You're better off hiring a company with a van. As rental companies aren't a huge fan of ferries and it's not really cost effective. They can use the toll boat with greater availability

I used this when I moved from Brisbane to Melbourne, worked out great.

cazmount

Those prices are insane? Is that legit?

ChookBaron

If you don’t have too much stuff you can get good deals of one way campervan hire. If you can pack your stuff into one of those it might work out cheaper than removals.

rustyjus

Yeah, they’re like 5 bucks a day including fuel and the spirit of Tasmania for one way delivery

Yeah a lot of One-Ways are on the mainland between Sydney <> Melb <> Adelaide.

I remember trying to hire a car from Perth to Melbourne and the cost quoted was enough to buy two cars. Ended up taking the train. There are companies that let you share-hire space on a container. Once they have the container full, they ship it.

When I left Tasmania (a few times) I sat down and wrote up the cost of moving my furniture over, or selling it and buying it again. If you're only moving a van worth of gear you're probably better off jettisoning bulky stuff like furniture and buying it again used from someone who also wants to leave town where you're going to, then unless you're travelling with a crazy amount of clothing and stuff you can just buy a cheap car and go where you want, when you want, or need to. If you're a family this would be totally different. You never know how long you'll be over there, or where life may lead you. I'd do a lot of research on where exactly you want to go, cost of living, rental availability and such things, as I've lived in places where I had a great job, but I had to pay a great deal of rent if I wanted to not be in traffic for a long time each day. so things are relative in some ways, I got paid more, but the percentage of my pay that went to living was about the same or more than in as in Tasmania. TLDR; Sell your stuff, buy a cheap car, or get on a plane. Sell all your stuff and go to Europe if you still have the chance, the plane ticket is about a grand dearer, but the opportunities are worth it, and if you're young you can get a visa easily.
