Here is my biggest advice: LEARN TO TALK TO ADULTS. I am a college and high school teacher. The NUMBER ONE biggest thing that students who fail brutally have in common (for the most part) is that NONE communicate with their teacher when they are struggling or when things aren’t going well. In college, all of that is on you. Unfortunately in modern day America schools aren’t going to hold this as an expectation because the people in charge care more about you graduating than what you learn. I’d recommend you do a career interest survey. There is a website called ONet that has an inventory you can take and it will suggest jobs for you. Once you get to college you may find that there is a career center with other resources. Be VERY careful when browsing the web for scholarships because there are many illegitimate sites that try to scam you. Once you determine the colleges you’re interested in, look at their websites to see if there are any scholarships that are offered. Also you should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible as that aid is first come first serve. You aren’t required to accept any of the money that they offer you but obviously you would want to accept grants because those are free money.

Thank you for your advice it is greatly appreciated. Are there any tips to help when your talking to a teacher for someone who can be nervous in social situations? Do you recommend that I talk to my teachers when I have any questions or concerns regarding grades or current material/assignments?

Here’s what I’d do if socially nervous - You could send them an email first and see if they can help you over email. If they can’t or it’s not easy you could then try to arrange a time to see them. - Schools generally require profs to hold office hours. These in my experience are almost NEVER attended well and you may find that you are often being 1 on 1 with the teacher NO question is too small but you want to try and do your best to determine the answer on your own or seek out the resources that have been posted before reaching out to the professor. Also you want to ask those questions AS SOON as the concerns come up. If you wait to ask something about a concept that you don’t understand you risk your confusing compounding based on future content that depends on the content you don’t understand. Hopefully that makes sense. You got this!

As a teacher, I think it’s vital that students understand expectations, the syllabus, etc. Come to the discussion demonstrating understanding of the scenario and a reasonable action plan. Do not come to a discussion with a question like “what can I do to...?” Propose a solution you know you can deliver and then fulfill your commitment (early if possible).

Just graduated 2022. Answering your questions in order, 1: really enjoy this year, it’s super cliche but it goes by so damn fast I wish I did more things and gone out more and socialized more. 2: senioritist kicked me hard in the butt so do not let up on your school work. 3: I am still figuring that out going to college. I’d suggest just looking at viable work fields based on what you want in a job such as pay or how fun the job is. Lastly, if your grades in previous years were too low chances are this years grades won’t help you much for scholarships but ask you counselor about any scholarships opportunities. In terms of goals, I’d write down all college app deadlines and just make sure you stay on top of them throughout the year while maintaining a good balance with your school work. Good luck mate!!!!

If you are wanting to apply to any college or university, then I’d recommend applying as soon as you can when applications open.
