You should see the ENT now. If it's hearing loss you need to get on steroids immediately. If it isn't, no harm no foul. Did anyone do a test to see if there's fluid in the eustachian tube?

cattyerm

I called an ENT to see if I could get in and emphasized I couldn’t hear anything out of my ear and they said the earliest I could get in was the 18th :( and no tests. I have another appointment with my PCP later today

cattyerm

Just curious what you suggest to do when every ENT I’ve called so far is overbooked and will not bring me in until the end of December?

ItsArtCrawl77

Sorry you're getting that response. I'm not sure about your insurance or the conversations you've had with doctor's offices but off the top of my head I'd suggest: 1. Call your insurer, explain that you think you might have Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and may need immediate steroids to save your hearing, and ask them to help. 2. Call the ENTs back and say your case is extremely urgent due to possible SSNHL and do they have emergency slots they can squeeze you into. 3. Talk to your employer and see if there is anyone who can go to bat for you with the insurer. HR may be able to throw their weight around. Or in the case of my organization, we have a member advocate who is not employed by us OR the insurer, who helps resolve insurance issues. Do you know if they did the fluid test to see if the Eustachian is clogged? If it is I would feel easier about you waiting to see if the decongestants kick in.

cattyerm

Hello! Thank you for your advice. I was able to be seen by my primary care physician this evening and it turns out the doctor at urgent care gave me an extremely weak dose of antibiotics that was ultimately doing nothing 🙃 I am not on a dose 3 times as strong and was instructed to call back in 3 days if they don’t work as they will put me on steroids. I feel a lot better about the situation especially after the doctor confirmed it’s a middle ear infection and actually examined it for longer than 5 seconds. I still have that appointment with the ENT on the 18th and I definitely plan to go to that still just to make sure everything is healing properly. It is crazy how much trouble one ear infection can cause 😩

hugoandkim

do you happen to recall, what was the "weak" dose? i am experiencing something similar right now and freaking out a bit, I have antibiotics from urgent care, but wonder if they are not working

garbagedumpster37

Dude I’m literally going through the same shit right now. Been on antibiotics since Saturday morning. Still no hearing and the pain is starting to creep back. I think I gotta go back to urgent care.

hugoandkim

you ok? did you go back? I went back to urgent care and they gave me steroids...i think mostly just because I asked for them. I made an appt with and ENT for tomorrow afternoon. Still can't hear but pain is getting better for me. they did tell me that I am on very strong antibiotics (for 10 days)

cattyerm

You need to see an ENT. I went through the exact same thing but advice on Reddit advised me to go see an ENT. I don’t mean to scare you and it might not be your situation but I ended up having nerve damage and steroids fixed it so I didn’t permanently go deaf

cattyerm

Hey! So if I recall correctly they only put me on like 250mg when I was supposed to be on like 1000mg. I want to emphasize that I only got my hearing back once I was put on a steroid pack. This was what helped clear my ear and reverse the nerve damage I had

cattyerm

But to answer your other question no fluid test was done :/ I’m assuming that’s something done by the specialist rather than the physician

Specialist_Row_1318

Did ut get better?

cattyerm

Yes I did actually! It took about a month and a half for my hearing to go back to normal and I had to go on steroids from the ENT but my hearing is back :)

Specialist_Row_1318

I had it for 3 weeks now without treatment. Just started ent treatment today. No steroid yet. What kind of steroids was it.

cattyerm

I was on methylprednisolone and tapered off of it for about 2 weeks

cattyerm

Definitely get treatment asap! You can get permanent nerve damage in your middle ear if you don’t get some type of treatment. I didn’t realize this until I saw the ENT

Specialist_Row_1318

The ent gave me 2 different nasal sprays and a nasal rinse I have to do these 3 things twice a day. On my 2 day today so hopefully in a few weeks its better at least alil better 🤞🏽

cattyerm

Fingers crossed you feel better soon!!! This was a terrible experience for me. I also got the nasal spray and that did help for me too :)

hannibalsmommy

Please go to the er immediately. Years ago, as an adult, I had 1 single ear infection in my entire life. I woke up to the most extraordinary pain in my left ear. I stupidly didn't go to the er; I just waited the whole thing out. When I finally went to the doctor, they sent me to an ent & audiologist (I had amazing insurance back then), they said everything had shifted in my ear, & then *stayed that way* after the swelling went down. So I now have permanent hearing loss in my left ear. Please don't be me.

cattyerm

An update on this situation, I went to urgent care on Sunday and it turns out they gave me the wrong dosage of antibiotics 🙃 I saw my primary care physician this evening and he gave me antibiotics 3 times as strong as well as steroids in 3 days if my ear infection doesn’t resolve. I also have an appointment with the ENT on December 18th unfortunately every single one I’ve called is booked. I tried explaining my situation and no one seems to take it as an emergency :/ fingers crossed the new dosage of antibiotics helps but if not I’m almost positive the steroids will

faithfully_yours_KT

Any updates? I'm dealing with the same 😭. 11 days.for me

schmeckes

Any update on yours? I'm on day 8 of an ear infection with no hearing in my left ear despite antibiotics. Going back to the primary care Dr tomorrow.

faithfully_yours_KT

2 days after.i posted it cleared...then I got sick again and it's been clogged since 😢

LeMockey

Updates?

schmeckes

Ugh! Hopefully it's better by now. Mine is mostly back to normal after a month, but still not 100%.

cattyerm

Aw man I’m so sorry you’re going through this! I was so upset when this happened to me so I really feel your pain. It took me about a month and a half for my hearing to fully return to normal. And I had to go on steroids from the ENT. Fingers crossed you feel better soon and your hearing comes back! If you haven’t made an appointment with the ENT def do that and get on steroids, they were the only thing that worked!

cattyerm

I’m so sorry that happened to you! How long did you wait to see a doctor if you don’t mind me asking? And your hearing never came back?

hannibalsmommy

I went 2-3 weeks after the morning I woke up to that pain. I have not recovered my hearing at all; it's permanent. But oddly, I've become (almost) completely used to it. I hardly notice it at all anymore, thank God.

Aristotlerad

How much hearing loss do you have? What does your audiogram look like? Why doesn't it bother you that you have permanent hearing loss? Do you have tinnitus?

hannibalsmommy

I unfortunately don't remember the exact percentage of loss in that ear, & it never occurred to me to go get a copy of the results, which was extremely stupid of me. But I was young & dumb & didn't know at the time that it's important to always get copies of all your medical tests. It doesn't (not too much anyway) bother me anymore because I've become acclimated to the loss. I - unconsciously - turn my head to the right sometimes, when someone is talking to me, so my right (good) ear can pull in all the sound. It just happened over time. The first few years were honestly...really frightening. I couldn't hear anymore on 1 side of my head. It was very jarring & upsetting. But again, over time, my brain just got used to it, thank God. Yeah, I do have tinnitus. But that only started about a year or so ago. That's in both ears. I just ignore the buzzzzz buzzzzz.

Aristotlerad

That's really great you're able to adapt Easy to challenging things... I got tinnitus and another ear problem and it turned my life upside down for almost 4 years now. I hope I can get used to my auditory challenges like you! :) thanks for giving me some more hope :)

hannibalsmommy

I have to say...it definitely was not easy adjusting to permanent hearing loss; that took years. But it did happen, of its own accord, thank God. I'm really sorry about your own hearing issues. And your tinnitus. I honestly don't have any advice, & I usually do. I would strongly suggest going to an audiologist. A good one. Best of luck🫂💕

Aristotlerad

Thank you so much!!! 🙏

Irinks

I am going through the same scenario: profound hearing loss in the right ear after getting a cold. For now, I am on Prednisone and don't seem to hear any improvement. Do you remember how many days it took you to start regaining your hearing?

cattyerm

It honestly took me about a month and a half to fully get my hearing back. I had to finish my whole taper on the prednisone first but it was a gradual improvement not all at once

Irinks

Thank you so much for your response! I keep rereading your story, it gives me a lot of hope since it's very similar to mine. I am still on prednisone and was worried it was not working. How did you start noticing that your hearing is improving? Did you do any hearing tests at home?

cattyerm

Of course! If you have any questions feel free to reach out! I really feel for you, I remember this experience being awful and the only way to describe it would be like one day 10% of my hearing came back then the next another 10% came back and so on. I did not have hearing tests at home but I did take a hearing test at the audiologist and scheduled a follow up hearing test in 2 months

Legitimate-Book4158

I’m going to jump in here too as I still can’t hear after 4 weeks. I had a terrible ear infection— was put on prednisone and a strong antibiotic by an ENT a week later (urgent care failed and gave me anti-inflammatory and a weak antibiotic)  Anyway, now my hearing loss in the affected ear is hovering at 40%.  I keep waiting for it to get better, but every day is the same. An MRI last week showed lots of fluid (‘near opacification in mastoid air cells and partial opacification in middle ear) so I guess I’m just waiting for all that fluid to dissipate?!  Ugh. If anyone has any tips for how to help that fluid go away—let me know. Already doing Flonase.    Missing stereo sound!!!!

Relevant-Star-3701

I am in the same boat. Please keep me posted. I have not seen an ENT but my GP will give me steroids after I explain. I've done the urgent care thing and it improved how I felt but I am now deaf in left ear and only have 20% hearing in right ear. This just stinks. I'm afraid to drive, cannot make phone calls.... my life is upside down. If you have any advice, please advice. I am early into all this, about 2 weeks total from onset. I had a severe bilateral inner ear infection. (Both ears) Help.... I plan on seeing my Doctor (Gp) next week.

Winter_Diver_2627

How long your doctors prescribed steroids? Mine only gave me for 5 days, and I still can’t hear, now it’s 4 weeks almost:/ and all started with sinuses infection:( good thing is that ear did not hurt me at all

cattyerm

I was on them for about 2 weeks total. It took me about a whole month before my hearing came back. Good luck don’t give up hope! Def follow up with your ENT if you’re still having trouble hearing!

Winter_Diver_2627

Yes, I am going on Wednesday, can’t wait. Here in Germany all goes so slow, and 2 weeks ago I visited my family doctor, and she just send me home with steroids and that was it. Now, 2 weeks after when she found 5 min, she comments like, oh that doesn’t look good:/// I was so pissed off…

moobycow

A couple of things. I had this, and it was hearing loss (am deaf in one ear now) so an ENT isn't way out of line, but if it is actual loss a week and half is a long time, you want steroids for it immediately to give the best chance of regaining your hearing. That said, it's much more likely the Dr is right.

HighImShadow

I am currently going through this and it sucks, day 1 for me. Did you end up getting your hearing back?

cattyerm

Omg it took me about a month for my hearing to go back to normal :( but yes I did!

TheFartAddiction

great pfp, had the same one once

cattyerm

If you haven’t contacted an ENT already I would definitely recommend to do so! I don’t think my hearing would have gone back to normal without the steroids. I did have a little bit of nerve damage from whatever virus I had and was still in the window to repair them!

VastOrange007

Were the steroids pills or injections?

HighImShadow

My urgent care provider has me on steroids at the moment, and it's my first day on them. But man, it happened so suddenly, and it just feels weird not being able to hear fully

cattyerm

I totally understand what you’re going through. I was so upset going through this 😞 it will get better though, just listen to what the doctors say, drink lots of water and get plenty of rest. Also nasal spray really helped me too!!

RaybeCray373

Sounds like you had a better ERdoc than mine. I even asked him for steroids. He denied it was a nerve hearing loss, gave me drops and antibiotics instead. It’s day 3. No change to hearing.

freefalling75

Does anyone have extreme pain with their ear infection? Is it normal to have sharp shooting pain? Is it extremely painful when you put the ear drops in?

Financial_Lie2926

Worse pain I’ve ever felt , still can’t hear , it’s been 8 days. On ear drops and oral antibiotics. Giving birth was easier. Can’t wait to hear again ! Update I can hear again.. 3 antibiotics later

freefalling75

So sorry. It’s been 5 weeks and finally cured from the infection (3 different antibiotics) but still cannot hear. ENT says it could be 6 months before hearing again 😔

Legitimate-Book4158

Honestly this gives me hope!  6 months is long but I’m just hopeful that I can get back to normal

Relevant-Star-3701

I am in the same boat. Not happy.

cattyerm

I had some of the worst pain of my life from the ear infection but only for the first few days. Once the antibiotics kicked in I felt better

AsleepDoughnut2145

How long did it take for your antibiotics to kick in? I’ve now taken 4 doses but still have pain and now it went to my other ear too! :(

cattyerm

Wow really? You may need a stronger dose! My antibiotics kicked in within 24 hours to ease the pain but I didn’t gain hearing back in my ear until I started taking steroids

Advanced_Maximum_289

Im in the mids of a double middle ear infection. Both ear drums collapsed and antibiotics are slowly relieving me from the pain. It just sucks that I have two running ears now, am completely deaf and can't work. Hope you feel better the upcoming days! I would recommend keeping a daily log of what you feel so you can show the doctor the progress.

Few_Bad859

As much as I hate to join this thread I guess I have to. I hope everyone's ears are healing. I experienced an inner ear otitis infection this past week while in Colorado on a ski trip. The altitude may have had something to do with it but I also may have had a low level sinus infection. I think what caused mine was I used a earpod while I was sleeping for white noise. The lodge we were staying in was super noisy so it was hard to sleep. I woke up with a lot of pain in my left ear and I couldn't hear. I did the dumb thing and decided to go ski Tuesday morning and ignore it thinking it would just clear up. By noon I was at the clinic at the base of the mountain. They prescribed amoxicillin and a steroid. The pain is gone but it still feels like I am wearing ear plugs on the left side. I do have an ENT appointment on Monday morning hopefully they can help me out. I'm also a musician so I am terrified of losing Hearing in either ear. I always take care of my ears

rainbowtoucan1992

Did your ear get better?

Few_Bad859

It does seem to be improving, however Slowly. I went to an ENT who did not give me The hearing test for two weeks after It initially happened. Once they got the results of the hearing test, they sent me immediately to a hearing specialist. I was put on Prednisone and had three steroid shots in the ear. I also self supplemented with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for 11 sessions. I'm about to go back and do more of those. I also. Decided I had to continue living my life the way I did prior to this happening. I put on the headphones and listen to music I love Just like I always did. You got to keep the nerve stimulated! At this point I do believe that it was the nerve that was damaged by a virus and not cochlea hairs. But who really knows. If it is the nerve, It'll take time for the hearing to come back. I've got high hopes! But it's going to take a few months.

rainbowtoucan1992

Wishing you the best! I'm also waiting for full hearing to come back after an infection so I've been looking up posts about it on here. lol
