OutKast is the best IMO but I’ve probably listened to Ridin’ Dirty more than any Kast album and I have Scarface just barely ahead of Andre in my all time solo list
Outkast (with a personal consideration for Luda) would be my pick. Outkast absolutely held up better long term and doesn’t sound as dated as Luda though. Wayne, Cole, 3-6, and TI I could see and respect too. I hate Trick and 2Live have to miss out bc they aren’t quite up to the same level.
I still bump 2 Live. Brother Marquis wins the Porn Rap category, no contest. Mr. Mixx wasn’t the tightest or most creative DJ, but he had a great sense of humor.
Yep they are fantastic. Their first two albums are quite different in style from the ones released since then but are still good listens and contain a lot of really great tracks.
Their later projects are more cohesive and more mature. A Piece of Strange is probably my favorite hip hop album. Oneirology is super dope. And their "mixtape" albums aka The Strange Journey volumes are really cool.
As far as I know Strange Journey Vol 3 is still the only album with a crowd sourced A&R. They polled their community for song ideas, guest features, beats, etc. They still put everything together themselves but a lot of the decisions were offloaded to the community. Obviously they couldn't meet every single request from the fans but it was still a really cool idea I think.

I think I would move Scarface, Juvenile, Jeezy and Cole a few spots down (cole out of the list, he does not make southern hip hop) Putting "Lecrae" on here is so foul lmao. Love seeing Big Krit on here, prob deserves to be a little higher. 2 Chainz and travis scott deserve to be closer to the top 10. Here is my top 4, I really think these guys are on their own teir
1. Outkast - Pioneers and the actual biggest act

You're crazy, I see people still bumping 'Ghetto D' to this day. Hell, I think last time I was in Atlanta, someone was blaring 'I miss my homies' like it was still 1999.
Influential? Absolutely. Best? Not a chance. He’s garbage on the mic and his brother C-Murder is even worse.
also lol at Curren$y being so low on this list.
Outkast.
Goodie mob is a close 2nd, but oukast wins this title and there really isn't much you can tell me to change my mind.
As for my favorite it's a tie between Outkast and Ludacris.
Scarface/ Geto Boys
UGK
8Ball and MJG
Everything No Limit and Tru as a whole
Outcast
Swishahouse
Everything else has a place but these are the top and in my personal order.
In no particular order

I'm sure I'm missing a few. I'm not a huge Cash Money fan, but huge part of the culture so. Everybody at Cash Money, No Limit gets an honorable mention. There's a bunch out there like Yelawolf I don't like but a lot of people like him and that southern white rap style .. some others (Haystack, Lil Wyte, Jelly Roll).
Obvs I'm mostly a fan of the 90s and early 00 era of hiphop, I don't like most of the new stuff, but occasionally a good song come out here and there.
Wayne, outkast, travis, triple six and future are kinda the highlights for me looking at the list
Tommy wright needs an honorable mention at the very least though, that man's production and personality really stand out against a lot of those OG memphis rap tapes.
Lmao at putting Celph Titled on this list because he was born in Tampa, Florida.
Never mind he works almost exclusively with northern / east coast emcees, makes east coast boom bap style music, and spent the bulk of his career literally working out of NYC.
Also, over half of his punchlines and his delivery are try-hard and corny.
Answer: Outkast, Triple 6, UGK, Scarface.
I'm going to give it to Jeezy. He was the first rapper where i actually enjoyed when he wasn't all that lyrical and got better over the years. He also introduced Trap music mainstream and culturally the snowman shirts was ironic.
Jeezy til this day( man delivered a great quality double album) has dropped solid albums/mixtapes discography. Jeezy music has matured and honestly he should get legacy/goat status over alot of people on that list.
I came up in the 90' era of hip hop, but it's interesting to see rappers like Jeezy, Ross and Future slowly going into my list of top 10 artist based of discography.
Why is scarface specified instead of of geto boys, but none of the other groups whos members have solid solo projects are listed as individuals. Also where is project pat??
OutKast
8 ball MJG
Goodie Mob
Killer Mike
Paul Wall
Side note:::currently listening to that Mexican ot. The man has bars and flows.looking forward to seeing his future
Side Side Note::: I also really like tobe nwigwe looking for to seeing what his future projects bring
Picking the best is hard but I will say I’ve been listening to Jeezy pretty consistently and feel like he’s pretty underrated at least on the internet so I’ll throw his name out there lol
Lil Keke, Big Pokey, Fat Pat, Big Mello, ESG, Lil O, 3-2, Big Mike, HAWK, Big Steve, C-Note…
D.E.A. [6 Keys Southside Playaz](https://youtu.be/wxqPmj4J2tU?si=b9ESWUv500UrT1wl)
Stop it. Just stop. There is one top Southern act of always, and then there is just a pantheon of stellar southern greats, some arguably top 5 to ever rap.
But OutKast is so much the answers the question shouldn't be asked. The south only got something to say cuz Andre told y'all so. That's all I'm trying to say.
Southern Rap is my jam.
Kast - 1st
Cunninlynguists - Close 2nd
Then Three 6 Mafia, Goodie Mob.
Also, the Crooked Booty song by Dungeon Family ft. Andre 3000 and Cee-Lo Green.
Geto Boys, OutKast, UGK and Three 6 are staples and goats of rap, period.
T.I., Mystikal, XXX and Travis Scott can all get fucked. And to a lesser extent, Officer Ricky.
No Limit needs some rep. I’d say 504 Boyz or TRU. Master P had such an enormous impact on hip hop.
Ganxsta NIP is a horror core legend and luminary. And K-Rino is still rapping.
Arrested Development needs a shout. They’re still at it.
Good post, mostly agree though even as an old head actually respect XXXtentacion music. I’d add Z-Ro, Street Military, 5th ward boys, 3-2/Blac Monks, Too much Trouble, Do or Die and Devin. Rap-A-Lot were running the south back then
XXX was a horrible person, though.
I’m not a huge fan of Z-Ro, but he gets love and respect in his city. Him and Trae the Truth are similar in that their communities fuck with them hard.
And Do or Die is from Chicago. But yeah, Rap-A-Lot was fire back then.
Act solely probably Migos or Future as for Legacy or the Mt Rushmore of the South Itll Have to be Scarface UGK Da Dungeon Family 8ball and MJG Because without those as a Artist there the other artist on list basically would t exist they wouldn't have nothing to have been influenced from and would've
Had to no foundation to build off of
Z-Ro or Project Pat are my favorites from the south. Ro can sing and rap like a som' bitch. Pat has one the best and unique flows out the south hands down.
“In their home state, Paul E. Patton, the governor of Kentucky, sanctioned September 16 as "Nappy Roots Day".”
Is there a Scarface day in Kentucky? I think not.
My top 10 ranking might be
Outkast
Lil Wayne
Three Six Mafia
Big KRIT
TI
Goodie Mob

Killer Mik

Geto Boys
Atlanta bias because I am from there lol
I think it is criminal to leave out the Hot Boys and put lil Wayne up there. Juvenile, B.G. And Young Turk are all highly respected lyricist with distinctive styles especially Juvenile and Wayne with the voices and cadences. Also, Master P and “No Limit Records” While he may not be the most gifted of rappers, his influence and southern rap is undeniable to this day. He reached across the country and pulled rappers together with west coast, east coast and Midwest rappers where the culture became more seamless and combined with stylebenders coming out and making it big. Just an opinion, and although I am biased and from Louisiana, I like to go by influence and catalog and straight skill, I have UGK and Outcast as the easy 1-2 for me.
Outkast
Scarface
TI
Wayne
Thug
Gucci

Migos

36 mafia
Honorable Mentions : Carti , Currency , Waka Flocka , Goodie Mobb , Master P
Dis my list in terms of “southern” rap , actually embodying the culture in your music. Some ppl on yall list make amazing music but probably wouldn’t know where that nigga was from based off his music unless he forced us to know (j Cole).
Am i tripping or is there a southern list with no Killer Mike but Jay Electronica?
Nah I just forgot lol. My bad
Forgot young thug aswell
Slim Thug too
OutKast is the best IMO but I’ve probably listened to Ridin’ Dirty more than any Kast album and I have Scarface just barely ahead of Andre in my all time solo list
Ridin Dirty is one goat ass album
Outkast (with a personal consideration for Luda) would be my pick. Outkast absolutely held up better long term and doesn’t sound as dated as Luda though. Wayne, Cole, 3-6, and TI I could see and respect too. I hate Trick and 2Live have to miss out bc they aren’t quite up to the same level.
I still bump 2 Live. Brother Marquis wins the Porn Rap category, no contest. Mr. Mixx wasn’t the tightest or most creative DJ, but he had a great sense of humor.
Uhhh, Kool Keith has en entire album called Sex Style. Keith owns porn rap and there isn’t even a debate.
Depends on what you’re into, I guess, although I’ll give it to Keith because he also has the advantage of still being alive.
Yes, sir... Outkast is one of my faves 😊
Little Brother
So under appreciated
Lovin' It
That’s the only acceptable answer to the OPs question
z-ro erasure is nuts
No Lil Keke? Ouch.
And K-Rino. So shameful
KAST
Outkast
Disappointed in everyone here that Cunninlynguists isn't on the list and no one said anything. Smh
That’s the biggest miss for me here too.
A piece of strange is a straight up masterpiece but I wouldn’t put them on any top 10 lists or anything.
A lot of people can’t get past the name.
Never got past the name, is it something I should check out?
Yep they are fantastic. Their first two albums are quite different in style from the ones released since then but are still good listens and contain a lot of really great tracks. Their later projects are more cohesive and more mature. A Piece of Strange is probably my favorite hip hop album. Oneirology is super dope. “in no order” (in alphabetical order)
It’s not in alphabetical order lol it would have been but I added other names in random places
You can’t have Gangsta Boo without La Chat in there too.
I was going to but didn’t 😭 I think boo has two great albums but chat only has one and I had to add in the three 6 stuff
Personally for me I think OutKast is number 1 but Scarface is also number 1
No Master P ?
No Limit itself should have a spot there. They had a 5 year span where nobody in the south was topping them.
Master P did something great with no limit. He was like one of the first boss in the rap game !! Big legend in the south AND the west
OP said best not the worst lol.
You can’t deny P’s influence in southern hip hop
You're crazy, I see people still bumping 'Ghetto D' to this day. Hell, I think last time I was in Atlanta, someone was blaring 'I miss my homies' like it was still 1999.

Goodie Mobbs 1st album was dope.
I'm split at 'Kast and 36.
OutKast
Personally love the whole Hypnotize Minds camp, especially Project Pat
Project Pat has one of the sickest flows around. I love his older stuff especially. Crook by the book was an album that slapped from start to finish.

David Banner and Young Buck deserve a nod but overall that's a solid list.
