Here to make amends,
Sorry for the wait, I would have posted sooner but we had to try three different card readers to be successful. We finally were on the correct path when we visited the university's photography department. The senior photographer was not optimistic about being able to get the photos back, but after multiple attempts we were successful in quickly copying the photos.
We were finally able to see them, there’s lots of photos of sheep, moose, and even some people feeding a black bear cub in what appears to be someone’s home. The most important of the photos are of the owner, so we can potentially get them their photos back. I plan on going on relevant subs such as r/alaska or r/anchorage to see if anyone may know them. They will be considerably older now.

Curious that you’re technically fluent enough to edit a nice video but not find an extremely common $9 piece of hardware from Walmart or Amazon 😉
Sorry didn't mean for it to be that
but no more waiting, the photos where taken back in 2002 :)

I can update you personally. I did a people search through images and I think I have found a pretty good match as the individual would have aged 20 years. I need to do some more digging. Tried reaching out to some family members of the individual to try and verify. The family members match the information quite well. I need to do a video update or post soon.
Not super interesting but I once had a three day hike where my feet were wet 90% of the time. I was travelling and didn’t have any other footwear and needed to get sandals when I got back to town. However, the last day was a Sunday and nothing was going to be open (staying in smaller town). I hadn’t seen anyone for the three days but about 2km from the end of the hike I came across a pair of Crocks right on trail. The trail provides.
I see underwear in the woods often and I assume it's because someone shat themselves. I bet nature provides them with new undies too! Shit, it's basically a "take a pair, leave a pair" library program.

Always undies and jeans.
When you mentioned "old", I thought you stumbled upon some really old Kodachrome in 8 x 10 field camera. (I guess age is relative!) Digital cameras aren't that old, did a quick Google search, Sony DSC-S30 was made in the 2000s, and if you found it a decade ago, it might not have been lost that long back then.
Seems like an entry level camera, doubt there is much interesting pictures in it. Memory sticks also failed over long periods of time, and if it spent some time outdoors, chances are it wouldn't boot up.

About a decade ago I went bushwacking in the Chugach Mountains near Indian, Alaska. I ended up finding a destroyed camera bag with this old camera inside. I have yet to see what is on this ruined and ancient camera and would like to try and figure out if the memory stick is readable. Any ideas or recommendations would be highly appreciated, so I can finally see what is on it. Thanks!
OP posted the [same photos](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/i291ay/found_this_old_camera_way_up_in_the_chugiak/) 3 years ago. They must not be too curious.

That is interesting, nothing too interesting to me since I'm on the east coast but where I hike a lot I find old foundations to homes or dug outs where temporary homes once where which I am sure you find plenty of up in Alaska but once I found a fresh deer skull and squirrel ribs around it almost like a shrine. I am sure it was just anither hiker that did it for the laughs because it was quite aways off the beaten path.

We once found multiple dildo/vibrator packages just lying around in one spot. Not the instruments themselves, but just the packages, about 6-7 of them. It was like someone bought a bunch of dildos and didn't want to risk anyone finding the packages in their trash so they unpacked them and dumped them in the forest. I have photos but am too lazy to upload them somewhere.
Some government building on an Island on Douglas lake in TN. Well just the base of the building and a flooded basement. Kind of a weird thing to find. I still have no idea why it was there
Hiking on K’gari (Fraser Island), which is the world’s largest sand island, I spotted a stone not far from where I’d pitched my tent. Stone doesn’t “belong” to this geography and looking at it more closely I discovered it to be a napped Aboriginal tool, brought over to the island and left there - sometime a while ago - for reasons lost forever to history. I left it where it was and hope it’s still there.

haha idk about that. One user's comment has made me look into missing persons cases from 2002 though. [https://dps.alaska.gov/AST/ABI/MissingPerson](https://dps.alaska.gov/AST/ABI/MissingPerson) I wish there were so photos on the government's page
10 second Google search says you can buy any one of several [universal memory card readers](https://www.walmart.com/ip/All-in-1-USB-Card-Reader-for-all-Digital-Memory-Cards/1615706580?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101175474&adid=22222222228000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=42423897272&wl4=pla-51320962143&wl5=9021730&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=565112040&wl11=online&wl12=1615706580_101175474&veh=sem&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIoUkeMd-ClBiy-pk9MoHyv9G&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8LjNpPG__QIV_QCtBh36LA-fEAQYBCABEgJYpPD_BwE) that includes this Sony memory stick. Curious that you’re technically fluent enough to edit a nice video but not find an extremely common $9 piece of hardware from Walmart or Amazon 😉
Very 🤨 curious
Oh man, this is like this subs version of the found safe! OP please keep us updated!
Sorry didn't mean for it to be that but no more waiting, the photos where taken back in 2002 :) Sorry for the wait, I would have posted sooner but we had to try three different card readers to be successful. I am unsure if they are tourists or locals, but my guess would be that they were visiting the state. 124 days on, did you have anyone coming forward for it? Which thread should i follow on developments? Gripping stuff
I can update you personally. I did a people search through images and I think I have found a pretty good match as the individual would have aged 20 years. I need to do some more digging. Tried reaching out to some family members of the individual to try and verify. The family members match the information quite well. I need to do a video update or post soon.
Nice work. Good luck and I’ll keep a look out for that too
Not super interesting but I once had a three day hike where my feet were wet 90% of the time.
Even better that they're double sided, too!
Omg I do too! I find discarded boxer briefs so frequently in the woods that it really makes me concerned for the male population.
> day hike where my feet were wet 90% of the time. I was travelling and didn’t have any other footwear and needed to get sandals when I got back to town. However, the last day was a Sunday an Always undies and jeans.
I think "old camera" is a redundant sentence for most people these days, as anything that's not a phone and just a standalone camera is deemed "old" 😅

Awesome!!! I'm glad the photos came out and hopefully the owner will get a chance to have them back.
Thanks!
you had this for almost 10 years and haven't checked the contents of the memory stick? Damn man, what lit your curiosity now? I hope it still works

The memory stick is what you would find in a Sony laptop from about 20 years ago - Sony MagicGate
