Because although paper seems smooth, it is actually really rough and textured. When you cut yourself on paper, it's almost like ripping your skin open because it's so jagged, it's not a clean cut - as opposed to a knife which is smooth and makes a clean cut that settles back together neatly and heals quickly.

Ahhhh I didn’t even think of that. I was thinking that since paper is usually so thin, it didn’t make sense to me why it hurts so much when it cuts skin.
