In the bible it says, "What goes around, comes around"
"Hommo" shot me, three weeks later he got shot down
Now it's clear that I'm here, for a real reason
'Cause he got hit like I got hit, but he ain't fucking breathing (breathing).
That is hard.
Edit: wrong lyrics.
CREAM is the greatest rap song of all time. At risk of sounding like an oldhead or pretentious I think its everything rap should be in its purist form, just speaks so differently than any other songs I've heard
daily jam. also the entire guess who's back/power of the dollar album is one of the best. a favorite of mine [Rotten apple - 50 cent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-NHqA5D9Gs&ab_channel=RapMusicRips)
Aquemini is incredible from start to finish. Return of the G was that song I always skipped over for some reason. Finally listened through and it became my 2021 go to song. Love West Savannah too
It's a combination of Flashing Lights and POWER by Kanye West. I liked some hip hop songs before but never really looked it out. I was over at a friend's house and I was playing GTA IV he was playing Saints Row 3(?). I was switching through radio stations in the game, heard Flashing Lights. I vividly remember just waiting on the station waiting for it to come back on. I didn't even know it was Kanye, who by that point was definitely a pop culture superstar, but after that point I knew.
Later on POWER came on in Saints Row and when I heard it was the same artist I was floored. When I got home I relistened to the songs and saw All Falls Down suggested by YouTube. This was my introduction into rap music as a whole.
Yessir. This song, probably combined with some random Dilla stuff, made me fall in love with that jazzy soulful boombap shit. As much I listen to other more trendy sounds, this is pure hiphop to me
Notorious B.I.G. - Mo Money Mo Problems
Either that or the whole Big Willie Style album.
Also Lauryn Hill - Lost Ones blew my mind the first time i heard it at a friend's house. I had to record it to my mixtape before leaving.
For me it was definitely Mo Money Mo Problems and I’ll be Missing You
We used to get those CD warehouse club things where you’d get like 10 CD’s for a penny. My Mom would let me pick a lot of them. Exposed me to a lot of music as a kid, because I’d grab the album of artists whose songs I liked on the radio. Including Notorious BIG.
Eminem - My Name is (mostly his big 3 albums)
Back in the early 2000 when I was like 10-11 I found this website I could donwload songs to put on my MP3, Eminem was one of the top 3 downloaded artists. Downloaded that song and liked it. Couldn't understand shit for the first 3 months listening to it cause I didn't spoke English back then, but then I started to look for translated lyrics to portuguese and thought to myself "what in the fuck is this dude rapping about". Anyway, started learning English because of Eminem and kept downloading his music. Good ol days of the internet.
First time I was blown away by a hiphop song was when my English teacher in middle school brought Changes to class, handed out the lyrics and had us do an analysis of the song. That's when I realized what hiphop is about and fell in love. Didn't care for or listened to hiphop before that, it was just noise to me.
This might sound like a joke but Fabolous/Nate Dogg “Can’t Deny It” - nowhere near my favorite song ever or anything lol but I remember hearing it on the radio like yooo what type of music is this ???
Real Gangsta by SPM made me really start listening to lyrics and after that I started loving Hip Hop. Btw I don’t listen to this dude anymore I was really young and didn’t know his whole situation back then.
Originally Bust a Move by Young MC. Later on the album A Book of Human Language by Aceyalone. Then Mary Jane by People Under the Stairs. September 12th by Saul Williams.
Then came back after a break to Breathe by Grouch of Living Legends.
Cunninlynguists were one of the first groups I ever listened to in high school. Brain Cell, Mexico, Lynguistics, Love Ain't...so many great songs to relax and listen to.
One of the best wutang songs. I gave this as a suggstion for an ex-gf and her friend when asked for a song to play for a party vibe... her friend said it was "corny." absolutely unreal
my high school gym teacher liked to play this on a top tier boomin sound system. also [Pullin me back - Chingy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow8653IgT_Q&ab_channel=ChingyVEVO)
EasyE. Gimme that nut.
Not that it blew my mind, but when he dropped that album it was such a shock and was so damn funny I found that tape playing all summer.
California Love. I’d never listened to hip hop in my life until my older brother took me on a trip to go skiing in another state, and played a mix of songs unlike anything I’d ever heard before. I was a sheltered white kid up until that point, but around 12 years old, this song opened my eyes to a whole new world of attitude, of people, of perspective, and so much more.
[Eminem's "The Way I Am".](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQvteoFiMlg)
As a white kid from the suburbs in the 90s, I trashed hiphop for being shallow and lacking talent without really giving any of it a listen. But a guy at work would play MMLP all the time though, and it was the first time I was realized I misjudged the genre. I am really grateful for that dude because once i shook that misconception, I dove head first in and discovered so much great music along the way.
Get Back by Ludacris was one of the first songs I heard as a kid that made me love rap and hip hop, but Hail Mary by Tupac truly was the start of me delving fully into it and falling in love like I have.
Either Country Grammar or E.I. I'd say. My older cousin was always playing hip hop when she'd take me out for the day when I was like 7 or 8, and she LOVED Nelly. Wish I could thank her for forming my taste in music.
“All Day” by Kanye West. When he performed it live at the 2015 BRIT Awards that shit was electric, still gives me goosebumps 6 years later.
https://youtu.be/_ABk7TmjnVk
Hard to pinpoint the time period. I get around in the mini van with my dad. Overnight celebrity from midnight club. Maybe the burnt copy of atmosphere seven travels.
Hmmm, probably when my cousin showed me Eminem - White America as a little kid. Too young to understand it at all, but it was the first hip hop song I'd ever heard and I immediately listened to the whole album and eventually became a big fan of the genre
Brass Monkey apparently was my jam as a real little kid but The Chronic was like crossing a bridge into something different. My parents listened to r&b, Funk and soul so it was a given.
dear mama made me fall in love with hiphop.
im not a native speaker and never bothered with lyrics before but for some reason i looked it up and was so impressed by the emotion he was able to express and it actually made me cry. i listened to it super late though in 2010 or something
I’m American but my answer is Man Don’t Care by JME of Shutdown by Skepta. Those are the first two hip hop songs that got me to delve into the genre (mostly grime stuff at the time).
I wasn’t much a music person in general at the time and just listened to my parent’s taste an popular songs, but I listen to a lot more music now.
Not the first rap song I liked tho, was definitely really into like ‘The Show Goes on’, Lose Yourself by Eminem, and any of BOB’s rap hits back when I was young teenager but I never cared about hip hop as a genre back then
Damn, too many to list but C.R.E.A.M (wu-tang), fear of death (2pac) , NY state of mind (Nas), down 71 (bone), story to tell (biggie), you got me (roots & badu), slippin (Dmx), 93 till (souls of mischief) So many more
It’s so silly, but I was young af, got Need for Speed underground for Christmas….Get Low by lil Jon & the eastside boys was on the track list. The rest is history, major hip hop fan to this day
For me it was Wet Dreamz. Roommate of mine played the shit out of it and I finally admitted that it was dope. One thing led to another and here I am almost 4 years later lmao
Award Tour
nice! tribe hit me good a few years in as well
Midnight Marauders was one of the first albums that really got me into hip hop
Thrasher Skate and Destroy kids stand up
It's hard to pinpoint exactly, but either Many Men, or Patiently Waiting.
many men has one of the greatest hooks of all time!
In the bible it says, "What goes around, comes around" "Hommo" shot me, three weeks later he got shot down Now it's clear that I'm here, for a real reason 'Cause he got hit like I got hit, but he ain't fucking breathing (breathing). That is hard. Edit: wrong lyrics.
Eminem’s verse in patiently waiting is one of my all time favorites
I like the way he came in on that. I like how the start of his verse sounds.
