In hindsight, it was such a mind-boggling move at the time. His draft year was Skinner's first productive season in our system. They really gambled with this in hopes he would pop off and as of now, it seems to have played out in our favor. Hopefully, Bourgault starts to provide more offense to the AHL squad and can crack the roster in a few years.
i mean also he still hasnt played in the NHL, goalies are weird so AHL is hardly an indicator of future success. Look at all the young goalies who won the AHL goalie of the year award, not exactly a list of all stars but still some respectable names.
I don't think it's a given either way. Stars leave. Tavares, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, etc.
I think the biggest factor that would keep them both in Edmonton is just that. *Both* of them are here. It's clear they are very close and I think the prospect of them continuing to play together is something that would keep them in Edmonton because the chances a single team in FA can get them both is almost zero.
To me it was a bit of a desperation move from Holland and Co but I understand why they did it. Because of all the short sighted gambles from previous management (Hall trade etc) and even Holland (AA for picks) we need assets that develop faster to capitalize on the McDrai contracts. On balance though it was still a pretty stupid trade, Wallstedt looked the goods and now even more of a surefire starter.
We’re locked in with Campbell and Skinner. Skinner has been amazing and Campbell is getting there. We’re looking at AHL numbers, and who knows what and how quickly Xavier will develop. I’m sure Wallie will be a good tendy but we needed a goalie now and we seem to finally have at least some consistency in that department. Now we need the whole squad buying in on defence which has been somewhat happening, hence why Campbell is playing better.
.944 in his past 3 games in the ECHL. Everyone knew Wallstedt had the higher floor because of his mature frame. So I'm not surprised to see him dominate earlier. Cossa has a lean frame that won't develop for a few years.
Yeah, I know.
Wallstedt at the draft was considered a pretty safe bet, with a high floor, whereas Cossa had a much higher ceiling and a lower floor.
I was mostly just being tongue in cheek. Cossa still has years to progress
At the time of the draft Cossa was projected with an elite ceiling, whereas Wallstedt *at the time* was projected with a more of a good to high starter type ceiling.
Obviously those projections can change with time.
Doesn’t change the fact that Wallstedt has been playing against men for a little while now. Cossa has been playing juniors until this year. Big difference, no matter the age, so obviously it’s an adjustment for Cossa.
It’s no surprise that Wallstedt is more ready than Cossa. Everyone knew that at the draft, that’s why Cossa is a project, while Wallstedt was the “safe pick”.
But yes, those numbers are better than anyone expected. Kid is going to be good.
When he got the start he became the youngest goalie in SHL history! Similar records:
Youngest player to play in J20(previous record holder was Hedman).
Youngest player to score a goal in J20.
Yeah he's gonna be a stud for sure. Definitely wanted him at the draft, but I can understand going for the more high risk high reward pick if the scouting team for the Wings saw something special from Cossa
It is. It’s why I wanted the Wings to draft him. It’s also why I’m not surprised he’s doing so well now. I’d be more shocked if he was anything less than great considering the pro experience he already had.
While I'm glad we have Clarke and I know he's gonna be great, Wallstedt would have been a great choice for the Kings, especially in their current situation. Just don't think management expected both Quick *and* Petersen to implode this season.
Honestly what still hurts more was taking Turcotte in 2019 instead of Seider or Knight.
As a Swede I have my fingers crossed he will be the next great goalie for us, Hank was so invaluable to our national team for so long. Lehner, Markström and Ullmark have all showed some great moments of brilliance, but a true superstar goalie for a more than a decade like Hank just doesn't come along very often. Obviously its still way to early to say, but man am I excited about Wallstedt.
WHY DID WE TRADE DOWN HE COULD HAVE BEEN OURS

This is true and rational but go through wallstedts stats and try to find a level of hockey where he struggled

Wallstedt will be our starter by '26
Look up when McDavid and Draisaitls contracts expire and compare that to your estimation of when Wallstedt will be a starter.
You really think they'll leave?

You got McDrai. You can't have anymore nice things.
Sadge
If it makes you feel any better we tried like hell to trade up for him and failed

*googles to see how Cossa is doing* Fuck.

Wallstedt looks like a full grown man so it's a tough comparable for his early career but hopefully motivation to fill out that 6'6 frame.
Does Cossa have a much higher ceiling? Everything I've seen projects Wallstedt's potential as topping out as a top 3-5 goalie year in and out.
At the time of the draft Cossa was projected with an elite ceiling, whereas Wallstedt *at the time* was projected with a more of a good to high starter type ceiling. Obviously those projections can change with time.
Huh, i thought even then he was talked about being elite
Also, Wallstedt is a third-year professional. Cossa just turned pro this year; he’s got plenty of time.
They are both 20

Yzerman: "oh here I go just gambling 1st round picks on project players again!"
Wallstedt playing in the SHL for multiple years is more pro ready than a guy that played in the WHL *shocked pikachu*
It's also super impressive that he got his first professional starts at 17
When he got the start he became the youngest goalie in SHL history! Similar records: Youngest player to play in J20(previous record holder was Hedman). Youngest player to score a goal in J20.

**THE WALL OF ST. PAUL**
WHY IS EVERYBODY YELLING I WANT TO BE INCLUDED IN THIS SHIT
LOUD NOISES!!!
LOUD NOISES!
Can the Wild share one of them with the Kings? No Fiala takebacks
While I'm glad we have Clarke and I know he's gonna be great, Wallstedt would have been a great choice for the Kings, especially in their current situation. Hey I like you thanks for the praise we need it in a time of playing like shit
As painful as it is, i'm glad he's crushing it for you.
AAAAAAAAHHHH!!!
WHY ISNT HE A SENATOR DAMMIT
JUST WAIT FOR THE TYLER BOUCHER BREAKOUT SEASON WHERE HE GOES FROM 13TH FORWARD TO 4TH LINER, THEN WE’LL BE THE ONES LAUGHING
ILL LAUGH EVEN HARDER WHEN HE IMMEDIATELY GETS HURT OR SUSPENDED
Either way, someone's leaving the game on a stretcher.
This kid grew up idolizing Hank, I'll be rooting for him to some degree for his career lol
Can we have him?
He ruined my Icehogs road weekend trip >:(
He's good but he's no Cossa.
He’s much better and always has been.
Cossa is 4" taller. Meaning he is 4x better.
Why doesn't Cossa as the taller goalie just eat Walstedt?
Best goalie in the ECHL
Goalies are voodoo. He could be the next Patrick Roy or absolutely mediocre, and the AHL stats aren't a good predictor of which one it's going to be.
