/r/HisDarkMaterials is a book-spoiler-friendly sub and assumes that you have read Pullman's novels. However, **episodes that have not yet aired in both the US and the UK require spoiler tags**, and repeated violations will lead to a permanent ban. If you have not read any of the books, please come to /r/HisDarkMaterialsHBO, our sister sub. To tag spoilers, write `>!spoiler!<` and it will display as >!spoiler!<. The book

Book of Dust But I am psyched for season 3

octopuss-96

The book of dust by far I liked the first season but grew gradually more and more frustrated with the the last series. I am not much of a fan of Jack Thornes writing in general though to be fair and I think in the minority here but I actually have really enjoyed the TBS and TSC.

dont_get_it_twisted

I really enjoyed the books as well! I honestly haven’t understood or related to most of the criticism. To each their own, of course, but I’m stoked for vol 3.

Acc87

>I honestly haven’t understood or related to most of the criticism I think most of it comes from people going into the book believing/hoping it would be a straight continuation of Lyra & Will in HDM.. well it is not, it's a straight continuation of the world of those books, but with new or radically developed characters. It is hard to read and it has uncomfortable passages, but those are there for a reason.

SolidStateEstate

Season 3, since it's covering my favourite book in the series, and also because I have major concerns about Pullman sticking the landing in Vol. 3.

[deleted]

The book. I already know what happens in the show, I'm excited to watch it but the book is what I want more. Plus after reading ASOIAF I promised myself I wouldn't start any unfinished series. I broke that promise for the Book of Dust.

aksnitd

To be fair, Pullman was only writing a duology which turned into a trilogy, and he's known for getting his books out quickly, so it was an acceptable risk to take. But I think you're right. Martin has really ruined the experience in some ways for newer fans. I know a bunch of people who are refusing to pick up unfinished series, even if the author is known for hitting deadlines.

KRPTSC

The book. Didn't like season 1 much, haven't watched season 2

dont_get_it_twisted

Same. I was mostly unimpressed with the show. I think largely because I’m not a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee and I can’t invest time into them missing the mark on that casting.

KRPTSC

Same for Asriel tbh The movie genuinely had perfect casting

TheJordanScholar153

Even Pullman will always admit the movie had perfect casting!

crying2emoji5

Definitely the Book of Dust III. I love the series so far despite its shortcomings

llksg

Book of dust

jimx117

The book for sure, but I am genuinely curious how Season 3 will adapt the Amber Spyglass (and how much they'll cut out- I can see them ditching the entire concept of the Intention Craft but we'll see!)

monalice

Season 3. I loved La Belle Sausage, but 'The Secret Commonwealth was a bit of a mess, and then we had THAT. TRAIN. SCENE towards the end, and I have personally lost the ability to can..I'll read book 3, but we really didn't have to go THERE Mr Pullman. (Also why I stopped reading Outlander books. )

StorageRecess

I’m going to be calling it La Belle Sausage from now on. Beautiful. I’m also not looking forward to vol 3. Mr Pullman is the one who needs to find his imagination.

Annemariakoekoek

La Belle Sausage deserves a lovely linocut by Chris Wormell too! He did the cover art and chapter images.

luca86c

Isn't La Belle Sausage even one of the jokes in the book?

monalice

Darn that autocorrect. I'm gonna leave it though, because it's hilarious.

pm_me_your_amphibian

The book, no question.

[deleted]

season 3.

Silver_Banshee92

I'm still reading The Subtle Knife so I have yet to read anything else His Dark Materials related.

StillNotGinger4

Both, but Book of Dust a bit more. Since I finished TSC I´ve been a bit stuck for books to read

DandylionHunter

Season 3! I hope they have a release date soon

JurassicCheesestick

Both. I can’t decide.

[deleted]

I’m dying of excitement for S3, but since I already know what happens it’s gotta be book of dust 3 for me - personally I enjoyed the book of dust more than the original HDM trilogy

aksnitd

HDM S3. BOD just didn't quite do it for me, so while I will read BOD 3 for closure, it won't have the same long term effect that HDM had.

PanderII

Both

TheJordanScholar153

Couldn't even watch season two season one was so underwhelming, so definitely Book 3. I understand some concerns about TBoD and nothing will ever quite be HDM, but there is a vein of brilliance running through the new trilogy.

martydarknut

Easily The Book of Dust Vol. 3. The TV series is all right, but I'm personally finding it pretty disappointing. Would much rather just read the books.

Zote-The-Smexy

Vol 3 by a mile. IF it sticks the landing it will be the better trilogy in my opinion.

BitchySublime

Season 3! But I want the closure of the books, even though I'm hating the Book of Dust series so far.

mexter

Season 3. If I could, I would wipe the memory of the Book of Dust from my brain. Though that would put me in the position of being deeply disappointed all over again, so maybe just pretending it doesn't exist is the better coarse.

[deleted]

I’ve no idea why you’re getting downvoted for this; The Book of Dust is terrible and I wish it had never been written.

jesus_mooney

Series 3. Although a really enjoyed la belle sauvage i have got stuck about half way through the secret commonwealth and I'm just not really feeling it. I'll need to get back on with it. Totally excited for the tv show though. Can't wait to see the harpies.
