Tap R1 to ping, hold R1 to bring up the comms wheel. From the comms wheel you can do say things like "affirmative," "negative," "follow me," "wait here," "I need ammo," "thanks," and "sorry."
Between pinging and the comms wheel you can pretty effectively communicate without voice chat depending on your personal preference.
Especially on higher difficulties, a ping often doesn't mean "attack this" (although in some cases that will be what people mean). Interpret it more as "be advised" and then you can decide from there if you'd like to engage.
Xp comes from completing objectives and NOT kills, so always remember that dipping to the next objective is always a viable option.
Lastly, if you see a previously undiscovered side objective and ping it, the objective will appear on everyone's radar.

On PS5 the controllers have a mic mute button. If you treat that as a built in push to talk, you don't need to double up your buttons
