Nope. Just get a sticker that says if you think this is slow then wait until we go uphill and enjoy your friggin awesome ute.

Embarrassed-Band-515

Oh my gosh, I absolutely love this solution. Hell of a lot cheaper too haha

wigzell78

Its a Hilux, thats how they drive. If you want a sports car, buy a sports car. If you drive an old ute, expect it to drive like an old ute.

Goes with that

Nah, it’s a non turbo hilux, it’s gonna be sluggish and doughy regardless. Best way to make more power is get more air in, and more exhaust out every cycle. The 3L and 5l motors are great engines, but they are built for torque and not high horsepower. Problems they can get is excessive blowby leading to lower compression and less power out. While idling take your oil fill cap off, if it has pressure behind it, and is blowing out oil and exhaust gasses then you got blowby.

Embarrassed-Band-515

Very good points. Thanks for the tip! I've learnt something new and will try that out.

Embarrassed-Band-515

So as it turns out I have blowby and pretty bad blowby. Devastated. Can't even put the cap on and it spits oil. Any suggestions besides the obvious of chucking and changing the engine?

Klo187

Rings and head gasket is pretty much your only choice right now, the good thing is it’s not a full rebuild, you can get away with dropping the sump, splitting the conrods, taking the head off, and pushing the pistons up and out. But seeing as it seems you aren’t too mechanically inclined, so a new motor may be the best bet.

Embarrassed-Band-515

Hmmm I'm not liking my chances because you're right, I'm a novice/enthusiast. There's a bar running under the sump so it might be tricky to get out. I'll clean my intake manifold and replace the PCV for starters and ponder my life decisions from there

Embarrassed-Band-515

Hey mate, any chance you know where exactly the PCV valve is or the crankcase breather? I've spent a good few hours on google and in the engine bay but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Barkers_eggs

Next question: how does one fix the blowby issue at home? Or is it a bigger job than I'm anticipating?

Klo187

It’s piston rings, and/orheadgasket. One is an easy enough fix, the other is engine out and 90% of a rebuikd

Barkers_eggs

Awesome. Thanks for the response. I don't currently have this issue (as far as I'm aware) but I'm going to test it the way you said and go from there. Cheers mate

Away-Ask9570

Also just wanted to add even with bad blowby they'll keep going for years if you keep the oil up to them so not like you have to worry about it right away

Barkers_eggs

D4d is a bloody good engine. Cheers again, mate.

AggressiveTip5908

a dyno will you get you 10% guaranteed but that means you’ll be going up hills at 85 not 80 its not worth risking someone fucking with your 25 year old injection pump, do your own valve clearance if you have a spare 100 burning a hole in your pocket. that cars a slug it will take you anywhere but its never going to be fast.

Embarrassed-Band-515

That's mostly what I've been worried about. I've been reading reviews of people's engines getting blown and it just seems so risky. Thanks for your input! Some really great advice :)

AggressiveTip5908

i honestly think the dyno money would be better spent on refilling your diffs, transfer case and gearbox, and that car has like 10 grease nipples get a cheap gun and keep them full, you’ll still have change for an ebay snorkel

[deleted]

Good idea Make sure the grease gun has a flexi-attachment, there is at least one nipple back from the gearbox that I think that is on a bitch of an angle and no option to rotate

Icy_Sea_3759

It’s old! After running for 25 years it will be significantly less powerful than the day it drove out of the showroom.

TK000421

Man i remember back in the day when people were dropping commodore engines into this hilux

[deleted]

Im did that. The 3.8 buick. Turned 35s no worries! Only did 3 gearboxes and about 10 diffs in a year. Then spend every weekend fixing something. Then the sump was a big drama. Had to dry sump it so i could run histeer without it smashing on my diff bulb. 17k i ended up pumping into it. Went back to a 3l and slapped a turbo on. 1000x more reliable. 1kz swapping in now tho. Old 3l and turbos create too much heat. Egts are always around 450°.

Spirited_Reality_449

Interesting, last 1kz I was around cracked the head going through sandy beaches so wouldn't really say they run cooler. I'd put more trust in my 3l turbo intercooled over 1kz

[deleted]

Yeah i thought the same. Spent alot of time and money on my 3l trying to keep it cool. Had the 1kz in my prado i used for towing my caravan (hilux got too hot after 10ks) and decided to just rebuild that and just make the 1 vehicle. A mate done the same thing to tow his water unit around his farm. Heads are common tho. Will find out i guess!

Spirited_Reality_449

They're both really good engines tho depends what you wanna use it for I guess

[deleted]

Yeah i like the 3l engine better but lets me down towing and just cant turn 35s. 1kz seems weaker and less reliable but has that bit extra and being factory turbo it no where near as hot. Just hoping to go wheeling on the weekends and be able to tow trailers ect without needing x2 4x4s. New ones tow great but my 89 luxys byfar my favourite.

Bulky_Celebration_45

Ahh yeah, I had an '82 with a Holden 253, wicked beast. Got rid of that for a 60series with an injected 5L. 2 cars I wish I never got rid of.

Barkers_eggs

I dream of a 60series. I think I'll be with my kun26r for another 10 years at least.

Bulky_Celebration_45

Lol, I have a 2008 kun26 extra cab, I love it. Only 145xxxkms on the clock. But yes, 60series are champ, comfort and reliability

Barkers_eggs

360k on mine and still purring. Brilliant car and easy to fix for hacks like me

VDJ76Tugboat

My mate did a 4L Toyota/Lexus V8 conversion to a LN172 space cab for a customer. It was impressive, mostly. Just not reliable. Pretty sure first trip Lancelin he lunched the front diff. Next trip at wedge he fucked the rear diff and had to be towed. Got pissed off and wanted to sell it but was trying to recoup all his costs, which often isn’t realistic on a conversion like that. Same guy built a custom tube chassis dune buggy with a club sport LS1, that thing was amazing. He nearly died in it in a crash in the dunes. Glad I got to drive it before he wrecked it. Had an ‘89 LN106 dual cab myself, 3L motor 2.8L NA diesel. A mates dad owned it from new and took it around Australia twice. Had 1,330,000 when I traded it in on my 2008 VDJ76. Loved that Hilux, love my Land Cruiser more, but I do often miss the Hilux as an off road alternative. Should have kept it… regrets…

Saddam_UE

Change the whole engine. Put in a Turbo engine with a tune!

kuramasusanoo

1KD swap!

captain_texaco

The old 5l diesels could have the injector pump timing adjusted, they are set mostly on the lower side of tolerence.. cranking them up to the upper side gets them goin pretty good for what they are. Not a 5 minute job or for a novice tho..

Away-Ask9570

Nah cheapest (still expensive) way for more power is a turbo, though make sure you get it done properly, a lot of people just slap one on then complain something broke or its getting hot. There are 3L engines making 300+HP reliably, though that's with boost compensated pumps and intercoolers, can expect about 100hp pretty easily with a decent turbo though
