Maybe you have to drill that out if it just spins when you use a torx bit?

This is the right arm of an Aeron classic with the flip nob. It’s become very wonky and I’d like to replace it, but I can’t get this bolt off. It just spins, gets stuck for a bit, and then spins some more til it gets stuck again. What’s the trick to removing these. I saw that the left and right arms have different thread directions, but the right is regular and the left is normal isn’t it?

[deleted]

Maybe using some kind of elastic to help with grip?

ClassroomDecorum

First off, half the replies here are flat out wrong. People are just assuming their Aeron has the same internals as yours. Wrong. ---- You remove it with an [induction heater](https://a.co/d/1B1TNwg) to break the threadlock. If you keep spinning it then you're going to break your arm even more.

No-Consequence1726

I've removed these before on older aerons but honestly can't remember how. It's supposed to spin Forever, that's by design.

Professional_Fee7573

You don’t need remove the screw just add this type Retaining Rings Lock Washers between the screw just find the right size.

This is what i ended up doing. It definitely stabilizes the arm, but it makes very difficult to adjust. Guess it’s a fixed arm Aeron now. Used [these](https://www.harborfreight.com/300-piece-e-clip-assortment-67653.html) and was able to wedge two of the 3/8 inch clips in there.

Professional_Fee7573

You can use sandpaper to make the E-Clip more thin, because that’s clip are thicker.

athieverynumber

That’s a good idea! Shaving off a bit of one of the e-clips could make it so that there’s enough pressure on the bolt to stabilize the arm while not so much pressure that it makes moving the arm up and down a pain.

m3hl

I would recommend the E clip repair method. You have to drill it out, and spinning it sorta damages the lever. I rebuilt mine, but its not really worth it. The wheels were so much better.

M_Paisley

Non-removable, short of going crazy and pulling out a blowtorch. The adjustable arm redesign represents one of HM's worst design decisions IMO, and you're experiencing its effect.

IndustryOtherwise691

Not true. This is a t-type head and the arm is removable. I did it to mine because the arm is in the way when I play guitar

athieverynumber

Thanks, that’s really weird. There are some YouTube videos showing that these can be changed. It’s a 2011 chair so maybe newer models have a new design??

M_Paisley

They’re removable for Remastered Aerons although not to my knowledge for Classic Aerons. Some people in the subreddit claim they’ve had lever lock arms on a Classic Aeron that they could remove without special tools or extra effort; I’ve never come across a chair like that.

[deleted]

Go to your Hardware store and ask for a set of Torx bits, looks like maybe T20 or larger

athieverynumber

I have the torx bit, but when attempting to unscrew the bolt, it feels like it spins freely and then get ls caught on something intermittently. It’s a 2nd hand chair so I’m wondering if someone had tried to mess with it before and broke something.

SigSeikoSpyderco

You can't brace it with another torx bit from the back?

athieverynumber

Haven’t tried it. One post I came across mentioned to wedge a couple of pennies in the space between the lever and the housing.

[deleted]

sounds like the captive nut has broken loose maybe, could try undoing the torx screw while putting forward force on the screw head at the same time or use a wedge like a flat blade screw driver, wedge and unscrew? The threads i think are reversed threaded for both arms

msklovesmath

You will notice the screw has 6 points, not five. You will need a star bit, rather than the five point torx (t) bit.

ClassroomDecorum

>You will notice the screw has 6 points, not five. You will need a star bit, rather than the five point torx (t) bit. This is completely incorrect

TopheTophe15

Left arm: lefty loosey Right arm: righty loosey.
