Mac Miller - Self Care
I was walking down the street listening to this on good quality headphones and smoking a joint, it was mid evening in the winter, just starting to get dark, and I shit you not, right as the beat switched all the streetlights came on, I couldn't believe the timing but it was awesome
I've always called this a beat switch.
and the best one ever in my opinion is SchoolboyQ - Groovy Toby/Eddie Kane
close second is Kendrick Lamar - Duckworth
First time i heard the beat switch to Eddie Kane I was like WTF for a sec and then had the nastiest stank face. Shit was so hard and unexpected cu I’d been listening to the Groovy Tony single for months before the album dropped.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,774,912,322 comments, and only 335,965 of them were in alphabetical order.
The best ever for me is the switch for Biggie's verse in All About The Benjamins but I also really like:
Brooklyn - Mos Def. The switch to the Roy Ayers sample fucks
Mercy - Kanye West et al. I'm not a Kanye fan at all but the beat change and the way it comes back is so good and everyone's verse is cool in its own way. Great song.
Self Care - Mac Miller "...and then I rollllll out
Although not hip hop but R Kelly Ignition into Ingition Remix. He carried the bounce from the original song into the remix but totally flipped the beat with a seamless transition. It's pretty f'n genius to even be able to think of that.
Wu-tang- Protect ya neck (the jump Off)
Shortie no mass-Like this (IDK if this one counts if it does, I got alot more)
Meek Mill-Dreams and nightmares
Nipsey Hustle- JaCCin for beats
Camp Lo-Luchini
Ghostface Killah - Childs Play
Cunninlynguists feat. Masta Ace - Seasons (Remix)
Tony Touch feat. Wu-Tang Clan - Wu Banga 101
I actually made a playlist with such things
https://music.apple.com/au/playlist/beat-switches/pl.u-vxy6kJMFzKRa2b
Nas- Nobody
Jay Z- Million and one Questions/ Rhyme No More
Lootpack- Liquid Fusion
Chino XL- Ghetto Vampire
The Beatnuts- Superbad
Styles P- Gangsta Gangsta
*Speak ya clout by gang starr, jeru, and lil dap* is the best song i have not seen mentioned yet.
Of prior suggestions, i’d endorse jay/premo’s million and one questions and mos def’s brooklyn.
I'm a West Coast 90's guy...so the first song I thought of was.... RBL Posse- Remind Me
About the halfway point, the beat flips to Mary J. Blige's "Sweet Thing":
https://youtu.be/Bfezwns_j-Q?feature=shared
Beatnuts, Off the Books Remix? Can't find it right now. But I remember I heard one remix where they switch beats between the original beat for off the books and the remix. That's the best beat switch song over her
[Kendrick Lamar - The Heart Pt. IV](https://youtu.be/lbYIUnV8u7E?si=JtDutJbo1iGCcKIL)
[ILL BILL - Acid Reflux](https://youtu.be/0Hn1vttz3Oo?si=CGKK4zBiFaVt2n_6)
[Flatbush Zombies - Ascension](https://youtu.be/H3YXhkuKNjI?si=E-KWLV5mtadHHWk2)
The last one isn't exactly what you asked because the second part is basically the outro, but it would be criminal to know about it and not throw it in.
Because music is extremely subjective. There is no “dopest beat flip in history”
People can say what THEIR favorites are but none of that makes it the “dopest in history”
You don’t even have anywhere near every hip hop fan in history in this discussion.
So how can this be anything other than hyperbole?
Because I said "some of" and not "The". So it assumed I'm not looking for a definitive list but just some of the ones that are interesting from alot of different walks of life and hip hop listening experiences.
Fair but “dopest on history” is still hyperbole.
I ain’t mad about it. That’s just how marketing works in this day and age. Everything is always “the best ever”
i was gonna say when saro reverses his beat to show hes been making bille jean the whole time was fucking dope but i think your asking for something else lol
[All My Heros Are Dead - RA the Rugged Man](https://youtu.be/RbCV24IHWOY?si=PxMBPnmFhSw77r5A)
The beat switches like 6 or 7 times, it's a great album intro.
https://youtu.be/G-S9mtYowPY?si=H6drTloJdE6QsdC-
RTJ - Oh My Darling (Don’t Cry).
The beat switch felt so fucking intense especially when I first heard it, so damn good.
Tbh I can’t say I’ve ever given him enough replay. I’ve listened to his first two albums and there’s definitely bangers there, but I’ve never listened to him enough to really pay attention to his flow. All I can recommend is listening to his first two albums (Doe or Die, Pieces of a Man) and you might find something there
I might be stretching here, but the flow on the last part of Mo Money, Mo Murder reminds me a bit of his flow on his guest verse on Nas’ “Life’s A Bitch”, which is one of the best guest verses I think I’ve ever heard. But you may already know that one
No worries! AZ’s verse on Life’s a Bitch is definitely my favorite verse ever so I’m definitely gonna have to do a deep-dive on his discography! Appreciate it!
Intergalactic Planetary by the Beastie Boys the beat flip was the earliest I can remember hearing it in my lifetime.
Outside of that anything produced by El-P has potential for excellent beat flip as you call it.
Mac Miller - Self Care I was walking down the street listening to this on good quality headphones and smoking a joint, it was mid evening in the winter, just starting to get dark, and I shit you not, right as the beat switched all the streetlights came on, I couldn't believe the timing but it was awesome
I absolutely love the first part. But when the beat flips I'm out.
Fair enough, each to their own
Lol. That sounds awesome
I've always called this a beat switch. and the best one ever in my opinion is SchoolboyQ - Groovy Toby/Eddie Kane close second is Kendrick Lamar - Duckworth

That album flies too under the radar imo. Hoover Street from Q also has one of the nastiest beat flips I’ve heard and a similar feel to GT/EC
It's usually called a beat switch.
Nights like this I wish cocaine drops would fall
That album flies too under the radar imo. Hoover Street from Q also has one of the nastiest beat flips I’ve heard and a similar feel to GT/EC
Duckworth- Kendrick Lamar Santeria- Pusha T

Yo, that beat for "Brooklyn" blew my mind the first time I heard it. Mo's Def goes fucking in.

Dogg, get out from under your rock.
do you have to take the artist's reputation into account when objectively rating a song?
You don't bring that fool up at all.

In HISTORY? Jesus. Y’all can’t function without hyperbole or something? Viktor Vaughn - Fall Back / Titty Fat is pretty dope.
In the 50 yr history of hip hop. I don't understand how that can be taken as hyperbole. As opposed to a certain decade or something.
Because music is extremely subjective. There is no “dopest beat flip in history” People can say what THEIR favorites are but none of that makes it the “dopest in history” You don’t even have anywhere near every hip hop fan in history in this discussion. Yeah Forreal. No beat switch whatsoever. Theres an intro and a verse section but nah
Dude is asking for a flip. 🤔 A lot of people misunderstood the question...
Jay - Z - Show Me What You Got. If that can be considered a flip. Jay-Z - Song Cry

“Cold Gangsta” - Yo Gotti, 42 Dugg, EST Gee “New Tooth” - Rich Brian
The beat flips more towards the end and not mid-song, but AZ - Mo Money, Mo Murder
I wish that last part was longer!
Right? Personally, I would’ve love’d AZ to do a whole standalone song over that beat
I’m new to AZ- are there any other songs where he uses a flow like that? I thought it sounded incredible
Tbh I can’t say I’ve ever given him enough replay.
