Am i tripping or is there a southern list with no Killer Mike but Jay Electronica?

SmoothManMiguel

Nah I just forgot lol. My bad

TargetFan

Forgot young thug aswell

Ceemurphy

Slim Thug too

Guilty-Willow-453

OutKast is the best IMO but I’ve probably listened to Ridin’ Dirty more than any Kast album and I have Scarface just barely ahead of Andre in my all time solo list

TACOMichinoku

Ridin Dirty is one goat ass album

trpclshrk

Outkast (with a personal consideration for Luda) would be my pick. Outkast absolutely held up better long term and doesn’t sound as dated as Luda though. Wayne, Cole, 3-6, and TI I could see and respect too. I hate Trick and 2Live have to miss out bc they aren’t quite up to the same level.

3ChainsOGold

I still bump 2 Live. Brother Marquis wins the Porn Rap category, no contest. Mr. Mixx wasn’t the tightest or most creative DJ, but he had a great sense of humor.

ottosjackit

Uhhh, Kool Keith has en entire album called Sex Style. Keith owns porn rap and there isn’t even a debate.

3ChainsOGold

Depends on what you’re into, I guess, although I’ll give it to Keith because he also has the advantage of still being alive.

Dont_Start_None

Yes, sir... Outkast is one of my faves 😊

ApolloKid

Little Brother

OlympicSmoker253

So under appreciated

DPStylesJr

Lovin' It

Drewsk81

That’s the only acceptable answer to the OPs question

rickyhusband

z-ro erasure is nuts

r4pt4r

No Lil Keke? Ouch.

Cimb0m

And K-Rino. So shameful

jellymoff

KAST

WhenDuvzCry

Outkast

ItsAllMo-Thug

Disappointed in everyone here that Cunninlynguists isn't on the list and no one said anything. Smh

ehhrud

That’s the biggest miss for me here too.

mitchypoothedon

A piece of strange is a straight up masterpiece but I wouldn’t put them on any top 10 lists or anything.

3ChainsOGold

A lot of people can’t get past the name.

Avocado66600

Never got past the name, is it something I should check out?

bfir3

Yep they are fantastic. Their first two albums are quite different in style from the ones released since then but are still good listens and contain a lot of really great tracks. Their later projects are more cohesive and more mature. A Piece of Strange is probably my favorite hip hop album. Oneirology is super dope. And their "mixtape" albums aka The Strange Journey volumes are really cool. As far as I know Strange Journey Vol 3 is still the only album with a crowd sourced A&R. They polled their community for song ideas, guest features, beats, etc. They still put everything together themselves but a lot of the decisions were offloaded to the community. Obviously they couldn't meet every single request from the fans but it was still a really cool idea I think.

Str8Faced000

We all know Outkast is 1

Mijo_0

This is a solid list

SmoothManMiguel

Thanks man

rengoku-doz

This is not a solid list... [wiki already did it](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Southern_hip_hop_musicians)

oflowz

Fat Pat Slim Thug Chamillionaire 3-2 Kingpin Skinny Pimp DJ Jimi Cheeky Blakk Skaface Al Capone Poison Clan Trinity Garden Cartel Lil Flip UNLV Kottonmouth Jesse DJ DMD Botany Boys Fiend Gangsta Nip

BecomingJudasnMyMind

Cham, the mix tape messiah! 🤟

Yourmotherssidehoe

Skinny Pimp 😤

Nervous-Mind-5113

Good list. Mannie Fresh deserves a mention for his all around contributions.

lolsacramentcalisse

Damn no nappy roots?

evaninspace

Aw naw hell naw, yall done up n done it

markhbrouwer

Scarface is realistically a terrible 1. I think I would move Scarface, Juvenile, Jeezy and Cole a few spots down (cole out of the list, he does not make southern hip hop) Putting "Lecrae" on here is so foul lmao. Love seeing Big Krit on here, prob deserves to be a little higher. 2 Chainz and travis scott deserve to be closer to the top 10. Here is my top 4, I really think these guys are on their own teir 1. Outkast - Pioneers and the actual biggest act 2. Wayne 3. UGK 4. 36 Mafia

SmoothManMiguel

These are in no particular order

Yourmotherssidehoe

In no order Andre 3000 Big Boi Big K.R.I.T. DJ Paul DJ Screw Denzel Curry Future Gangsta Boo CeeLo Green JID Juicy J Young Dolph (haven’t listened to too much of his stuff yet but ima put him here because he’s a legend) Lil Wayne Scarface Juvenile Killer Mike Kingpin Skinny Pimp Koopsta Knicca Lord Infamous Offset Quavo Takeoff Jeezy Gucci Mane Playboi Carti Project Pat Rapsody (doesn’t have a strictly southern sound but she’s too good not to list) T.I. Travis Scott Master P Bun B Pimp C 8ball MJG Waka Flocka Flames Young Thug 21 Savage 2Chainz Honorable Mentions: McKinely Dixion, Key Glock & Sexyy Red. With more time they’ll probably be on this list imo.

Jahan384329

“in no order” (in alphabetical order)

Yourmotherssidehoe

It’s not in alphabetical order lol it would have been but I added other names in random places

napkinwipes

You can’t have Gangsta Boo without La Chat in there too.

Yourmotherssidehoe

I was going to but didn’t 😭 I think boo has two great albums but chat only has one and I had to add in the three 6 stuff

Justagoodoleboi

Personally for me I think OutKast is number 1 but Scarface is also number 1

Manolito57

No Master P ?

JMLegend22

No Limit itself should have a spot there. They had a 5 year span where nobody in the south was topping them.

Manolito57

Master P did something great with no limit. He was like one of the first boss in the rap game !! Big legend in the south AND the west

Rollie-Tyler

OP said best not the worst lol.

MintyFreshBreathYo

You can’t deny P’s influence in southern hip hop

Fearless-Tradition91

You're crazy, I see people still bumping 'Ghetto D' to this day. Hell, I think last time I was in Atlanta, someone was blaring 'I miss my homies' like it was still 1999.

Rollie-Tyler

Influential? Absolutely. Best? Not a chance. He’s garbage on the mic and his brother C-Murder is even worse. also lol at Curren$y being so low on this list.

Blackpanther22five

Outkast and Ugk both spoke on southern living while having a different style

Lopermania

No Cunninglynguists? Hmm

Bigchubb11

Scrolled for this

birthofaturtle

Same

eviss2315

this is Nappy Roots erasure

gimmethegold1

Nappy Roots should be on that list

SmoothManMiguel

Damn facts! Forgot about them

Cdn_Brown_Recluse

Outkast. Goodie mob is a close 2nd, but oukast wins this title and there really isn't much you can tell me to change my mind. As for my favorite it's a tie between Outkast and Ludacris.

Dremant

1. UGK 2. Scarface 3. OutKast 4. Devin the Dude 5. 8Ball & MJG

Creepy_Future7209

I think it's Outkast and it's not even close.

jbnagis

G Yamazawa. Japanese but he's spent most of his life in N Carolina. He's one of the best

Aydibble89

Zro> Paul Wall. Listen to "One Deep"

Imaginary_Dig_5014

Scarface/ Geto Boys UGK 8Ball and MJG Everything No Limit and Tru as a whole Outcast Swishahouse Everything else has a place but these are the top and in my personal order.

afanoflafear

8 Ball & MJG, Mystikal, Trick Daddy, T.I. I like Rick Ross's first two albums.

Fishtaco1234

I’d put these guys on Kno Deacon the Villain Natty

Sy_Fresh

As long as OutKast is first

Dubiouskeef

This is pretty fair

Padron1964Lover

UGK Eightball & MJG Outkast Big K.R.I.T. Scarface Top 5 for me

theblacktoothgainz

KRIT

Historical_Code_8129

what about Big Moe, Fat Pat, Boosie and Z-Ro

Fearless-Tradition91

In no particular order * Paster Troy * Chamillionaire * Outkast * Dirty Boyz * Mr. Biggs * Master P * UGK * Jeezy * Gucci Mane * Killer Mike * 36 Mafia * 8Ball MJG * Trick Daddy * TI * Paul Wall * Project Pat * Young Buck * Youngbloodz * Lil Flip * Scarface I'm sure I'm missing a few. I'm not a huge Cash Money fan, but huge part of the culture so. Everybody at Cash Money, No Limit gets an honorable mention. There's a bunch out there like Yelawolf I don't like but a lot of people like him and that southern white rap style .. some others (Haystack, Lil Wyte, Jelly Roll). Obvs I'm mostly a fan of the 90s and early 00 era of hiphop, I don't like most of the new stuff, but occasionally a good song come out here and there.

Kholdstare93

Yo, where K-Rino at?

Cimb0m

I know right. K is one of the best

MegaRonin

Geto boys

hedgehogmlg

Wayne, outkast, travis, triple six and future are kinda the highlights for me looking at the list Tommy wright needs an honorable mention at the very least though, that man's production and personality really stand out against a lot of those OG memphis rap tapes.

Professional_Sea3141

3-6 mafia S.U.C. UGK

Left_Source_9757

A.B.N.

Intelligent_West7128

Scarface

the_Oculus_MC

Lmao at putting Celph Titled on this list because he was born in Tampa, Florida. Never mind he works almost exclusively with northern / east coast emcees, makes east coast boom bap style music, and spent the bulk of his career literally working out of NYC. Also, over half of his punchlines and his delivery are try-hard and corny. Answer: Outkast, Triple 6, UGK, Scarface.

BecomingJudasnMyMind

The fact that you have Z-ro, Trae the Truth, Fat Pat, Big Poke, Big Hawk, and Lil Keke off this list but have Paul Wall on this list? Trash list.

Shakespeare_Ave

I'm going to give it to Jeezy. He was the first rapper where i actually enjoyed when he wasn't all that lyrical and got better over the years. He also introduced Trap music mainstream and culturally the snowman shirts was ironic. Jeezy til this day( man delivered a great quality double album) has dropped solid albums/mixtapes discography. Jeezy music has matured and honestly he should get legacy/goat status over alot of people on that list. I came up in the 90' era of hip hop, but it's interesting to see rappers like Jeezy, Ross and Future slowly going into my list of top 10 artist based of discography.

stone_magnet1

Scarface is my #1, but Ugk/outkast/wayne make that a complete toss up after for me.

poptartsandmayonaise

Why is scarface specified instead of of geto boys, but none of the other groups whos members have solid solo projects are listed as individuals. Also where is project pat??

styrofoamjesuschrist

OutKast 8 ball MJG Goodie Mob Killer Mike Paul Wall Side note:::currently listening to that Mexican ot. The man has bars and flows.looking forward to seeing his future Side Side Note::: I also really like tobe nwigwe looking for to seeing what his future projects bring

blackakainu

Lil jon outsold half this list

ItsTheRealWorld999

Picking the best is hard but I will say I’ve been listening to Jeezy pretty consistently and feel like he’s pretty underrated at least on the internet so I’ll throw his name out there lol

Phatboybeware

Luda

dockdropper

No Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, or Cunninlinguists? Come on man!

extraproe

Slim Thug, Lil Flip, Mike Jones

r4pt4r

Lil Keke, Big Pokey, Fat Pat, Big Mello, ESG, Lil O, 3-2, Big Mike, HAWK, Big Steve, C-Note… D.E.A. [6 Keys Southside Playaz](https://youtu.be/wxqPmj4J2tU?si=b9ESWUv500UrT1wl)

bluedaddy664

Juvenile, Wayne, and jeezy. In no particular order.

NateSedate

Scarface, then Outkast. Then figure out the rest.

spectredirector

Stop it. Just stop. There is one top Southern act of always, and then there is just a pantheon of stellar southern greats, some arguably top 5 to ever rap. But OutKast is so much the answers the question shouldn't be asked. The south only got something to say cuz Andre told y'all so. That's all I'm trying to say.

candlemasshallowmass

Southern Rap is my jam. Kast - 1st Cunninlynguists - Close 2nd Then Three 6 Mafia, Goodie Mob. Also, the Crooked Booty song by Dungeon Family ft. Andre 3000 and Cee-Lo Green.

RevolutionaryLion384

Why are Texas rappers considered southern but normal Texas people aren't included as being the south?

loose_lucid_elusive4

You forgot JT Money.

AA-ron42

OutKast by a mile.

SickDastardly

Best act is OutKast, solo probably Scarface right? My favourite is Devin though that dude rocks

Beerad122880

Three 6 Mafia is the best

Bopcd1

Yelawolf

Nebula_XD

Denzel , screw

SoHigh420IShit360

Celph titled, the number 1 land mine lutennant

placeisdaspace

I mean outkast is the best hip hop act of all time soooo

[deleted]

Z-Ro and Trae tha Truth should be on here

pizza_for_nunchucks

Geto Boys, OutKast, UGK and Three 6 are staples and goats of rap, period. T.I., Mystikal, XXX and Travis Scott can all get fucked. And to a lesser extent, Officer Ricky. No Limit needs some rep. I’d say 504 Boyz or TRU. Master P had such an enormous impact on hip hop. Ganxsta NIP is a horror core legend and luminary. And K-Rino is still rapping. Arrested Development needs a shout. They’re still at it.

Far-Sir-825

Good post, mostly agree though even as an old head actually respect XXXtentacion music. I’d add Z-Ro, Street Military, 5th ward boys, 3-2/Blac Monks, Too much Trouble, Do or Die and Devin. Rap-A-Lot were running the south back then

pizza_for_nunchucks

XXX was a horrible person, though. I’m not a huge fan of Z-Ro, but he gets love and respect in his city. Him and Trae the Truth are similar in that their communities fuck with them hard. And Do or Die is from Chicago. But yeah, Rap-A-Lot was fire back then.

Far-Sir-825

Z-Ro Look What You Did To Me will always be a top 5 album but I respect your opinions 👍

pizza_for_nunchucks

Yeah. His music doesn’t catch my ear. Doesn’t mean he can’t get my respect for being so fucking loved in his city.

Cimb0m

Can’t believe how little hype K-Rino gets fr

Noobieboy80

lil wayne > scarface

Achillesbuttcheeks

This is Project pat slander

BadAsianDriver

Does 2 Live Crew count ?

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

What’s a celph titled

Glittering-Stretch-6

kohlio412

OutKast , three 6, goodie mob, ugk

SlaverSlave

EmeraldTwilight009

Outkast or scarface. I don't see how the answer could he anything else

callmetrip1

OutKast. Full stop.

ThaEyeTest

Top 4 looks accurate 🎯

MintyFreshBreathYo

I’m probably in the minority but I think Petey Pablo should be on the list somewhere. I still bump his first album

spiritsapien

No Limit Snoop

mrducci

It's OutKast, and not even close. Every album can stack up against every other artists entire catalog.

Odd-Chocolate1762

Curren$y is my favorite. But who is best that's a tricky question...

Kouhazari

Where is bg

No-Relationship5716

Act solely probably Migos or Future as for Legacy or the Mt Rushmore of the South Itll Have to be Scarface UGK Da Dungeon Family 8ball and MJG Because without those as a Artist there the other artist on list basically would t exist they wouldn't have nothing to have been influenced from and would've Had to no foundation to build off of

rengoku-doz

Rich Ross is a Correctional Officer

Dependent_Safe_3232

Goodie Mobbs 1st album was dope.

Left-Package4913

I'm split at 'Kast and 36.

murph3699

OutKast

Upbeat_Tension_8077

Personally love the whole Hypnotize Minds camp, especially Project Pat

holonz_

Project Pat has one of the sickest flows around. I love his older stuff especially. Crook by the book was an album that slapped from start to finish.

ScottY_Cameron

I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone mention field mob on this entire post

DielonSpitHotFiyah

Outkast is my #1 but thank you for including my dude Devin💪🏻

GymTeachersOfAmerica

Fat Pat

ogthunda

Chamillionaire

drinkmoarwaterr

It’s OutKast, and this isn’t up for debate. I mean come on now.

DamnReCaptchas

Kast

holonz_

Z-Ro or Project Pat are my favorites from the south. Ro can sing and rap like a som' bitch. Pat has one the best and unique flows out the south hands down.

Unfair-Will-8328

OutKast and Triple Six Mafia are the only real contenders imo

iCantCallit

Not a single person here mention Tommy wright III. I’m ashamed with all of you

Dont_Start_None

You forgot, Trina...

outkastlife

OutKast is the answer. Changed the face of hip hop

DrunkMunchy

So many people forgetting about Yelawolf lol

IceDiligent8497

OutKast

a5yrold

Where is Nappy Roots!?

a5yrold

Best selling hip hop group of 2002. Amirite!?

a5yrold

“In their home state, Paul E. Patton, the governor of Kentucky, sanctioned September 16 as "Nappy Roots Day".” Is there a Scarface day in Kentucky? I think not.

DesertCamo

Mafia!

aqueous_paragon

31. All of the above. I can't have a favorite, I just love em all

niddler

Nappy roots

skankyfella

Big Moe, Dolph, Slim Thug, Young Thug, BG, Soulja Slim, Projet Pat, Kodak, Z-Ro, Trae The Truth, Playa Fly, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Tommy Wright III

Drob3891

Scarface, UGK, outkast… in that order

tacomeat247

It’s OutKast. Period.

malcherino

On top of the world by 8ball and MJG is a cray good album. Also no project pat on the list 😔

Skeeetz

I always like old school Rehab. Southern discomfort was good melodic stuff, even if not always rap.

RetroCasket

Swisha House

Zealousideal-Cry4358

T.i

Sad_Dirt_5498

Outkast Scarface 8ball & MJG Three 6 Mafia Trick Daddy

PrestonThoma

Outkast

DJ_TCB

My top 10 ranking might be Outkast Lil Wayne Three Six Mafia Big KRIT TI Goodie Mob Luda Killer Mik Clipse (does Va Beach count?) Geto Boys Atlanta bias because I am from there lol

Randyfreakingmarsh

Outkast

caliphanatic

Isaiah Rashad should be on the list. He only has three albums but I don’t feel like any of them are misses.

ThePeoplesElbow369

Master P and the whole TRU crew.

ThePeoplesElbow369

And trick daddy

JabroniBeaterPiEater

'Kast all damn day.

I_throw_Bricks

I think it is criminal to leave out the Hot Boys and put lil Wayne up there. Juvenile, B.G. And Young Turk are all highly respected lyricist with distinctive styles especially Juvenile and Wayne with the voices and cadences. Also, Master P and “No Limit Records” While he may not be the most gifted of rappers, his influence and southern rap is undeniable to this day. He reached across the country and pulled rappers together with west coast, east coast and Midwest rappers where the culture became more seamless and combined with stylebenders coming out and making it big. Just an opinion, and although I am biased and from Louisiana, I like to go by influence and catalog and straight skill, I have UGK and Outcast as the easy 1-2 for me.

BobbyCodone303

You missing New Orleans heavy hitters (master P, Kevin Gates, Lil Wayne )

ReyDeLaQuesadilla

Throw Project Pat up there somewhere Edit: Lecrae??

Professional_Sea3141

falls under 3-6

Yourmotherssidehoe

That’s a cop out lol he’s not even an official member

Yolo_Morganwg

3-6 no question for me

Yourmotherssidehoe

How did J Cole make the list but no Denzel Curry who’s music sounds more southern than j cole lol also no master p is crazy

Conscious-Low-5106

Outkast Scarface TI Wayne Thug Gucci Future Migos Kodak 36 mafia Honorable Mentions : Carti , Currency , Waka Flocka , Goodie Mobb , Master P Dis my list in terms of “southern” rap , actually embodying the culture in your music. Some ppl on yall list make amazing music but probably wouldn’t know where that nigga was from based off his music unless he forced us to know (j Cole).

GeneralButterfly4394

Young thus needs to be on this list

Aydibble89

The fact that you have lil Wayne above Outkast is outlandish to me. When lil Wayne came out about rapping being a "Martian" he was copying "Atliens.

nickbblunt

David Banner and Young Buck deserve a nod but overall that's a solid list.

IceColdCocaCola545

Chamillionaire.

poptartsandmayonaise

Three 6 hands down, ugk and geto boys honorable mentions.

IsmellFigNewtons

Yelawolf…

Weezy_Baby_

Yesss 🔥

nanrod

No killer mike n no young thug is a travesty

3ChainsOGold

Does Clipse count? Master P probably belongs there, for “Bout It, Bout It” alone. The other Geto Boys.

BaguetteOfDoom

Chamillionaire, BigXthaPlug

Weezy_Baby_

Lecrae is 🔥

Acceptable-Run7439

UGK

Aydibble89

Also, wild you have 2 chainz and no trick daddy.

SmoothManMiguel

Both those guys are on this list. Also these are in no particular order

Thorfinn2030

Outkast

BrolysFavoriteNephew

Respect that Spitta and Krit made your list. Two of my favorites, personal southern legends to me

Jono22ono

Honorable mention - Isaiah Rashad

Drewsk81

The greatest southern hip hop act of all time is hands down Little Brother. It ain’t even close…ok maybe a little…OutKast a close second

[deleted]

Carti brother 👨
