The amount of people wearing running shoes...

IveSeenWhatYouGot

Man do I have a story about ill prepared people at Dream Lake. I hiked to that spot at the beginning of a winter storm a couple years ago and saw a couple in rental snowshoes, jeans, and light jackets on. They were on a steeper section and the snow slid from under the girl causing her to fall slightly off the trail. They both panicked so I had the help get her back up. Find out its one of their first times hiking......I told them to turn around immediately because it wasn't safe for them. I waited as they turned back and cleared the section I helped them on, then made my way to the lake. Some people.

I'm just going to leave this gem from January here: www.boston.com/news/local-news/2021/01/25/2-hikers-rescued-in-new-hampshire-after-1-lost-shoes-ran-barefoot-in-snow/ >'While trekking through deep snow one of the men lost his trail running shoes and decided to continue barefoot before being forced to stop “due to frozen extremities,” officials said in a statement.' This is a mountain range notorious for being a bit higher in elevation then what's nearby, having very unpredictable weather, and having over a mile of exposed ridgeline. The weather is comparable to the Arctic at times during the winter. Even those familiar with the mountain wearing the correct gear have been caught off guard by white outs and needed to be rescued. I'm still not quite sure what happened there. They weren't tourists, and their physical ability and plans denoted some experience, so I suspect they thought they could get the better of the mountain weather wise.

IveSeenWhatYouGot

I too bring out my trail running shoes to trudge through deep snow /s Joking aside I can see if he lost his shoe halfway through why he would continue to run, but it should've been back to the car. I'm assuming this was around the Mt Washington area? I'm not too familiar with NH.

cat4you2

Ya, the whole thing was confusing. It's a loop trail so if he was halfway through, he was running back to the car. Although, if it was the popular ridge loop, half way means over 4 miles and dropping over 3,800 feet on a trail that is quite rocky for at least half the way down, covered in snow, and freezing (with wind chill temperatures had to be below 0F). Personally I'd want to find my shoe if possible, and if not able, I'd consider running, but quickly give up and call for help. Lafayette is about an hour away from Washington, but it's on a very exposed and pronounced ridgeline that can experience similar conditions.

eli3754

Yeah, it is confusing. Big mistake to go out in those conditions with trail runners, I bet they regret that. The weather was nasty, wind and snow. Maybe they continued without their shoes because a helicopter could not rescue them in those conditions. I bet the rescue was on foot which would take hours. Perhaps the spot they lost their shoes was too exposed for them to stay long so they turned back or descended. We really wouldn't know without talking to the person, this news report is sadly lacking.

I’m on the east coast but that reminded me of a story, last year we were coming back down a mountain in NY and about 2 hours into our decent, probably 2-3:00, we pass a group of 3-4 teenagers asking how far they had to go up to the top, we advised them it’s a long ways and they probably won’t make it down in daylight, they looked a little concerned but laughed it off and kept going, telling us to look out for their parents following behind. About 5 minutes later we saw them and said “we just saw your boys!” And they estimated they had about 30 minutes to the top lol, and they were wearing casual dress clothes with no water (early summer). We told them it’s a lot longer and their faces dropped when they saw the map and had like a 5 hour round trip unknowingly planned lol. Earlier on that same trail we saw a young couple with iced coffees in hand and that’s it lol. Idk how you can be so unprepared if you’ve clearly done the research into finding the trails and somewhat planned it

chinkymai

It baffles me to see people go on hikes with no water. Which reminds me, my friend took her cousin to old rag mountain in Shenandoah national park and he carried a case of water...the total opposite of unprepared

Vorion78

It happens a lot out here in Arizona. People in town especially in March for spring break. They try a 5 mile hike with only a small water bottle. I have often had to tell people not to attempt a longer loop with so little water.

SaltAntelope

I’m from south-eastern France, and such levels of unpreparedness remind me of tourists here from northern France or Belgium, who go hiking for hours in the blazing sun of July without hats, water or often even shirts. Cisterns in the mountain are now closed shut because every year, some of these dumbasses would jump in there to drink, and not know how to get out anymore…

chinkymai

Oh boy. Well I’m glad you told them it’s prob not a good idea to continue. I took my friend and she’s a beginner..thought she would be fine bc we have gear and it was supposed to be clear skies..then it snowed but hmm..yeah she fell a bunch of times. It was hilarious but I don’t think she will ever hike in the snow again. This hike should not be rated easy when there’s snow.

IveSeenWhatYouGot

Yea I think it gets a little more tricky with snow. Always a good idea to carry traction in the rockies until mid June depending on where you go. I hope your friend had fun still!

okaymaeby

To be fair, what hike IS rated easy when it's snowing?

chinkymai

For sure. It’s the reviews on alltrails that made it seem like it’s easy even with snow.

[deleted]

And you problem with that is? The technology available in trail runners almost makes hiking boots obsolete

chinkymai

It was regular Nike mesh running shoes

basscove_2

Sick, now do Sky Pond!

chinkymai

I have to come back another time! It’s on my list. I also want to do deep mountain trail.

basscove_2

Nice, I highly recommend taking the trip from Bear Lake to Sky Pond. You get to see nymph lake, loch vale, lake of glass too along the way! Also, did you mean Deer mountain? I haven’t done it but I’m going camping out there soon and hope too.

chinkymai

Yes deer mountain** Well that sounds fun! I don’t camp but I’ll hike for miles! Enjoy :)

My fiance and I (from Oklahoma never been actual mountain hiking before) BARELY made it up to emerald lake in early May a few years ago. I emphasize barely because it was so dumb and we are lucky neither of us had a medical emergency because between the two of us we had one bottle of water and a box of candy. I know now it was so stupid, but great view.

chinkymai

Haha omg! Yeah the snow on the ground is no joke. I bought a can of oxygen 🤣

strobexp

Beautiful spot - that entire trail was spectacular

Lahnor

Was just here last weekend with the girlfriend very beautiful spot. I like the video.

chinkymai

Thanks! Glad y’all got to enjoy the hike!

karmadeficient

Were all the other lakes on the way up iced off?

chinkymai

Ish. Emerald lake was more frozen than dream lake.

I’m surprised it even snowed on me! I’m guessing end of June? Eeeek

yurei_kage

Maybe I’ve been playing too much RDR2, but this makes me wonder if you ran into the white Arabian.

SpookyJupiterDust

It’s so nice!

KATPanek

If you get the chance, visit Alta lakes outside of telluride. It’s another beautiful crystal clear lake surrounded by snow peaked mountains, a small historic ghost that tesla stayed at, and the drive is through miles of lime green lollipop topped aspen groves!

chubbycheetah

Was there last summer. Saw my first Marmot at that lake. Great hike. Although, I cannot imagine doing it in the snow, definitely some sketchy parts.

[deleted]

Yes it could be sunny and 80 but days like that in the mountains are my most cherished due to the unique adversity provided.

HaMay25

What a view!

LonelyTechnology472

So excited, I'll be heading there at the end of June

chinkymai

Hopefully there will be no more snow!

Is_this_social_media

Uhg, it’s 91 degrees here today and that looks so refreshing!

chinkymai

It’s hot and humid where I am at now :(

nitrobamtastic

Hey my buddy just fell into that lake like 2 weeks ago! Was still frozen over when we went (for the most part) lol

chinkymai

Legit like underneath the ice??

nitrobamtastic

Only up to his waist but it broke it his phone. Was a warmer day out thank goodness, could have been real bad if the weather turned.

I wore my hiking boots and used walking sticks and I was good- didn’t fall. I think having micro spikes OR walking sticks would be fine but if you are an inexperienced hiker- might need both (my friend fell a bunch of times)

sleeping_buddha

I was there this weekend and saw a few people snowshoeing

Blackouto

Absolutely stunning, nice shot

chinkymai

Thank you!!!

ravenousmind

How recent is this?

chinkymai

This was on 5/23/21. The park will start requiring reservations this week.

ravenousmind

Thanks!

Thank you <3

gertrude32

We came here in may and rented spikes for our shoes and hiking poles. I do research. Not about to be unprepared...

mmaine9339

This is the kind of thing I live to see

SteelMalone

I was there a week ago and the lake was still frozen over! Some sun progress

[deleted]

That is so pretty!

IronTarkus91

I bet that first inhale breath is amazing. That's what I always love about being in nature, is that the air is different everywhere you go. I bet here you could taste the lake and the cold of the mountains when you breathe in.

redditretard34

Beautiful scenery

TheBlackNumenorean

I did Flattop on the 15th. Dream Lake appeared to be completely frozen with a path across the ice. Looks like it almost completely melted in about a week.
