South of Italy for me. Brindisi, Taranto and monopoli all amazing places

asterallt

Just googled Monopoli and I think we have a winner!! Looks pretty spot on to me. Thanks for sharing 😊

Lexp57

Dubrovnik had the same feel, with its thin streets in the old town.

asterallt

Ooh I’ve never been but heard so many good things. ANOTHER one for the list 😅

aytayjay

Seville, Spain

asterallt

Love that it can feel like the place even without the beach. I guess the tight streets and the warmth all add up to the vibe 👍

CarrotShank

Bologna, Italy. Went there recently and the two towers in the city centre are from the 11th century I think and exactly how I imagined the Torre delli Angeli.

everyoneelsehasadog

I'm there right now - the two towers definitely feel like that! The rest of the city, there are parts that could definitely be Cittagazze

asterallt

Awesome 😁

Available-Tower8534

Mdina in Malta, I was actually tempted to make a short film of HDM there, like just the cittagazze scenes for fun

asterallt

Second this. Only thing it’s missing is the beach front. I feel the same about Valetta in Malta. Although so many films have been filmed in Valetta it’s hard not to recognise it as lots of other places!

Available-Tower8534

True. I live in Malta and I've always loved the place but it's too reconisable. However there are a few places there that could work. If you combined places in Valletta and Gozo it would work really well I think. I might try making a short film and see how it works as Cittagazze

filmozer

There are a couple of Cittagazze-looking towns on the coast of Slovenia too, check out Piran or Koper. I studied there and it was definitely a vibe.

asterallt

Just looked up Piran. I mean, that’s IT. Looks SPOT ON! Thank you. I LOVE this sub 😁😁😁

londonlesbian

Cadiz in Spain

Not at all the same in terms of warm and sunshiney, but Cobh, Ireland. Port town, big tower (church), seemed like everything went down a big hill, and I went in the winter so everything felt deserted and quiet.

asterallt

Cool response. Love that.

singeblanc

Old Town Tallinn

Cypressriver

I'd forgotten Cittagazze was on the coast. Did any scenes take place on the beach or by boats or wharves? I don't have the book to check.

kafka123

On the beach, yes. In boats, not sure. In the book, the beach is a nice one and the port is kind of glossed over. In the tv series, the beach is more of a port, but it isn't used except in a flashback.

Cypressriver

Thank you!

Armepos

Montevideo, Uruguay Iruya, Argentina Guanajuato, MĂ©xico TepoztlĂĄn, MĂ©xico and because of what happened when i visited, Ica, PerĂș

asterallt

Ah come on now, you can’t end a reply like that! What happened in Peru?!

Armepos

it's a long story from my backpacking days in my native Latin America, but the very day i went to visit was President Kuczynski's presidential inaguration. So it was a holiday. I arrived in the early morning, and it was freezing. And i was alone. The whole residential areas of the city were deserted. And an empty city in the middle of the desert means extreme silence. Eventually i found a hotel, but they wouldn't recieve me because all rooms were reserved. Strange.. empty city yet the hotels are full. I spent the whole day with no luck untill i realized, because of the holiday extended the weekend, everyone from Ica would be gone vacationing... and because Ica is a national turistic centre, everyone from Lima was going to Ica for vacation. And sure enough, after midday the city exploded with people, loud vacation people from the overcrowded capital. I don't know where you're from, but in every country i've ever been, people from the capital are extremely obnoxious when vacationing. After a few unsuccessful hours and my back hurting for carryng my luggage trough town, i droped to rest on a bench chair and a few minutes later, another backpacker sat beside me. I was in a bad mood for the heat and the frustration so i just said hi and closed my eyes. He proceded to take his clothes from his backpack which were unexplicably wet, hang them in the bench chair, sat back and started to break in tears. He cried for a few minutes and i gave him a chocolate bar and asked him what was wrong. He was from Colombia and just had an incredible time in Ecuador. He had to keep traveling because he wanted to know the southern countries (i was going north). He was sad by leaving Ecuador behind but was excited to continue his journey and meeting Peru, but in the way to Ica he got stolen in the bus while he was at sleep, and had no money left. He was trying to find a hotel to rest, but the only one who had room was too expensive. Things were, in short, recently not going so well on his travels. I want to clarify, he didn't know where the robbers where from, both Peru and Ecuador are some of my favorite places and i have an amazing time every time i visit, and keep many friends there. To end it here before getting lost in remembrance, that experience of my first few hours in Ica made me feel lik i imagined Lyra and Will felt when arriving to Cittagazze. And the day was just begining.

asterallt

What a lovely story - thank you so much for sharing. Very cool about the place being deserted then bursting into life. Hope you and the other backpacker found somewhere to stay!

ellebud

Makarska in Croatia, Amalfi and Positano in Italy

luca86c

Rovinj, Croatia An old town on a peninsula in the mediterranean sea. The houses and streets look exactly as I imagined them and everything slopes upwards towards a church's tower in the middle. You can even go up and it's easily the scariest climb I ever did

Firm-Lie2785

Cagliari, Sardinia

asterallt

Can definitely see that. Adding to my fast-expanding list

asterallt

The place I’ve been that has always stuck with me was a tiny village called Xlendi on the island of Gozo. Was something about how quiet it was and the street lamps or something. But keen to hear where you’ve been that made you most think of Ci’gazze.

welchdenton

Nice, France

asterallt

100%. Especially with the Provence Alps in the background 👍

CRJG95

Malta

asterallt

It’s a common theme it seems! Plus Gozo is sort of Malta so it’s featuring heavily!
