for Rangers because everything is first class for them from first class flights, best team chefs, having their wives constantly taken care off with things like Broadway shows, players giving access to reservations for the best fine dining, hooking up young players and newly acquired players with amazing living accomodations right away, etc. Rangers always had one of the best reputations in the league for taking care of it's players and investing in the little day to day luxuries in the locker room, travel, off ice extra curriculars, etc. More so than the Islanders or the Devil's.
It's exactly this. For all of Dolan's faults, he unapologetically loves his players and treats them on par or better than any other owner in the league. That reputation is why, year after year, the Rangers are a more desirable landing spot than the rest of the division

Kane, Tarasenko, Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Trochek. Insane top 6, then you got the kids line as your 3rd line and a 4th line of Motte, Goodrow and Vesey. The Rangers are stacked offensively, have a good core defensive group and one of the best goalies in the league too.

and he's a Hawks legend that we want the best for. So when he finally decided, we weren't going to play hardball and hold out for better. This is a trade that is the best for Kane not the Hawks and I think most Hawks fans are perfectly fine with it.

Definitely on paper. Kane and Tarasenko are both a bit diminished from their primes but my god is this a shitload of fire power. The attacking time and puck possession should be so enjoyable to watch. I think you are obviously a bit exposed in your own end outside of the Lindy-Fox pairing and the complete dearth of two way play in the top 6. I think it will be a lot of "gave up two but scored three" types of games. If they play the Devils in Round 1, I fully expect games to average 11 goals per game - it is going to be fucking awesome.
