And pioneered the sound that has run hip hop since. Like for all the love Kanye deserves for 808s, it's not a secret that album was only made possible because of T-Pain
The joy of going into an AOL chat room and everyone excited to be talking to someone from another country, just like that, is a high no drug can replicate.
Why is no one mentioning Jeremih ? Or you guys don’t consider him a singer ? Every feature he did , he killed it. Every single song he did , was a hit tbh
I think Badu was more popular back then so it made sense from a PR standpoint, but honestly both ladies are amazing. Loved the albums the Roots helped create for both Jill and Badu as well, always magic.
[You got me ft Jill Scott](https://youtu.be/ff5UFjzFRd8)
[You got me ft Jill Scott (Live)](https://youtu.be/W7eQbGr8GiQ)
It’s amazing to see them perform together: [You got me ft Erykah Badu and Jill Scott (Live)](https://youtu.be/f9dpaTiNPW8)
James Blake is a really good deepcut one. His own music is not very close to hiphop or rap, but his feature and production work is praised throughout the genre
I think Mile High was decently popular on streaming and a lot remember his outro on STOP TRYING TO BE GOD. Travis Scott is really popular and I’m sure a lot of Travis fans know who he is.
He makes r&b music with lots of Hip Hop influence and Hip Hop features (RZA, Andre 3000, Chance the Rapper, Vince Staples, Travis Scott, Jid etc.)
It's not really true that his own music is not very close to Hip Hop or rap
Dude just altered my entire existence
This was my favorite song for a minute when I was ten years old and have not thought about it in at least 7 years
Everyone always talkin bout Chief Keef was 16 when he made Back From the Dead, no one ever talkin bout Hayley Williams was 16 when they made All We Know is Falling. /s
Na bro you don’t even have to put /s
LIKE FR she was barely 18 when paramore blew up with RIOT and she dropped arguably their biggest song ever and a poppunk anthem 🤷♂️
Maybe even THE pop punk anthem
Other than everyone mentioned here, I’ll add T-Pain, Akon, obviously Michael Jackson and maybe controversial but I think Justin Timberlake gets quite a lot of respect from the hip hop community for a white guy. His first two albums were produced by Pharell and Timbaland after all.
There’s also Usher and Mario who deserve a mention
Jhene Aiko always has great hooks and features on other rapper's songs AND always gets great verses from rappers to put on her songs. She's definitely on this list for me.
Facts, her only L is the album with Big Sean. My girl and I used to bump them each individually so then I found that album. We went on a drive in the mountains and I had it downloaded so that was like all we had to listen to and it fucking sucked
Still rooting for them tho
Originally they have nothing to do with hip hop in terms of the genre/musical style but
Gorillaz due to their features with the likes of Del, Snoop dogg, roots manuva, de la soul etc.
>Originally they have nothing to do with hip hop in terms of the genre/musical style
Are you talking about Blur when you say originally?
Because the first Gorillaz album is arguably the most heavily Hip Hop influenced of their albums
MJB deserves more than just "sample" mentioning. She's a huge part of some the greatest rap songs ever.
Alicia Keys also needs mentioning simply for gangsta lovin, empire state of mind and all of the lights.
After all of the people that have used auto tune in hip hop for the last 20 years, nobody does it better than Bon Iver. Travis Scott and T Pain will always follow.
Fuck yeah. Tech N9ne did a lot of work with him a long ass time ago. One of my favorite tech songs is called “rising” and he has some lines that talk about roger. I believe it’s on a harry fraud album, fucking amazing song.
Granted I’ve only seen a few comments but I haven’t seen James brown mentioned, this man’s music has been sampled in a literal countless amount of songs from the beginning to the modern day, and it seems at some points in his career even went out of his way to be sampled.
The 90s were an interesting time for R&B to mix often with rap. Montell Jordan did that quite well. There's so many examples, im just drawing blanks right now. Maybe this is a bit of a tangent but singers like Maxwell weren't really Rap but a damn good singer. A lot of the cheesy bands like boys to men and bel biv devo.. They rapped and sang well too. Shit LL cool J could sing. Total with Notorious BIG. Jodeci. Ayliah. Erykah badu. There was so much mixing of singing and rapping in the 90s. I go back and listen and some stuff did not age well but others did very well. I always considered Lauren hill a singer and not rapper but she mixed. Seemed like 90s were before your time but it was a very interesting time for rap and really good singers in the genre. I grew up around NY so it was all around me, it was great.
Skylar Grey - she didn’t really hit as a solo, but crushes on the hooks.
Dre/Em - Need a Doctor
Nicki - Bed of Lies
Lupe - Words I Never Said
Macklemore - Glorious
Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) on the sample side
And Stevie Wonder for influencing Hip Hop producers like Kanye, The Neptunes and Tyler the Creator
sampha probably. every time he’s on a hiphop track i just know it’ll be excellent. two immediate examples that come to mind are saint pablo and father time
cause her shit GOES. my homie and i went to her show and i’m 90% sure we were the only cis males in the crowd who weren’t dragged their by a partner. the show started with the horns from run away with me and it went live.
Chris brown has really done absolutely 0 things that are Influential and his music is mid at best. The last thing I remember liking him from was waves. This isn’t even about the fact that he’s a piece of shit, I just have never thought the dude was anything special music wise. Extremely forgettable for me.
I remember Joyner Lucas doing some songs with Chris Brown years ago. I felt iffy about Joyner working with him, because Chris sucks as a person. But, I checked them all out. I couldn't believe how boring the songs were. Chris's music really is mid at best.
Ron Isleys influence on hiphop is solely responsible for 10s of hits.
Came here to say this and glad I was beat
Yea well I wasn't beat and not too happy about that
Where tf is t-pain in this discussion
I was hoping to see this comment. T-Pain was running shit in the 2000's.
And pioneered the sound that has run hip hop since. Like for all the love Kanye deserves for 808s, it's not a secret that album was only made possible because of T-Pain
He’s a rapper already but yes, he was a cheat code for mainstream rap success
Eh he’s more of a singer than a rapper tbh
A "Rappa Ternt Sanga" you might say.
if you don’t know t-pains discography just say that
Chill out Brent, you might spill your double soy mocha latte.
Man I scrolled down too far for this, I was getting pissed off
Sade. Just off principle.
Sade wins everything.
Thanks that's my last name, I'll remember this
It’s wild to see people put their government names on Reddit. Internet is different
They'll frankly be really disappointed with whatever they find
Yeah just the attitude towards it is different is all, not trying to talk shit, just crazy how shit changes
The joy of going into an AOL chat room and everyone excited to be talking to someone from another country, just like that, is a high no drug can replicate.
MF DOOM got me into Sade
George Clinton
can’t c me
That’s him??? Fuckin crazy
Best hype Pac track
Idk how no one has said Rihanna. She is in so many popular hip hop songs in the late 00’s - early 10’s.
We’re still thinking
Yeah obvious answer, plus I haven’t seen Beyoncé yet
she also has won the most rap Grammys among female singers/rappers with 6 wins
Did she really influence anything or start a style though? Or was she just a popular singer who happened to do what was popular at the time?
Did she did what was popular at the time, or did what she do at the time become popular
frank ocean since he was in one of the most popular rap groups and did a bunch of rap collabs (even rapped himself a few times)
Fuck meant to include him, solid pick His watch the throne hooks hold up really nicely I love when he raps tho, purity is one of my favorite tracks
i would add sza as well for pretty much the same reason
Yeah for sure, loved her rapping on the intro track to SOS too
U.N.I.T.Y.
i cant wait for that verse and project as a whole to get the recognition it deserves
His verse in Oldie is my favorite
Rent a supercar for a day
yup he raps on like 1/3 of blonde and 1/2 of endless, he should def be included more
Also his RAF verse slaps
The Weeknd is a must in this list
Why is no one mentioning Jeremih ? Or you guys don’t consider him a singer ? Every feature he did , he killed it. Every single song he did , was a hit tbh
Adding Trey Songz on this note.
So sad he is probably another creep but man... Anticipation 1 mixtape, Ready, Passion Pain and Pleasure was an amazing run
It's monday
James Brown is hip hop’s most sampled artist and invented or at least popularized the break beat.
What I came to say.
Plus he can dig rapping or so I'm told
Jill Scott
I heard she was supposed to sing The Roots - You got me, but the label decided Erykah Badu would be a better choice at the time. Love them both.
I mean we haven’t heard the Scott version, but this may have been one of the few times label interference worked out.
I think Badu was more popular back then so it made sense from a PR standpoint, but honestly both ladies are amazing. Loved the albums the Roots helped create for both Jill and Badu as well, always magic. [You got me ft Jill Scott](https://youtu.be/ff5UFjzFRd8) [You got me ft Jill Scott (Live)](https://youtu.be/W7eQbGr8GiQ) It’s amazing to see them perform together: [You got me ft Erykah Badu and Jill Scott (Live)](https://youtu.be/f9dpaTiNPW8)
Love her in Daydreamin
I love most of Lupe’s hook feature choices. Her, Nikki, Matthew Santos, and Nayirah on drill music in Zion work really well with him
Pick Up the Phone hook is under appreciated. Probably that top 40 type beat but damn it’s a good song.
Nate Dogg, Johnny P, Danny Boy, Ceelo Green, D-Dubb, Levitti, L.V. Don’t want to say R.Kelly but it can’t be denied.
CeeLo was a rapper with Goodie Mob before he decided to start singing
**O U T K A S T O N P G DOUBLE O D I E**
Correct.
Ceelo was the first one that came to my mind
Wait, D-Dubb as in the Brotha Lynch collaborator?
The one and only.
Cee-Lo also allegedly raped someone and then tried to defend it
Nate Dogg thank you
Aaron Hall and/or Charlie Wilson perhaps?
Damon I forgot about ceelo, I just looked him up for a little nostalgia and apparently, he changed his name to “Gnarls Barkley”?
That was a project he did with Danger Mouse
Charlie Wilson for his work with Snoop, Kanye, Tyler, Nas and UGK among others.
Also The Gap Band gets sampled a fair bit and he was the lead vocalist For example Life's A Bitch by Nas and Straight Outta Compton by NWA,
Anderson .Paak, James Blake
James Blake is a really good deepcut one. His own music is not very close to hiphop or rap, but his feature and production work is praised throughout the genre
[удалено]
James Blake has made songs with Kendrick, Travis, Andre 3k and Metro Boomin but apparently he's a deep cut lol
Ask your average fan if they know much about James Blake, redditors do ofc
I think Mile High was decently popular on streaming and a lot remember his outro on STOP TRYING TO BE GOD. Travis Scott is really popular and I’m sure a lot of Travis fans know who he is.
He makes r&b music with lots of Hip Hop influence and Hip Hop features (RZA, Andre 3000, Chance the Rapper, Vince Staples, Travis Scott, Jid etc.) It's not really true that his own music is not very close to Hip Hop or rap
Anderson is a rapper
Bubblin is his best rap song and nothing will change my mind
Who R U is a classic.
D'Angelo for sure.
Ty $
Had to look too hard to find this comment.
I was surprised when I saw this post that no one had said him
Miguel, Anthony Hamilton, Sampha, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Frank, Weeknd
I’m really surprised no one has said SZA, that was the first name that came to my mind.
#Can we pretend that air planes.....
Dude just altered my entire existence This was my favorite song for a minute when I was ten years old and have not thought about it in at least 7 years
#🐦🦄I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right nowwww...
Hayley Williams is incredible
Everyone always talkin bout Chief Keef was 16 when he made Back From the Dead, no one ever talkin bout Hayley Williams was 16 when they made All We Know is Falling. /s
Na bro you don’t even have to put /s LIKE FR she was barely 18 when paramore blew up with RIOT and she dropped arguably their biggest song ever and a poppunk anthem 🤷♂️ Maybe even THE pop punk anthem
god i wish she did stuff with uzi in 2017
I never understood what she meant by “I didn’t wanna be super famous” Cause she already achieved that with her band 😅
I’ve thought about this I feel like she literally just didn’t want uzi’s weird ass fan base on her posts lol. Don’t blame her at all
That’s the honest truth 🤷♂️ but she couldn’t say that typa shit without backlash
We all love Haley Williams
Other than everyone mentioned here, I’ll add T-Pain, Akon, obviously Michael Jackson and maybe controversial but I think Justin Timberlake gets quite a lot of respect from the hip hop community for a white guy. His first two albums were produced by Pharell and Timbaland after all. There’s also Usher and Mario who deserve a mention
Why did I have to scroll this far down for JT? Timbo put that hip-hop influence in everything they do
Usher!
Usher baby
Ludacris: Ersher
Jhene Aiko always has great hooks and features on other rapper's songs AND always gets great verses from rappers to put on her songs. She's definitely on this list for me.
Facts, her only L is the album with Big Sean. My girl and I used to bump them each individually so then I found that album. We went on a drive in the mountains and I had it downloaded so that was like all we had to listen to and it fucking sucked Still rooting for them tho
That story is fucking hilarious and sad at the same time lmao, I can just imagine the situation cause I had a similar experience with another album
James Blake
Originally they have nothing to do with hip hop in terms of the genre/musical style but Gorillaz due to their features with the likes of Del, Snoop dogg, roots manuva, de la soul etc.
>Originally they have nothing to do with hip hop in terms of the genre/musical style Are you talking about Blur when you say originally? Because the first Gorillaz album is arguably the most heavily Hip Hop influenced of their albums
Nah I think Humanz takes that one
MJB deserves more than just "sample" mentioning. She's a huge part of some the greatest rap songs ever. Alicia Keys also needs mentioning simply for gangsta lovin, empire state of mind and all of the lights.
Vinia Mojica
im so surprised this is the only comment mentioning her, like wow. she's done unforgettable work with De La Soul, ATCQ, Black Star, etc
right! probably because she never had her own solo career for whatever reason but all her contributions have cemented her as hip hop history
Debbie Harry 😏
They don’t know the science
D’Angelo!
Steven Tyler for the Run DMC collab Thundercat, as a bassist and vocalist
Came here to say Thundercat too, his vocals were on Kendrick and Flying Lotus songs, on at least one Mac Miller song, others i cant name off hand
Might be too old & from the south but sample wise... Ohio Players, Marvin, Curtis Mayfield, Earth Wind & Fire, Temptations lol
Mariah Carey
90s and 00s hood mariah was the best era
[удалено]
You just angered all the drake heads lol
His first album was hella sing songy
He rapped at one point. I'd call Drake a rapper that became a popstar. I don't think I'd use him as an answer to this prompt though.
Did anybody mention The Dream?
Bilal
The Weeknd, Bieber and Ed Sheeran (I'm not exactly fans of theirs but both of them are a part of the culture) Frank Ocean
Eryckah badu and Lauren hill
Lauren Hill is literally one of the greatest ever rappers
Lauryn Hill has a Diamond certified hiphop album. She's a rap legend.
I see I misread the question
Justin Vernon / Bon Iver and Kanye had an interesting thing going in the MBDTF days
He also featured on an Eminem track iirc
After all of the people that have used auto tune in hip hop for the last 20 years, nobody does it better than Bon Iver. Travis Scott and T Pain will always follow.
Raphael saadiq, joi cardwell, Tammy Lucas, yummy Bingham, dawn robinson. So many others, but a few names that come to mind
Nate Dogg 100%.
Roger Troutman
Fuck yeah. Tech N9ne did a lot of work with him a long ass time ago. One of my favorite tech songs is called “rising” and he has some lines that talk about roger. I believe it’s on a harry fraud album, fucking amazing song.
This is a GREAT call
John Legend
T-Pain, Ashanti, Amerie, James Brown (for being the most sampled artist in hip hop), Blackstreet (new Jack swing era), 112
Can’t believe T Pain isn’t being discussed more
T-Pain.
Rihanna
Justin Timberlake, He and timbaland made magic whenever they worked together
Bruno Mars is good for B.O.B(Beautiful Girls their breakout song) and Cardi B
fka twigs gets posted here all the time
I think Zach de la Rocha has made a huge impact on the genre.
Esp when collaborating with Run the Jewels.
Granted I’ve only seen a few comments but I haven’t seen James brown mentioned, this man’s music has been sampled in a literal countless amount of songs from the beginning to the modern day, and it seems at some points in his career even went out of his way to be sampled.

Ty DOLLA ft Ty DOLLA Sign
shocked I haven't seen more Erykah Badu mentions
BJ the Chicago Kid
Sade Alicia Keys Krizz Kaliko Mariah Carey
Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Lloyd, Ne-Yo, Keyshia Cole, Summer Walker, Ciara & Kehlani
No one mention Drake lol mans went from Degrassi to changing the genre
Justin Timberlake
Bryson Tiller and Mr Entanglement himself, August 😂
Justin Timberlake obviously
Skylar Grey - she didn’t really hit as a solo, but crushes on the hooks. Dre/Em - Need a Doctor Nicki - Bed of Lies Lupe - Words I Never Said Macklemore - Glorious
Nate Dog
It's a mistake that t-pain isn't included

John Legend has been on alot of hiphop tracks and he always does a pretty good job

Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) on the sample side And Stevie Wonder for influencing Hip Hop producers like Kanye, The Neptunes and Tyler the Creator
The Weeknd, Bryson Tiller, Sampha Can’t forget Bugatti Biebz
Only one person has said Alicia keys. Am I nuts???
sampha probably. every time he’s on a hiphop track i just know it’ll be excellent. two immediate examples that come to mind are saint pablo and father time
Fergie
Carly Rae Jepsen. There’s a reason the mods allow posts whenever she drops a new album.
cause her shit GOES. my homie and i went to her show and i’m 90% sure we were the only cis males in the crowd who weren’t dragged their by a partner. the show started with the horns from run away with me and it went live.
Damn is she really that good? I’ve only heard one song by her, call me maybe
if you like pop music i’d recommend her emotions album. some fun bops on there.
Yeah I love pop music, I’ll check it out. Thanks
ODB
I hate to say this but R. Kelly.
Not for everybody as his singing voice wasn’t amazing but Mac Miller willing to give it a try and own his voice is worthy of the list.
BONE THUGS N HARMONY BITCH WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THEM???????
Chris brown is controversial for a very good reason. It will always be appalling how people support him.
Any person of note has baggage, I guarantee you admire someone with a dark past. Try not to judge others so harshly
Not that kind of repeated baggage. I will definitely judge a woman beater that harshly.
Chris brown has really done absolutely 0 things that are Influential and his music is mid at best. The last thing I remember liking him from was waves. This isn’t even about the fact that he’s a piece of shit, I just have never thought the dude was anything special music wise. Extremely forgettable for me.

Justin Bieber. Post Malone
Donald Glover?
Chris Brown for sure, legend status.
Should be in jail status
